Podcasting News: Spotify and Podcasting? According to an article, "Spotify was reported to be coming out with its own podcasting platform soon as well to corner a slice of the market. It is yet to be known whether this platform could deliver, but it only goes to show that podcasting has exerted a tremendous influence on the business models of such audio streaming platforms." Because of my Podcast: Nick Seuberling Nick form spnt.tv talks about his first time do a live stream from a location on the fist night of the NFL draft. You can find out more at www.clammr.com I'm testing some things, and I'm preparing to launch the Clammrcast. Here are some things I'm looking into. Questions To Answer: Why?: Exposure to the School of Podcasting who are looking for exposureHow Often?: To Determine how often, I have to figure out how long it takes to create an episode. Episodes are going to be around 20 minutes, so I should plan on 2 hours.Ease of Content: The content is created for me, I just read the listHow Will I Know if It's Successful: By people using a special coupon for the SOP Pros:The show took about 45 minutes. I get the list, and using my insane amount of knowledge of Microsoft Office (I've been teaching it for 20+ years) I take the Excel sheet I get from Clammr and turn it into a pdf and show notes. All I do is open the pdf and click the links. I record it live and comment on it. Cons:I have no control over the content. How Does This Apply to My Overall Goal? My over all goal is to pay off my student loans and do podcast consulting full time. Does this podcast tie into that? Well it's cost me $32 to buy a font, and it will cost $10 a month for media hosting. That doesn't seem to tie into getting out of debt. So I will watch to see if the coupon gets used, I will wait to see what kind of relationships are formed by doing this podcast. This podcast is outside of the podcast about podcasting and might expose me to a different audience that is unaware of the School of Podcasting 22:30 Podcasting Tips From My Mom My Mom once pulls me aside, she was in the hospital, and there was a very good chance that she was going to die. She pulled me into her room, and started doing a "Death Bed" speech. When I realized what was happening I almost passed out. In the middle of the talk my Mom said, "You're.....so........ and then there was an awkward pause and finally said.... "Neat." We both laughed (this was a discussion where the seriousness of it was very heavy). It just seemed funny to use such a light funny word.  I am painfully shy at times. This past weekend I was at Wordcamp North Canton, there was a meetup in the morning to mingle and get breakfast. I walked in, didn't recognize anyone, and sat at a table by myself. Some habits die hard. My Mom was telling me I was neat to give me the confidence to go out and share with people. To go out and connect with people. I talk in front of people every day for my job. Yet some days, I revert back to my old shy ways.  So in honor of Mother's Day I am sharing these words with you. YOU ARE NEAT. You are special. You are unique. Nobody is like you. It's time to start your podcast. You can start it, experiment, and try something. If it doesn't work, then scratch it off you bucket list and try another one.  On Fire Podcasts? I recently did a search in iTunes (working on an article for Podertainment magazine) and saw that there were 25 shows with the phrase "On Fire". This has been spawned by the success of John Lee Dumas and his Entrepreneur On Fire Podcast. My question for you is, do you think using "On Fire" in your name is marketing genious, or do you feel it's lazy and tired (would it turn you off). Leave me a comment below.  Mentioned in This Episode Michael Hyatt Finding Time to Podcast Profitcast Ready to Start a Podcast?

Today I take a look at Podcasts.com a new free media hosting company. I've seen a few services like this come and go along the last 10 years. So many people get excited because its free media hosting. Here are some of the things that I have experienced. They show Adam Carolla on their front page along with people like the Twit.tv network. I would be VERY surprised if these people were using their service. I sent a support request over 48 hours ago and have received no response. There is no way to put the audio on YOUR website. Their system is all about pointing people to THEIR website. They create a secondary RSS feed for your show, and they offer NO redirect. In other words, they get between you and your audience. This is really bad Their stats are beyond basic There isn't much documentation for some of their features On the other hand They offer android and iOs apps to listen to podcasts They offer private subscription only podcasts They offer the ability to sell merchandise The site is owned by Emerge Media who state that "We're grateful to help 50+ million people communicate in 190 countries, find information and entertain when you need it most." They own person.com, directions.com, womens-health.com, information.com, muchgames.com, bands.com,translate.com and now podcasts.com Their mission statement is, "Taking on the essential roots of everyday tasks and breathing real life into the technology behind them. Empowering humanity in supporting each other and giving them the tools to create a meaningful society surrounded by technology." My Opinion As it doesn't cost you anything, if you've got the time I could see uploading files on to this service as a secondary distribution channel. Realize this may not bring We've Seen This Before Podbean is still showing twit on their front page (again, doubtful as they have sponsored bandwdith). Around 2006 Podshow (later Mevio) invested a TON of resources to make a web based system that made podcast subscriptions easy. It also duplicated your feed and people got REALLY mad. There is an article in the latest edition of Podertainment magazine explaining how people who use Podomatic are somewhat slave to them (as they control your feed, you have to upgrade to be able to put in the iTunes redirect to tell iTunes to listen to your new feed). The Average Life Span of Free Media Hosting How long Does free last? Podango 2. Mypodcast.com 4. Years Justin.tv 7 years Podshow/Mevio 9 years (they spent over 30 million in funds) Average? 5.5 year   Because of My Podcast - I Interviewed a Supreme Court Justice Eivind Arntsen shares how his podcast about the (loosely translated) "Legal ABCs" in Norway lead to him interviewing a Supreme Court Justice. You can find his podcast at www.dalan.no More Free Hosting Woes: Mark From Geocaching Podcast Marc explains how he saw a podcast in New and Noteworthy that played a prerecorded message from Podomatic because the host had burned through their bandwidth limit. It's a shames as you can pay somewhere between $5 and $20 to have unlimited bandwidth with companies like Libsyn.com and Blubrry.com (and you can get a FREE month using the coupon code sopfree at either provider). We host a haunted house in our garage each Halloween, so I took advantage of a captive audience and gave the parents a card that had the details of my podcast on the front and some "how to listen" info on the back (images attached). Most folks were familiar with podcasts, but not real sure how to find them, so hopefully this will pull in a few more converts. I also created a page on my site with a video showing additional info on how to listen (ran of out time to voice it over, so need to go back and do that): http://whatsuponearth.com/listen Thanks for all the great tutoring on the shows, and best of luck with NMX. Well last we I played a "Because of my podcast" story from Craig, and as Craig puts it, "I almost fell off the treadmill." That also points out that people listen to podcasts everywhere.  Fining Places to Network [16:20] If there are other podcasters who do similar podcasts, you might try searching for their name in iTunes. See if they have been interviewed on other podcasts. If they have, DO NOT go over and say, "I should be on your show." Instead take the time to listen to their show, or leave a VALUABLE comment on their blog as a way to break the ice.  New Issue of Podertainment Magazine is Out [21:00] In the new episode of Podertainment magazine, we have more great content from people like Rob Walch, Todd Cochran, Daniel J. This is the day record and produce my shows. Obviously I passed on the podcasts that day, but returned on Sunday afternoon as a welcome distraction. I wasn't really prepared, but as I had not missed a show over the last 405 weeks I wanted to keep the streak alive. This is understandable, but stupid thinking. What would people say, "C'mon Dave - big deal you're Dad died the show must go on!" I had a client who had decided to launch his show on a specific date. This is awesome. The bad news is you don't have 100% complete control over your podcast as its getting ready for episode 1. You may have someone who is doing the graphics, or recording an intro. Hopefully these people hit their benchmarks and delivery dates - but they may not. When I was involved much more with music marketing, I was amazed at bands who would plan their CD release party - when they didn't have the CD in hand (you can guess how that ended). The Pros of Podcast Deadlines It boosts your over all vision of how things will pan out. "This will be done on the 8th, then this will come in on the 10th, and then we finish on the 15th." It allows you to put a pin in a date an work backwards to figure out where to start. If it takes four hours to produce an hour long show, and church starts at 6 pm  you better start before 2. It lets you know if you are ahead of schedule so you can make informed decisions. It creates a sense of urgency. It puts a fire under your butt. It adds a level of accountability. The Cons of Podcast Deadlines You can't predict how long it will take to be listed in iTunes. I would guess three days, but I've seen it take 24 hours, and I've seen it take 2 weeks. You don't have complete control over ever piece (as I mentioned, graphics, intros and outros). Not everyone thinks good under pressure The difference between good and great is often that little bit of icing on the top that gets lost if you're in a hurry.   The Typical Podcast Launch Needs To: Choose a topic Choose host(s) Choose a name Choose a URL Purchase web hosting Purchase recording equipment Purchase and/or learn production (software) Order artwork Order intro/outro - find music Record a test show Record another test show Pick a format Mix down your recordings into one mp3 file Get feedback from someone not named Mom. Choose a schedule Tag your media files Order media hosting Upload them to your media host Write a blog post and attach your media from step 16 Validate your feed Write a description that inspires people to listen Submit it to iTunes, Stitcher, and all the other podcast directories. Deadlines help take your idea from a dream to a reality, but be sure to set realistic deadlines so they don't put too much pressure on you.  Get Your Podcast Reviewed [39:50] If you are looking for some unbiased feedback on your podcast head over to www.podcastreviewshow.com/reviewme  Podcast Questions Answered [40:45] Where can I find a link to my podcast in the Microsoft directory? There isn't a microsoft directory. They have an app for Windows 8, and it also appears in the Xbox. There are plenty of places you can list your podcast. Check the podcast411 website's Directory of directories? How do I Have a Link That Just Shows Podcasts on my Website? Add a category to your post in Wordpress. Today we are joined by special guest co-host Ryan Park from FoodCraftsmen.com Sharing Your Podcast  You can choose to make your show available on other sites by enabling the embedding feature in the Powerpress plugin. Go to powerpress, settings, and under the media appearance tab there is a media links area where you can choose to make a show have an embed links. Now anyone in your audience can put this on their website. For me, it makes it easy to put on my blog and other sites. In the case of the Podcast Review Show, I can put it on the School of Podcasting site and not worry about it accidentally going down the feed of that show. Ryan found a great article about a new player that people may be using (I would want to test this to make sure it doesn't mess up your RSS feed). There is a neet plugin that works with the html 5 player call Time Jump that I want to investigate. An Affordable Solution For Podcast Gear As I'm still in the Amazon dog house, I was looking for ways to find affordable podcast gear. I have used Same Day Music in the past, and they have a new plan that allows you to make PAYMENTS on gear (typically two). So if you want to buy a mixer, but its $269 you can make two payments of $135.  They call this Speed Play. You make your purchase and have 60 days to pay it off - no interest. Best of all if you're not in New Jersey, they don't charge sales tax. Check them out at SamDayMusic.com (affiliate link). How Many Keywords in iTunes Identify and Use the Right Keywords Just like in traditional SEO, high visibility starts with an understanding of the keywords your target audience will be searching for. You can use your favorite keyword tool to get started. Additionally, you should spend time in the App Store and look at the most popular and successful apps. See what words they're using to promote their app. This will give you additional ideas on picking the right keywords. How Do You Find The Right Keywords? There are tools like Long Tail Pro and Market Samurai that I've heard Pat Flynn talk about. They are both good (I think Pat is using Long Tail Pro a bit more these days). You enter words that you feel people might enter to find your store and see which ones are more popular. You can type in your industry and see what terms people are talking about, and again are more popular. Then you can use these in future shows. In a way its not so much different than SEO for the web. Once you have a list of targeted keywords, you need to put them in the right places. First, start by using them in your show name (if it makes sense).  This works similarly to page titles for traditional SEO. Additionally, try to use your keywords in your name field.   Cool Wordpress Theme? I'm hoping Mike Howard is in the chat today as I want to talk to someone who is using the Avada Wordpress theme. This thing looks so cool, and is only $55 at ThemeForest.net Currently is the the #1 sellign theme on Themeforest. I'm hoping Mike Howard is in the chat today because he uses this.
