This week Craig and Rex begin a two-part series on the Miracle Braves of 1914.The early 20th Century was not kind to the Boston Braves (previously, the Beaneaters, the Doves and the Rustlers). Mired in the second division for years with frequent ownership changes, an outdated ballpark and few prospects, Boston entered the 1914 season with second year manager George Stallings, some promising new ballplayers and faint hopes to crack the National League's first division. However, after being swept in July 4th double header, the Braves were back in familiar territory - deep in last place, 15 games behind the mighty New York Giants. What happened next resulted in baseball's greatest come from behind story ever. The Braves caught fire and made a mockery of the National League West, wining by 10 games over the Giants, the league's three-time defending champions. Part One of this two-part series looks at the Braves remarkable season and sets the stage for the World Series against the American League powerhouse Philadelphia Athletics. You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. The Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary
Roger & Quentin pull off one last job in The Last Run! On our very first bootleg tape of the show, George C. Scott returns to the screen as a former mob getaway driver who returns to his old life to see if he still has it. All he has to do is complete one last job. Quentin and Roger discuss the legendary director who planned to make the film before Richard Fleischer was brought on and find out what makes this crime film work. Next up, the West goes wacko in Rustlers' Rhapsody! Rex O'Herlihan (played by Tom Berenger) is a fast-drawing, silver-spurred singing cowboy, who slowly becomes aware that every town he rides into is the same as the last. For this ode to kiddie matinees, Quentin shares vivid stories of the genre from theaters long shuttered and both hosts praise the gorgeous cinematography and affectionate parody of the film. Finally, The Jet Benny Show is the oddest film we've covered on the podcast so far. Shot on Super 8, you'll have to tune in to discover what this Jack Benny-themed spoof is all about… Learn more about this week's films, get Video Archives merch and more at videoarchivespodcast.com. We all love things we shouldn't love. Video games are no different. ”I can't believe you!” she screamed, having caught him in the act. She'd left work to surprise him. A lovely little act of kindness on what would have otherwise been a completely ordinary day. Just another feature-less weekday blended in with all the rest – the palatable home-made protein smoothie of life. A posh afternoon tea from the local fancy-for-the-area cafe that sits on the park. Sandwiches with pickle that isn't Branston's. Cheese that isn't 40% lighter cheddar. Scones with a hint of cinnamon. Homemade tray bakes the likes of which you usually only see on the TV that are the size of an eight-year-old's hand. How lovely. At least that was the intention. ”I didn't...” he stumbled. “I...” he added completely without point or reason. ”Get out,” she yelled, barely able to look at them together, the coffee table a mess of where they'd been. ”But...” he blurted out. “I was weak while picking up some bits from CO-OP. I'm sorry. ”I don't know why I did it. I'm sorry. I really am,” the chided man muttered, repentantly as he walked out the door. The woman sat down. She wasn't going to let this ruin her lunch. She pushed the empty Rustlers microwave burger wrappers into the bin and started eating her sandwiches. Welcome to VG247 Best Games Ever Podcast, Episode 10: Best game that is really bad. To get straight to the point and to quote myself from last week: “It's a 30-minute panel show where we decide the best game in a specific category.” More importantly, please don't eat a Rustlers. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. Tom – Operation Wolf A much-loved video game of the 90s, porting from arcades to pretty much every console and system that was around at the time, Operation Wolf on the Master System is the perfect game that's good but also bad. You see, it was rock hard, and had to be played with a light gun to experience it at its best. Most people, me included, used a control pad. Sad times. Alex – Deadly Premonition So bad it's good. Has any game ever perfectly summed up this saying more than Deadly Premonition. It somehow manages to combine a lot of fairly terrible things into a game that has a sizable, dedicated fan following. The fact that the sequel (seen above) so badly misses the mark is another testament to how all the planets must have aligned perfectly for this gem to come into the world. Sherif - EDF Earth Defense Force (EDF) is a long-running series where you essentially have to shoot waves of giant ants (and other giant things). That's it. And it's amazing. Give it a look and you might not get what's so great about it, but trust when we say that this is one of the most fun you can have with a video game. It's technically a mess (every version) and feels quite bizarre compared to the standards set and adhered to in most video games, but that is part of its charm. Let us know what game you'd pick and if you think all old games are bad, actually? If you like the podcast, please subscribe and leave a review saying how wonderful it is, and tell all your friends. Do a tweet about it, post on Facebook, hire one of those planes to fly a banner promoting it over a big sporting event. Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders is an old-time radio juvenile Western adventure program in the United States, one of the first juvenile radio programs. It was broadcast on CBS October 17, 1932 to December 11, 1936, and on Mutual from June 21, 1949 to June 17, 1955. Background. Bobby Benson was created by Herbert C. Rice, who had already originated dozens of local drama series as a director at a radio station in Buffalo, New York. In 1932, representatives of the Hecker H-O Company of Buffalo sought to develop a children's radio program for the company's cereal products. Rice associated the H O name with a cattle brand and soon developed a concept about an orphan named Bobby Benson and his guardian, Sunny Jim, an icon used to represent H O cereals. The program was called The H Bar O Rangers while it was sponsored by Hecker. Format. After his parents' deaths, 12-year-old Bobby Benson inherited the B Bar B Ranch in Big Bend, Texas. That development paved the way for adventures as, week after week, outlaws and other bad people tried to cause problems for the ranch and its people. Young Bobby was helped by Tex Mason, his foreman. Jim Cox, in his book, Radio Crime Fighters: More Than 300 Programs from the Golden Age, described the program as capturing the imagination of little tykes and older adolescents as Bobby and his ranch hands stumbled upon exploits well beyond an ordinary youngster's reach. Most of Benson's escapades involved the pursuit and capture of contingents of bandits and desperadoes of diverse sorts. Rustlers, smugglers, bank and stagecoach robbers dotted the scripts like cactus spread across the Western plains. Relief from the show's drama and suspense came in the form of songs sung around a campfire and humorous tall tales told by handyman Windy Wales. In a column in the May 15, 1938 issue of the trade publication Broadcasting, writer Pete Dixon noted that inclusion of comedy segments boosted the show's popularity: "Bobby Benson & the H-Bar-O Rangers was just another juvenile western until ... comedy characters were introduced in the script. Comedy situations were alternated with melodrama. Within a year the Bobby Benson show jumped from tenth place among juvenile favorites to first place. Comedy accounted for the climb". In 1949, a reviewer for the trade publication Billboard wrote, "Kids still go for good old-fashioned Western adventure, and this show is loaded with fast action and fancy gunplay, yet wholesome enough to please the most exacting parent" unquote. The program was set in the modern West, with devices like automobiles and airplanes in addition to horses. From 1932 to 1936, episodes were 15 minutes long and varied in frequency from two to five times a week. From 1949 to 1955, episodes were 30 minutes long, airing three to five times per week. In 1949, Rice, who had become production manager for Mutual, explained the reason for lengthening episodes: "Here we have taken a show that was a highly successful 15 minute strip back in 1932. It ran for five years commercially and sold a lot of cereal. We have modernized it into a half hour complete feature story. We recognize that "cliffhangers" for boys and girls are outdated. We know our juvenile audience has been conditioned to expect a well-constructed thirty minute drama".
