Discussion of The Lady of the Lake, Ch. 5   We're barreling towards the end of The Witcher saga, and in this chapter we finally get some answers. After we break down revelations about elves, unicorns, the Wild Hunt, and time travel, Cam launches into one of his patented Big Boy Theories – namely, that this chapter is a microcosm and restaging of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, full of telling echoes to Oberon, Titania, Nick Bottom, and a whole bunch of other, pointed references and reversals that keep the runaway surrealism grounded in Sapkowski's beloved European folklore. Maggie spirits us away into a deep philosophical discussion about determinism, elven kings, and infinite universes. Cam argues passionately for and against free will and determinism. Rob McClure joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss kindness on and off Broadway, his beautiful full-circle moment during Beetlejuice, being kind to yourself and much more in one of our favorite chats ever... 2 Robs, 1 pod! (*chants*) Rob McClure is an actor and singer, who's become a magical fixture on the Broadway scene. Growing up in NJ, Rob was a bonafide theatre kid, winning the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award his senior year. Consequently his first professional gig was at the Playhouse shortly after graduation. Rob made his Broadway debut in 2002 as an understudy in I'm Not Rappaport. From 2006 to 2009, he went on to play several roles in Avenue Q, both on Broadway and on the show's national tour. He spent the next three years working on a musical that would put him centerstage: Chaplin. The title role earned him a Theatre World Award and his first Tony Award nomination.  Following Chaplin, Rob racked up a list of dazzling Broadway credits - not to mention various concerts and regional credits in between. You may have seen him in Honeymoon in Vegas or Noises Off. Or perhaps you caught his portrayal of Nick Bottom in Something Rotten on Broadway, which he continued for the first national tour alongside his wife Maggie Lakis. I'm such a sucker for a theatre love story. I most recently watched him day-ooo-ing his heart out in Beetlejuice on Broadway. Rob last lit up Broadway as the lead role in Mrs. Doubtfire… a marathon performance that earned him his second Tony nomination. Speaking of… it was just announced that the writer's strike will be affecting the Tony's live telecast this year. Please stay tuned after the interview for your kindness tip of the week where we'll chat a bit more about the writer's strike. Back to Rob! His screen credits include: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Good Fight, and Blue Bloods. One of the things I love most about him is the childlike sense of play and wonderment he seems to exude throughout all his projects. We cover so much ground from balancing your passions and your personal life to keep your mindset in a positive space. Of course Rob regales us with tons of fun Broadway stories along the way. A LIVE panel discussion with Rob McClure, Brad Oscar, and Analise Scarpaci of “Mrs. Doubtfire” talking about the roller coaster of being part of a Broadway show during a pandemic and the bond formed as they all dealt with the effects of COVID, including their show getting postponed. Rob recalls what it was like playing a role originally played by Robin Williams, and why he thinks the greatest adaptations of either material or performances are those that try to imitate how it made the audience feel. Analise shares her experience working with Rob and Brad, and how she helped her younger co-actors in the show. Coming from two shows back to back that dealt with serious matters in a comedic way, Rob shares the positive reception they got from people, and why comedy is such a good genre in that "you come to laugh and then through laughter we crack you open so that in the end we can deliver a message". Brad supports this by sharing how doing comedy is a means of catharsis. Rob explains the term "actually actually" that he cherishes particularly in comedy, and how acting is "reacting truthfully to imaginary circumstances". The three also talk about their favorite scenes, rehearsal as playtime, and the learnings they got from being in “Mrs. Doubtfire”. Rob McClure is an actor best known for his roles in musical theatre, particularly as Nick Bottom in "Something Rotten!" and Adam Maitland in "Beetlejuice". His performance in the title role of the musical "Chaplin" has earned him a nomination for the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and has won the Theatre World Award. His other theatre credits include "I'm not Rappaport", "Avenue Q", "Noises Off", "Honeymoon in Vegas", and the latest one, "Mrs. Doubtfire" where he was nominated for the 2022 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He won Best Actor at both The Queen's World and Williamsburg Independent film festivals for the movie, "Recursion". His TV credits include "Person of Interest", "Elementary" and "The Good Fight". Brad Oscar has been seen on numerous Broadway shows, including "Something Rotten!" and “The Producers” where he earned two Tony Award nominations for his performance. He has also performed in "The Big Fish", "Nice Work...", "The Addams Family", "Spamalot", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Aspects of Love", and “Mrs Doubtire” among others. His Off-Broadway and Regional credits include “Damn Yankees”, “Forbidden Broadway”, “Sweeney Todd”, and both the “Phantom of the Opera” and “Young Frankenstein” national tours. He has also appeared in movies and TV shows such as "Ghost Town", "The Producers", "Madam Secretary", "Smash", "The Good Wife"', and "Law & Order". Analise Scarpaci made her Broadway debut in 2012's “A Christmas Story, The Musical” where she played the role of Esther Jane. Her other stage credits include "Matilda the Musical", "Lolita, My Love", and "Mrs. Doubtfire" which was her first principal role as Lydia Hillard. Analise has also appeared in the short films, "Thespians" and "We're Gonna Come Back". She recently released her debut EP, "Pathetic Little Dreamer" which received positive reviews. Apart from performing, Analise has also done activist work and raised money with her walking group, Broadway for Bellies, and is currently giving private coaching and lessons to teens and kids. Shakespeare's original comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream follows young lovers and old lovers into the mystical, natural space of the forest, where the rules don't apply the way they do anywhere else. Continuing the increasing sophistication of his plays of late, Shakespeare comments on both the nature of love and the nature of the theatre. Join us as we discuss one of our favourite of the Bard's comedies! Notes: - The content of 1 Corinthians is partly mixed up by Nick Bottom after his sojourn in the woods; it's one of the most famous parts from the New Testament, and passages from it are routinely recited at weddings (much like Shakespeare's sonnets!) - Joseph Campell's monomyth and later amendments by scholars like David Adams Leeming discuss the mythological underpinnings of the journey all heroic figures take as their stories are told; though not a strictly heroic tale, Midsummer does borrow from these ideas to describe the journey of the lovers from civilization to chaos and back again. - For more discussion about forests and liminal spaces, check out this blog post - Read up on the Coffee Shop AU, a common trope in the world of fanfiction - A funny version of the Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe, starring The Beatles, from 1964 for Shakespeare's 400th birthday -- a must watch! - We had the opportunity to chat with John Bernardy of 25YL Site about the thematic links between Midsummer and our old fave, Twin Peaks -- check out our discussion about faeries and Lodges and forested liminal spaces (oh my!) - If you haven't seen the 1999 theatrical version of this play, we recommend it! - ...and if you don't know what Nanaimo Bars are, here's a recipe Ancient Bickerings Of all the pairings and couplings going on in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which couple is our favourite?

This week we review - Benny Hill Time (From March 1964)Despite re-running this radio series, all the BBC can find to say about this show is "The master of double entendre presents sketches including Fred Scuttle. With Peter Vernon and Jan Waters. From March 1964." Perhaps they were still smarting from his choice to work with Thames Television for 20 years. However, we do know that Alfred Hawthorne Hill was born on 21 January 1924 in Southampton. After the Second World War, Hill worked as a performer on radio and his first appearance on television was in 1950. In addition, he attempted a sitcom anthology, Benny Hill, which ran from 1962 to 1963, in which he played a different character in each episode and in 1964, he played Nick Bottom in an all-star TV film production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. He also had a radio programme lasting for three series called Benny Hill Time on BBC Radio's Light Programme, from 1964 to 1966. It was a topical show with episodes from March 1964 featured James Pond 0017 in "From Moscow with Love" and his version of "The Beatles". He played a number of characters in the series, such as Harry Hill and Fred Scuttle.Written by Benny HillProduced by John BrownBenny Hill Time is available here https://bbc.in/2MifIYPThe Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube.Subscribe for a new episode each Monday.Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

YOU GUYS! I’m still hyperventilating over the fact that I got to sit in a room with Will Chase and Rob McClure. These two gorgeous and hilarious men are currently starring in the absolutely fabulous "Something Rotten" currently running at the St. James Theater. I have to say, I’ve seen the show three times now and it NEVER gets old. With Rob McClure in the leading role of Nick Bottom--a struggling playwright in Renaissance-era London and Will Chase in the role of Shakespeare, who, in this telling is a pompous, lady killing, self-doubting mega-star, the show is every bit as hilarious as it was when I saw it in previews. Rob McClure, of course, is best known for originating the roles of Charlie Chaplin in "Chaplin" and Jack Singer in "Honeymoon in Vegas." Will Chase is best known for his work in "Rent," "Aida," "High Fidelity," and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" in addition to a thousand TV shows. It was so much fun to get to chat with these two. Enjoy!
