The Washington Commanders continue their search for their new defensive coordinator after letting go of Joe Whitt Jr. The available names that have been interviewed include Steelers DC Teryl Austin, Seahawks pass game coordinator Karl Scott, Bears pass game coordinator Al Harris, Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen, Raiders DC Patrick Graham, Titans DC Dennard Wilson, former Cardinals HC and Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon, and former Falcons HC Raheem Morris. Who do you want as defensive coordinator? On the other side of the ball, the staff continues to round into shape. The offensive line is going to be coached by Darnell Stapleton, and the assistant to him will be Shane Toub, both promotions from last season. DJ Williams, son of Doug Williams, comes from Atlanta to be the QB coach over here (same position he held with the Falcons), and Danny Etling, a former teammate of David Blough's, is the assistant to DJ in the QB room. How are you feeling about the offense? The NFL Playoffs continue to deliver with close games, drama, and intrigue. The Buffalo Bills lose in overtime to the Denver Broncos, and are now looking for a new head coach after firing Sean McDermott. Bo Nix is now out for the playoffs after appearing totally fine postgame, but he broke a bone in his ankle, leading Jarrett Stidham to be the starter this Sunday against the New England Patriots and Drake Maye. The Seahawks and Rams will play their 3rd game against each other this season. Who do you have winning these 2 games? The Comment Mailbag features 17 comments. Thank you all for the comments! On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) to tackle some of the biggest stories in college sports, professional, and broadcasting. The duo kicks off with the Big Ten's proposed $2.4 billion private equity deal with UC Investments. They break down how the deal would work, why Michigan and USC's boards are unanimously opposed, and whether locking in media rights through 2046 is dangerously short-sighted given how dramatically college sports has evolved over the past decade.Next, they dive into the Tyler Skaggs wrongful death trial that just began in California. The Angels face $118 million in damages as the family argues negligent retention after communications director Eric Kay—who was convicted of supplying the drugs that killed Skaggs—was kept on staff despite red flags. Could this set precedent for team liability across all professional sports? The guys then unpack Mark Sanchez's wild situation from the past couple of weeks: from Fox Sports analyst to felony assault charges after a 3 a.m. alley altercation in Indianapolis. They discuss the bizarre details, the destroyed broadcasting career, and whether there's any path back for the former quarterback.Dan and Tarun also react to James Franklin's $49 million Penn State buyout after the team collapsed from 3-0 to 3-3, debate whether Matt Rule is really a viable replacement, and discuss the mitigation clause that could reduce the payout. Plus, they touch on Bill Belichick's brutal start at UNC and whether his contract protections will even matter if the losses continue. Finally, they explore the Utah Mammoth trademark battle with Mammoth Hockey Bags, comparing it to the Cleveland Guardians roller derby saga and discussing the SEO argument happening in real time. What to Watch For: Dan highly recommends Amazon Prime's "Evolution of the Black Quarterback" documentary featuring Michael Vick, and shares fascinating stories about Doug Williams, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, and how the position slowly integrated. Tarun suggests Netflix's "Katrina: Hell and High Water" for those interested and who may know about Katrina, but not the aftermath.Let us know your thoughts!***Have a topic you want to write about? On January 31st, 1988, under the bright lights of San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium, Doug “Uncle Dougie” Williams made history as the first Black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. Across from him stood NFL golden boy John Elway—and a chorus of doubts that had shadowed Black quarterbacks for decades. The game couldn't have started worse: a 56-yard touchdown on Denver's first play, a 10–0 deficit by the end of the first quarter, and a painful knee injury that sent Williams to the sideline. But what followed wasn't just a comeback—it was a seismic statement. In this episode, we relive: The relentless pressure of carrying history into the Super Bowl spotlight. The personal battles Williams overcame before even stepping onto the field. How one quarter of football—four touchdowns, a Super Bowl record—shattered stereotypes about Black quarterbacks. The enduring message his performance sent to the game, the league, and the culture. Doug Williams didn't just play in Super Bowl XXII—he owned it. And in doing so, he answered every doubt with the kind of dominance you can't ignore.

In this episode of Black Is America, we highlight the groundbreaking journey of Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl. From his early days in Zachary, Louisiana, to Grambling State under legendary coach Eddie Robinson, to breaking barriers in the NFL, Williams' career is a testament to resilience, intelligence, and excellence. But Williams' path was anything but easy. Systemic racism, underestimation, and financial disparity sought to hold him back. Yet, he persevered, ultimately delivering one of the greatest performances in Super Bowl history. This episode explores not only Doug Williams' impact but the long-standing biases Black quarterbacks faced in professional football. We also highlight historical figures like Fritz Pollard and pivotal moments in sports history that paved the way for today's generation of Black quarterbacks.

On the importance of Doug Williams and Vince Evans in the rise of the Black quarterback. On why sports history unfairly overlooks Vince Evans. On the scores of unknown Black QBs lost to history. On why Colin Kaepernick should be a Miami Dolphin.
It wasn't until the late 1960s that Black men were really allowed to play quarterback in professional football. And it took another 20 years or so for Black stars to emerge at the position. The lineage of runs from James “Shack” Harrris, the first black player to start a season at quarterback in the history of pro football, to Doug Williams, the first black player to start and win a Super Bowl, to Michael Vick, the first black quarterback to go first in the draft, to Warren Moon, the first black quarterback enshrined in the Hall of Fame. But in the past few years, we've gone from the presence of a black man under center being remarkable, to being, well, unremarkable. Andscape's Senior NFL writer Jason Reid literally wrote the book on this, Rise of the Black Quarterback: What it Means for America, and he's on the show to discuss how we got to this era, and also look at the future of the next man up.
