Today, my guest is my old friend, GERARD ALESSANDRINI, creator of the long-running off-Broadway hit revue Forbidden Broadway, which recently opened its 27th edition, FORBIDDEN BROADWAY — MERRILY WE STOLE A SONG now playing at Theater555 NYC.   On this episode, Gerard and I discuss not only this latest iteration of the show but also look back to its origins in 1980 and explore its remarkable forty-three-year history of hilariously skewering Broadway and insightfully spoofing its musicals, plays, and stars. As you might imagine, Gerard and I went off on several entertaining tangents not directly related to the subject of this episode, resulting in an additional ten minutes of outtakes that are available exclusively to patrons of Broadway Nation. Here is the information about how you too can become a patron. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! This podcast is made possible in part by the generous support of our Patron Club Members, including Geoffrey Block and Larry Spinelli For just $7.00 a month, you will receive exclusive access to never-before-heard, unedited versions of many of the discussions that I have with my guests — in fact, I often record nearly twice as much conversation as ends up in the edited versions. You will also have access to additional in-depth conversations with my frequent co-host, Albert Evans, that have not been featured on the podcast. All patrons receive special “on-air” shout-outs and acknowledgment of your vital support of this podcast.             Ken Fallin began his career creating witty pen and ink caricatures for the long-running satirical revue, “Forbidden Broadway”.  Intended as an homage to the legendary theatrical caricaturist, Al Hirschfeld, this concept was so successful that Ken continued to design artwork for the show's phenomenal thirty-year run.            Ken's instantly recognizable, intricately detailed pen and ink celebrity portraits have been published internationally by such diverse and distinguished publications as The Wall Street Journal, In Style Magazine, The New Yorker, The Hollywood Reporter, L.A. Times, Washington Post, Politico, and Barron's.            Ken has produced stylish and eye-catching art for major ad campaigns, posters and specially commissioned corporate gifts for HBO, Showtime, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Opera Company, American Express, CBS News, Walt Disney Productions, and Microsoft.            A TV commercial that animated Ken's drawings for CNBC's “Squawk Box” was nominated for an EMMY Award. Several original Ken Fallin posters are in the permanent poster collection of London's Victoria and Albert Museum. A number of his original pen and ink drawings now hang in the venerable Players Club.            As a regular contributor to Playbill.com and BroadwayWorld.com Ken has chronicled the New York Theatre scene for over ten years.            Private collectors of Ken's work include: Barbra Streisand, Bernadette Peters, Darren Criss, Matthew Broderick, Bradley Cooper, Sarah Paulson, Frank Langella, Sir Patrick Stewart, Warren Buffett, and Sir Cameron Mackintosh.https://www.kenfallinart.com/

A graduate in languages from Sydney University, Mariette was intended for a career in the diplomatic corps but fate took a hand when she auditioned and was cast in the musical Godspell. Her career in the theatre was off to a promising start and subsequent work in children's theatre and pantomime (including the role of the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) and with Ashton's Circus, extended her theatrical experience. Several other musical productions followed, including The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band and Paint Your Wagon, before Mariette landed the role of Val in the original Australian production of A Chorus Line. She played another iconic role in the musical theatre cannon when cast as the alternate ‘Evita Peron' in the original Australian production of Evita. Following Evita she went on to appear in Company, The Sentimental Bloke, Side By Side By Sondheim, Big River, and the national tour of Forbidden Broadway. Roles in Annie, The Seagull, Hamlet, Emerald City and Away are further credits with companies that include the Sydney Theatre Company, Hole in the Wall Theatre, (Perth), JC Williamson's, The Q Theatre (Penrith), the Gordon Frost Organisation and the Melbourne Theatre Company. Mariette has taught at tertiary level in some of Australia's leading acting schools including Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, The Actor's College of Theatre and Television, Sydney; the Actors' Centre, Sydney; The University of Western Sydney; The Sydney Institute of TAFE and in The National Institute of Dramatic Art's Actor's Program, Open Program and Corporate Program. She develops and expands her client's ability to create personal presence, engage on an emotional as well as an intellectual level, run meetings with authority, pitch persuasively and to deliver dynamic presentations. Her clients particularly value her understanding of how to use the voice and body to create maximum impact and her ability to specifically target what each person needs, to take their speaking performance to the next level. When was the last time you tried something new? Was it hard? Was it scary? Was it fun? Trying new things can take us outside of our comfort zones and into places of uncertainty, which can be a bit scary ... for kids AND grown-ups. Trying new things requires a certain level of confidence that most people are not born with — we have to work at it! In this episode of Little Kids, Big Hearts, Todd talks with River, Taylor, and Leo about trying new things. They go on an imaginary journey to the Land of Qook-a-Lackas where they meet Crayton the Dragon, who's learning how to fly! Please find more info and educational extension activities online at playsparkler.org/podcast. These extension activities will help you to support children (Pre-K to Grade 3) as they share their feelings about what it is like when they try new things and build persistence and resilience. Two special guests join us in this episode, and we are so grateful to them:Christine Pedi plays the role of Crayton the Dragon. She is a television and theater comedic actress, Drama Desk nominee for FORBIDDEN BROADWAY, Sirius XM radio personality "Lady of a Thousand Voices" and Award-Winning Cabaret Performer. A LIVE panel discussion with Rob McClure, Brad Oscar, and Analise Scarpaci of “Mrs. Doubtfire” talking about the roller coaster of being part of a Broadway show during a pandemic and the bond formed as they all dealt with the effects of COVID, including their show getting postponed. Rob recalls what it was like playing a role originally played by Robin Williams, and why he thinks the greatest adaptations of either material or performances are those that try to imitate how it made the audience feel. Analise shares her experience working with Rob and Brad, and how she helped her younger co-actors in the show. Coming from two shows back to back that dealt with serious matters in a comedic way, Rob shares the positive reception they got from people, and why comedy is such a good genre in that "you come to laugh and then through laughter we crack you open so that in the end we can deliver a message". Brad supports this by sharing how doing comedy is a means of catharsis. Rob explains the term "actually actually" that he cherishes particularly in comedy, and how acting is "reacting truthfully to imaginary circumstances". The three also talk about their favorite scenes, rehearsal as playtime, and the learnings they got from being in “Mrs. Doubtfire”. Rob McClure is an actor best known for his roles in musical theatre, particularly as Nick Bottom in "Something Rotten!" and Adam Maitland in "Beetlejuice". His performance in the title role of the musical "Chaplin" has earned him a nomination for the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and has won the Theatre World Award. His other theatre credits include "I'm not Rappaport", "Avenue Q", "Noises Off", "Honeymoon in Vegas", and the latest one, "Mrs. Doubtfire" where he was nominated for the 2022 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He won Best Actor at both The Queen's World and Williamsburg Independent film festivals for the movie, "Recursion". His TV credits include "Person of Interest", "Elementary" and "The Good Fight". Brad Oscar has been seen on numerous Broadway shows, including "Something Rotten!" and “The Producers” where he earned two Tony Award nominations for his performance. He has also performed in "The Big Fish", "Nice Work...", "The Addams Family", "Spamalot", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Aspects of Love", and “Mrs Doubtire” among others. His Off-Broadway and Regional credits include “Damn Yankees”, “Forbidden Broadway”, “Sweeney Todd”, and both the “Phantom of the Opera” and “Young Frankenstein” national tours. He has also appeared in movies and TV shows such as "Ghost Town", "The Producers", "Madam Secretary", "Smash", "The Good Wife"', and "Law & Order". Analise Scarpaci made her Broadway debut in 2012's “A Christmas Story, The Musical” where she played the role of Esther Jane. Her other stage credits include "Matilda the Musical", "Lolita, My Love", and "Mrs. Doubtfire" which was her first principal role as Lydia Hillard. Analise has also appeared in the short films, "Thespians" and "We're Gonna Come Back". She recently released her debut EP, "Pathetic Little Dreamer" which received positive reviews. Apart from performing, Analise has also done activist work and raised money with her walking group, Broadway for Bellies, and is currently giving private coaching and lessons to teens and kids. “I just love the warmth of being in a cabaret. It's my favorite place to be next to a Broadway theatre. Maybe more so because you get food.” Multi-hyphenates don't always start as actors. Theatre multi-hyphenates find their way through multiple avenues and for Christine Pedi, The Lady of 1000 Voices, it started when she stumbled upon the radio station when she attended Fordham University studying communications.  After focusing on a radio career, she started in community theatre, eventually landing her turn at Forbidden Broadway. Then through a connection from Fordham, she was asked to interview at SiriusXM Radio. And now – Pedi is one of the pillars of our community connecting listeners of the radio to the insight of Broadway. Post pandemic, Pedi is also continuing her in person cabaret acts, with a massively funny new show at The Green Room 42, called The Pedi Party, which had a wonderfully successful first show on January. She will be appearing at TGR42 on February 20th and March 31st both at 9:30pm.  In this amazing episode, Pedi lets us in to great stories regarding Howard Stern, Joan Rivers, while dissecting the changes and fads of cabaret and sketch comedy, such as how it's moved from live performance to YouTube, and what forms a successful cabaret – or the “Drop Your Pants and Go” mentality. Pedi is also open about losing her eyesight over the years and shares what that means regarding performance and work opportunities. We also discuss the importance of taking care of yourself, a sense of belonging, and hustle.  “A lot of people your age don't think about taking care of themselves until they are my age and then you got a lot of catching up to do. But to be forced to really address things now will probably serve you better and probably save you aggravation on other fronts.”  Christine the “Lady of 1000 Voices" first discovered her talent for multiple personalities (Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters etc) through her long association with the legendary off Broadway revue FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. She received a Drama Desk nomination for her work in FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD (Liza, Rosie Perez, Judi Dench, Sharon Stone etc) as well as an LA Ovation & NAACP Award. She also brought her collection of Divas to off B'ways long running NEWSICAL the Musical and recently starred in and co-produced SPAMILTON: An American Parody written by Forbidden Broadway's creator Gerard Allessandrini. Broadway: Mama Morton (yes just one character...all night) in the 2nd longest running musical of all time CHICAGO, LITTLE ME with Martin Short & Faith Prince, directed by Rob Marshall, and opposite Liev Schreiber in Eric Bogosians TALK RADIO directed by Robert Falls. SIRIUS XM RADIO On Broadway host. On Saturday she and the "aMAHzing" Seth Rudetsky co-host the DUELING DIVAS. Her cabaret show GREAT DAMES has won the New York Bistro & Nitelife Awards and has played NYC, Los Angeles, London, South Africa & beyond. THERE'S NO BIZNESS LIKE SNOW BIZNESS her holiday show has been a seasonal staple in NYC since 2008. She's performed in that “cutie patootie” John McD's Cabaret Corner on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and sung in many major NYC venues & cruiseships including Birdland, Feinsteins/54 Below, The Iridium, The Metropolitan Room, The Algonquin, The Laurie Beechman, Avery Fisher Hall, Don't Tell Mamas...and the QE2...AND she's performed for President & Mrs Clinton (playing a singing HIllary!). Fans of THE SOPRANOS may recognize her as Mrs Bobby Baccala. Other TV: DR DEATH on NBC PEACOCK. She has many popular comic videos on Youtube including many SHIT LIZA SAYS videos including LIZA :At This Performance and LIZA: HELLO DOLLY AUDITIONS. Learn more about your ad choices. When Madeline Kahn signed on for a limited tour of Hello, Dolly! In 1992, she had never seen the show, and the closest she’d gotten to performing in it was a Forbidden Broadway-style spoof called “The ‘Dolly’ Sisters” in a nightclub revue at the start of her career. Alongside Betty Aberlin (later of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) and Fannie Flagg (author of Fried Green Tomatoes), Madeline mocked the original Broadway production, which was still running at the time. Margery Lowe has performed in New York and across the country in various national tours, as well as at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, The Muny, the Fox Atlanta, Theatre Off Park, Sanford Meisner Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of Maine, Kansas City Starlight, Stages St. Louis, Maine State Theatre, Stage West, and many others. Additional Florida credits include GableStage, Zoetic Stage at the Arsht Center, Caldwell Theatre Company, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Actors’ Playhouse, and Stage Door Theatre.  Sherie L. Seff has been a casting director for over 30 years. New York credits include the Broadway and National Companies of ANNIE, CAMELOT starring Robert Goulet, ANNIE WARBUCKS, TAPESTRY, and most recently, Martin Charnin's SOMETHING FUNNY'S GOING ON AT 54 BELOW. Tony Nominated Lee Roy Reams (director) made his Broadway debut in Sweet Charity in 1966. Reams was nominated for both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in the original production of 42nd Street in 1980. ****This interview was recorded prior to the Broadway Shutdown due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The show is currently on hiatus until the quarantine is lifted**** On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, I am chatting with the cast & creative team of the fun hit Off-Broadway show A Musical About Star Wars: Tom D'Angora (Concept/Co-Book Writer), Taylor Crousore (Co-Book Writer, Cast, plays "Taylor") and Scott Richard Foster (Co-Book Writer, Cast, plays "Scott"). A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away… A Staten Island Blockbuster Video to be exact… Two stars wars fanatics, Scott and Taylor, write the most epic Star Wars musical ever! On their endless quest to perform it at Comic Con - a certain restraining order, that we won’t mention, stands in their way - they have opted to perform it on the glamorous Off-Broadway stages instead! However, dark forces are looming over their production, and her name is Emily. A Musical About Star Wars plays at St. Luke's Theatre (308 West 46th Street). Click here for tickets! More on Taylor: Taylor Crousore plays himself (Taylor) in the new Off-Broadway musical comedy A Musical About Star Wars, which he co-wrote the book for and recently did the original cast recording of. (Note, this is purely an informational bio and not in any way an advertisement for the cast album of A Musical About Star Wars, which is available for purchase on Broadway Records, Amazon or Apple iTunes). Other Off-Broadway credits include NEWSical The Musical, Forbidden Broadway, and the revival of When Pigs Fly. Regional credits include TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Pride and Prejudice (Wickham), North Shore Music Theatre, Beauty and the Beast (Gaston), Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre, Peter Pan (Captain Hook), and Indiana Festival Theatre, The Music Man (Harold Hill). Taylor was awarded National Best Comedy at the CMF film festival for the comedy short he wrote and starred in SheetWOW, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. He earned his BFA from Indiana University and is currently sitting at home with his dogs in self quarantine while you read this. More on Scott Richard Foster: Most recently seen in Clint Black's Looking For Christmas at Jabba's Palace at the Old Globe in San Diego, Scott is glad to be back working in the temperate climate of Coruscant. Broadway credits include Gettin' The Band Back Together, and Brooklyn The Musical. Off-Broadway Credits include NEWSical, Forbidden Broadway (2 editions), Power Ballads and Scott was set to star opposite TK-421 in True West but he never showed up on opening night. Scott made the Kessel Run in 13 parsecs. Not bad right?! TV credits include Shades of Blue, Blue Bloods, Turn, and the instructional film, So You've Been Hired By The Death Star. Thanks to Tom for getting this done, and for all my buds for being silly with me every night!
