When faced with a storm, cows and buffaloes react in quite different ways. As the storm approaches, cows gather and attempt to run away from the storm. By doing this, the cow actually ends up running with the storm, thus spending more time and misery in the storm itself. A buffalo, on the other hand, waits for the crest of the storm to arrive and then runs straight into it. Although the buffalo may actually feel the intensity of the storm more acutely, it will actually spend less time in the storm itself and be the other side far more quickly than the cow. After Dolores' 24-year-old son, Eric, died in a car accident, she was determined to face the pain head on. As easy as it might have been to try to hide from the pain, she did not. She allowed herself to truly feel it. She read every book on grief and near-death experiences she could find. By doing so, Dolores said that she learned so much about pain and faith. She realized that before Eric's death, she had tried to put God in a tiny little box. She kept a prayer list beside her bed to pray for each night. Her faith was clean and tidy. After Eric died, however, she says that her little 'God-box' blew up. That is not to say that she lost her faith. It actually became bigger. Dolores realized that saying prayers each night does not assure us that we will not suffer pain. We WILL suffer pain. What God can do for us is to help sustain us through that pain and suffering. God can help us be the buffalo and face the intensity of the storm of grief head on. I'm sure that today, six years after Eric died, Dolores would not say that she is completely through the storm of grief, but she would agree that the intensity of the storm has lessened. By allowing herself to face her raw emotions head-on, they are not as sharp and stabbing now. She has her own website and has even written two books about her grief, both available on Amazon. The first, entitled Look Around: A Mother's Journey from Grief and Despair to Hope and Healing, chronicles her grief story, while the second is a book of poetry, A Bird Called Wisdom. Her hope is that others will be brave enough to run into the storm as well.

Season two of Johnson the mega hit is back on Bounce and streaming on Brown Sugar. This week I spoke with two of the show's executive producers Reesha L. Archibald and Eric C. Rhone.Series creator Deji LaRay stars along with Thomas Q. Jones, Philip A. Smithey and Derrex Brady. The cast also includes D.L. Hughley, Rosa Acosta, Chloe James, James Austin Kerr and Jessica Luza.A dramedy told from the Black male perspective, the series shines a light on hot-button stereotypes and misconceptions. Filmed in Atlanta, it follows four Black men who met in grade school and have been best friends ever since. And they all just happen to have the same last name of Johnson but are not related. After 25 years of friendship, they are finding themselves in vastly different places in their lives, threatening the unity that has always been so strong. They confront and find humor in the most current controversial social issues from the Black man's perspective, ranging from love and marriage to business, politics and religion. The true brilliance of Johnsons is that you do not have to be black to enjoy or be entertained by the show. Every topic they address most of all face us can relate. At the behest of several listeners, we're finally doing a general "Getting To Know Us" episode. In this episode we talk briefly about our roots, who we are, and what led us to gaming. The majority of the episode is comprised of individual questions from listeners and friends of the show that had questions for us as GMs that they might otherwise not have had the opportunity to ask. We cover narcissism in GMing, character quirks that people might find distasteful, using pop-culture references, how the times have changed and how we've grown with them as gamers, our favorite types of character archetypes, and so much more.Website: https://icastspells.comTwitter: @passive_podcastEmail: passiveaggropod@protonmail.comShow Breakdown:0:00: Intro1:55: @GazpachoTT "What is the 101 on Ivan and Steve?"17:01: Sabz "How would you describe the difference between being a GM and being a player? Eric C 52, Married with a 33-year-old daughter 2 counts of Felony Burglary Fortville, IN Decoy 14 F Eric met the young decoy on apps such as Meet Me back in Jan. During that time and up to the 17th of April he was messaging this young lady very sexual messages as well as sending multiple dick pics. He kept asking for nudes during every interaction just to ensure it wasn't a scam. So here are some of his excuses he kept repeating: I thought she was 46. She never said she was 14(bullshit). Wanted to verify that she was a female. He really just wanted nudes. Kept saying it was a scam but continued to send his dick 6 times. When the decoy would send pics of herself his only response was “Nudes.” And he was very specific on wanting one of her titties and one of her pussy. Went from saying it was a scam to telling her he loves her (same date he was caught) and them back to it's a scam. When they mentioned just about every conversation led to him asking for nudes, just to see if she was a scam or if she was a cop because a cop would never send nudes. Claims all dating sites are a scam, and then says he met his wife on a dating site. Now here are a few of his messages to the young decoy: “You're sexy as hell baby, but more skin baby, I want to see your body. Maybe after we meet.” “It's been so long baby, after I see you (her picture), I'll come get you. I'll spoil you and we can hang.” When he didn't receive the nudes: “Yeah two nudes, your tits and your pussy ok. But you can't and I should stop talking to you, but if you did, it would make me want to come and get you to hang out and stuff. Damn I'm sad.” Typical grooming language. “Wanna have sex with me?” “I'll suck your titties and finger you good.” “I'm going to stick my tongue so far up your pussy, that you'll scream with pleasure.” “Do I need a rubber? Because I want to cum in you.” “I know you're young, but I'm lonely and stuff. I like you and from what I remember you got a sexy body too, I'm just scared of going to jail baby.” “Can I fuck you in the ass too? I'll be slow and gentle.” According to neighbors, this wasn't his first time.
Tonight we concluded letter 77 and went on to read letter 78. As we have seen in past weeks, Theophan is much more direct with Anastasia now that she has made her decision to enter into the religious life. In multiple ways, she has been tempted either by those who have no faith, by her fear of injustice and false accusation, or her desire to express and pursue her own freedom. Theophan warns her against all these things and the kind of false freedom especially that we cling to that offers no hope. In fact, Theophan refers to it as an “evil impulse that is evil”. We are called to walk the path of the cross; to die to self and to self-will and to live for Christ. We have not been promised the love of the world. Rather, we have been promised just the opposite - its hatred. Why would she want to flee her parents house when in reality it is a protective environment for her? It is there that she can learn the life of a obedience at the hand of those who love her the most. What greater opportunity is there to be formed for the religious life than this? Don't chase false freedoms, he warns her. The impulse to freedom is like chasing rainbows or desiring to catch shadows. When we look at the world we see unhappy people desperately seeking to assert themselves - often at the cost of others. She must learn to look at her life in the light of Christ and her freedom in light of the communion of love in which she exists with God. Anything else is an illusion. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:06:03 Art: Posting a follow up to Eric C's question from last week. While he was asking I was reminded of one possible answer to the dilemma whether to obey the Church 10 years ago or the Church one month ago. Rather than butcher the response, I've included the actual source. It begins around 15:28 and ends around 20:50 Two points I found helpful were the comments that in a crisis there is an objectively right thing to do. “You hold on to what was always believed everywhere by everybody.” “What has the Church always believed? That is what I must continue to believe.” And “The faith does not change. What was once true is still true. Either it was false then, in which case it is false now. Or else it was true then and it's true now.” The speaker is Fr. David Sherry SSPX. Hopefully you find it helpful. http://sspxpodcast.com/2021/12/crisis-series-49-father-what-can-i-do-about-the-crisis-in-the-church/ 00:32:13 Anthony: I've wondered if this applies to legal processes such as the cases for freedom to act according to a well formed conscience. OK, suppose you lose the case....would that change your acting according to a well formed conscience? We are called to accept persecutions. 00:35:35 Anthony: Would the truth of the cross apply to suffering under the English "Reformation," the French Revolution and the Vendee, the American Revolution....and current events like in Eastern Europe? 00:40:30 John Clark: I once had to confront an office bully…It was a good outcome 00:43:00 Lyle: Today, some of us were meditating on the Office of Readings regarding St. Polycarp's martyrdom. His last words brought tears to my eyes. “I praise you for all things, I bless you, I glorify you through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ, your beloved Son. Through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen”. 00:43:21 Lyle: Surrounded by the fire, his body was like bread that is baked, or gold and silver white-hot in a furnace, not like flesh that has been burnt. So sweet a fragrance came to us that it was like that of burning incense or some other costly and sweet-smelling gum. 00:44:18 Carol Nypaver: Amen! St. Polycarp, pray for us! 00:46:48 Erick Chastain: you get an academic department at a major public university 00:47:22 Erick Chastain:
John Leland (1754-1841) was one of the most influential and entertaining religious figures in early America. As an itinerant revivalist, he demonstrated an uncanny ability to connect with a popular audience, and contributed to the rise of a "democratized" Christianity in America. A tireless activist for the rights of conscience, Leland also waged a decades-long war for disestablishment, first in Virginia and then in New England. Leland advocated for full religious freedom for all-not merely Baptists and Protestants-and reportedly negotiated a deal with James Madison to include a Bill of Rights in the Constitution. Leland developed a reputation for being "mad for politics" in early America, delivering political orations, publishing tracts, and mobilizing New England's Baptists on behalf of the Jeffersonian Republicans. He crowned his political activity by famously delivering a 1,200-pound cheese to Thomas Jefferson's White House. Leland also stood among eighteenth-century Virginia's most powerful anti-slavery advocates, and convinced one wealthy planter to emancipate over 400 of his slaves. Though among the most popular Baptists in America, Leland's fierce individualism and personal eccentricity often placed him at odds with other Baptist leaders. He refused ordination, abstained from the Lord's Supper, and violently opposed the rise of Baptist denominationalism. In the first-ever biography of Leland, Eric C. Smith recounts the story of this pivotal figure from American Religious History, whose long and eventful life provides a unique window into the remarkable transformations that swept American society from 1760 to 1840.-Eric C. Smith is the Senior Pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in Savannah, Tennessee, and a historian of American Baptists and early American religion. He is also the author of Oliver Hart and the Rise of Baptist America (OUP, 2020) and Order & Ardor: The Revival Spirituality of Oliver Hart and the Regular Baptists of Eighteenth-Century South Carolina (USC Press, 2018). He and his wife, Candace, have three children.
Ever wonder what it would be like to meet one of your childhood heroes? How about getting the chance to work with said hero? Steve Stoliar had that chance, as he worked as an assistant to the legendary Groucho Marx from 1974 to 1977. Steve and Check Your Brain's Tony Mazur talked about those final years working with Groucho, which are documented in his book, Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House. Steve also shared his favorite Marx Brothers films in order, to which he (and most other die-hards) prefers the Paramount movies to the MGM ones. Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty in the Kenosha shootings from August 2020. The corporate press got much of, if not all, of the story wrong from the beginning, causing a cognitive dissonance to erupt in the public square. Many have compared this case to Nicholas Sandmann and Covington Catholic, in that what was first reported was entirely inaccurate, and the Sandmann family sought payment for defamation. First, Check Your Brain's Tony Mazur shares his thoughts on the verdict and the response, then Steve Oldfield (director of Rush to Judgment on Covington Catholic) compares both cases and what the media got wrong. Hello, listeners! Today, we're kicking off a series on the iconic Audrey Hepburn, and we're starting with her Hollywood debut: Roman Holiday. Hepburn plays a princess who feels trapped by the pressures and responsibilities of her status. While on a tour of Europe, she decides to abscond in the middle of the night, to at least briefly leave her responsibilities behind and experience Rome the way common people are able to. In the process, she meets Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), a reporter who realizes who she is and decides to manipulate the situation in order to get an explosive article. Soon, however, genuine feelings develop between the two, and they are forced to confront her status and what it means for the future of their relationship. Roman Holiday was an immediate hit when it was released in 1953, and turned Audrey Hepburn into a star overnight. She wound up winning an Oscar for her performance. The film was directed by the legendary William Wyler, who would go on to work with Hepburn on two subsequent films. Both of those films are well regarded, but it is Roman Holiday that the duo are remembered for. It's one of Hepburn's most enduring films, and was instrumental in establishing the persona that continues to reach fans all over the world. Looks like we made the cut! As a teenager, Cathy Rudolph adored Paul Lynde, from his appearances on sitcoms like Bewitched to his "center square" hijinks on Hollywood Squares. But for as silly as he was, Paul had demons, and they came out when he would drink. He also struggled with his sexuality in the more taboo days of the 1970s, and had a sad ending to his life in 1982. In those final few years, Cathy got to know Paul a little bit, and she documented that relationship in her book, Paul Lynde: A Biography. Her and Check Your Brain's Tony Mazur talked about Paul's early years in Mount Vernon, Ohio, which saw his brother die in World War II to the deaths of his parents soon after, to him heading to Chicago and later Broadway. Tanking is not a new trend in pro sports, but it certainly has seen it happen in waves. From the "Trust the Process" 76ers to the race for Zion Williamson, the NBA has seen their sharing of teams tanking for draft spots in the last decade. Jake Fischer is a writer for Bleacher Report, and he is the author of Built to Lose: How the NBA's Tanking Era Changed the League Forever. How much do you know about the 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge? Unless you're a history buff or lean conservative, probably not much. But there is some great literature out about his impact on the country during the prosperous and "roaring" 1920s. Amity Shlaes is on the board of trustees with the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, and in 2013, she authored the book Coolidge, a comprehensive look at his life and career. She joined Tony Mazur on the Check Your Brain podcast to talk about "Silent Cal," his presidency, how he was viewed by both political parties, and the newfound popularity he experienced during the Reagan years. Amity's book on Coolidge is still available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Coolidge-Amity-Shlaes/dp/0061967599 If you enjoyed this interview, take a look at what the Coolidge Foundation has to offer and consider a donation, if you can: https://coolidgefoundation.org/ Follow Tony on his various social media platforms: Twitter - @TonyMazur Instagram - @tmaze25 Be sure to subscribe to Tony's Patreon. $5 a month gets you bonus content, extra podcasts, and early access to guests.
