This week Nicola and Di chat with champion netballer Cath Cox AM and author and comedian Carolyn Swindell, co-hosts of the No Dribble podcast. Cath is one of Australia’s most successful netballers, having represented Australia in 108 appearances from 1997 - 2013 and winning multiple gold medals and world championships. Meanwhile Carolyn had a career that spanned 2 decades in corporate, politics and professional sport, before she turned to stand-up comedy at the age of 49. Together with Liz Ellis, they are hosts of the hilarious No Dribble podcast, which is like listening into a conversation on the sidelines of a netball game - where they talk about all things life, friendship, family, wine and netball. In this conversation we hear all about Cath and Carolyn’s friendship, and how Carolyn made a plan to get to know Cath and LIz because she figured they’d all be friends if they met in real life - and she wasn’t wrong! Cath talks about her long career playing netball, and why she started playing in the first place - which was really all about the friendships, fun and socialising. We chat about her transition from netball into media and commentary and what that’s been like for her. We also hear about Carolyn’s fascinating career story and how at the age of 49, she decided to give stand-up comedy a go. She shares some funny stories about throwing herself in the deep end and the mistakes she made along the way. This conversation really is a funny chat between girlfriends. Everyone shares their funniest plane stories, some memorable moments from the podcast and we also talk about body image and aging - the good news is, it keeps getting better! We had so much fun on the couch this week with Cath and Carolyn and we hope you laugh along as much as we did. This episode is proudly sponsored by Eir Women. 598. Part 2 of our conversation with Liz Ellis about The Great Power of Small Nations. Ellis (Peoria) tells the stories of the many smaller Native American nations that shaped the development of the Gulf South. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories, Ellis's narrative chronicles how diverse Indigenous peoples—including Biloxis, Choctaws, Chitimachas, Chickasaws, Houmas, Mobilians, and Tunicas—influenced and often challenged the growth of colonial Louisiana. The book centers on questions of Native nation-building and international diplomacy, and it argues that Native American migration and practices of offering refuge to migrants in crisis enabled Native nations to survive the violence of colonization. Mahalia Jackson, one of America's greatest gospel singers, was born in New Orleans on October 26, 1911 to Charity Clark, a laundress and maid, and Johnny Jackson, a Baptist preacher, barber and longshoreman. She attended McDonogh School No. 24 until the eighth grade. Influenced by the music of the Sanctified Church she began singing at the young age of four in the children's choir of Plymouth Rock Baptist Church. In 1927, Mahalia migrated to Chicago and while working as a maid, laundress and date packer studied beauty culture at Madam C. J. Walker's and Scott Institute of Beauty Culture. She opened a beauty shop after this training. When the director of the choir at Greater Salem Baptist Church in Chicago heard her sing she became the choir's first soloist. Her beautiful voice made her popular. During the 1930s, she toured the "storefront church circuit" singing to congregations. Jackson bridged the gap between the sacred and the secular in her performances, often using scriptures to justify her use of hand clapping and stomping while singing. The next two decades found Mahalia recording songs and touring the United States and Europe. She became closely associated with the civil rights movement during the 1960s often singing at benefits for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the boycotters and student sit-ins. Jackson died on January 27, 1972 and is buried in Providence Memorial Park in Metairie. Women's sport is having a moment. And for all the right reasons. It hasn't always been the case though, and it's been a lot of struggle and hard work to get to this moment. Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Ellis talks with co-hosts Davina Two Bears and Farina King about her journey, which led her to writing her first book The Great Power of Small Nations: Indigenous Diplomacy in the Gulf South. She highlights aspects of the book and her research that trace the formation of Native Nations in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Liz is Peewaalia and is an enrolled citizen of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. She is an associate professor of history at Princeton University, who specializes in early American and Native American history. While her research focuses on the seventeenth and eighteenth-century south, Liz also writes about contemporary Indigenous issues and political movements. She is committed to organizing and fighting for Indigenous self-determination. In this episode, we speak with retired Australian netball champion and TV presenter Liz Ellis, who was recently appointed chair of Netball Australia, following a series of crises. Netball was riven with issues last year, including a team departing the national league, a pay dispute with players, and the loss of critical national funding. Hosting the conversation - about the many problems facing an otherwise popular sport that's played by millions of women and girls (and, increasingly, men and boys) around the country - is The Age sports reporter Carla Jaeger.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the show today… I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! has come to an end with Liz Ellis being crowned Queen of the Jungle. And there's a very welcome reason why Australia fell in love with her. Plus Kyle Sandilands and Tegan Kynaston's opulent wedding took place over the weekend and whether you like it or not the pictures, celebrity guest list, and outrageous amounts of money spent on flowers dominated the headlines. So now we need to talk through the most eye-brow-raising moments. And Sofia Richie pulled off an unprecedented PR move when it came to documenting her wedding, resulting in her new It Girl status. Now the conversation has turned to Nicola Peltz Beckham (or more pointedly, comparing their two weddings) and it's shining an uncomfortable light on how unforgiving the world can be when your brand just doesn't land. This chat I am joined by the winner of ‘I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 2023, Liz Ellis.' 'Liz' is a retired Australian netball player, she was a member of the national team from 1992 until 2007 and captained for the last four - of those years. She is the most capped international player for Australian Netball and has been a fantastic commentator and broadcast of sport in Australia since. 'Liz' reluctantly entered the jungle after a pep talk from her teenage daughter and while she wasn't a favourite at the start of the competition her popularity grew more and more as people fell in love with her easy going nature. I will ask 'Liz Ellis' if 'Kerri Anne' has been in touch since her win and if 'Liz' thinks she 'KAK' should have stayed. We will find out if those food trials are as bad as they look and what toll they have on your body post trial. We will discuss how how 'Dr Chris Brown' celebrated the final episode and who 'Liz' thinks could replace him next year. Plus we will get plenty of exclusives from behind the scenes of 'I'm a Celebrity' which is now on ‘Network Ten' - which you can catch up on - on ‘Ten Play' if you have fallen behind.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joing us this time is television writer, Review Review listener, and "White Men Can't Jump," appreciator, the wonderful Liz Ellis! The proper paperwork was filed with head office to have an open discussion re: "Brazil" - (1985) Starring Jonathan Pryce, Ian Holm, Kim Greist, and Robert DeNiro. We three try to hit every parallel (KAFKA!) to Dir. Terry Gilliam's funky, brutalist, 1984 allegory, that is widely considered a sci-fi masterpiece. Will we agree? May depend which version you watch...Plot: A bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.Recorded 3/231hr 50minsExplicit language.Artwork - Ben McFaddenReview Review Intro/Outro Theme - Jamie Henwood"What Are We Watching" Theme - Matthew FosketProduced by - Ben McFadden & Paul RootConcept - Paul Root
