This week, the boys stay positive as they take a look at Ridley Scott's first proper film, “The Duelists,” from 1977! Starring Keith Carradine, Harvey Keitel, and Albert Finney, this self-funded film is stunning to watch, but is it interesting to endure? We drink and discuss! John and Dave also caught “The Amateur” (2025) in the cinema and offer a mini-review before John discusses some upsetting WGA hiring statistics. Grab a drink and give us a listen! This week, we head to 1964 to discuss John Frankenheimer's “The Train,” a film that begs the question: How much do train mechanics know about art? Just kidding, it's an awesome film with Burt Lancaster in the lead performance butting heads with legendary antagonist Paul Scofield as an SS Captain hoping to smuggle French art from Paris to Germany before the Allies liberate France's capital city. The MCU is once again in the spotlight as major Avengers: The Kang Dynasty leaks have surfaced online—and we're diving into everything we've learned. On today's episode of The Kristian Harloff Show, we break down the original plan for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, its evolution into Avengers: Doomsday, and what it all means for Marvel Phase 5, Secret Wars, and the future of the Multiverse Saga. Marvel Studios seems to have scrapped Kang as the main villain in favor of Doctor Doom—and for good reason. After Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania flopped and Jonathan Majors' legal issues became a major concern, insiders say the studio lost faith in the Council of Kangs storyline. Now, with Stephen McFeely rewriting both Avengers 5 and Secret Wars, and the Russo Brothers returning to direct, the entire direction has shifted. We're breaking down the leaked Kang Dynasty script that includes wild reveals like a Moon Knight team-up, Miles Morales' MCU debut, a Deadpool 3 crossover, and even a Spider-Man: No Way Home reunion. Plus, what role was Doctor Doom supposed to play before becoming the central threat in Avengers: Doomsday? And how does this affect the lead-in to Avengers: Secret Wars? Other stories covered: Captain America: Brave New World nears $200M at the domestic box office. A Working Man dominates Snow White in a surprise upset. Warner Bros. shakeups and early talks of new leadership. First reactions for The Minecraft Movie are in—and they're surprisingly mixed but intriguing. AND — in a massive shift — Warner Bros. has completed the worldwide sale of Coyote vs. Acme to Ketchup Entertainment. Yes, the previously shelved, fan-beloved Looney Tunes film is back! The Wile E. Coyote movie—starring Will Forte, John Cena, and Lana Condor, directed by Dave Green and written by Samy Burch—was shelved for tax reasons despite strong test screenings. But now it's getting a theatrical release in 2026, with Ketchup shelling out close to $50 million for the rights. Produced by James Gunn, this film has become symbolic of Hollywood's internal battles between artistry and cost-cutting. Marvel. DC. Box office drama. Studio shakeups. Leaks. Come for the nerd news—stay for the chaos.
This week on the show, Jeff's audio is crap, but the conversation is great! John kicks us off with a mini-review of Steven Soderbergh's “Black Bag”, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Once he gives his thoughts, we gripe about filming expenses in LA and the US as a whole and compostables before getting to our featured conversation, “Dial ‘M' For Murder”, the Alfred Hitchcock classic. The week on the show, we welcome back our music sponsor and artist in residence, DASEIN, using John's crap audio to discuss Spielberg's 2nd of 4 (at least) WWII epics, “Empire of The Sun.” The random year generator spun 1987, a year we visited to discuss Bertolucci's “The Last Emperor”, but we still gave you some set-up of what was happening around the world to add context to why in the hell two movies about empires set in China were two of the biggest movies of 1987. This week, the boys return to 1989 for the second time to discuss “The Abyss”, James Cameron's underwater sci-fi thriller that paved the way for much of T2 and Titanic. Starring Ed Harris, May Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn, the film looks real… because it is! After John kicks things off with a mini-review of “Last Breath”, we set up what was happening in 1989 before diving deep into the film. This week, the boys head back to 1996, a peak movie year featuring dozens of movies we've all seen multiple times! Dave kicks things off with mini-reviews of “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Companion”. John gives some quick thoughts about “Nickel Boys”. For our featured conversation, we chose “Primal Fear”, the movie that gave us Edward Norton and helped Richard Gere prepare for “Chicago”. Set in and out of a Chicago courtroom, this movie reminds you why movies were better in the 90s. And as John said, it's more than just a genre film! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This week on the show, the boys head to Jerusalem! The random year generator spun 2005, so we chose “Kingdom of Heaven” (Directors Cut Roadshow Version) to see what Ridley Scott had in mind for his swords and sandals epic with lots of class and grace surrounding the religious tension that has disrupted the peace in Jerusalem for the last 1500 years or so… probably longer. This week on the pod, after the boys catch up, honor David Lynch, and give three mini-reviews, the boys discuss 1993's “True Romance”, the film that makes you ask, is Quentin Tarantino a better writer or director? Not that it really matters, of course, but Tony Scott directed this Tarantino/Avary script to cult superstardom. It's Dave's favorite QT film (maybe), and Jeff and John realize why they both liked it and think it could have been better to watch. Crazy! Dave Green, Director of UAW Region 2B, shared insights on the United Auto Workers' recent contract negotiations and strikes on this episode of the America's Work Force Union Podcast. He highlighted the union's aggressive tactics in 2024, including the use of live updates from UAW President Sean Fain, and discussed the impact of these strategies on company actions, particularly at Stellantis. Green emphasized the importance of strong representation and the ongoing fight for workers' rights, while also addressing the challenges posed by the transition to electric vehicles and the need to secure union jobs in this evolving market. This episode with Green also covered the diversity of industries now represented by the UAW, which now includes healthcare, aerospace and law enforcement. He discussed the union's organizing efforts, especially in the Southern U.S. and the challenges faced in non-union auto plants. Green underscored the significance of union protections in "at-will" employment states and the phenomenon of non-union plants offering raises in response to UAW contract gains, which he referred to as the "UAW bump."

This week, the boys rewatch “Sicario”, the Roger Deakins- I mean, Taylor Sheridan- I mean, Denis Villeneuve film that took 2015 by storm. This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he'd never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. This week, after John briefly discusses "Goodrich", the new Michael Keaton picture written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the boys take on another Hitchcock classic to highlight the film year 1959. Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. Two of the three dive into this high drama from the early 2000's. Jeff is away but somehow still appears in the episode and doesn't sound the least bit like he's broadcasting from a phone in a toilet cubicle in Times Square (Don't try and find them, they don't exist) thanks to our AI audio algorithm knowing what he sounds like and his volume level. We discuss acting performances, daring editing choices and the cinematography of the film, and have a lengthy extra discussion about how streaming "TV show" budgets are out of control. 00:00:00 - Intro 00:06:37 - Mini Review The Outrun 00:10:10 - Gripes 00:18:09 - 2003 Year in Review 00:32:02 - Films of 2003: 21 Grams 01:10:27 - What You Been Watching? 01:16:07 - Next Episode Additional Cast/Crew: Alejandro G. After Jeff gives his mini-review of “Saturday Night”, the Jason Reitman film about the making of the first episode of “Saturday Night Live”, the boys discuss the Ernst Lubitsch film, adapted from the 1936/1937 play Hungarian Perfumerie, which also inspired the musical She Loves Me and the film “You've Got Mail”. The boys get romantic in 1955 NYC, where a simple middle-aged 34-year-old butcher named Marty caves to societal pressures and calls up a lady. We discuss! The random year generator spun in 1955, and we decided to delve into Paddy Chayefsky's pen when he wrote “Marty”, the Oscar and Palme D'Or-winning 90-minute slice of dramatic life film starring with Ernest Borgnine in his Academy Award-winning performance. Dave is Australian, so he was drinking Fosters, and John gave us a mini-review of Alien: Romulus-going, now that his Covid passed his 5-day window. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This week, the boys head back to 2012 to discuss “The Hunt”, the Thomas Vinterberg - Mads Mikkelsen film nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. After we take our ritualistic pre-show shot of whiskey, we discuss major films & film news from 2012, movies we've previously discussed, movies that inspire us, and share some world events from 2012. We then get into an open conversation about the nuance and film techniques used to pull off this challenging yet thrilling work. Check out our socials! The boys head back to 1945 England, where not much was happening (just kidding), to watch David Lean's 'Brief Encounter' as part of our Random Year Generator series. David Lean's first three films, including this one, were all Noël Coward adaptations! Didn't expect that from the guy who gave us 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. We're a drinking podcast trying to keep it positive, but somehow, Dave got buzzed over 25 times talking about this romantic drama rated the #2 Greatest British Film of all time by the British Film Institute! The boys head to 1995 to discuss ‘Leaving Las Vegas', Nicolas Cage's Oscar-winning role, and whether or not there can be such a thing as too much jazz scatting in a film score. We set the scene, give you some context of world and film news from 1995, and sink our teeth into a productive conversation about this emotional film about an alcoholic (Cage) and his prostitute friend, Elizabeth Shue. This week on the pod, Dave gives a brief, spoiler-free recommendation of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine' before the boys take a trip back to 2018 to discuss David Robert Mitchell's ‘Under the Silver Lake'. The random year generator spun 2018, and the boys didn't want to discuss the big money-makers of the year. Screw them. The boys grab a beer and head to Shinbone, the fictional town in a western US territory in the old West, to discuss ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance': Films of 1962. The newest edition to our “Random Year Generator” was tons of fun to discuss, making jabs at John Ford's notoriously fiery antics, John Wayne and Jimmy Stewarts contrasting acting styles, Lee Marvin's screen presence, and how there were that many steaks in the old west- how were any cows left! Poet Ian McMillan has a gift for the art of small pleasures; the joy of close observation; revelling in everyday things, places and encounters; describing and re-describing them endlessly. In the company of fellow poets Helen Mort, Steve Ely and Dave Green he takes us to ordinary places that fascinate him: a railway platform with a striking red bench, on a bus journey, to a village cafe, and a local museum of curiosities; where we discover they can be portals into different ways of thinking, of feeling, and of being, where anything can happen, where the ordinary can become the extraordinary if we simply open our eyes and our ears. This week, Jeff and Dave discuss the Denzel Washington cult neo-classic ‘Fallen': Films of 1998 as part of our “Random Year Generator” series. I already hate myself for saying “neo-classic”. But it is… it's been almost 30 years! And it's a cult classic because it's not “Se7en” or something, but it's so fun. Dave says it's a perfect movie. A perfect movie!! Wow, Dave. Since we are a drinking podcast, we get the drinks flowing with a few gripes about society, showing up to the theater on time, and the new ‘Star Wars: Acolyte'. This week, the boys are again joined by MATT of our brother pod, THE MATT AND MARK MOVIE SHOW, to drink and talk movies! After Matt, a horror and B-movie afficianado, pitches the horror platform SHUDDER, which ‘Baghead' exclusively streams on, we have a ‘FURIOSA' mini-review before gripes about allergies, AMC 42nd Street, and the human condition. For our featured conversation, we go through some 2023 film year highlights before getting into our featured conversation about ‘BAGHEAD,' so as not to be confused with ‘Baghdad.' What a Creep“Coyote V. Acme Controversy”Season 24, Episode 4In February 1980, The New Yorker magazine published a satire called "Coyote V. Acme" written by Ian Frazier. The story was about Wile E. Coyote suing Acme, the company that supplied him with the equipment he used to try and catch the Road Runner, for all his injuries over the years. In 1987, the success of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" led to the combination of animation and live actors in this story. However, it wasn't until the 2020s that Warner Brothers hired writer Samy Burch and director Dave Green to bring the project to life. The film was completed in 2022, but now the parent company refuses to release it and instead writes it off for tax purposes. Despite considering other outlets, the $75 million price tag makes it unlikely that Warner Brothers will negotiate another deal. The film's controversy-causing release has caused a media storm.
