Not all of our DISH Deluxe history podcasts will be about a single date in White Sox history — in fact, quite often they won't be. This episode is our first such podcast. The 1977 club was selected now, because at 22-6, it remains the best July club in White Sox history. And the South Side Hit Men spent the entire month in first place, stretching nearly into mid-August. Mark Liptak and Brett Ballantini discuss the overwhelming sense of fun associated with that club, and more: Not only the best July club in White Sox history, but the only one better than .500 from 1973 to 1982, and the best team overall between 1966 and 1982 Setting the scene — Bill Veeck and Roland Hemond's clever/desperate Rent-a-Player strategy The key trade made at the dawn of the season — and the bonus ace who was almost stuffed into the deal! Opening Day: snow Heating up/highlights as the White Sox made their ascendance Where it started to falter and fall off The legacy of the South Side Hit Men The unsung hero of that 90-win club Miraculous ... defensive? ... achievements! Before we get to the 1980 World Series, let's check in on the American League. For the fourth time in five seasons, the AL West Champion Kansas City Royals (97 - 65) face off against the AL East Champion New York Yankees (103 - 59) for the AL pennant. The Bronx Bombers came away victorious in the three previous matchups, but this year KC was looking to change the narrative. These teams come from cities that couldn't be more different, but a closer look at the make-up of their respective rosters shows similarities. Led by MVP-caliber stars: Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson and George Brett. Tremendous second-basemen: Willie Randolph and Frank "Smooth" White. Productive backstops: Rick Cerone and Darrell Porter. Solid veteran hitters: Bob Watson, Oscar Gamble and Hal McRae, Willie Aikens. And firemen at the back end: Rich "Goose" Gossage and Dan Quisenberry. Don't let the overall records and recent playoff history fool you; these are two very evenly matched teams. Game 1 in KC sees a matchup between two lefty aces, Larry Gura (18 - 10 2.95 ERA in 283 IP) vs. Ron "Gator/Lightning" Guidry (17 - 10 3.56 ERA in 219 IP) Game 2 in KC sees the veteran workhorse Dennis Leonard (20 - 11 3.79 ERA in 280 IP) take on veteran lefty swingman Rudy May (15 -5 2.46 ERA in 175 IP) Game 3 in NYC yet another lefty-lefty battle, NYY sends rubber-armed Tommy John (22 - 9 3.43 ERA in 265 IP) vs. Paul Splittorff (14 - 11 4.14 ERA in 204 IP) Can the Royals finally break through versus their cross-country rival, or will the Yankees continue their dominance into the new decade? Audio Clips from Youtube As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O. *On the original publish, an audio glitch with my microphone occurred around the 44 minute mark, and corrupted my audio from that point. I had to rerecord on a different microphone for the second half of the show. Apologies for the drop off in audio quality*

Beer for a dime? So conceivably, a person can get trashed at the ballpark for just one dollar? Many such cases occurred on June 4th, 1974 at Cleveland Stadium between the Indians and Texas Rangers, which caused a brouhaha between the fans and players as the game progressed (or regressed).   Jim Clark is the play-by-play man for the Akron RubberDucks and the author of the book Rally 'Round Cleveland, which chronicles the 1974 Cleveland Indians. Why the '74 team, who finished with a mediocre 77-85 record? Well, if it wasn't for the likes of Gaylord Perry, Oscar Gamble, George Hendrick, and others, and the excitement they brought, the Indians may have moved elsewhere.   If one thinks there is no possibility their team could relocate, Jim assures them they are wrong (see the 1995 Cleveland Browns).   Jim still has copies of his book available: https://www.amazon.com/Rally-Round-Cleveland-Franchise-Saving-Indians/dp/0578205300   Follow Tony on his various social media platforms: Twitter - @TonyMazur Instagram - @tmaze25   Be sure to subscribe to Tony's Patreon. $5 a month gets you bonus content, extra podcasts, and early access to guests. Now that he's finally back at the helm, the genius behind America's greatest Twitter feed, Super 70s Sports, joins a Very Special Episode of Puttin' Up Numbers to talk (what else?) all things 70s. Ricky Cobb might not be a household name like Joe Namath, Howard Cosell or Evel Knievel but if your birthday falls anywhere from around 1960 to the mid-1970s, Ricky has established himself as a legend. Thanks to his super popular and super funny Twitter account, Super 70's Sports is a must follow for anyone who appreciates great humor, Oscar Gamble's Afro and cigarette ads that appear to spotlight serial killers. Oh, and if you're easily offended by some off-color language, follow someone else. Ricky talks as if you're sitting with him at a bar and you're already a couple of pitchers in. Our GuestRicky Cobb is a college professor by day and a Tweeting machine by night (and mornings, afternoons or basically whenever he can). When you're the father of five daughters plus two stepdaughters it's important to find some quiet time for yourself. Ricky has turned that quiet time into a fledgling media empire that now has him positioned to do everything from stand-up comedy to big-time production deals. With more than 375,000 followers and counting, Super ‘70s Sports captures an era of sports – and plenty of other stuff – that guys like us just can't get enough of. 1:30 – “Introductions are in order.”Ricky tells us that unlike our childhood heroes, he's got the athletic talent of a neighborhood dad. Hey, just like us!2:15 – “Looking for an outlet.”Describing the origin story behind one of the most popular Twitter feeds this side of Elon Musk, Ricky says that his love for comedy merged perfectly with his love of sports and the era of sports he grew up cheering for. And he says he's actually amazed to be talking to us clowns, which is the nicest thing any guest has ever said to us. Hand me a tissue.4:09 -“The balancing act.”Ricky's Twitter magic takes a ton of blood, sweat and tears. “I created a beast and that beast must be fed to the tune of a couple of dozen posts a day.” That type of pace makes the balancing act with family and the day job a world-class chore.7:06 - “The guys who produced the Evel Knievel commercial took all sort of liberties with physics.” Yes. Yes they did. Although this toy never landed on its wheels, the promotional spot on our TVs every Saturday morning showed him pulling off the perfect jump each and every time. Pathetic to play with the emotions of a 9-year-old.10:44 – “Wow. Rob and Chad Lowe retweeted me.”Ricky's “Welcome to the NFL” moment came first when Dale Murphy – yes, that Dale Murphy – followed him and then the brothers Lowe retweeted him. That's big time indeed.21:11 – “I just purchased the 1976 Topps football card set.”Affording the set that includes the vaunted Walter Payton Rookie Card really proves you've got game. Ricky grew up studying baseball and football cards like he was studying for a final exam. And if you spend more than 10 minutes following Super ‘70s Sports you're highly likely to see some of those sports cards. And why so many of those football cards included station wagons parked in the background is anyone's guess.32:51 – “Kelly Leak is the greatest Little League slugger in the history of our national pastime.”Ricky settles it. Kelly Leak, the chain-smoking, motorcycle riding and baseball smashing center fielder of Chico Bail Bonds' Bears sits atop Mount Olympus among other 1970s era sports comedy superstardom. Leak's #3 edged the likes of Reggie Dunlap, Paul Crewe, Nick Nolte and the legendary Bingo Long. Our thanks to the inimitable Ricky Cobb. In the 1970's the Cleveland Indians failed in their annual quest to reach the postseason, the ALCS and World Series. However, they played their hearts out and Cleveland Municipal Stadium was the place to be to enjoy the Tribe in person. The team made history in 1975 by hiring the first African American manager, Frank Robinson. At various times the Tribe contended and the fans dreamed of October baseball. However, win or lose, the players went out there and gave it their best shot. Notable Indians from the decade include: Rick Austin, Vince Colbert, Stunning Steve Dunning, Rich Hand.
