On Episode 103 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Skye is once again joined by seasoned podcaster, cinephile and expert on film scores and composers, Stephen Simpson to celebrate, for its 60th anniversary, one of the Film ‘89 team's all-time favourite films, The Great Escape. Director John Sturges, hot off the success of 1960's, The Magnificent Seven, once again assembles an epic international cast including Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, Donald Pleasence, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and many more, in an adaptation of Paul Brickhill's book of the same name. The story of the real life breakout of Allied officers from a German POW camp in WWII, Sturges' film, aside from garnering considerable critical acclaim, would go on to become a perennial Sunday afternoon TV classic with a memorable Elmer Bernstein score, and moreover, go on to be regarded as one of the greatest war films ever made.

John & Dave drink whiskey and beer to re-watch an American classic that Jeff hadn't seen before, The Great Escape! Directed by John Sturges, this Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner classic is long but mighty, with some incredible detail, and is grounded by a surprisingly lurid tone for a drama with serious subject matter that you never see anymore. We drink a whole lot of beer and whiskey and discuss, once Jeff finally gets done ranting about his hatred for one-word movie titles. Seriously, Dave went for a pee break and came back... he was still going and John joined in! Crazy. Conclusion Ainsi se conclut donc le 76ème épisode. On the night of May 16th, 1943, 19 Lancaster bombers took off from England heading toward the German industrial heartland of the Ruhr. They carried a new bomb, designed to skip across water avoiding any torpedo nets before hitting the target and sinking into the depths; then exploding.. The bomb was codenamed ‘upkeep’, we know it today as the ‘bouncing bomb’ designed by Barnes Wallis. Those Lancaster's of 617 squadron, commanded 24 year old Guy Gibsonwould become known as the ‘Dam Busters’, the operation was CHASTISE. The mission would be a success, as in two of the targeted dams were hit and breached causing millions of tons of water to surge down into the Ruhr region, flooding mines, destroying factories and homes. The crews that survived the raid would arrive back in Britain as celebrities, swept up in the wartime propaganda; and of course memorialised in books such as Paul Brickhill’s ‘The ‘Dam Busters’, of which the well known 1955 film is based. Joining me to discuss the raid is Victoria Taylor. Victoria is a Post Graduate Researcher at the University of Hull. Her MA thesis is Redressing the Wartime and Postwar Mythologization of Operation CHASTISE in Britain. Recommended books about operation Chastise. Cooper, Alan W. The Men Who Breached the Dams. Episode 57: The Great Escape. 1963’s epic war movie has become a classic, loved by many viewers and remembered for some iconic moments, most of them involving Steve McQueen who is arguably one of the coolest actors ever to grace a screen. Based on a book by Paul Brickhill who was a POW in Stalag Luft III when the break-out occurred, we aim to find out how accurately the movie follows the reality of the breakout, the men involved and the details of their various experiences. It’s a big movie so this is a big episode with ups and downs and, no doubt, a few daredevil leaps across the fences of accepted reality (that one was inserted with help from the HbH literary crowbar).

According to London’s Times, Melbourne-born Paul Brickhill, spitfire pilot and Stalag Luft 3 prisoner, ‘set a standard in the telling of popular war stories which has never been surpassed’. His books about escaping Nazis, about boldly busting their dams, and about legless fighter pilot Douglas Bader became bestsellers, while the movies based on them are classics.
