Since it opened in 1968, the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion has stood as a deliberate statement of state pride—and a beacon of resilience. “It was the first one that was actually built to be a governor’s residence,” explains David Morrison of the Historic Harrisburg Association. Prior to its construction, gubernatorial families lived in purchased townhouses on Harrisburg’s Front Street, retrofitted to serve their needs. When the Commonwealth decided it needed a purpose-built home—complete with security features, public meeting rooms, and private living quarters—it commissioned architect George Ewing to evoke early American manor houses like William Penn’s Pennsbury Manor and Virginia’s colonial estates.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, we journey into the heart of two of America's most magnificent national parks to unravel mysteries that have confounded investigators for decades. Two young men, four years apart, both vanished without a trace while hiking alone on well-established trails. Their disappearances share disturbing similarities that suggest these weren't simply cases of lost hikers, but perhaps something far more inexplicable. The Story of Timothy Barnes takes us to the crystalline waters of Tenaya Lake in Yosemite National Park. On July 5, 1988, 25-year-old Timothy "Tim" Barnes set out on what should have been a routine day hike. Standing 6'3" with shoulder-length dark brown hair, Tim was an experienced outdoorsman who had hiked Yosemite's trails many times before. At 9:00 AM, he was spotted by a family from Michigan, walking north from the Murphy Creek Trailhead toward Poly Domes. Tim exchanged pleasant greetings with them, appearing relaxed and confident in his white t-shirt with a distinctive red anti-fascism symbol, gray sweatpants, and yellow daypack. This would be the last confirmed sighting of Timothy Barnes. When Tim failed to return, one of the most comprehensive search operations in Yosemite's history was launched. For weeks, professional search and rescue teams with trained dogs scoured the landscape. Helicopters swept the terrain from above while technical climbing teams explored every crevice of the granite domes.Yet they found nothing. No backpack, no clothing, no signs of struggle or injury. Tim had seemingly evaporated into the wilderness. As we explore in this episode, the Barnes case is riddled with bizarre elements that defy conventional explanation:Search dogs exhibited unusual behavior, becoming agitated and confused in certain areasMultiple hikers reported compass malfunctions and static electricity phenomena on the day Tim disappearedTwo search teams heard what sounded like distant calls for help coming from areas that had already been thoroughly searchedHikers described strange, localized fog banks that formed and dissipated rapidly against prevailing windsThree months after his disappearance, a fragment of yellow fabric resembling Tim's backpack was discovered in an area that had been meticulously searched multiple timesPerhaps most chilling were the revelations from Tim's mother that in the weeks before his hike, Tim had experienced unusually vivid dreams about being lost in a landscape where "the geography kept shifting" and had developed a sudden, intense interest in the geological formations of Poly Domes. The David Morrison mystery then takes us to the spectacular alpine scenery of Glacier National Park, Montana. On October 12, 1992, 26-year-old David Morrison parked his rental car at Logan Pass Visitor Center and began hiking the famous Highline Trail. Like Timothy Barnes, Morrison was physically fit, experienced in wilderness navigation, and hiking alone. He had checked in with rangers that morning and planned to return before sunset. He, too, would never be seen again. The parallels between the Morrison and Barnes cases are uncanny:Both men were in their mid-twenties with athletic buildsBoth disappeared in the morning hours from well-marked trailsBoth had clearly intended to return the same dayBoth cases featured a complete absence of physical evidence despite extensive searchesBoth searches encountered unexplained phenomena with search dogsBoth disappearances coincided with reports of unusual, localized weather anomaliesThe most perplexing development came thirteen months after Morrison's disappearance, when a distinctive pendant he had been wearing was discovered by a hiker on a trail more than twelve miles from his last known location—an area that had been thoroughly searched during the initial investigation. The Unsettling PatternIn this episode, I delve into how these cases connect to a larger pattern of similar disappearances across North America's wilderness areas. We examine:The profile of those who vanish—predominantly young, physically fit menThe geographical clustering of these incidents in certain national parks and wilderness areasThe consistent lack of physical evidence despite modern search techniquesThe repeated reports of unusual weather phenomena, equipment malfunctions, and strange behavior of search animalsWhile this episode explores the strange circumstances surrounding these disappearances, it also serves as a reminder of the very real dangers of solo hiking. We discuss:The importance of filing detailed hiking plans with park rangers or trusted contactsWhy carrying emergency communication devices can be lifesavingHow to prepare for unexpected weather changes in alpine environmentsWhy even experienced hikers should approach unfamiliar trails with cautionGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AM
NCECA was in full swing and I wasn't there. So sad! So i did the next best thing... I attended through Instagram! Then I had the thought, What if I invited people that were posting at NCECA to call me for a short interview? So I tried it and it worked. These brave souls responded to my request and I got to talk to them while they were at NCECA. https://ThePottersCast.com/1119
Pastor David Morrison Hebrews 4:12-16 (NLT)- There was a pattern in the Old Testament where God rescues His people, and they say that they would return to their past of worshipping other gods, and then they would be separated from God. It was a continuous cycle.- It seems ridiculous. The author of Hebrews says not to make the same mistake. Hebrews 3:12 (NLT)- When things get hard, who or what is the authority that we allow to shape our lives?- What God has healed me from I no longer am.- Here is why we don't turn back. It matters where we find our source and who is holding us accountable. Hebrews 4:12-13 (NLT)- To those tempted to turn back to something, the writer of Hebrews reminds us that only one can judge and see clearly.- If you are trying to return to a form of legalism, only one thing can expose your innermost thoughts and motivations—Jesus. It's not Moses, it's not the law, it's nothing else! Hebrews 4:14 (NLT)- Another translation says, Stand Firm.- What does it mean when it says that Jesus is the high priest?- We no longer need a high priest to offer sacrifice, instead we have a perfect one, Jesus who faced all the temptations of this world and never faltered.- So, the thing that influences your life and that you would normally look back on…stands the call to STAND FIRM.- Stand firm means no retreating. God is calling you to let the good things remain in the past, so that you can experience greater things. Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)- Come boldly to the throne.- This place held the ark of the covenant, called the holy of holies.- It was past the outer courts, and there was a place called the Holy Place, where offerings were given, a lamp with seven candles (a menorah), and a Holy of Holies…separated by a veil.- When Christ died, the veil that kept people from God's presence was torn. We no longer needed a human high priest because Jesus was the great high priest now! He would intercede with the Father on our behalf…and now we have an invitation to come boldly before the throne of God.Here is an invitation to press into God's presence in His most holy place, where the only light needed is His presence. This is a place where grace and mercy are found. But here is where I feel tension. It's like we know we can step into God's presence, but to do that, I need to let go of things in my life.

The iconic strawberry drop in the City of Harrisburg was established in 1990 the same year that the Hilton opened. “When the Hilton was finally built, and downtown Harrisburg was really on the rebound and Market Square had been completely redesigned. And the newer buildings there and so forth. So, Market Square was a destination to really want to go to and to be proud of, “said David Morrison, Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association. The late Mayor Reed decided this would be the perfect opportunity to promote the downtown area while bringing in the new year. “They felt that a celebration in Market Square would be a good thing to do and that a strawberry for Strawberry Alley, which is what Strawberry Square is named for. It goes right through Market Square, “said Morrison.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Historic Harrisburg Association has partnered with The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania for their Elegant Progressions event on Saturday, December 7. Those who attend will have the opportunity to visit the Old Beaufort Hunt. Old Beaufort Hunt was a classic, English-style foxhunting club founded in 1929 by landowner Ehrman Mitchell in what was known as the Linglestown Valley. "And frankly, that organization is still in existence. They hunt in other parts of central Pennsylvania now because because the lingers Hound Valley is so built up. But the first house on the tour where we go for orders is called Fox Run Manor. And that's right in Beaufort Estates. And it dates from the 1930s, I believe. It's a wonderful colonial revival house and it looks like the Beaufort Estates area would have looked back in the 1920s, "said David Morrison, Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association. This is the 33rd annual event that kicks off the holiday season while fundraising for local charity. "It's a progressive dinner and it's a very formal affair. We have orders in one house, dinner and another and dessert in a third house. And all of our guests are are chauffeured in motor coaches from start to finish so they don't have to drive at all to go to these houses. And it's catered. We have wonderful caterers and wine pairings, live music at every property, and the properties themselves are just spectacular, "said Morrison. The 51st edition of Historic Harrisburg Association's Candlelight House Tour will be presented on Sunday, December 8. The tour includes more than 17 properties in Bellevue Park, Breeze Hill, and many historic homes in the Capitol View District. David Morrison, Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association, says research plays a huge role about the stories of the historic homes. “Very often we've got we've got a library at historic Harrisburg and a lot of books that the talk about what these houses were. We have old city directories which cross-reference the prior owners and so forth. People can research who builds it and when they build it and when it changed hands, that kind of thing, or the many other ways that you can research that you can research the architecture. Who was the architect that designed this, this particular house or this group of houses or whatever? A lot of that information does exist. And we love to help people find it.” Each year, visitors have a chance to see different historic homes on the tour. The only two that is the same each year is the Governors residence and the John Harris Simon Cameron Mansion. “Since 1980, the governor's residence has been on every year. And every first family has agreed that they would participate with our house tours and have their open house concurrent to that. So, it's a great way that they collaborate with us. But all the other properties are different every year, and it's a combination of, as I described, big houses, little houses, apartments in some cases. This year we must have two historic churches and occasionally there'll be a business in a historic building. That's kind of interesting. So, you never know what you're going to see, but it's always a different array of great ideas of here's what's happening in the world of historic preservation.” More information may be sought at info@historicharrisburg.org .Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's show covers the Côte de Nuits: the northern part of Côte d'Or, the famed ‘golden slope' of Burgundy. Map: Vins de Bourgogne The Côte de Nuits lies between the city of Dijon in the north and hamlet of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the south (from which the Côte takes its name). In this small area, you will find most famed, expensive, and best Pinot Noir on earth. Most producers make less than 1,000 cases of wine a year and the prices boggle the mind. Like the Côte de Beaune, this is a big topic with so much nuance. We won't meet the people we need to meet by waiting at home, we need to maintain a sense of curiosity and take action. [48:54] David recounts a story about an outing with his son to demonstrate how curiosity churns creativity, which opens ideas and opportunities. Opportunity is everywhere. [52:18] At times “no” is more powerful than “yes” when building a business in a way that aligns with our values and goals. David now realizes, that creating an executive management team earlier may have supercharged his business, but felt his ego was likely in the way. He's embracing it now as he starts to consider succession. [57:18] David's ideas of success are evolving but hear about two things he feels are fundamental. [60:58] As he gets older, David understands more and more that people will not remember what we drove, or the house we owned, rather the contribution we have made and the fulfillment of making a difference in someone's life. He shares a story as a great example of that. [68:29] David explains what retirement does NOT mean for him and how he does se...

June 1972 will long be remembered for one event in Pennsylvania -- flooding caused by Tropical Storm Agnes. It was one of those "I remember where I was and what I was doing" life-changing events. During this week 50 years ago, Agnes drenched Central Pennsylvania with over a foot of rain that led to record-setting and devastating flooding throughout the region and the state. The storm followed a path along the Susquehanna River which crested in Harrisburg at more than 33 feet – a record that still stands. Harrisburg and Wilkes Barre suffered the most flood damage but waterways throughout Pennsylvania flooded too. In Pennsylvania, 68,000 homes and 3,000 businesses were destroyed. Fifty people died. Telling their Agnes stories on Tuesday's Smart Talk are David Morrison, Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association and Julia Iaria, a Harrisburg resident at the time. David Morrison is a wine analyst and writer. He is an Australian living in Sweden. He has a PhD in plant biology, and that expertise led him to explore the wineries throughout Australia, learning about the high quality wines and vineyards there. Picture: The Wine Gourd He runs a blog called The Wine Gourd (winegourd.blogspot.com), which looks at wine from a totally different perspective – one that focuses on wine data. He seeks to take a more objective look at data, and he draws logical conclusions without an agenda, which means that most of his work provides new insights in wine that others can't or won't provide. Much of his work has to do with finding value for money in wine, the relevance of scores, and other major topics from which faulty conclusions are often drawn from data that is easily accessible. This is a great show, should be eye opening and if you are a person who likes hard data to back up decisions, you will become an addict to the blog as I have. Topics we cover are: How data is used and abused in the wine industry to forward agendas or opinions couched as fact Wine and health – from the article “Why we are never going to know whether wine is good for us or not” Whether or not biodynamic wines taste better than organic wines Critic scores and whether they have any meaning… The fundamental problem with wine scores How bad are wine scores, really? Do online wine ratings and searches actually mean anything? Quantifying QPR (quality to price ratio) for yourself (four-part series) Photo: Canva Professional How Global wine consumption has been declining for a long time Wine marketing and the wrong questions asked by the industry How Napa grapes are overpriced The future: wine recommendation engines If you really want to go down the rabbit hole on these and many other topics: http://winegourd.blogspot.com Sign up for his email notifications from the blog – you'll learn more from it about shopping for wine, selecting wine, etc. than from any other source. ___________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on big names or boutique brands from all over the world at up to 75% off! Today, we continue this conversation with Father David. It's an incredible story— so relevant to today's world crisis in Ukraine. A stunning, moving, and hopeful conversation where our soul meets the world! ABOUT FATHER DAVID MORRISON Fr. David Morrison is parish priest at St Anthony Orthodox Church in Bozeman, MT. He received his Master of Divinity degree at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary and a B.A. in History from Trinity University in San Antonio. Do you know what your boss wants? If you are a boss, do your teammates know what you want? In this episode, David Morrison and I try to answer this question. We've come up with a list of "Ten Things Every Boss Wants." However, we think our list is probably half-baked. So we need your help to finalize this list! How can you help? By joining our new LinkedIn group called "Team Leader Playbook." This is a private group, so no comments will be searchable or public on the LinkedIn platform. We want to create a community of team leaders who take their role seriously, who care, and who want to be clear. So, head on over to the Team Leader Playbook and jump in on this conversation! David Morrison joins me in the studio for a candid conversation about Kim Scott's book, "Radical Candor." See what I did there? Candid and candor. Clever, huh? No? It's not? Okay, sorry. Anyway, check it out if for no other reason than to hear the first cuss words ever spoken on an episode of Here's What I'm Seeing. Thank you, David; this episode will forever have that little "E" next to it.
