Episode 81. This week, let's peruse another prefecture and visit what's known as the "Roof of Japan", the mountainous, landlocked and high altitude Nagano Prefecture. This prefecture is most widely known as the host of the 1998 Winter Olympics but it is also famous for its photogenic snow monkeys that love to warm up in the onsen hot springs in winter. The many towering mountain chains of Nagano provide snow melt water to much of the region and because of this, Nagano has the second highest number of sake breweries of any prefecture.  John and Timothy sample a sake from a quintessential brand of Nagano: Masumi, and they explore their flagship, the Masumi Okuden Kantsukuri Junmai. He served as a chaplain for ten years at three different hospitals in NY and NJ. While at St. Peter's Medical Center in New Jersey he began to experience people with HIV/AIDS coming into the hospital in the 80s, which led him to establish a nonprofit organization, Chrysalis Ministry, to reach out to those who experienced this disease as a death sentence at that time. It was during this twelve-year period of time that Bill incorporated Reiki into his ministry. After that Bill worked with the visiting nurse supporting people at the end of life. Bill has studied with teachers such as Khandro Kunzang Dechen Choron, Gilbert Gallego, Hyakuten Inamoto, Frans Stiene and Kathleen Prasad. He still teaches at 88 from his home in New Rochelle, New York. Judy Buchanan is an entrepreneur, Certified Medical Reiki Master, public speaker, retired U.S. Army solider, wife and mother of two. Her passion is to empower women to safely release trauma, anxiety, grief and pain so they can feel better and thrive. Judy provides Reiki treatments, Reiki classes, supports holistic workshops and retreats as well as provides lectures to educate her community. Judy Buchanan has attained the level of Karuna Reiki Master through the International Center for Reiki Training (IRCT) and the Okuden level of Jikiden Reiki®. Certification in Medical Reiki through Raven Keyes Medical Reiki International. Certification in Sacred Childbirth with Reiki through Rev. Cori Nielsen. She has a Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW), and a Master's in Business Administration (MBA). Judy spent 20+ years in the U.S. Army as Medical Service Corps Officer. Her military journey came with many adventures, friendship, and accomplishment as well as many struggles and obstacles. Judy can relate to the stressors working parents, service members, and dual military couples experience while raising a family. Like many other service members, she has been on both sides of deployment: the soldier who deployed and the family member at home taking care of the children while their spouse is away. For many years, Judy experienced many significant health challenges and pain due to her response to high levels of stress. Her desire to heal was the catalyst to explore many complementary medicine techniques. She made great improvements from several different types of holistic therapies but Reiki was different. After having her first Reiki treatment, she knew immediately she needed to learn Reiki and share this amazing therapy with others. When we restore peace and harmony to our body, mind, spirit, or to a situation, we open the pathway so healing can occur. She has been a student of holistic therapies for more than a decade and believes education is a fundamental means of empowering others. Judy educates our community by providing lectures on Reiki and its benefits as well as encouraging others to explore many complementary therapies to heal. She supports the Frederick County Library System Adult Education Program, Maryland State Wellness at Work Program/ Frederick Chamber of Commerce 5 Pillar of Health Lecture Series, Frederick Community Hospital Employee Health and Wellness Program, Fort Detrick United States Army Medical Materiel Development Agency's Stress-Free Zone, and Frederick Community College Employee Wellness Fair. Mari Hall is a multifaceted woman; a Life Skills Coach, Trainer, and Motivational Speaker. Her focus is on providing individual and couples skills to return to a balanced state. She specializes in stress reduction, women’s’ issues and family mediation services. Her goals are to continue to inspire people to remember their birthright and live life fully. Mari has been a teacher/practitioner of Reiki for over 30 years. She has a private practice and also does distance work and phone consultations. She travels to teach all over the world.  She taught and lived in Europe for over 18 years. During that time she founded and still directs the International Association of Reiki. Through this association she has taught over 50,000 people Reiki and authored and had 9 books published on Reiki in many different languages.  In 2009 Mari met Tadao Yamaguchi in Bogotá, Columbia where they were speaking at a Reiki Conference with Arjava Petter. She took her first Shoden and Okuden courses in Bogotá with Tadao and Arjava. She became a Shihan Kaku or assistant teacher of Jikiden Reiki in May 2011 and has assisted in a large number of courses since 2009 with Arjava. The seminars replicate those taught in 1930s and are based on over 65 years of treatment experience. She became a Shihan in May 2013.  Mari is also a designer of very special one of kind prayer beads. Her designs incorporate precious and semi precious stones and prayer.
