Niren Bhatt needs no intro. A very successful writer with a range of box office hits from Stree 2, which did 400 cr. plus business, to another hit of the year Munjya. You can google Niren Bhatt and see his writing across genres, many of which you would have heard or seen. But, more than the box office figures what is interesting to know is how does Niren Bhatt think? Because writing is a thinking process- and the way you think is the way you will structure, the way you will choose the right elements for your story, the right scene perspective, and the way to move the audience; in his case SWAY THE AUDIENCE. Suchita digs Niren on multiple levels, and you can't miss the humour and get swayed.1) Writing across genres.2) Writing is a thinking process- HOW DO YOU THINK?3) Maslow's hierarchy and the intent of self- actualization!4) The detailed Writing process- which has to be fulfilling.5) The Syd Fields, The Robert Mckees- And the template of screen writing?6) From playwriting to ScriptWriting.7) Advice from Gulzar Saab.8) WRITER'S BLOCK- is fictional!10)First Draft - VOMIT DRAFT to 15- 16th Final Draft.11) SCRIPT LITERACY AND BOUNCING BOARDS- Who are you sharing your scripts with, to read- VERY IMP.12) The rejections, traumas, imposter syndromes.13) Importance of a DREAM PRODUCER-14) Market research/ Algorithms- Analysis is a double edged sword?15) What is it that your producers of Stree 2 and Munjya are DOING RIGHT?16) The analysis of the elements of genre.17) PLS DO NOT ASK FOR SO MANY NARRATIONS AND THEN REJECT C, TRAUMAS, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUESKnowing the INTENT and purpose of what ever work you are doing, will drive it in the right direction- in this case MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF SELF- ACTUALIZATION ! And, the moment you know this- you will set a clear direction for your life and your values, your purpose- which is all interlinked with the kind of work you want to do!! Great takeaway. Reflect and Enjoy!FOLLOW: @THE.ARTISTSPODCAST TO STAY TUNED! A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda, is the book by award- winning film critic Carrie Rickey. Rickey traces Varda's three remarkable careers—as still photographer, as filmmaker, and as installation artist. She explains how Varda was a pioneer in blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, using the latest digital technology and carving a path for women in the movie industry. She demonstrates how Varda was years ahead of her time in addressing sexism, abortion, labor exploitation, immigrant rights, and race relations with candor and incisiveness. She makes clear Varda's impact on contemporary figures like Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, Barry Jenkins, the Safdie brothers, and Martin Scorsese, who called her one of the Gods of cinema. And she delves into Varda's incredibly rich social life with figures such as Harrison Ford, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Morrison, Susan Sontag, and Andy Warhol, and her nearly forty-year marriage to the celebrated director Jacques Demy.Suchita talks to Carrie about this most important book on Agnes Varda who defined the French New Wave, inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, and was recognized with major awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, as well as an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards.Digs:1) Varda and her relationships with other Artists. She got to the essence very fast. Her ability to connect with people as a photographer and storyteller was immemse.2) Transforming from still image to moving pictures to 3 dimensional spaces- almost like a 3 Act of life!!3) The approach as a filmmaker that was so distinct from her director husband Demy. Her approach was to discover deeper aspects of things.4) Varda started making movies without knowing anything about movies- without having even have watched many films- and so she found her own language, her own grammar.5) Opening up to arts, creativity and filmmaking to create a new syntax.6) Truffaut's non acceptance of Varda as a director and his reviews in Cahiers du cinema.7) A very imporant difference between the French and the American studios financing movies-8) How photography taught her to capture the decisive moment!9) 1958 when her film got into the Cannes festival was she accepted into the community of french filmmakers and new wave filmmakers?10) The long marriage to another brilliant filmmaker Demy 11) Varda's relationship with Jim Morrison and his death- and how his funeral was for less than 8 minutes!12) Varda with Warhol, Susan Sontag, Truffaut. 13) Scorses's immense admiration for Varda.Enjoy this longish episode, and check out the book that is out now !!Join our Artists insta handle the.artistspodcast Email id: metaphysicallab@gmail.com/ You can follow us and leave us feedback on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @eplogmedia, For partnerships/queries send you can send us an email at bonjour@eplog.media DISCLAIMER: The views expressed on all the shows produced and distributed by Ep.Log Media are personal to the host and the guest of the shows respectively and with no intention to harm the sentiments of any individual/organization.The said content is not obscene or blasphemous or defamatory of any event and/or person deceased or alive or in contempt of court or breach of contract or breach of privilege, or in violation of any provisions of the statute, nor hurt the sentiments of any religious groups/ person/government/non-government authorities and/or breach or be against any declared public policy of any nation or state.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do you know that your brain works in different frequencies through out the day- from the time you get up to the time you fall asleep, and while you are sleeping!; these frequencies are defined as beta, alpha, theta, gamma, delta. It is being researched and proven that the slower your brain wave frequency, the better your mental and physical health. It is also being researched that slower brain wave frequency, gives you access to your subconscious mind- and it is being proven that our life, our decisions, our behaviour - in-fact, who we are, 95 percent of it, is controlled by our subconscious mind and 5 percent by our conscious mind. So, whats the big deal here? The big deal is that, we do-not know, that 95 percent of the time, we take decisions that are controlled by our subconscious programming. And, if we access our subconscious mind and re- programme it according to the WE that we want to become, or the life that we want to create, we will be able to manifest and fulfil the life, we exactly want to live. So, again how do we do this? By being able to control our brain waves and access our subconscious mind more frequently and reprogram it. Mediations are a way to do it. And, since i have been digging into this bit for quite sometime- i mystically came across this book- change your brain waves by Scholars and researchers Yukio and Susanne who explain this phenomenon through the practise of chantings. One of the most important thing in any film, and more so in a regional or an independent films is the camaraderie between the director and the DOP, where the two have to work together to not just design the film effectively, but also to deliver the film within a time span- to shoot the film in those number of days. The most effective camaraderie is a good friendship. Our guests are Darshan Trivedi, the director, and Tapan Vyas the DOP, on to their 5th film together, that is releasing on Jan 19th.Also, a great point that we should always get reminded of- it is a great joy to work with people who understand the purpose of cinema. It is greater joy and good fortune if your film gets to the theatres. Some key take aways is: Filmmaking especially for a director takes so much energy that it affects all area of their life, personal professional and- so be mindful when choosing to take this as a profession. Be very mindful in collaborating with people, and choose only the ones who have a true passion for cinema and are not there just for money or fame or other extracurricular activities that they think is glamour. And why should the audience go to a specific festival?Pushpinder Chowdhry is the founder of the longest running Asian film festival in the UK- The UKAFF, and Rita Meher is the founder of a prominent South Asian film festival in the U.S, Tasveer South Asian film festival. This snacky episode of THE ARTISTS podcast condenses our year 2023,our journey, insights, memorable moments and the most heard episodes."At the beginning of the year, we kicked off with our 115th episode, delving into the making of 'Joyland' with one of our favourite filmmakers. In total, we've clocked 27 episodes, averaging around 2 and a half episodes each month, even with a festive break and our other commitments. Not too shabby!"According to Spotify Wrapped data, our most downloadable episode was number 123, '9000 Feature Length Films.' Thank you to all the amazing guests who contributed to the diverse discussions on our podcast. Your engagement, messages, and social media tags have meant the world to us." Also our episode 121 on REACHING ACTORS was specially acknowledged by a lot of listeners- genuinely trying to make good cinema. We had a good listenership of Ep 130 the only episode on documentaries. We also spoke at length on audience in small towns in Ep 139.We didn't shy away from controversial topics either. In our snacky episodes, we ranted about ChatGPT, algorithms, and even took on the Oscars. Our special series on "artists and mental health" covered crucial topics like synchronicities, forgiveness therapy, ambition, vulnerabilities—all vital qualities in the life of an artist.""We dived into some significant events, such as the WGA strike in episode 126. Exploring the business side, we shared insights on building arts and culture startups in episode 136 and discussed the genius of Shakespeare in episode 140. Not to forget, our deep dives into Oppenheimer and Barbie in our snacky episode." How would you feel like living in a town where there is Shakespeare parked in every corner, staring at you!!! And how would it feel to be surrounded by actors who only play Shakespeare and his characters all the time!!Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is a Lecturer in Shakespeare Studies at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is the author of multiple books, all having a relation with Shakespeare. In this fun chat, we talk about not just the 400-year-plus legacy of Shakespeare, but also the strong influence of his work that keeps inspiring, filmmakers across the globe. And why? What makes Shakespeare this genius- his deep understanding of the human mind and the human condition, or his belief in something beyond what we see?To be or not to be? Is that the question for you? Or as Darren puts it Let it be.I do not know if there is any writer, for me who comes closer to Shakespeare- not just his multidimensional character but also how he thought about his acts and plot points and structuring - literally being the innovator of what we are following as a template. It is complex, yet it is simple- to be or not to be, or just let it be. What is the taste of audiences in small towns of India? How different it it? OR is it not after the arrival of OTT? How do they think? What do they enjoy? Why are filmmakers and content creators not including them in their creation? or is it OK to include them? Some of these pertinent questions and more with our guest Akkshay Rathie.Mr. Akkshay Rathie is a film exhibitor & distributor with operations spread across the central Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. While carrying forward a 70 years old legacy in the show business, Akkshay has been a pioneer in the process of consolidation of the film exhibition sector by orchestrating a first of its kind alliance between single screen cinemas of his chain with the Cinepolis, one of the largest exhibition chains in the world that operates from Mexico.A few tidbits that we got was: When Gadar 2 trailer came out- there was nothing expected out of it. In fact the word of mouth was complete opposite to the final results of the film - it broke all the previous records, myths and understanding of boxoffice in India for everyone including the makers.Movies like Shubh Mangal Svdhan a small town story, did well not in small towns bur urban india.Did you know that 45 percent of the screens in India are in the South- with north India having comparatively lesser film screens. An existential crisis refers to a period of deep questioning and reflection about the fundamental nature of one's existence, purpose, and meaning in life. It is often characterised by feelings of confusion, anxiety, and a sense of being lost or disconnected from one's values, beliefs, or goals. And Artists who I might call thinkers are most prone to fall into existential crisis. How can they deal with it? This episode is a part of Artists n mental health series. These episodes we cross-pollinate between our mental health podcast THE SOS SHOW and THE ARTISTS. The last episode we did was with actor Rajeev Khandelwal- chk that out if you haven't yet. Our guest for todays episode is peace activist Azim Khamisa who started the Forgiveness movement that has now reached millions of people. This movement is important for all of us, especially the vulnerable community of Artists because we live in a cut throat competitive world and there are many a times that other people rub badly on us or vice versa and we are unable to forgive. May this episode give us the wisdom to look deeper into our lives and on more profound values- forgiveness can be a great value that will ease our movement in this rickety path. In the year 1995, Azim Khamisa's 20 year old son had just got engaged. Next day, as he was doing his part time job of delivering pizza, a group of boys surrounded him and a 14 year old boy murdered him in cold blood. In 2023 Azim Khamisa runs a peace foundation with that 14 year old Juvenile boy who he also fought for to get him out of prison by forgiving him the murder of his only son. Azim Khamisa founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF.org), which started a subsequent forgiveness movement that has reached millions globally. He has received over 80 local, national and international awards. www.AzimKhamisa.comIn this podcast Episode, Suchita digs through this heart melting story of what can an act of forgiveness do to your and other lives. What about the daily acts of forgiveness that we have to do in personal and professional relationships, to strangers, to our own selves. What can an act of forgiveness do in a wider context like the current Russia - Ukraine war. Just one daily act can build your forgiveness muscle- meditation!! After we did the Ep 117 on Who are you making your films for, and then Ep 120 trends in indie monetisation and streaming, we thought we will try and solve a problem for filmmakers, if we can, by getting an opinion from Industry leaders, thought leaders, filmmakers on this one question that can help us all. Now making a film takes a lot of effort, time, resources, and if they do not reach the right audience the effort is all wasted.According to UNESCO, 9444 feature length films were made in 2019 and the rate continues. This includes films produced in all countries and languages, including Hollywood blockbusters, Bollywood films, art-house productions, and independent films. This number does not include short films, documentaries, or other forms of film and video content. So consider a very high side: if 4000 films get absorbed on various VODs- Netflix, Amazon, Mubi, Tubi, Hulu, Roku, local cables etc etc- what happens to 5000 odd films? 1) Do they just disappear? What happens to films that never reach the audience? or a platform.2) Do you think filmmakers should think of a plan before making feature films, so their films get discovered?3) Can we as makers streamline these 5000 odd films and how? How can the system think of streamlining these films so they do not get lost?We asked these question to our esteemed guests:(In Alphabetical order)A) ANJUL NIGAM- ACTOR/ PRODUCER- ER, GREY'S ANATOMY, NEVER HAVE I EVER......B) ISIDORE BETHAL- FILMMAKER /EDUCATOR-His work has screened at CANNES and SXSW, NETFLIX, MOMA C) KARAN TAURANI- INDUSTRY LEADER, EVP ELARA CAPITALD) MADHAVAN NARAYANAN- THOUGHT LEADER/ JOURNALIST- QUINT, NDTV, TIMES.E) PINAKI CHATTERJEE- CONTENT ACQUISITION & DISTRIBUTION, FILM FESTIVAL STRATEGIST- MISS LOVELY, NAMESAKE, A DEATH IN THE GUNJThere are many great answers, and if someone would want to jump on the bandwagon and collab and help us solve this, we can pull in more resources. I'm sure all of you heard the amazing speech by one of the best storytellers, Charlie Kaufmann, "Don't get trapped in their world of box office numbers. You don't work for them. You don't work for the world of box office numbers. You work for the world. Don't worry about how to pitch, don't pitch. Be nervous, be vulnerable. Make your story honest and tell it.
