It's truly time for Josh to focus on what really matters, things like trout releases amongst toddlers, the old baseball player Gaylord Perry, quick resolutions to fights with ma, Signal chat leaks, Righteous Gemstones emotions, Civil War sadness, White Lotus, Sandinistas, feeling historical topics, unfiltered kids, and sweating the small stuff. 1975 was a banner year for Rookies in Major League Baseball. Fred Lynn broke onto the scene in Boston and won Rookie of the Year and MVP… the first player ever to do that. And in the National League, John, “The Count” Montefusco took home the honors of National League Rookie of the Year. The Giants hurler narrowly beat out The Kid, Gary Carter, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a catcher. The only other player to get a vote for American League Rookie of the Year was Lynn's teammate, a future Hall of Famer himself, Jim Rice who had a fantastic freshman year. The 3rd Hall of Famer in that rookie class was a pitcher in Cleveland by the name of Dennis Eckersley. But he wasn't the only young stud on that staff… Enter The Amazing Emu… Jim Kern. A non-drafted pitcher out of Midland, Michigan, Kern didn't rise quickly through the minors and took a detour when he joined the marines in 1969. After a year of serving and 5 more in the reserves, Kern's baseball career started to take off and after a brief callus to the bigs in '74, he came up for good in '75. As a starter he had inconsistent success but with Frank Robinson as his manager, he converted to a receiver in 1976 and a star was born. One of the hardest throwers in the game, Kern took to his new role immediately, winning 10 games and saving 15 with an ERA of 2.37 over 117 innings. He was an American League All-Star the next three seasons culminating in 1979 when he won 13 games out of the pen and saved another 29 while amassing 143 innings with an ERA of 1.57. A season for the ages for the 6'5 flamethrower. Unfortunately injuries plagued Kern for much of the rest of his career. He bounced around the league and other than a resurgence in 1982 for a bad Reds team, he never was as dominant as he was during that 4-year stretch from 1976-79… On the Past Our Prime podcast, Kern tells us about his journey from being undrafted out of high school, to the marines to a 3-time All-Star reliever from 1977 to 1979. He tells us about his days in Cleveland that included playing for the first black manager in baseball history, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and being on the same pitching staff as another Hall of Famer, Dennis Eckersley. Kern speaks fondly of many teammates including Gaylord Perry, Pat Dobson, Sparky Lyle and Boog Powell who taught this “dumbass rookie” as much about being a pitcher as anyone he ever came across. And this baseball character tells us about the best prank he ever took part in, and how Buddy Bell got his revenge! It's a bunch of laughs with one of the funniest relief pitchers of the late 70's who could throw the ball about as hard as anyone for a brief, yet electric time in Cleveland and Texas. Bobby Mathews pitched in three major leagues from 1871 to 1887 and ended his career with 297 career wins. Why did he stop playing when he was so close to 300? This episode looks into Mathews' career as well as wins as a statistical category and 300 wins as a significant career milestone to kick off this series about players who came very close, but did not quite reach landmark career totals.Errata: Justin Verlander made one start for Houston before going on the injured list in 2020.Episodes Referenced:213 - Talking 1890 Players League Blues w/ Robert Ross Major Sources:Brian McKenna, "Bobby Mathews," Society for American Baseball Research website, www.sabr.org.Frank Vaccaro, "Origins of the Modern Pitching Win," 2013 Baseball Research Journal. The source for all player statistics is baseball-reference.com.Too many contemporary newspapers accounts to list here.Hooks & Runs - www.hooksandruns.comHooks & Runs on Twitter - https://twitter.com/thehooksandrunsRex von Pohl (Krazy Karl's Music Emporium) on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/people/Krazy-Karlz-Music-Emporium/100063801500293/ Hosts Emeritus:Andrew Eckhoff on Tik TokLink: https://www.tiktok.com/@hofffest Eric on FacebookLink: https://www.facebook.com/ichabodericEmail us: hooksandruns@protonmail.comMusic: "Warrior of Light" by ikolics (Premium Beat Lic.) Grease Discovery:August 23, 1982, Gaylord Perry of the Seattle Mariners is caught putting a foreign substance on the ball. Long suspected of throwing a “spitball,” Perry is ejected from a game for the first and only time in his career.Hall of Fame Debut:August 23, 1936, future Hall of Famer Bob Feller makes his first major league start and strikes out the first eight batters he faces. The Cleveland Indians' rookie finishes the game with 15 strikeouts and a complete-game victory.Historic Sale:August 23, 1980, Charlie Finley sells the Oakland A's to the Levi Strauss company for nearly $13 million. During Finley's reign in Oakland, the A's won three consecutive World Championships. Finley also influenced the adoption of the designated hitter, World Series night games, and multi-colored uniforms.3 7th Inning Stretches:1989 - Rick Dempsey homers off Dennis Martinez in the top of the 22nd inning to break up a scoreless tie and give the Dodgers a 1 - 0 win over the Expos. The game features one thumbing - the umps toss the Expos mascot Youppi! in the 11th for annoying Tommy Lasorda - and he then returns in the 13th wearing pajamas. He carries a pillow and sleeps on the home dugout roof, where the umps have restricted him. In the 16th, Larry Walker apparently scores the game-winner, but the Dodgers appeal - with two umps in the tunnel - and get the play revesed. Eddie Murray in the 18th moves the second base ump and slams a drive that Walker traps off the padding in RF. Fans stand for three "seventh-inning stretches" during the major-league record (in time, and for a 1 - 0 game) 6 hours, 14 minute game. Other club records are set and several major league records are noted: most innings (22) without a walk by the Expos tops the Pirates (who used one pitcher) against the Giants, July 17, 1914.

Jim and Gaylord Perry, Catfish Hunter, Mike Caldwell, Cal Koonce. These are names of some of the most notable major league pitchers who have called Eastern North Carolina home. There are many others, including one who attended Campbell before reaching the big leagues in the 1970s. Earl Stephenson was born in Benson, played baseball at Campbell under legendary coach Hargrove Davis, served his country and went on to a 13-year professional career. When his playing career ended, Earl made his way back home to Eastern North Carolina, where he has spent the last 25 years involved in coaching youth baseball and helping young people reach their dreams. Later this month, Earl will join the Perry brothers and Koonce when he is inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Earl talks with Stan Cole about his baseball journey and more.

Jim Perry made three appearances on the All-Star stage, won the Cy Young Award, lead the AL twice for wins, and in 2023 is 84th on the all-time wins list with 215 successful appearances. Yet you probably know him as the older brother of Gaylord Perry. Curiously, the two pitching brothers only met once. July 3, 1973 with Gaylord pitching for the Twins and Jim for the Tigers. Gaylord was charged with the 5-4 loss, and I'm pretty sure that Jim brought this up over Thanksgiving dinner for many years. Unfortunately, we don't have that game. Instead we're going back a few years to 1970, and the ALCS. Jim Perry is on the mound for the Minnesota Twins and is facing the Baltimore Orioles for Game 1. It's a rerun of the 1969 ALCS, where the Orioles swept the Twins. The pressure is on Perry to deliver. And I'm pretty sure we have Chuck Thompson with the microphone. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN197010030.shtml This game was played on October 3, 1970. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message
Gaylord Perry won the Cy Young in both the American and National Leagues, had five seasons with over 20 wins, was the third pitcher to rack up 3,000 strikeouts, joined the 300 win-club in 1982, and many more achievements. As the 2023 season ends, Perry is ranked 17th in the all time winners list. Yet Gaylord Perry is remembered for one pitch in his arsenal, the spitball. A pitch with a wicked level of drop while offering a huge amount of control to break inside or out in the hands of a skilled pitcher. And the skill was not getting caught pitching this banned ball. Did Gaylord throw a spitball, or did the opposition simply think he threw a spitball? And does that matter when you look at all of his numbers? For today's classic game, we're heading back to a time when Perry was in his prime. It's 1969 and the 20-14 San Francisco Giants are still in the Phillies backyard. With Perry on the mound they are looking to get back on level terms in the series. Taking us through the game are KSFO's Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons. This game was played on May 17, 1969. “The Babe”, George Herman Ruth, was the first sports superstar. He had the potential to be baseball's greatest left-handed pitcher. Instead, he moved to the outfield and became its greatest hitter. Until Ruth arrived in New York in 1918, the Yankees had never won a pennant. Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer at age 53 in New York on August 16th 1948. He lied in state at Yankee Stadium and St. Patrick's Cathedral more than 100,000 mourners would show their respects.August 16th, 2010 New York Giant Great, Bobby Thompson passes away. On October 3rd 1951, dubbed the "Shot Heard 'Round the World," Thompson hit a game-deciding, three-run home run the final game of a three-game playoff between the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. It is considered by many to be one of the most memorable and dramatic homers in baseball history. August 16th 1940- Jimmie Foxx smashes two homers to help the Red Sox beat the Senators. The two round trippers move him ahead of Lou Gehrig on the all-time list with a total of 495. 2August 16th, 1966 - Willie Mays hits his 534th home run, matching Jimmie Foxx's record for right-handed batters, as Gaylord Perry beats the Cardinals, 3 - 1.August 16th 2002 The Twins down the Red Sox, 5 - 0, in the process ending Pedro Martinez's scoreless inning streak at 35. It is the longest such streak in the majors since 2000. Pedro's 2000 season is considered by many to be the best season ever pitched in the history of the game.

EPISODE 87: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: There is no such thing as being "slightly Nazi" and that is the reason, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, The House Judiciary Republicans, Tucker Carlson, Paul Gosar, Greg Gutfeld, Benny Johnson, Jeanine Pirro, Will Cain, and Jason Whitlock, you do not excuse and rationalize and defend somebody who had only said relatively minor antisemitic things. Because one day they will announce "I see good things about Hitler" and "I love Nazis." (12:44) As a gentile of largely German heritage I learned this lesson when I was a kid, the day my Dad came back having stormed out of a final interview for a great job because the directors really wanted to be reassured he wasn't Jewish. "It is always there," he said. "It is always beneath the surface. And often as we think we have gotten rid of it for good, still it is there. And I've had to fight it. And I had to fight it today. And YOU'LL have to fight it tomorrow." Because - there IS no such thing as being "slightly Nazi." B-Block (18:46) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Jupiter in New York (19:39) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Senate abandons Rail Workers, Herschel Walker threatens and hallucinates again, and CNN fires Chris Cillizza - and why that's bad news for Joe Biden! (23:09) IN SPORTS: Chaos after Germany is eliminated at the World Cup, and the passing of baseball spitball - and NON-spitball - pitcher Gaylord Perry (24:55) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: New York City hiring a "Citywide Director of Rodent Mitigation" competes with Herschel, and ABC's Amy Robach for the honors. C-Block (29:22) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: One of the very few times the great humorist dipped a toe in the world of the occult: how Thurber's imagination turns an accent into a man who "traffics with the devil" in "The Black Magic Of Barney Haller."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beloved Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry died on Thursday at age 84. The first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in the AL and NL, Perry won over 300 games and was a 5 time All Star who threw a no hitter. He was also a notorious spit ball thrower and gleefully told stories in his retirement about how he would throw an illegal pitch. The act of cheating is also on the minds of baseball fans as the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee will decide the Cooperstown fate of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Rafael Palmeiro.Meanwhile the Astros have the cloud of cheating still hanging over their heads even though there is almost a total turnover from the 2017 squad. Why do some cheaters become beloved and others can never find forgiveness?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
