We've never used a blimp to promote our show, but our guest certainly has used one to promote his. Only, his show featured Pink Floyd.  Today, we are joined by the legendary, Paul Rappaport, aka "Rap".  With over 30 years at Columbia Records, Paul has worked with everybody from Pink Floyd, to Bob Dylan, to Bruce Springsteen, to the Rolling Stones.  We cover a lot with Paul from his early career, to playing on stage with Pink Floyd, to shooting a high powered laser across LA, and breaking Alice in Chain's "Man in the Box".  Paul had tremendous stories, which many can be found in his great new book, Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and the Art of Rock Promotion.     We also learn about a very strange music festival Mike attended, Mike brags about his sperm, and Scott's son has some interesting theories on turtles.  Another great week.  Have a listen!

Gliders Over Hollywood tells the exhilarating true story of a blue-collar kid nicknamed ‘Rap' who grew up in thrall to rock'n'roll, then found himself right in the middle of many of his heroes' lives as he became the most renowned rock promotion man in the USA. Paul Rappaport enjoyed a storied thirty-three-year career at Columbia Records, where he was instrumental in the careers of everyone from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd to The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello to Billy Joel, Judas Priest to Alice In Chains, and many, many more. The music business from the late 60s through the 90s was an exciting time that mirrored the music and the musicians making it. It was also a time of new and creative ideas on how to market this groundbreaking cultural phenomenon. Eccentric characters were everywhere, and often the managers, promoters, disc jockeys, and record company staff were just as big a show as the performers themselves. ‘I wrote this book to capture the magical times,' says Paul, ‘so that people wouldn't forget but also to show the many behind-the-scenes folks whose lives were so colorful they brought a warmth and laughter to the world. If you want to know what it felt like to be there, to experience the whole scene first hand, to get the inside track on how it really all went down, these stories are for you. I welcome you to follow me down the rabbit hole to a magical place that will bring you laughter and reveal the inner workings of the music biz that you may have often wondered about.' From creating the Pink Floyd airship to sword-fighting with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and receiving a guitar lesson from Keith Richards, Gliders Over Hollywood is packed full of extraordinary adventures with some of the biggest names in rock.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Paul Rappaport is an accomplished guitarist who first heard guitar when he was a kid in California, watching a live local TV show featuring country guitar players…a show that was broadcast from a huge L.A. car lot. He learned to play, fell in love with the instrument and by high school was playing in bands. While attending college at UCLA, Paul got a job offer. A very appealing offer from Columbia Records. The position sounded good, but what really sweetened the deal was when he learned he could have all the records he wanted…for free. During his 33 years at Columbia, Paul Rappaport proved to be gifted at promotion and marketing and at forming close relationships with artist and bands, who knew him as Rapp. He gave Elvis Costello the red Rickenbacker used on Armed Forces. Pink Floyd asked Rapp to join them onstage at the London Arena. And he created some of the most memorable and visually stunning event promotions in rock history. All of this is told in Rapp's fascinating new book – Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and The Art Of Rock Promotion. You can order Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay and The Art of Rock Promotion from Barnes & Noble here. You can also order the book from Amazon here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. This episode emphasizes the critical importance of engaging with the Word of God as a foundational aspect of the Christian life. Pastor Dan explores Deuteronomy 6, highlighting the command to love the Lord with all one's heart, soul, and might while integrating Scripture into daily life. He encourages listeners to not merely read the Bible but to meditate on it, allowing its teachings to shape their worldview and decisions. By reflecting on historical figures like Martin Luther and Jan Hus, he illustrates the transformative power of the Scriptures and the sacrifices made for the accessibility of God's Word. As the new year begins, this sermon serves as a poignant reminder to prioritize Bible reading and deepen one's relationship with God through His Word.Andrew Rappaport, the host of the Rappaport podcast, kicks off the New Year by sharing a sermon he delivered at his home church, Oxford Valley Chapel. The sermon centers on the importance of studying the Word of God, especially as listeners embark on a new year filled with opportunities for spiritual growth. Rappaport emphasizes the need for Christians to engage with Scripture meaningfully, suggesting that the Bible is not just a book to be read but a vital resource for understanding one's faith and living it out daily. He draws from the teachings found in Deuteronomy 6, which outlines the commandments given to Israel, stressing that these instructions are not merely historical but hold relevance for believers today. Rappaport delves into the significance of the Shema, a foundational declaration in Jewish faith that underscores the oneness of God and the call to love Him with all one's heart, soul, and might. He reflects on the tendency of modern believers to take the Bible for granted, contrasting this with the historical sacrifices made by individuals who valued Scripture so highly they were willing to die for it. The sermon serves as a poignant reminder that true engagement with the Bible requires more than cursory readings; it demands a heart committed to understanding and applying God's Word in every aspect of life. Rappaport encourages listeners to not just read the Bible, but to meditate on it, allowing its truths to permeate their lives and guide their actions as they navigate the challenges and joys of the new year.Takeaways: Reading the Bible daily is essential for spiritual growth and deeper understanding of God. We must view life through the lens of Scripture to navigate challenges effectively. Moses emphasized the importance of teaching God's commandments to future generations. Engagement with the Bible should be about meditative reflection, not just casual reading. The historical significance of the Bible shows its transformative power in believers' lives. Our love for God grows as we understand His Word and what He has done for us.
