Coach Steven Gilbert is passionate about developing athletes and preparing them for future endeavors. He is committed to excellence and believes in building character through his program. He is both defensive and offensive minded, and emphasizes defense. In Gilbert's first year as a first chair Women's Basketball assistant coach at Neosho County Community College, Gilbert managed team and individual skill development. He also marketed players, helping to get 100% of the Sophomore players offers to four year universities. In addition to this, Gilbert helped manage the team's grades- leading the team to finish their Fall semester with the best GPA in team history at a 3.48 GPA. Gilbert helped to manage the team's website, social media, community service, and fundraiser events. Prior to coaching at Neosho County Community College, Coach Gilbert coached at Miyamura High School as a Head Girls Basketball Coach. Gilbert guided the Lady Patriots to their first ever playoff birth and upset the defending state champions in the first round. He beat their rival team for the first time in school history and lost in the quarter finals of the state tourney. Leading his team to success with a 3.5 team GPA and a new school record, Gilbert was again named NM All-Star Game head coach, and he coached in the New Mexico - Arizona All-Star Classic. In this year, Gilbert sent 6 players to college, and secured three additional future scholarships for his younger athletes. Before his work at Miyamura High School, Gilbert moved to New Mexico where he accepted a position as a Head Girls Coach of Laguna Acoma High School. In his time at this school, he guided his team to a 24-6 record while maintaining an 18 game winning streak that broke the school record. The program made it to the state semifinals before losing a nail biter to the #1 team in the state. The program finished the year with a team GPA of 3.3. Gilbert also sent three players to college that year. Coach GIlbert was named coach of the year for his district, honorable mention for coach of the year for state, and head coach for the all-star game. Coach Gilbert began his head coaching career at South Walton high school as the Head Boys Basketball Coach. Here, he developed a young team with beginners knowledge and skill to place second in district. Understanding the importance of being students before athletes, Coach Gilbert motivated his athletes to finish second in academics in the state. Before becoming a head coach, Gilbert was an assistant high school girls basketball at Chiles High School for two years where he helped the program reach state for the first time in over five years. He also helped to develop the skill of players, leading a player to continue her basketball career at Daytona Beach Community College. Coach Gilbert then moved to Panama City, Florida where he was the assistant Boys Basketball Coach at Mosley High school for one year. Here, he also assisted with skill development leading several students to college success. Gilbert earned his B.S. degree in biological science from Florida State University and also has a M.S. in secondary education. Coach Gilbert has been coaching for 10 years. Within these 10 years, he has coached college, high school, and AAU. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stewart-richards/message

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMaP_zPXzdg&feature=youtu.be Sam Renfrow is a 49 year old father of three from Ripley, Mississippi. He has been married to his wife, Pamela, for 25 years, and they have three sons. Tyler (21 years old) is a junior at Mississippi State, Braeden (18 years old) is a freshman at Northwest Community College, and Landon (16 years old) is a sophomore at DeSoto Central High School. Pamela is a Pediatric ICU nurse at St. Jude. She stayed home with their three boys for most of their lives, and then went back to nursing school, and is currently pursuing her Masters degree. The Renfrows live in Nesbit. Sam's favorite activities are Crossfit, running (working on the Run Long part), college football, but most importantly, spending time with family. Sam attained his degree in Industrial Engineering from Mississippi State, and works as an Area Sales Manager for ChemTreat. His job primarily involves working as a consultant to help his customers protect their industrial water systems. Sam's was in the Navy for 20 years. When he retired, his family moved to Ripley. He worked in various jobs, including driving a milk delivery truck. His mom was stay at home mom. Sam is an only child, and grew up spending most of my time outside playing in the woods beside his house. When he was young, he got involved in activities like Boy Scouts and band. He played some sports, but was not as involved as youth are today. When Sam was in 7th grade, he decided he wanted to play football. Because he was going through puberty, and his voice had changed, they decided he should play quarterback. Boy, was that a major disaster. He had watched football, and was a huge Steelers fan, but had not played much football. Sam had no clue what he was doing. As he got older, the pressure got more intense to be a “jock”. He gave up Boy Scouts and band, and tried his best to be a great athlete. God did not bless him with great coordination or natural athletic ability, but he was willing to work hard. He gave it his best shot, and became a starter his junior year in high school. Just before his senior year, Sam decided that football just wasn’t his passion. He focused more on school, but really lost his identity and fell into some bad behavior. Now that he wasn’t a “jock” wanna be any more, what would he do? Sam was bullied some in Junior high into high school. That destroyed his self-confidence, and made it tough to be himself. Prior to 7th grade, He was very confident, and lived life “his way”. From 7th grade all the way through high school, he tried to be what he thought other people wanted him to be. As a father, Sam tries to teach his sons to be true to themselves, even when it is not “popular”. He is blessed to be married to a woman that truly an awesome mother. Pamela has a strong personality (in a good way), and has taught their boys to take up for themselves. Sam never knew how to handle the bullying, so he really never stood up for myself. When Sam got to college, he felt like he had a clean slate. He asked a good friend of his that was really popular at college how he got to know so many people. He told Sam to smile and say hello to everybody he passed walking around campus. He did, and it worked. He was finally able to be the person that he really was. At Northeast Mississippi Community College, he became a college mascot. Being in the mascot suit was one of the best things that ever happened to him. He could get away with anything, so he did. It helped him become much more confident and learn to be himself. He had a great college experience, and it transformed his life. As Sam has shared before, he thinks the biggest question we face in our fitness journey is our “why”. “Why” do we get up at 4:15 in the morning to go get physically beat up for an hour. He thinks the question of “why” is much deeper than our initial answer. Sam's parents both passed away within a two year span ...
Ken Steele sums up trends in on-campus housing, as colleges and universities build more and more residences, to appeal to international students, teenagers and their parents. Western University has 5,346 residence rooms, and most built in the past decade feature a semi-private floorplan with private bedroom and study space, shared washrooms, kitchen and living area. Colleges have increasingly been following suit, such as Fanshawe College, whose Merlin House accommodates 428 students in a similar fashion. Amenities arms races in Canada are nothing compared to those at American colleges (consider for example the $7 million leisure pool at Texas Tech University), but nonetheless the bar keeps rising for luxury campus housing. For example, Brescia University College opened a new $30-million residence in 2013 with private rooms, queen-sized beds, individual thermostats, and even room service. The University of Winnipeg opened a residence, McFeetors Hall, that combines 172 student dorms with 25 ground-floor townhomes, half reserved for community housing. In many provinces, capital debt is discouraged for residence construction, so increasingly institutions are turning to P3s (public-private partnerships) to design, build, and sometimes manage student residences (such as Thompson Rivers University, Ryerson University, and SAIT Polytechnic). If institutions don't build enough residence space, private developers will often swoop in to build apartment towers adjacent to campus. In some cases, student residences are an integral part of the academic mission of the institution, such as the Velocity Residence at the University of Waterloo, a "dormcubator" designed to incubate new student-run businesses (and already a success, considering graduates like Ted Livingston, founder of Kik Interactive, who donated $1 million to establish a seed money fund for future student ventures). In a previous episode, we argued that there has been a rise in part-time and commuter students on campus, even when they are "invisible" (see the episode at https://youtu.be/e5GGxa2Z7EY ). Some institutions are dedicating dorm space to commuter students, such as Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. UBC Okanagan has created "Collegia" to provide space to study, cook, socialize, or nap for commuter students on campus. Ryerson University has opened a new commuter hostel, with 9 rooms available to students for $35 per night, on a limited basis. Some residences are considerably less luxurious. In Terrace BC, Northwest Community College opened a 49-bed campus residence using the same ATCO trailers used in remote work camps - not only a cost-effective solution, but an experiential learning opportunity for trades students. Although the campus housing market seems to be bifurcating, students often demonstrate a resentment of inequality -- most recently, Ryerson University students gained international media attention over the #TissueIssue (fancier 2-ply tissue in the administration washrooms on campus). Space in residence may become even tighter yet, judging by the example of modular dorms in Hong Kong, based on the capsule hotels of Japan. Students pay HK$3,500 per month for a 6x4x3' slot, barely larger than a morgue drawer. Most places in Canada will never see such cramped quarters, but if they do appear, it will likely be in downtown Vancouver, where international students may arrive with less and less expectation of personal space. Finally, just #ICYMI, we share clips from a catchy new music video from the University of Victoria, "Discover Your Edge." (Oh, and a couple of bloopers follow the closing credits, for those of you who stick it out!)
