Professors David Raubenheimer and Stephen Simpson argue in their book, Eat Like the Animals, that over the course of recent decades the share of calories from protein in people's diets has declined (especially in the US). RaboResearch's Nick Fereday covered the topic in a recent report that generated quite some feedback. Therefore, we invited the professors to explain their hypothesis in greater detail. The resulting podcast is a truly fascinating listen. Everything you wanted to know about protein is explained; also, the so-what of the thesis for food companies is addressed.

David Raubenheimer is a Professor of Nutritional Ecology at the University of Sydney who specialises in nutritional and appetite regulation. His approach is comparative, using ecological and evolutionary diversity to understand these interactions. David's studies of insects, fish, birds and a variety of mammals have helped develop a new approach to human nutrition-related problems, such as the dietary causes of obesity. Stephen Simpson is a Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. He has a background in experimental psychology, zoology and nutritional biology. Stephen is one of the world's foremost entomologists and nutritional biologists, and in 2015 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to biological and biomedical science.David and Stephen have been working together for decades on a unifying approach to nutrition and energy balance. Their investigations began with the question of why animals in the wild are so capable of regulating their food intake as to avoid the conditions of excess that humans are experiencing at startling rates. This led them to investigate the impacts of various ratios of macronutrients on food intake in animals from locusts to primates. Their findings led them to formulate the “Protein Leverage Hypothesis”, which broadly states that animals prioritise the consumption of protein and eat various foods until a ‘target' of protein is met.David & Stephen's Work:Eat Like The AnimalsThe Nature of NutritionObesity: the protein leverage hypothesisNutrition, ecology and nutritional ecology: toward an integrated frameworkMy Work:WebsiteConsultationInstagramYoutubeLinktree

Dr. Stephen J. Simpson and Dr. David Raubenheimer are renowned scientists known for their work in the field of nutritional ecology. Their research primarily focuses on understanding how organisms, including humans, regulate their intake of nutrients and how this affects their health and behavior. Dr. Stephen Simpson is an Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and a Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. His research has spanned several disciplines, from studying locusts to human obesity, and he has been influential in developing the field of nutritional ecology. Dr. David Raubenheimer, also affiliated with the University of Sydney, holds the Leonard P. Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology. His research involves the study of nutrition and its effects across a wide range of species, including humans. He has worked extensively on the concept of nutritional geometry, which is a framework for understanding how animals and humans make decisions about what and how much to eat. Together, Simpson and Raubenheimer developed the "Protein Leverage Hypothesis," which suggests that the protein content of the diet can strongly influence total energy intake and thus has significant implications for understanding obesity. Their collaborative work has been pivotal in highlighting the complex interactions between diet composition, appetite, and health, making significant contributions to both basic biology and implications for human health and nutrition.   BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES: (08:00) Every species studied in their natural, undisturbed environments thrive in their nutritional balance. (28:07) Eating more, per se, isn't the problem. It's when that food is higher in energy density than fiber that leads to overeating and, by extension, obesity. (38:58) Much of the fruit we eat is not entirely natural due to the modification they go through in farms. (46:02) Over time, our bodies have adapted to thrive in the environment in which human beings find themselves. Today, we continue to adapt, but not necessarily for the better. Director John Sturges, hot off the success of 1960's, The Magnificent Seven, once again assembles an epic international cast including Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, Donald Pleasence, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and many more, in an adaptation of Paul Brickhill's book of the same name. The story of the real life breakout of Allied officers from a German POW camp in WWII, Sturges' film, aside from garnering considerable critical acclaim, would go on to become a perennial Sunday afternoon TV classic with a memorable Elmer Bernstein score, and moreover, go on to be regarded as one of the greatest war films ever made.

Stephen Simpson started off his career as an engineer, in the corporate world learning many aspects of construction and renovation, including negotiation. He started looking for ways to make additional money, including side hustles, etc and real estate was one thing he considered. He purchased his first residential property, and along the way completed about 12 deals for single family, student rentals and short term rentals. He realized that residential would not give him the financial freedom he desired, so he moved into commercial real estate. His corporate skills came in handy as he negotiated bigger deals than residential, and has not looked back. Nick talks to Dr. Stephen Simpson & Dr. David Raubenheimer, both professors at the University of Sydney who have been research collaborators for many years. Their research focuses on understanding animal feeding behavior, especially how & why different animals use their sensory systems in order to consume foods so that their diets contain the right balance of nutrients. Understanding animals in the evolutionary & ecological contexts they evolved to survive in enables us to build a holistic picture of the general principles underlying feeding behavior. Topics discussed include: Macronutrients (protein, fats & carbohydrates) and micronutrients (sodium, calcium); the 'protein leverage hypothesis' & how this explains the modern obesity epidemic; how different diets can promote fat weight, longevity, or reproductive success; the optimal macronutrient composition for weight loss; the comparative biology of feeding behavior across animals like humans, gorillas, spiders, wolves, etc.The discussion is based on their book, "Eat Like the Animals: What Nature Teaches Us About the Science of Healthy Eating."Try Everyday Dose, high-quality coffee & matcha altneratives with functional mushrooms & other supplements.Support the showSign up for the free weekly Mind & Matter newsletter:[https://mindandmatter.substack.com/?sort=top]Learn how you can further support the podcast: [https://mindandmatter.substack.com/p/how-to-support-mind-and-matter]

With the first day of school in Arkansas less than three weeks away, campus safety is again at the forefront of the new academic year after the tragic school shooting on May 24 at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Two teachers and nineteen students died there. In the wake of that shooting, Gov. Asa Hutchinson asked the Arkansas School Safety Commission to review protocol for active shooters on K-12 campuses after multiple, systemic failures were identified in Uvalde in the aftermath of that tragedy. The commission released its interim report Tuesday during a news conference at the state Capitol. It included a broad range of recommendations, including increased mental health care for students and a statewide school safety tip line. Arkansas Democrat-Gazette capitol reporter Stephen Simpson has been covering the commission. He joins Capitol & Scott host Lara Farrar to share the major takeaways from the interim report. Listen in for some advice on how to assess risk and establish a comfort level before investing in commercial real estate [00:01 - 04:36] Analyzing Real Estate Opportunities Safely and Make Good Decisions   Risk in commercial real estate Risk is relative and there are different levels of risk that different investors may be comfortable with. Breaking down a framework for analyzing deals and discussing how this can be applied to commercial real estate deals.   [04:37 - 16:34]  3 Things to Consider When Evaluating Risk in Commercial Real Estate   Risk tolerance and risk management Commercial real estate deals can be riskier than smaller-scale deals. Risk management can help mitigate potential losses.  Understand risk in terms of uncertainty, loss, and time. Determining your risk tolerance It is important to have a good understanding of your risk tolerance before getting involved in a commercial real estate deal. Different types of risks require different strategies when managing them. Risk assessment is important, and it is important to have a team of experts to help with the assessment. It is also important to understand the local market and the competition.   [16:35 - 28:51]  Risk Assessment: Tips for Managing Uncertainty   Addressing and mitigating risks in a business deal There are four possible actions that can be taken in response to these risks: transferring them, accepting them, mitigating them, or avoiding them. Risks can be mitigated by setting money aside in advance, transferring risk, or avoiding it altogether.  Risk assessment Risk tolerance and comfort zone are important factors to consider when assessing risks. What should investors watch for in order to make smart decisions? My co-host, Stephen Simpson, and I share our insights on where cap rates are headed. Interest rates are going up, and this means that cap rates will also go up. We discuss how this affects buyers and renters, as well as developers. We also share thoughts on the provincial government's proposed housing wage. [00:01 - 09:01] Global Events and Other Factors Contributing to the Changing Rates   Insights on how inflation is driven  This is through factors such as supply chain disruptions, geopolitical events, and low-interest rates. Considering the variety of global events affecting the economy which could have an impact on rates The current market conditions are uncertain and this is an opportunity for those who are smart.   [09:02 - 29:06]  Have a Specific Plan in Place for Your Investment   How there is demand despite low cap rates The influx of immigration requires the federal government's attention to address the issue of housing supply. The market for real estate will remain strong in affected areas. When land prices become more and more expensive The development will either have to stop or developers will have to charge more. Buying existing commercial properties versus developing new commercial properties Consider the risk involved and the demand for the product. Ground-up development projects may be riskier. Before starting a commercial real estate business Have a team that can help you make good decisions and be aware of the risks involved in any given project. Investors should consider investing in properties outside their target market in order to get better yields and access to different markets.   [29:07 - 37:50]  Check Your Bias and Don't Be Crippled   The power of relationships New investors should take the time to build relationships with local real estate professionals. It can be difficult to build a relationship with someone online or over the phone, and it is important to take the time to get to know someone before investing in them. Looking beyond cap rates Cap rates can be helpful in evaluating properties, but they can also be limiting if used improperly. It is important to define specific parameters that work for you, such as size and location.   [37:51 - 39:37] Closing Segment   If you are interested in my coaching and consulting program, please reach out to me through email at  shane@shanemelanson.com. In 2021, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reporter Stephen Simpson won a grant from the University of Southern California’s Center for Health Journalism to work on a series about health disparities in the Arkansas Delta. In his six-part series, called the Great Delta Divide, Simpson explores a number of issues in a region that was once an economic powerhouse in the American South. Such issues include mental health, population declines, access to healthcare and the impact of the pandemic. On this episode of Capitol & Scott, Simpson discusses his reporting and what the future looks like for those who continue to call the Arkansas Delta their home. University of Sydney Professors Stephen Simpson and David Raubenheimer's work in protein leverage is perhaps the most important body of research around, empowering us to understand our appetite and what leads us to eat more (or less) than we need to. Professor Stephen Simpson is the executive director of Obesity Australia and the academic director of the Charles Perkins Centre. PubMed shows that he has published a whopping 361 journal articles! Professors David Raubenheimer, originally from South Africa, began working with Professor Simpson as a PhD student in Oxford. Many of his 197 research articles are co-authored with Professor Simpson. They are perhaps best known for their 2005 Protein Leverage Hypothesis paper, which aligns with much of our research and analysis of data from people using Nutrient Optimiser. In 2012 they published The Nature of Nutrition, and in 2020 they published Eat Like the Animals to bring their research to the public. In August last year, I wrote a blog discussing Eat Like the Animals. They subsequently reached out to start a dialogue to discuss some points of difference and agreed to take the time to come on for a podcast chat. It was such a pleasure and honour to discuss a range of topics around their groundbreaking research, including: How does looking at insects and animals give us unique insights into human biology? How did the Protein Leverage Hypothesis come about? How did you go from studying insects and animals to cracking the code for human nutrition? What were some of the objections to the acceptance of the Protein Leverage Hypothesis? What are the implications of protein leverage for diabetes and blood sugar management? Is protein leverage about eating more protein or less energy from carbs and fat? Why is it crucial to think about the interaction of all three macronutrients? How does someone know if they are getting adequate protein based on their goals and context? What are the downsides of a chronic high protein %? When should someone add in more carbs and/or fat in their diet rather than more protein? What does the future hold in terms of translating this more into the public consciousness? How does your research affect the way you eat at home? Do you have any tips on how people can apply this practically in their lives?

EPISODE 98 | Stephen Simpson is Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. After graduating as a biologist from the University of Queensland, Steve undertook his PhD at the University of London, then spent 22 years at Oxford before returning to Australia in 2005 as an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow, then ARC Laureate Fellow. Stephen developed an integrative modeling framework for nutrition, which was devised and tested using insects. This has since been applied to a wide range of organisms (from slime moulds to humans) and problems (from aquaculture and conservation biology to the dietary causes of human obesity and aging). He has also revolutionized understanding of swarming in locusts, with research spanning neurochemical events within the brains of individual locusts to continental-scale mass migration. Together with his colleague and friend David Raubenheimer, Stephen wrote Eat Like The Animals: What Nature Teaches Us About The Science Of Healthy Eating. In the episode, Stephen shares the single macronutrient every animal craves to satisfy above all else, the real reason why we overeat things like chips and ice cream, tips for reconnecting with our taste buds that can feel like they've been “hijacked”...and more!
