Damon is out this week, but the show rolls on as Damo, Aaron, and CS1 Burns sit down for a wide-ranging conversation covering everything from Navy policy changes and leadership lessons to deployment experiences, career growth, and why Seafood Newburg somehow became part of the discussion. We discuss LTB reviews, Master Chief pay, recruiting concerns surrounding Genesis, the Murph, the new UFC event fitness requirements, PRT alternate cardio, bad day chits, the CNO's recent email on grooming standards, the absence of women selected for Admiral, the relief of an entire triad in Japan, the Warrior Toughness rollout, and changes to evaluations at terminal paygrades. CS1 Burns shares stories about growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, dealing with the loss of a close friend in high school, his first deployment in Japan, how his views changed as he advanced in rank, and some of the most important leadership lessons he's learned throughout his career. The conversation wraps up with a discussion on radical candor, relationships between Chiefs and First Classes, why leaders should defer to expertise, why different doesn't mean wrong, why failure is sometimes necessary for growth, and this week's Do Better segment featuring a Sailor bypassing the process, a gas station "federal crime" investigation, and a few leadership lessons along the way. Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
We've been taught that pain always means something is broken, but it's often just a "stuck" danger signal in the brain. To show us how to turn that signal off, Jill Stoddard talks with Alan Gordon, the founder of the Pain Psychology Center and author of The Way Out. Drawing on his own recovery from chronic pain, Alan explains how fear and conditioning keep us hurting even after we've healed.Through fascinating stories like the "construction worker" case and MRI surprise, they dive into the science of neuroplastic pain and the tools you can use to retrain your nervous system, build stress tolerance, and finally feel safe in your own body again.Listen and Learn:Alan's personal frustration with navigating a broken medical system and how that led to the discovery of a groundbreaking mind-body approach that offers lasting relief for chronic painHow your brain can misinterpret emotional stress or past memories as physical danger to create real, persistent pain even after an injury has fully healed The specific clues that can reveal whether your chronic physical pain is actually coming from your brain, and how to break the cycle of fear that keeps symptoms alive The reason why traditional recovery methods can fail when we ignore our internal state, and how "backward engineering" your physical tension can signal to your brain that the danger has passed Why the clinical evolution of Pain Reprocessing Therapy shifted from exploring unconscious emotions to targeting the brain's internal danger signals, and how modern neuroscience identifies the hidden driver keeping your physical symptoms alive Why somatic tracking outperforms traditional mindfulness Resources:The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780593086858 Pain Psychology Center Website: https://painpsychologycenter.com/Follow the Pain Psychology Center on Social Media: https://instagram.com/thepainpsychologycenterhttps://www.facebook.com/painpsychologycenterTell Me About Your Pain - Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tell-me-about-your-pain/id1503847664 The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pain-reprocessing-therapy-podcast/id1785564399 TEDxAdelaide - Lorimer Moseley - Why Things Hurt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwd-wLdIHjsAbout Alan GordonAlan Gordon is the creator of Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and founder of the Pain Psychology Center. A mystery search warrant targeting the City of Pittsburgh has sparked big questions and almost zero answers. What could the district attorney's investigation actually be about? Host Megan Harris, executive producer Mallory Falk, and contributor Colin Williams break down the most likely scenarios, what's rumored, and why this kind of move is so unusual. ICE is officially at Pittsburgh International Airport, even though staffing here wasn't a problem — so why are they really here? Pittsburgh City Council is following the county's lead in proposing a bill to limit cooperation with ICE. The NFL Draft is bringing nice things but also transit detour chaos. Plus, the Midwife Center hit a big milestone, an attorney is accused of embezzling $1.4 million from the Duquesne Incline, there may be hope for the Pens and Pirates, and No Kings protests are returning on Saturday. Send a textSupport the showTuSaludMental.net

The state budget is due on Monday, and lawmakers are considering a few proposals to boost transportation funding — including taxing Uber and Lyft rides — but it seems likely PRT won't get what it needs to avoid service cuts. Laura Chu Wiens, the executive director of Pittsburghers for Public Transit, is here to explain what's on the table, what's at stake, and what she thinks could be done to build a more robust, financially stable transit system. Heart Forward has become particularly interested in the potential role that occupational therapists -- if empowered to practice their profession to its full potential -- could play in mental health support settings in the U.S. Unfortunately, the way that OT services are primarily funded (through short-term, medically oriented reimbursement systems) constrain their ability to come alongside people in their recovery journey over the long term. This topic was already approached in a Season Four podcast with Dr. Deborah Pitts from USC's Chan School. In this conversation, we learn about the ways in which the PRT engages with the system users. Three stark differences emerge: Time. There are no deadlines. They are afforded the time necessary to get to know the user and tease out the life plans/goals (also referred to as a personal rehabilitation project) that are meaningful to the user.Friendship. The relationship is described more like a friendship than what might be more typical in an American context. This equates with the ethos of coming alongside people in horizontal relationships that eschew the power dynamics associated with “professional” more verticalized relationships.Team. The PRT is part of a broader team – an équipe of other “operators” (their word for staff) – in the Community Mental Health Center. The other team members can help to weigh in on how to support the system user; the PRT is not left to his or her own devices. And, or course, all of this is grounded in the belief that a mental health system must support a person in all three pillars of one's life: casa, lavoro e socializazzione, or housing, work/purpose and community. The PRT must pay attention to each of these pillars to provide support for recovery. As we have researched this further, it appears that this role if fairly unique to Italy and was created to augment the psycho-social support that is an underpinning to the Italian model. As described in one of the articles linked below, “Psychiatric rehabilitation technicians are trained to perform multidisciplinary rehabilitation and education interventions for people and their carers.” Here are two articles about the role of the Psychiatric Research Technician. Pittsburgh's got a lot to lose! If more state funding doesn't come through, PRT announced they'll have to make huge service cuts, like fully shutting down 41 bus routes and ending service after 11 p.m. Plus, the Trump administration's threatening to close Pittsburgh's HUD field office. Executive producer Mallory Falk and producer Sophia Lo discuss the latest. Plus, they explain why there might not be any competitive city council races on the primary ballot, how a special election will determine who controls the PA House, and why Kennywood and Dollywood are (kind of) having a crossover moment. As interest rates rise, so has interest in pension risktransfer (PRT)—and litigation. Nevin & Fred take a look at what's underlying (and undermining) that focus, aswell as a new suit alleging aggressive participant marketing.Pension risk transfer is an aptly named process undertakenby an organization that wants to transfer its pension obligations to another entity, typically an insurance company. The process itself is a fiduciary decision requiring carefulconsideration of the entity to which those obligations are transferred—and therein lies the basis of a recent spate of litigation regarding those choices (and during a period of time in which PRT volumes have been setting records). For those not familiar with the underpinnings of the pensionrisk transfer (PRT—because we need another acronym), IB 95-1, issued by the Department of Labor in 1995 (in the wake of the Executive Life collapse), outlines the fiduciary standards to be used in selecting an annuity provider for a pension risk transfer. That includes considerations of the provider's investment portfolio, size relative to the annuity contract, level of capital and surplus, liability exposure andavailability of state government guaranty associations. In 2024, and in accordance with the provisions of the SECURE2.0 Act of 2022, the Labor Department basically concluded that while it was open to, and still considering, potential updates to Interpretive Bulletin 95-1, it felt that that document “continues to identify broad factors that are relevant to a fiduciary's prudent and loyal evaluation of an annuity provider's claims-paying ability and creditworthiness.” Additionally, EBSA found it “desirable for guidance in this area to remain principles based.” In this episode, Nevin (Adams) and Fred (Reish) talk about the trends and issues here. They also look at a new lawsuit that brings up an old issue—a recordkeeper's access toparticipants and alleged promotion of their offerings. Damo and Tisha are joined by Naval Flight Officer LCDR Frank “Siri” Bonner for an insightful and inspiring episode. Fresh off completing his PRT, Damo kicks things off by sharing how it went down. How did LCDR Bonner earn the call sign “Siri”? Why did he choose the path from enlisted Sailor to officer? Frank dives into his journey, from growing up in South Central L.A. and dispelling common misconceptions about the neighborhood in the 90s to breaking barriers as he transitioned into the Navy. LCDR Bonner also reflects on his time as a recruiter in one of California's wealthiest areas, sharing how he overcame challenges and thrived in the role. Throwing it back, Frank recalls the days of Blackberrys, his time as a DJ at Howard University during hip hop's blog era, and his impressive rise from Junior Enlisted to Chief, Chief to Officer, and Officer to Howard before returning to the Wardroom. He opens up about adversity in flight school, the unique dynamics LDOs navigate early on, and how the internet has reshaped the sense of community within the military. Other highlights include Frank's favorite Navy moment, advice for maintaining a strong relationship during deployment, and a lively debate on whether Chiefs should be technical experts. Damo also shares his thoughts on the “lost generation” in today's Navy and asks if recruiters are equipped with the right tools to inspire in 2024.
