In this episode of Zero to CEO, I speak with Paula Paul, Founder and Distinguished Engineer at Greyshore, about how companies can drive real value from open source software. With over four decades of experience in tech, Paula shares insights on open source supply chain security, the power of community, and how organizations can adopt cloud-native technologies more efficiently. We also explore the shift from “every company is a tech company” to “every company is a SaaS company,” and Paula reflects on her remarkable journey as a woman in tech since the 1980s. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in software innovation, digital transformation, and the future of technology.
What happens when four decades of hands-on engineering experience meet today's fast-moving AI and open-source ecosystem? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with Paula Paul, Founder and Distinguished Engineer at Greyshore, to explore that intersection. Paula began her tech career in the early 1980s writing code for IBM mainframes and has since become a trusted voice in enterprise modernization, cloud adoption, and open-source governance. Today, she advises organizations on how to build with confidence in an era defined by complex software supply chains, generative AI, and evolving SaaS models. We recorded this conversation during a time when many organizations are feeling the pressure to adopt AI and modernize legacy systems, but struggle with where to begin. Paula offers grounded insights on how to break down replatforming into value-driven streams and why a “big bang” transformation approach is often more risk than reward. She also talks about the critical role of open source in business today—not just from a tooling standpoint, but in terms of responsibility, transparency, and community. Paula's perspective is refreshingly practical. She believes AI is a natural evolution of decades of computing and storage expansion but urges companies to start with targeted experiments and thoughtful team collaboration. She also shares her experiences as a woman in tech since the 1980s, reflecting on what's changed and what hasn't and how leadership dynamics continue to shape opportunities for women in the industry. Beyond the code, Paula draws a fascinating parallel between music and technology. As a board member of the Brookline Music School and an oboe and English horn student, she explores how musical thinking can enhance software development's rhythm, structure, and leadership. If you're navigating modernization, curious about AI's role in development, or wondering how to make open source work for your organization—technically and strategically—this episode has something for you. How are you balancing technical ambition with long-term value? Let's continue the conversation.

Welcome to the Artificial Intelligence Podcast with Jonathan Green! In this episode, we're delving into the ever-evolving world of AI with our special guest, Paula Paul, an industry veteran with a wealth of experience in software engineering and AI consulting.Paula offers an insightful perspective on the expansive and sometimes misunderstood realm of AI, drawing on her extensive background in computing. We explore how AI has transitioned from deterministic decision-making tools to probabilistic language models, transforming the way humans interact with technology. Paula shares how AI has evolved past the rigid syntax of early computing days to a more intuitive interface where imperfect input can still yield accurate results, enhancing accessibility for non-technical users.Notable Quotes:"The challenges are around the way people relate to technology and the change management involved." - [Paula Paul] "Every job that's replaced by AI will just create new opportunities." - [Jonathan Green] "Technology is really abundant and easy, and the challenges are around the way people relate to it." - [Paula Paul] "AI is really a very helpful tool, but it's wrong a lot and you still need someone there to go, wait a minute, that's the wrong answer." - [Jonathan Green]Connect with Paula Paul:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulapaul/ Website: https://www.greyshore.com/Connect with Jonathan Green The Bestseller: ChatGPT Profits Free Gift: The Master Prompt for ChatGPT Free Book on Amazon: Fire Your Boss Podcast Website: https://artificialintelligencepod.com/ Subscribe, Rate, and Review: https://artificialintelligencepod.com/itunes Video Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@ArtificialIntelligencePodcast
In this podcast episode, host Dave Sobel interviews Paula Paul, the founder and distinguished engineer at Grayshore, about the importance of open source in businesses. Paula emphasizes that open source is already deeply integrated into most commercial applications, with a vast majority of software relying on open-source libraries. She highlights the need for businesses to effectively manage and secure their open-source dependencies, especially in light of recent instances where open-source has been used as an attack vector for social engineering. Paula discusses the challenges faced by organizations in managing dependencies on open-source packages, which have significantly increased in complexity over the years. She advises businesses to become more aware of the open-source packages they rely on and to prioritize securing customer-facing assets. Paula also recommends getting involved with organizations like the OpenJS Foundation and leveraging services from companies like Tidelift and HeroDevs to support and secure open-source dependencies. The conversation delves into the risks and benefits of using open-source software, highlighting the potential for social engineering attacks and licensing issues. Paula argues that the open-source model offers more agility and community support compared to closed-source solutions but also stresses the importance of contributing back to the open-source ecosystem. She encourages businesses to support the preservation of open source as a valuable natural resource and to align their missions with the values of the open-source community. As the discussion turns to the intersection of AI and open source, Paula sees opportunities for leveraging AI tools to enhance open-source projects, particularly in areas like code analysis and testing. She suggests that service organizations looking to engage with open source should explore projects within foundations like the OpenJS Foundation, Finos, and CNCF. Paula emphasizes the importance of human expertise in cybersecurity and the need for continuous monitoring and rapid response in today's threat landscape. Robby has a chat with Paula Paul, a distinguished engineer with Greyshore Associates, where she helps organizations adopt cloud-native technology and serves the community as an ABI Syster, diversity speaker, and mentor. Paula entered the workforce in the early ‘80s as a software engineer with IBM , where she shipped her first product on magnetic tape. She's had roles in product development, engineering management, consulting, and she's led several modernization efforts along the way.Paula will highlight readability and unit testing as the two most important characteristics of maintainable software, and dive into what legacy code really is, how technical debt has changed over the years, and how the industry underestimates the emotional and mental cost of context-switching. From her many years in the game, Paula will also talk about her long experience of software modernization and share her expertise on why engineers should pay enough attention to cleaning their code as they go, how organizations have to grapple with different challenges due to ineffective technical decision making processes, finding the right balance of automated testing, and so much more. For those of you who are trying to figure out what direction to head in where your engineering careers are concerned, Paula will share her wisdom in what it's like to work in the consulting space versus a product-oriented organization. This is an auspicious week in aviation history. 13 years ago, on January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing due to their low altitude, pilots Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan.[1] All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries. This water landing of a powerless jetliner with no deaths became known as the Miracle on the Hudson,[2] and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history".[3] The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport. Everyone knows this story. It was dramatized in the 2016 film Sully, starring Tom Hanksas Sullenberger.Today we have 5 amazing guests who are intimately involved in this story, Vallie Collins, David Sanderson, Ben Bostic, Stephen Mallon and Paula Paul.
