fWotD Episode 2855: John Wick (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 27 February 2025 is John Wick (film).John Wick is a 2014 American action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad. Keanu Reeves stars as John Wick, a legendary hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe.Kolstad's script drew on his interest in action, revenge, and neo noir films. The producer Basil Iwanyk purchased the rights as his first independent film production. Reeves, whose career was declining, liked the script and recommended that the experienced stunt choreographers Stahelski and David Leitch direct the action scenes; Stahelski and Leitch successfully lobbied to co-direct the project. Principal photography began in October 2013, on a $20–$30 million budget, and concluded that December. Stahelski and Leitch focused on long, highly choreographed single takes to convey action, eschewing the rapid cuts and closeup shots of contemporary action films.Iwanyk struggled to secure theatrical distributors because industry executives were dismissive of an action film by first-time directors, and Reeves's recent films had financially underperformed. Lionsgate Films purchased the distribution rights to the film two months before its release date on October 24, 2014. Following a successful marketing campaign that changed its perception from disposable entertainment to a prestige event helmed by an affable leading actor, John Wick exceeded box-office projections and became a modest success, grossing $86 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews for its style and its action sequences. Critics hailed John Wick as a comeback for Reeves, in a role that played to his acting strengths. The film's mythology of a criminal underworld with rituals and rules was praised as its most distinctive and interesting feature.John Wick began a successful franchise which includes three sequels (John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)), the prequel television series The Continental (2023), and the spin-off film Ballerina (2025), as well as video games and comic books. It is seen as having revitalized the action genre and popularized long single takes with choreographed, detailed action. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:56 UTC on Thursday, 27 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see John Wick (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.

The father of popstar Lily and Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen, he was also a TV presenter, theatre actor, the man behind two hit football anthems (the Fat Les ditty “Vindaloo” and New Order's “World in Motion”, both of which he co-wrote) and a handful of small roles in cult movies (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 24 Hour Party People). Growing up, he was a troublemaker; he'd spent time in Borstal, was thrown out of drama school, even sent to prison.  Now in his 70s, as he prepares to star in a new musical called Rehab, he looks back on the moments that have made up his rollercoaster life and career with Krishnan Guru-Murthy, on this week's episode of Ways to Change the World. Leur but ? Be sure to tune in to "Epix Sunday November 13th Rogue Heroes is a dramatized account of how the world's greatest Special Forces unit, the Special Air Service (SAS), was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of World War II. Based on Ben Macintyre's best-selling book of the same name, the series centers on David Stirling, an eccentric young officer who is hospitalized after a training exercise gone wrong. Convinced that traditional commando units don't work, Stirling creates a radical plan that flies in the face of all accepted rules of modern warfare. He fights for permission to recruit the toughest, boldest, and brightest soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines. More rebels than soldiers, Stirling's team is every bit as complicated, flawed, and reckless as it is brave and heroic. Brown. You might have been expecting an episode on Prey, but NO! We're going to go ahead and do the movie that very few people liked rather than the new one that's getting loads of praise, because trying to follow a frustrating movie is WAY more fun than following a good one! Also... Prey sequels are really hard, so we gave up on that Expect a surprising amount of apology for liking several aspects of this movie, lots of off world shenanigans in the sequel pitches, and unfortunately some connection issues from the host, so apologies if some of this comes off a little disjointed! All three films were considered critical and commercial successes, with a collective gross of more than $587 million worldwide. A fourth installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, is in post-production and has a release date of March 24, 2023. A fifth installment is also in development, and was originally intended to be shot back-to-back with the fourth film.  Nominated for 10 awards and won 5. First time you saw the movie? Plot:-That is an old ass iphone.-Interesting way to start a movie, with the main character seemingly dying.-Really going for the emotional gut punch right off the bat, huh?-The fucking beagle... Sweet letter. Emotional gut punch, binding you to the character.-obviously John Wick has never had a puppy... Don't just leave it on the ground, not in a kennel.-Fitting the guys in the bmw are russian-So he goes to air field just to power slide? we obviously know nothing about him, yet. So what does he do? What happened to the dog during the power sliding?-The russian assholes are back; all for the car? Because they felt disrespected? Fuck those guys for killing the dog.-So John knows exactly where to go to find his car? Who's Vigo? The Carpathian? He did conquer the country of Moldavia.-Hey, look, it's the mayham guy... Guess that's apt for this movie.-Finally getting some back story on John... So he was an assassin. -So they're going to try and kill him before he can come for them... Obviously he's waiting on them.-It's increadable these guys only come for him one at a time... The knife fight was anxiety inducing.-Chat with the sheriff was funny.-What's with the gold coins?-Getting Wicks old friend to try and kill him is low-The pacing of the movie is bumpy. The fighting is fun, but all the other stuff is laboring.-So some werid hotel that everyone knows John and now a Matrix-esque club/bar thing?-How long does it take to drown someone? Always seems too fast in movies.-Interesting music choice in the club fight scene-Being thrown off the balcony, that wouldn've broken something... back, elbow, leg.-Nice phone call to the kid... Everything has a price. -Bourbon John drinks is blantons single barrel malt whisky-Willem Dafoes character is a shitty shot if he misses while John is sleeping. Interesting fight...-Didn't kill the girl assassin; guess there is some honor among assassins. -So he burns all the money... I would've taken a stack or two... Even though it seems he doesn't need it. -The car park gun fight... When he's hit by the car... Again, should've broken something. Concussion at least.-Cool they get to meet face to face, and John explains his anger... Don't really see that happening in most action moivies. Very emotionally driven.-That is ssecond shot willem dafoes character missed on an easy shot... is he trying ot subtly help Wick?-Can't imagine giving up your kid to be killed. ugh... almost feel bad for the guy.-I cant wait to watch this shitty kid get killed for being such an asshole.-Management gave him a dodge challenger/charger? I'd rather have the old camero or mustang.-So Dafoe was really... Da-ally... -Girl assassin still after him, even though the contract was pulled?-Uh-oh, they killed Willem Dafoe.-The girl assassin got hers... But killing her in the crossfire like that... Not too smart. What if one misses.-Its crazy, right when he jumps off the car, is when it starts raining.-Big fight wasn't that big... Few punches and a stab.-Back to the begninning, and he's alive.-So he steals someone elses dog? The end Top Five Trivia of the movie: Marcus Facts about John wick 1 When Kolstad was writing John Wick, he orginally titled the film Scorn then he decided to name his protagonist after his grandfather, John Wick, a businessman who owned Wick Building Systems in Madison, Wisconsin. 2 The Action scenes had to be muted. On location in New York City, Stahelski and Leitch had to exercise caution when it came to staging shootouts and car chases, and not just for safety. Their filming permit didn't allow for blank ammunition, so computer-generated muzzle flashes were often used. 3 Based on how many dynamic action scenes the John Wick movies include, it is pretty obvious that filming them must be somewhat arduous for series star Keanu Reeves. As it turns out, that was especially true for the actor when they filmed the nightclub scene he had the flu at the time and was running a 104° fever. 4 Michael Nyqvist, who played Viggo Tarasov, had to have 80 stitches put in his head after a stunt went wrong while filming. 5: Director Chad Stahelski was Keanu Reeves' stunt double in The Matrix movies The story is loosely inspired by an incident in Texas involving former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who wrote Lone Survivor, about his fireteam's ordeal during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was given a yellow labrador puppy, whom he named DASY, after the members of his fireteam. On April 1, 2009, at about 1:00 a.m., Luttrell was awakened by a gunshot, and saw four men drive away. DASY was dead in his yard from a gunshot wound. He armed himself with two 9mm Beretta pistols and chased the men through four counties in his truck until police apprehended them. They taunted Luttrell, threatened to kill him, and indicated no remorse for their actions. They were later sentenced for animal cruelty. Luttrell stated later, "I spared them, because I've killed enough people already."    TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. Our next guests are 2 of my favorite composers in LA! They teamed up to craft a synth-infused score for the vampire horror-thriller Night Teeth for Netflix, the action-packed movie is the biggest project the co-composers have tackled yet, with wall-to-wall music and a gritty soundtrack that is essentially a roadmap of Los Angeles. Directed by Adam Randall, the film stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as a working college student tasked with chauffeuring two mysterious young women (Debby Ryan and Lucy Fry) around Los Angeles for a night on the town. But all is not as it seems, and he's soon dropped into a sprawling underground of vampiric tribes on the verge of a covert war. The film also stars Raúl Castillo, Alfie Allen, Alexander Ludwig, Sydney Sweeney, and Megan Fox. The composers also have noted that the music is geographically influenced, with each city within Los Angeles having its own signature sound and introducing a new character. Locations featured in the film include Boyle Heights, Hollywood, Downtown LA, and Venice among several others. The composer are... Director Chad Stahelski worked with Keanu Reeves on the MATRIX (1999) as a stunt coordinator for that film.  When screenwriter Derek Kolstad wrote the screenplay for a film about a bounty hunter that included crazy action set pieces, Stahelski thought of Reeves to play the lead role.  That film became JOHN WICK (2014) and the beginning of an iconic character and franchise. John Wick, who's wife died from illness, retires from bounty hunting to try to deal with his loss.  When a beagle puppy arrives as a gift from his late wife, he begins to find peace in his life.  However, when robbers break in and take everything that's left in his world, he returns to his prior life, searching for revenge and vengeance and once more find peace in this crazy world. Keanu Reeves returned to superstardom after being cast in the film.  The movie also stars Willem Dafoe, John Leuizamo, Ian McShane, Alfie Allen, and Michael Nyqvist.  JOHN WICK reviewed fantastic reviews and became a surprising money maker leading to the movie becoming a franchise.  A Patreon movie pick, Dark Discussions takes a look at the film that started it all and gives their thoughts.

On this week's episode, we see out 2019 with Greta Gerwig's Little Women, and we welcome in 2020 with Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit. In Little Women, Greta Gerwig couldn't have chosen a more beloved classic to adapt for her second feature as director, matched only by the strength of cast she's corralled. Playing the four leads on the verge of womanhood are Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Sharp Objects' Eliza Scanlen. Telling the tale of four daughters of a preacher in post-Civil War Massachusetts as they learn to love and live their own lives, this adaptation emphasises the novel's feminist message of self-determination.Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit shouldn't work, but the director pulls it off with panache. Never less than extremely funny, Waititi's performance as a cracked Adolf Hitler manages to easily overleap any questions of taste, backed up by a hilarious cadre of supporting Nazis (Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson and Alfie Allen). This anti-hate satire from the director of Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok will win you over.Plus, Curzon bring you a Christmas Day treat: you can watch Mikhaël Hers' Amanda on Curzon Home Cinema from 25th December, over a week before it arrives in cinemas.Follow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@samhowlett_1 - Sam@ks_powell - Kelly@ella_kemp - EllaProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast.
