I can't tell you how many conversations I've had with people about NMX 2015. Nearly every conversation I have about it includes someone declaring, “That was the best event ever!”  Why? Surround yourself with a group of friends that will encourage you, stick with you, help you see your blind spots, and give you that necessary encouragement on those hardest of days. Otherwise, you might give up when all your dreams are just outside your grasp accessible via a path you've just not yet seen. SGE NOT the Future, GBP End Days? Google Chooses Sizzle over Steak?

SGE has huge impacts but is still just a testing ground:  Some industries, like healthcare, are impacted by Google's SGE (search generative experience) than others with 76% of queries analyzed being impacted by SGE. While other industries show lesser impact, it is still significant. But SGE is still just a test and one that impacts those likely to enroll in these sorts of experiments, like SEO pros. While many SEOs fear that SGE IS the future of search, it is more likely a testing ground as Google figures out exactly how AI will be integrated into search. Businesses need to be aware of what is going on with SGE but not change any behaviors or tactics. What is the future of the GBP as a hub of SMB activity?Historically, the GBP (Google Business Profile)  dashboard has been the center of active development of tools to benefit local businesses of all sizes. The plans were always ambitious and new products were frequent. However since the rollout the NMX interface integrating basic functionality into the search and maps interfaces, we have seen more features disappear or be demoted and very few features being newly developed. What does this say about the role of the GBP within Maps specifically and search more broadly?Google, distracted by numerous tangential projects, should be focusing on the basics to protect their franchise:Given the belt tightening going on in Mt View and with the generally perceived decline in overall search quality, Google seems to be working around the edges of search with products that are newsworthy but not core to the search experience. They should instead be initiating an all hands on deck effort focusing on making their meat and potato Search Engine the best that it can be. The Near Memo is a weekly conversation about Search, Social, and Commerce: What happened, why it matters, and the implications for local businesses and national brands.near memo ep 142Subscribe to our 3x per week newsletter at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/

It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   THE SENATE'S E-BIKE ACT COULD MAKE ELECTRIC BIKES A LOT CHEAPER   - A bill that would offer Americans a refundable tax credit on the purchase of a new electric bicycle was just introduced in the Senate by Ed Markey (D-MA) and Brian Schatz (D-HI). The bill is called the Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment, or E-BIKE Act for short, and it's the companion bill to one introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this year.   - More people should be riding e-bikes than just those who can afford them. Driving is already highly subsidized across the country. We build cheap — often free — areas for parking, we invest in highways, drivers don't pay for congestion or CO2 emissions, and zoning laws and taxes favor sprawl. We need to start accommodating bikes — and especially e-bikes — if we want more people to switch to greener forms of transportation.   - legislation would offer Americans a refundable tax credit worth 30 percent of a new e-bike's purchase price, capped at $1,500   Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/24/22590792/ebike-act-senate-brian-schatz-tax-credit-infrastructure   TESLA REPORTEDLY RESUMES MODEL S PLAID AND LONG RANGE DELIVERIES   - Tesla has reportedly resumed deliveries of the Model S Plaid and Long Range variants just days after reports of a hold were rumored to be delaying customer deliveries of the automaker's flagship sedan. Several days ago, numerous Model S reservation holders were told Tesla would deliver their vehicles at a later time.   - Several sources indicate that Tesla has lifted the ban in Fremont, with reports of firmware issues being the culprit for the delayed deliveries. Teslarati contacted Tesla showrooms, and employees were unable to confirm nor deny whether the company did lift the hold, but did indicate there was a hold on the deliveries. The employees just didn't indicate whether the hold was still active or not.   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-long-range-deliveries-resume-hold-lifted/   TESLA SOLAR TEAM SCOUR SOCIAL MEDIA FOR COMPLAINTS ABOUT ELON MUSK   - Tesla's solar-power unit, Tesla Energy, asks a team of more than 20 employees to scour social media and reviews sites for customer complaints, a former employee told Insider. The person, who left the company this year and asked not to be named, said that as well as solving customers' issues, the team tried to get customers to delete their posts.   - A separate team of nine people looked specifically for posts aimed at CEO Elon Musk, the ex-employee said. This chimes with a job ad Tesla Energy put out in January for a "Customer Support Specialist" — the advert said applicants would address "social media escalations" aimed at Musk.   - On top of resolving the customer's issue, both employees said staff were instructed to politely ask customers to delete their social media complaints. Insider verified the identities and employment of both former employees.   Original Source : https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-solar-energy-elon-musk-complaints-social-media-panels-roof-2021-7   VW ID BUZZ GETTING THREE DIFFERENT VERSIONS   - VW wants to make sure there is an ID Buzz for everyone. The aspiring EV automaker explained that there will be three initial versions of the upcoming ID Buzz EV van targeting a host of different markets.   - The VW ID Buzz is first and foremost a spacious people mover. In Europe, VW plans to see a six-seat passenger version of the ID Buzz specifically targeting rideshare services.   - For American customers, the ID Buzz will arrive in 2024. The American ID Buzz will be a more traditional family van with seating for four passengers in the rear. Two of the rear seats will face forward while the other two will face the rear of the vehicle. Hopefully, your children or passengers are not prone to motion sickness.   -VW plans to build an ID Buzz specifically made to deliver all of the packages you keep ordering online.   Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/522257/vw-id-buzz-van/   CHINA: PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES REACH NEW RECORD IN JUNE 2021   - Plug-in electric car sales surge in China to new record levels as multiple models are selling better than ever In June, some 235,000 passenger plug-in cars were registered (new all-time record), which is probably close to 160% more than a year ago. Moreover, the market share increased to 15% and 12% are BEVs.   - So far this year, about 1.1 million passenger plug-in cars were sold, which is 11% of the total market. BEV share stands at 9%.   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/522274/china-plugin-car-sales-june2021/   DETHLEFFS & ZF SET RECORD CROSSING THE ALPS WITH ELECTRIC CARAVAN   - Dethleffs had already presented the prototype of a caravan with its own electric drive in 2018, which was developed together with the Erwin Hymer Group and ZF Friedrichshafen. Now, the project partners have demonstrated the practical readiness of the concept in a challenging caravan tour across the Alps.   - From Isny, the Audi e-tron Sportback pulled the electrically powered caravan E-Home Coco all the way to Lake Garda – without a charging stop. Normally, the additional weight of the trailer and especially the increased air resistance drive up the consumption of the towing vehicle (regardless of the drive technology).   - For this journey at an average speed of 62.4 km/h, the e-tron Sportback consumed 62 kWh of energy (i.e. 21.2 kWh/100km), the e-home Coco 74 kWh (19.2 kWh/100km).   - A towing force sensor is installed in the towing device itself. This is supposed to detect whether the towing vehicle is accelerating, decelerating or rolling.   - The E-Home Coco also has a recuperation system   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/25/dethleffs-zf-set-record-crossing-the-alps-with-electric-caravan   IRISH ‘LEADING THE CHARGE' IN PUSH FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES   - Ireland is in first place in Europe in providing charging points in service stations for electric vehicles (EVs).  A survey of 19 European countries showed Ireland has the highest proportion of filling station forecourts with EV charging points – 7.46pc of the country's filling stations have charging points installed. Denmark is in second on 5.37pc. The figure for the United Kingdom is 1.76pc, while Germany is at 1.04pc.   Original Source : https://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-news/irish-leading-the-charge-in-push-for-electric-vehicles-40687106.html   IN VANCOUVER, EVERY CAR SPACE IN NEW HOTELS MUST HAVE AN EV CHARGER   - The Vancouver City Council has approved new regulations that would require EV charging infrastructure be installed in all new non-residential buildings in an effort to expand access to the ever-growing population of EV drivers.   - Additionally, 100% of new car-share stalls and 100% of parking stalls in new hotels must also have EV charging infrastructure.   - Vancouver City expects the new regulations will have minimal increase on new construction costs while significantly reducing or eliminating future costs of retrofitting buildings for EV charging infrastructure.   Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2021/07/23/in-vancouver-every-car-space-in-new-hotels-must-have-an-ev-charger   TESLA MODEL S PLAID IMPRESSIONS: RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL!   - PLAID Model S is stupid fast. Instead, the cathode is stabilised by “specially developed doping and coating processes”. Thus, the NMX cells – even without cobalt – are said to offer a “higher thermal stability as well as overall safety than NCM811 cells”.   - From the end of 2023, the novel batteries can also be produced at the planned plant in Saarland for the European market.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/23/svolt-launches-production-of-cobalt-free-battery-cells   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With 2877 Superchargers globally and 25000 stalls, what do you think about Tesla's plan to open up the network to everyone?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

We have Nicole Baldinu, Co-Founder and COO of WebinarNinja joining us. Welcome, Nicole.  Nicole Baldinu  00:51Hey, Michele. Thank you. I'm excited to be here.  Michele Hansen  00:54I'm so excited to have you on. First of all, I mean, you guys have built such an incredible company. Just to give a little bit of background. So, WebinarNinja was founded in 2014. You also produce the $100 MBA Show, which won Best of iTunes in 2014. 23 full-time team members, 100% customer-funded, an amazing business. I am so excited that you're joining us today. Nicole Baldinu  01:24Aw, thank you. That's, that's really nice. It's almost like sometimes you forget, you know, where you've been. You just keep going and charging forward. It's like, yeah, we've been around since 2014. Must be doing something right. Some days, it doesn't feel like you're doing anything right, you know. Michele Hansen  01:43When in 2014 did you guys launch? Because we were also 2014. Nicole Baldinu  01:47Oh, WebinarNinja, like, around April.  Michele Hansen  01:51Okay. Nicole Baldinu  01:52It was around April, yeah.  Michele Hansen  01:53Wow.  Nicole Baldinu  01:54I know. It's crazy. Michele Hansen  01:56It's kinda, so, we launched in January of 2014, and we are still just the two of us. And you guys have like, 23 people, and I mean, it's so interesting how many, like, different paths you can take. Nicole Baldinu  02:14Yeah, and the number of iterations, I think, like, yeah, I don't even remember version one, you know. It feels so long ago. But that's true. Like, I don't think we in, like, even intentionally set out to just grow, grow, grow. You just kind of take one, one step forward, and you just keep moving. It's like, yeah, we need help, like, you know. You're answering all your customer support queries in the beginning, and then it's like, no, you need some help. And then you hire your first teammate, and then it just, just keeps growing. Michele Hansen  02:47So, let's fast forward a little bit to, I guess, would be five years into it for both of us. We met at MicroCon in 2019 and were basically instant friends. Um, and I remember what, I think, I think you might have come up to me, and you were really interested in learning how to do customer interviews, which is, like, my jam. Nicole Baldinu  03:17Yeah, I loved that conference so much. It was, it was such a, I think for me, that was the first time, it was kind of the first SaaS-focused conference. I think a lot of the conferences I'd been to before were very, I don't know about you, if you've attended like, other conferences outside the SaaS space, but a lot of podcasting conferences, you know, I remember the first, do you remember NMX? New Media Expo? Michele Hansen  03:45The name sounds familiar, but I didn't, I've never been a huge conference attender, so I haven't been to a lot. Nicole Baldinu  03:52That was my first conference, and that was January of 2013. And that was literally when I, you know, that was my first kind of foray into entrepreneurship, and so meeting bloggers and podcasters, and it was all just such a new unknown, like world. But I remember like, MicroCon being just really special because I just felt like, that it was, it was kind of like, I felt people were really honest and vulnerable and authentic when it came to talking about, you know, the pitfalls and the challenges of SaaS. businesses. And yeah, and I remember I loved your talk because I just felt like, you did, what was it like a chat, like it was a 10 minute tactic or something, or?  Michele Hansen  04:41Yeah, it was an attendee talk.  Nicole Baldinu  04:43Yeah. Michele Hansen  04:44Yeah.  Nicole Baldinu  04:45And, and I still have your notes. I shared this with you last time we spoke. I still have your notes because I just thought it was so helpful, so practical, and the, the crazy thing is though, when was that? So that was MicroCon 2019, right?  Michele Hansen  04:59Yeah. Nicole Baldinu  05:00That's the first time I heard, I think that's the kind of the first time I really thought, oh, you can do, like, you can talk to your customers. You can do, like, this kind of user research. And I've only done my very first customer user research this year, three years on, but I still have your notes. And it was, yeah, it was just super inspiring. I just thought it just seems like such a cool thing to do. And, yeah, so I finally, finally took the plunge. Michele Hansen  05:28So, let's dive into that plunge a little bit because I think it's, I think it's totally normal that it would take you some time from from like having that moment of being oh wait, I can talk to customers, to then sort of, not just like, sort of working up the courage for it, but also the time and, like, fitting it into your schedule and thinking it really, really through and so, like, could you kind of take us back to earlier, I guess, earlier this year, when you really started to hit the ground on it? Nicole Baldinu  06:03Yeah, and I mean, I should, I should also say that we had done user research and customer interviews, but it wasn't me that had done it. So Omar, who's my Co-Founder, the CEO, also my husband, business and partner in life and business, he had done the first user interviews, and kind of, because he's more customer has been always more customer-facing. He had done user interviews, but it was something that I never felt that I could do. Like, I'd kind of be behind the scenes and reading Intercom, like support, you know, conversations and seeing what, you know, customers were saying and replying. But it was all very much chat and email never like, let's get on a call and let's talk about it. So recently, we've kind of wanted to, the whole reason behind starting to do this is because we wanted to kind of refine part of our offering and also look at a potential MVP out of this, this offering. And so I just thought, I don't know, and all of a sudden, I just felt like I want to do it. I don't even know what, like, why I just woke up one morning and said I'm going to do these, which is, like, really unlike me. But um, but I just decided to, yeah, I think I made that decision, like, I'll do the interviews. And then as soon as I took that decision, I literally went for my notebook from the, to look for the notes that I took from MicroCon. I then went and looked at all your blog posts and everything that you had on, you know, on the topic, as much as I could like, digest in like, I had a week, I think, before I was like, I scheduled the first one. And, and then yeah, and then I was just like, okay, I have got my questions now, thanks to like, you know, I looked up some of the sources that you had, you know, referenced. So I went in, you know, okay, I've got my questions. Now I know what I want to do, I want to know what I want to ask. And then it was literally the mechanics of okay, get a Calendly up, send out the blast, like, the blast out on Intercom to actually invite people to, you know, to be interviewed. So then all those little pieces, too, that I think, like, I was kind of procrastinating on, they just all fell together really quickly. It's like, okay, you just got to invite people, people reply. You just got to have a, you know, a sequence to, you know, send them your Calendly then it all gets done, then you've got your questions. And then it just, then they just started. And then as soon as I did my first one, I was really upfront with the first. She was she was lovely, my first interviewee. And that was great, because I was very nervous and I just basically said, you're the first person I'm interviewing. And so that kind of just made me feel a bit more at ease. And, and she was just lovely, and just easy to talk to and just answered all my questions. And then I just realized, after that call I was like, this is so much fun. I love this. I think when we talked last time, I was like, totally geeking out on just how much fun it is and what a positive experience it actually ends up being talking to your customers. Michele Hansen  09:08I think last time we talked, which was about a month ago, I remember you said that it had basically become your favorite part of your job. Nicole Baldinu  09:19Did I say that? Yeah, it's true. It's weird. It's totally taken me by surprise. I was thinking a little bit more about that, though. Why? I feel like it's a very positive experience. Because initially, I thought oh, you know, there's the potential that you know, the conversation could just turn into like, this is one of the things I thought it would turn into. I thought it would turn into a let's, let's ask about, you know, support for WebinarNinja, like, show me how to do this or complain about something that's not working as expected. I thought it would go down that path, but it didn't. It just ended up being very much focused on the questions I was asking and, which was really focused on what they do, like how they deliver their content, and, and about their business, and about why, I mean, the, my favorite question, and this, I think comes from your blog post, and I think this is what kind of, I see them light up and kind of lights me up is when I asked them, what's the big picture? What are they trying to do? And that question is just, it's, it's just my favorite question on the interviews, because it just brings out, yeah, it just gives them an opportunity to really share, oh, this is why I'm doing what I'm doing. And they get to just, I don't know if I'm like rambling a little bit, but I don't know, would, have, you've asked that question before, right? Michele Hansen  10:55Yeah, I'm curious, can you ask me that question as if you were interviewing me? Nicole Baldinu  11:02Okay. So, Michele, what's the big picture of what you're trying to do? Michele Hansen  11:13And that's it.  Nicole Baldinu  11:14That's it.  Michele Hansen  11:15Like, that's only a couple of words. They're not very big words. Like, it's a such a simple question, yet you have found that that just lights people up. Nicole Baldinu  11:28There's only one person that kind of asked for clarification, and then when I had to reframe it, I just said, why are you doing what you're doing? Oh, my why? Oh, okay. But everyone, everyone else kind of, it was interesting, like, everyone else got it. And it all comes around to you know, they want to help, they want to share, they want to empower. It's just, it just brings out, yeah, it brings out their why, but without asking it in that way. Because I think if you say what's your why, I think if it's all, I don't know why that feels a bit more daunting than what's the big picture? Because the big picture, because sometimes I would actually expect from that answer that they would talk about what they're trying to achieve in their business. I actually didn't know originally where that question would go. That's kind of probably what surprised me. I thought it would be more focused on the business. Like they would tell me what they're trying to achieve maybe financially, or, you know, what their goals are. But it did kind of step back, for some reason it did actually generate the response of this is why I'm doing what I'm doing. That makes sense?  Michele Hansen  12:38No, it does. I've actually been, I was thinking about this a lot the past couple of days, because one of my, my subject matter editors for my book was, they made a note in the, in their edits, that I had a couple of why questions, and they reminded me that those need to be what questions, and I've been thinking about what's and why's all weekend, actually, so I'm so glad you brought this up. Because when we ask someone a why question, we're asking, in some ways we're asking for causality. We're asking why they do something, like, and asking them to sort of think through the reasons why they do something. But if you ask someone the same question, but you rephrase it as a what, it's a much easier question. Like, why are you here versus, what led you here? They're basically the same question, but if I asked you what led you here, you walk me through the different steps that you went through, and the causality can sort of come through the details of that. Versus if I said, why are you here, then you have to sit and be like, why, why am I here? And like, like, you get lost a little bit in the question. And so asking a what question instead is usually cognitively much easier to answer. And, you know, maybe, as you said, some people may, you know, they may appreciate being asked a why question after the initial what question. But for most people asking, you know, I mean, I do this with my daughter, too, right? Like, you know, instead, instead of saying, like, you know, you know, what, like, why aren't you down here for dinner yet? Like, being like, be like, so what's your plan? Like, dinner is on the table, what's your plan? And then that opens up to, oh, well, I'm actually getting this ready. Or like, you know, this weekend, she's like, oh, I'm making a card for daddy for Father's Day. Okay. Alright, cool. Like, you're not, this isn't an intentional thing. But so, rephrasing as a what I think gives it also, as you said, it gives people options to where to take that question. And I think, I think kind of as sort of both of us just had a moment of earlier on when we were talking of like, wow, I guess we have been doing this for a long time, and it's pretty awesome, and how cool is that? Like, we don't really step back and think about that very often, and I wonder if when you asked that question it like, it sounds like you are prompting that same kind of reflection in people, which, in turn, makes them really excited to talk to you because you're making them feel good about themselves and what they do. Nicole Baldinu  15:25Yeah, I'm just blown away by that, just that little explanation about the difference between the what and the why, like, it just takes the whole process, the whole, asking those questions to another very sophisticated level, and just realize sometimes, like, I don't want to, I don't, sometimes I feel like I don't want to think too much about it, but I think it can be so sophisticated and so refined, the actual process of asking these questions and learning more about people. I guess this is my first run at it, and, yeah, like, even if it's, if it's not at that level, whatever I'm getting out of it, I feel is worthwhile. And I know that I can take it to another level because I love what you just explained, and I think it makes so much sense. But yeah, there's, there's so many layers to it. There's so many layers to it. And it's true, I do feel that it does, I do feel that sense of like, it's fun, like they don't mind, like the crazy thing is it's like, I don't know how long the tick, a typical interview should be, I should ask you that, but, you know, I said, you know, I don't want to take up too much of people's time. So I just said, okay, I'll just keep it to 20 minutes. They've all gone overtime. And there's not a sense of like, I need to get off this call. I have to initiate that let's get off this call, because they're very happy to continue talking because we're both actually having, I feel like it's an enjoyable experience on both sides, which is really cool.  Michele Hansen  16:56Yeah. Nicole Baldinu  16:57That really surprised me but, Michele Hansen  16:59So that that makes a lot of sense to me, because you are, like, you're hearing about how your product helps them and, which, you know, you mentioned you, you know, pop in on intercom support tickets and whatnot. Like, I think for, you know, us founders who do, like, talk to our customers a lot just by default, because you know, there's customer support their sales, like there's, there's all those other things. But interviewing someone is so, so different, because they tend to, like,, it's much more appreciative environment than, than like, hey, there's this bug or whatever. But then also for that person, like they get to talk about what they do, and they're actually, like, MRI studies they've done of people when they are, when they are talking about themselves or their experiences to another person, like, the parts of the brain related to motivation and enjoyment light up way more than they do, than if you were, than you were listening to someone else talk or you're talking about something that isn't directly related to your own experience. So it's, like, it is enjoyable for people to, to be asked these questions. I think as you kind of, as we were sort of talking about a little bit with the what's and the why questions like, there's, there's a lot of, like, levels here, but you don't necessarily need to know all of those levels in order to get started. You just need to be, I think, kind of like you did, to just sort of being willing to take the jump, which, you know, I think the first time feels a little bit like a polar bear dip and jumping in a freezing cold ocean, and you're like, okay, here we go. And then the next time you're just like, sprinting towards the ocean and excited for it. Nicole Baldinu  18:48Have you ever been, this is just going sideways now, have you ever been stood up on one of these interviews? Michele Hansen  18:53Yeah.  Nicole Baldinu  18:54Okay. Lots, or just? Michele Hansen  18:56So I noticed that that, like, it used to happen a lot when I was a product manager working in a company. Um, and I think that so, but when I'm from recruiting as the founder, like, people tend to show up. Like, it seems like it's more important to them. Like, when I was working in a company, we had someone who was coordinating all of the interviews, and so we had never spoken to them before we got on the phone with them, even over email. And I think it's easier to blow off, like, an anonymous person, rather than the person they're going to talk to, nevermind somebody who has a title, whether that's Co-Founder, or like, I mean, sometimes we actually invented titles just for the purpose of interviews, like,  Nicole Baldinu  19:42That makes sense, though.  Michele Hansen  19:43Like, I think we had some, like, Head of Customer Experience, which wasn't even a title at the company. And actually, Cindy Alvarez in Lean Customer Development talks about doing this, too, that like, it's much easier to know show when, when you don't feel, like, an attachment to that person. Um, so I think these days, if someone doesn't show up, it's usually because like, something, like, something legitimately like came up. Nicole Baldinu  20:12Yeah, no, I totally feel that because it's literally been just one person. And I do feel like there would be something that, you know, because I do recognize that sometimes I feel like there's an element of not intimidation, but like, oh, wow, I'm actually getting to talk to the Co-Founder, so it is a bit more special for them. And I do feel the first part of the interview might be a little bit stiff, but, yeah, maybe a little bit stiff until we kind of, you know, until I think a big picture question really breaks down the, let's forget that, you know, we're just literally two people talking. And then I think they do forget the interview setting. But yeah, I'd say like, you know, just one out of how many I've done, and it's not that many. I've done 13, so one out of 13. That's not bad. You can do the math. I haven't got a calculator, what ratio percentage that is. But, uh, yeah. Yeah, I definitely think, and the flip side of that, too, is the, the recognition at the end, which I get to feel really kind of special or feel so, it's so rewarding for me when they'll turn around at the end and say, you know, this is so good that you're doing this. Like, they really appreciate that a company would actually listen, take the time to talk to their customers. And they, you know, I've had people wish me the greatest success, and you're gonna do a great job, and this is gonna be amazing. And it's just, and you can, and I feel, I like, I genuinely feel like they're being authentic, because they felt like I've listened to them. I've, you know, taken the time to, you know, give them an opportunity to share what they need, what their pain points are, you know, learn a little bit more about themselves. And then I do feel there's that reciprocation of, like, I wish you well, and no, I wish you well. It's kind of cheesy, but it's kind of sweet at the same time. Michele Hansen  22:17You know, I find that people who I do interviews with, even though it's really not intentional, like, they will offer to do a testimonial for us. They will offer to be a reference like, like, or I'll notice on Twitter, like six months later, like, they're the one who's like popping in on threads when, when people need what we do. Like, it really creates this, like, incredibly valuable connection. Nicole Baldinu  22:42Yeah. Do you have any, like, do you do any follow up? Like, what's the next step? Because literally, I'm at like, stage one right now, where it's like, doing the interviews. And I've just hardly just, you know, started the analysis, and I haven't gotten very far. And then I'm thinking, well, what's the next step after that? Is there some other sort of, invite them to a focus group with, you know, and like, what's, what have you done? Michele Hansen  23:08So I actually, I want, I'm going to come back to asking you about the analysis because I'm super interested to hear about that. Um, it depends really on what it is. So for example, if they like talked about something that, let's say that we ended up deciding in the future might be a new product, for example. Like, I might come back to them and be like, hey, you know, this thing we talked about, and it might have been, like, three years ago, like, we're exploring this now, like, can I talk to you specifically about this particular element again? Or maybe we have a prototype of something, asking them to run through it with us or, you know, if there was sort of something that was unclear, or we needed to follow up with them about. Um, but sometimes there is no follow up. Very often, actually, they will follow up with me and be like, hey, like, you know, like, you guys seem really open to feedback, and so we're, you know, we're working with this other piece of data, like, is there any chance you guys could support that or whatever? Like, they will come back to us very often. But there doesn't, you know, beyond a thank you note, really, there, there doesn't have to be, there can be as much follow up as you need, right? Like if you're doing something early, like it might make sense to, you know, to ask them hey, like, can I come back to you for further questions if our prototype or maybe to help us prioritize different things, like, to go back and do card sorting with them? It really kind of, like, it sounds like you're talking to people who have been customers for a long time. Do we actually talk about that targeting you did to decide who to talk to? Nicole Baldinu  24:40I didn't, I just ran, no, they might not be customers for a long time. But they definitely are users and have an, I would say that the ones who've replied are all you know, they've had, they've used the product for some time, but it could be as little as like a month. It doesn't, Michele Hansen  24:59Yeah.  Nicole Baldinu  25:00Not longer than that. And then yeah. Yeah, we've had, I've had some more longtime users, but generally it's, yeah, just people that, because the question was quite targeted and asked a very specific question when I did the call out, like, do you do this and this? I'd love to talk to you. Michele Hansen  25:19Oh, yeah. What was, what was the exact question? Nicole Baldinu  25:22The exact question was do you run live courses or live training?  Michele Hansen  25:27Oh.  Nicole Baldinu  25:28I want to talk to you. And then so, that was the, yeah, that's how I got them in. So I think that specific question helped as well. I want to know if it helped. Michele Hansen  25:45You picked that question because you said you're exploring an MVP of something, and also sort of potentially repositioning or sort of tweaking your positioning towards that specific market? Nicole Baldinu  26:00Yes, because its current usage, it's a current way that the customers are using, you know, WebinarNinja to deliver live training and live courses. So I wanted, I want to learn more about how they're using it, and where their pain points are, and, yeah, and what we could do better in that, in that kind of space. Michele Hansen  26:23It sounds like it was a question most people would answer yes to. Nicole Baldinu  26:27If they do it, yeah.  Michele Hansen  26:28Right. Yeah.  Nicole Baldinu  26:29But not all our users. So because I suppose you know, there's a lot of WebinarNinja users who are, you know, using webinar ninja for marketing. Michele Hansen  26:39Right.  Nicole Baldinu  26:40And they're not necessarily delivering training.  Michele Hansen  26:43Right. Yeah. So the analysis, before we talk about what you do after the analysis. Nicole Baldinu  26:51Oh, my God.  Michele Hansen  26:53Like, what are you doing? Like, like, what does this process look like for you right now, and it may not be sort of conceptualized as a process. Nicole Baldinu  27:04Okay. So so far, it involves printing out the transcript. Step one. Step two is reading it with a highlighter. And, and so I guess where I'm struggling, or where I kind of want to refine the analysis is, what am I looking, because I'm looking for a few things, I suppose. I'm looking for, you know, words that they say or things that they actually do, actions they perform, things that are concrete. Then there's also the oh, I wish something that they don't do, but it's kind of aspirational. So. you know, how much weight can you put on, on, on on those kinds of, you know, it's like, oh, we should do this. But it's like, what, have you ever done that? You know, would, how likely are you, they don't know. They wouldn't know, right? If it's something just like, you know. And then it's also, yeah, looking at it through the filter of like a marketing message. How would I then communicate to resonate with people who are doing the same thing so that I could, you know, attract the same type of people as customers? So there's kind of like, three buckets, I suppose. And so yeah, and then so there's the highlighting. And then it's, because of there's these, kind of, three kind of areas, and I'm just kind of have columns, and I'm just writing out, you know, things that fit under those columns. Michele Hansen  28:45Do you feel like you're getting out of that what you were hoping for? Nicole Baldinu  28:52Um, well, I have to say so far from just the interviews themselves, I feel like I've gotten a lot out of it. But I want to see, I, I'm not sure. Yeah, I don't know. This is a little bit like, I don't know, early stages. Michele Hansen  29:08Have you, have you tried diagramming the process for them, like, trying to sort of identify what, you know, what their big picture is, and then just all of the different pieces of that? Even if they're not, you know, sometimes we think of a process as like a bunch of linear steps, but sometimes it's also sort of an ecosystem of steps that kind of sometimes all sort of happen in a jumbly sort of order at the same time. And I'm curious if you've been able to sort of figure out what that looks like, for even, for each person. Nicole Baldinu  29:43No, but you're obviously saying that I would do that diagrammatic kind of visual for each one, right? And then later, look at all the similarities.  Michele Hansen  29:55Yeah. So some, I mean, if you're looking at people who are going through the same Sort of overall goal, then it would make sense to, to split out all of the different steps per person. And then to break them out by, did we talk about the different dimensions of problems? Like, the functional, social, emotional dimensions? Nicole Baldinu  30:16You, yes. But I was very, like, new to everything you were saying, so I was like, one process to everything. Michele Hansen  30:24That's okay. So, um, so I find this helpful, especially for, like, pulling out relevant parts that can be used for marketing or like, you know, sort of, wouldn't, like, quote them exactly, but like, the can inform like copy and whatnot. So there's a functional dimension to a problem, which is, you know, they, they want to run a sales training because they need their salespeople to sell more, or something. Like, so they need a tool that allows them to connect with their sales people remotely, for example. There's a social element, which is they are running this training, and there may be 10 people that they are training, and those 10 people have different levels of technology experience, and some of them have been with the company for a very long time, some of them are very new. Like, what are the different social factors going on, and how might they express that? Like, I want my team to feel like they're on the same page, like, for example, might come through and a quote, and then you say, so you hear that word team? And you're like, okay, well, what do they mean by team? Who exactly is on that team? Like, what, what is the story of all of how all these people came to be working together? And there might be an emotional perspective, as well, of like, how, how do they feel about the tool they used before? Was it frustrating for them? Did they feel like they were, you know, banging their head against the keyboard trying to get it to work, or to get their team members to install it? Or did they feel great when they get off of these trainings? Like, does this, do they find the tool, you know, easy to use? Like, and like, those are like, those also can come out in the quotes, too. And so what I find helpful is to kind of diagram the different steps, and they may be they may be linear steps, they may be, you know, concurrent, like, and then, and then, but for each one of those pieces of it, breaking out the functional, social, emotional components of it.  Nicole Baldinu  32:23Okay. Okay, yeah. Wow. This is so cool because there's just, there's so much to unpack in, you know, in one person's experience. And then I suppose, as you see the commonalities, I guess, that's when you, you know, across more people saying, if they're saying the same thing, I guess that's when you get validation, that's when you get, yeah, the understanding that this is affecting, this could be affecting more people. So I suppose I've gone, you know, the experience of actually talking to one person becomes very, like, it's just you and that person, and it becomes very much restricted to that world. And then you've got to step back and go, okay, I've got all these people now, they've said all these things. Now I've got to make sense of it. So it's just, I feel like I'm still, I'm enjoying the first stage so much. Like, and I feel like I've gotten a lot out of that first stage. But now it's like, okay, now this data is so valuable. What do I do with it? And I want to make sure that, yeah, it's unpacked. And then obviously, I know this information, I'm going to be unpacking it, but then I've got to communicate it to the rest of the team, as well, so putting it in a way that's like, you know, I can share it with Omar and the product team and now CTO. So there's just so many levels to it, but it's you know, it's all doable. It's exciting. Michele Hansen  33:59I think the more people you talk to, too, you're gonna start seeing those commonalities in in processes. So like, last episode, I was talking a little bit about activity-based design, which is basically the idea of going a step beyond human-centered design and thinking about the different processes that people are going through, and then you can start seeing the, the commonalities there. So for example, when I'm talking to someone, and it turns out that they're using us because they're doing, you know, US government Home Mortgage Lending compliance, like, their experiences of that are going to be very different than somebody who is you know, working with getting the timezone back from tractors that are in fields. And, but if I talk to somebody who's doing the compliance, like, generally like, like, as I when I hear that I'm like, okay, now I have a better idea of what this process is, from an overall perspective. How can I learn more about this person's, like, their company's specific functional elements, their specific social elements, like, their specific emotional pieces? Like, what do they think of the other options that they've tried compared to the other people I've heard and getting more and more depth each time. But there can be a huge breadth and, especially as I think you guys also are a horizontal SaaS, right? So you're, you're selling across many different industries, and, and I think this is where customer interviews are so fun, because I get to learn about so many industries and like, I'm like, I didn't even know that was a thing.  Nicole Baldinu  35:45I know, so varied.  Michele Hansen  35:48Versus, you know, someone who's selling horizontally, sorry, vertically within one industry, like they might not have that sent, you know, it might vary based on, you know, company size, or stage or whatnot. Um, I'm really curious, you mentioned bringing your team into it, which, you know, as a two-person team, we don't really do as much, but so like, how have you been able to bring other team members into this, or like, involve them in what you're learning?  Nicole Baldinu  36:16Well, so far, like, the first step I thought would be just okay, I'll put it, I'll make sure that I share the recording, the transcript, the details of the person I've used, you know, in like little folders on Basecamp. I've just basically organize it into little folders. And then as soon as I, you know, put up a new, a new interview, then I make sure that I share it with, so far right now, it's just me, oh my and our product, UX-UI designer, Maria, so I just share it, I say, hey, guys, there's a new interview. And I know they've been watching some of them. You know, I've highlighted a few that I thought, oh, this is super interesting. This person is definitely someone we'd go back to. So that's been just the extent of it so far. I feel like if I'm going to then, you know, share it, say, with our CTO, when it comes to more development time or, you know, when it starts to be a thing that's going to be fleshed out, or you know, if there's any development work, then I feel like there would have to be more, kind of, maybe a bit more of a traditional kind of a report where it's like, you know, X percent of people said this, or the majority are saying this, this is what, you know what I mean, it would have to kind of be backed up a little bit more by statistics. Michele Hansen  37:29I think they're, you know, I like to use qualitative and quantitative data together. And, you know, I, thinking back to when I was working in a bigger company, you know, we would say, like, for example, we see, you know, you know, 35% of users drop off on this page, and, you know, and then having a sort of data that like, this is important to the business for, you know, x millions of dollars reason, right? Like, if fewer people did that, then hello, money. And, but then we have like, quotes from people like, oh, well, it turns out that, like, they find this really difficult because that x, or they're looking for this other piece of information that isn't there, so they click the back button. And then here's a quote from someone that says, I really didn't know where to go, like, and then, and it's like, okay, so like, here's the picture, like, and now here, okay, great. Like, here's a project, like, here's something that a team can work on of, like, you know, the bounce rate from here is 35%. Like, let's get it lower because we have the, you know, we understand why people are doing that. We also understand why it's important to the business. Like, statistics, I find will not really come out of interviews, but interviews, explain why the statistics are what they are. Like, a spreadsheet of data will tell us what is happening, but it will never tell you why. Only people can tell you why, but you need both. Like it's, it's, I think there's sometimes people sort of think about, like, that you only use, you know, quantitative data, or, you know, I talk about interviewing and I think you only do interviewing, and it's like, no, like, porque no los does, like do it all together. Nicole Baldinu  39:10Porque no. Definitely los dos. Definitely. Well, yeah. It makes sense. And I think that's just, I think, why the process of actually, you know, literally doing a very manual printing out, highlighting actually gives you the opportunity to, to read because, you know, you're going to get one kind of experience when you're listening the first time and, you know, you're asking the follow up questions. But there's so much probably that's missed, even in on that call, until you actually go and read and, and highlight and just, yeah, analyze word for word, everything that was said. And there's a whole other layer there to unpack. Michele Hansen  39:15Yeah, I wouldn't, have you asked Maria, your UI-UX designer, to also read through them and do her own highlights?  Nicole Baldinu  39:42No, not yet. But that, is that something you, Michele Hansen  40:00That might be interesting. And, and there is research that says that when, like, multiple people are analyzing an interview, they pull out more of the problems. So the, the sort of like the paper on customer research was in the, is in the context of usability testing was called The Voice of the Customer. It's from 1993, or 1994, and they did all these different tests on how to pull out customer problems and analyze them. And they found that multiple people analyzing an interview tends to bring out many more of the user needs than just one person doing it.  That makes so much sense. Yeah. Because then, like, the way I'm thinking, obviously, I'm trying to do this as fast as possible, too, right? Let's get to like, analysis and presentation of like, here it is. This is what we need to do. I am trying to, like, speed that process up. But yeah, the risk there is that it's really then just my interpretation.  Nicole Baldinu  41:02Right. Michele Hansen  41:03Right. And some, they might just watch a video and, yeah, I remember that. But that deep level of analysis is, yeah, is going to be missed if we don't give that opportunity. So, yeah, that's a really good point. I mean, we did that, I believe, like, with the first user interviews. We gave those to our marketing teammate. So, that's how those were used, I feel. But I definitely think if it's, you know, we're starting, you know, if it's an MVP, then yeah, you're right, like someone else needs to go, I think this is actually the problem, or yeah, I agree, or no, I disagree. That's not the problem. And I think, you know, organizationally, giving somebody else the chance to discover something, too, like, they're not just being told what the learning is, but they have it, like, chance to discover it for themselves and maybe see something that somebody else missed. And one thing I love in Erica Hall's Just Enough Research is she talks about how powerful it is to bring other team members into the process because they're, you know, when we do interviews, and then bring them to other people and we're so excited about what we've learned, sometimes people can feel threatened or intimidated by that. Because all of a sudden, there's this new information coming in, and now it's on them to learn it rather than they didn't get to experience the joy of discovery themselves. And, Nicole Baldinu  42:29Oh, my God, you're blowing my mind. Sorry.  Michele Hansen  42:30And so it's more, like, if you can allow them to be in on the discovery process, whether that's as, you know, a silent listener on the call, or as part of analyzing the transcripts, or even, you know, collating transcripts, which is when you find, you know, let's say you find five common quotes, and then you're putting them all together have different commonalities. like they're part of the process, they're part of what's being learned, and they feel more invested and aligned with like, like, I just remember when, what like, when we, when I worked in a bigger company and we started bringing in the developers into just sitting in on usability testing, and not even asking questions or anything, just just listening, like, the level of team motivation and alignment, like skyrocketed because all of a sudden, everybody was learning. Nicole Baldinu  43:23So was, I just, yeah, I hear you. Like that, it makes so much sense, but I suppose it's one of those things that we just feel like, oh, we don't have time, you know, we got to move on. We got to keep, it's one of those things that does take time. But you're right, like, that excitement that I think is, like, this is so awesome. I'm having so much fun. This is so important. I'm learning so much. Just by sharing it, it literally is just my experience at that, at that point, unless somebody else gets to discover it for themselves now. Oh, man. How long, this whole process is gonna take three times as long. No, no, but it's good. It's good. It's so it's so valuable. But yeah. Michele Hansen  44:06And also the, in, the process doesn't have to ever stop. You know, it sounds like you're sort of in an intense phase right now, where you've been, I mean, when did you start doing the interviews?  Nicole Baldinu  44:20Oh, my gosh. Would have been like, not that long. Probably just like, three, four weeks ago.  Michele Hansen  44:29Okay. And you've done 13 in the past month, basically.  Nicole Baldinu  44:33Yeah, less.  Michele Hansen  44:34Yeah.  Nicole Baldinu  44:34Is that a lot? Michele Hansen  44:35That's, that's a lot. Like, that's a really good number, like, um, you know, I guess you are doing a specific like, project. So I mean, usually the, what I, like, the general guidance is to do five and then sort of stop and pause and analyze and see if you need to change your targeting. So, it sounds like you're consistently hearing different things from different people, so that warrants talking to more people. But also making research not just something that happens when you have a specific question, but just as a general sort of, I think, I tend to call it, like, maintenance research, like just sort of, on a general basis. But like, that's, that's really good, 13 in that amount of time. And so it makes sense that it would feel a little bit like, okay, now I have to analyze all of this, and this is going to be a lot of time and like, where am I going to find the time for this, in addition to everything else, but I think, I hope that eventually, you can find a place where you're just kind of doing like one or two a week, and maybe you're doing one and your UX person or a marketing person or somebody, a developer even, like, they're doing another interviews, and then you've got just like two a week, and then it's like, okay, like, what did we learn? Like, you know, does this does this match what we've heard in the past? How does it differ? Like, what new have we learned? Like, is there anything else we should kind of, you know, consider digging, digging on in the future? Nicole Baldinu  45:59Hmm. I love that. I wish, I mean, frankly, like, the five would have been helpful if you'd told me that last time. Five? No, I'm just kidding. Michele Hansen  46:12I mean, you also don't, you don't have to limit yourself to five, right? Like, it's just sort of, that's like, the kind of goal. And again, that's, that is also based on research, too, that you can surface in the context of usability studies, but like, surface 80% of customer needs with five interviews, but that assumes a pretty defined scope. And where you started with a broad scope, it makes sense that you would need more until you feel like you're starting to hear patterns. Nicole Baldinu  46:41Yeah. And I love what you said, like, that it definitely, and I'm so passionate, I think the more I do this, and the more, like, I talk about this, and geek out on this, and just love this whole process, the more I realize how much it should be a part of just regular in processes within a company, like,  Michele Hansen  46:57Amen. Nicole Baldinu  46:58Like you said. Yeah, I know, right? Like, I'm gonna spearhead the user research of the company. Well because it is, I mean, I don't know, like, like you said, we said at the beginning, it's like, it's one of those things, I think, as a company grows, you end up doing a lot more management, and, and that's great, because if you're working with great people, it's okay to you know, to do all those management duties. But this just becomes, you know, and then, you know, there's obviously always the putting out little fires here and there, whatever. But this, this has just been such a positive experience that I think, just really enjoyed it for that reason. So having this as an ongoing thing, I think is, would be great. Michele Hansen  47:44It sounds like you are I, I can just, I feel like I can see how inspired you are by doing, like, by how motivating it is. I am, I'm so excited to continue hearing about how all this goes. Um, and I feel like, I feel like I could talk to you about this all day because, like, talking to people about talking to people is my favorite topic. Like, like for my book, I interviewed 30 people because I just, it's just so much fun. But if other people want to stay in touch with you, what, what is the best way for them to do that? Nicole Baldinu  48:26Oh, like, to reach out? Just reach out, Nicole@WebinarNinja.com. There you go. You got my email. Michele Hansen  48:34And you're on Twitter, too, right?  Nicole Baldinu  48:36On Twitter. I'm on Instagram as well. You know, they can contact our support team and ask them to call me. Yeah, I'm in there. I'm in there every day. Michele Hansen  48:49Awesome. Nicole Baldinu  48:51Yeah.Thank you so much. This has been so much fun. Like, like, like you said, I could talk about this for days, days on end. Michele Hansen  48:59Alright, well, that's gonna wrap us up for this week. If you liked this week's episode, please leave us a review or tweet at Nicole and I. We would absolutely love to hear what has made you think about.

Show #785   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 22nd May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW ID RANGE ONLY THE BE SOLD ONLINE "Volkswagen has announced that 100% of its retail partners have agreed to a new Tesla-like online sales model in Germany for its upcoming electric vehicle line, which starts with the ID.3." says Joey for Teslarati: "customers could buy directly from Volkswagen straight from their computer or smartphone. Meanwhile, dealers will continue to remain involved in the sales process through modes of “personalized customer care and local services.” After ordering their Volkswagen ID electric vehicle through the company’s website, buyers will then choose a preferred dealer that will take care of any needs they may require throughout the life of their car, like inspections, maintenance, or service. Dealers technically assume the role of a traditional vehicle sales representative, Volkswagen said. “They look after acquisition, sales consultation, organizing test drives, transaction processing and vehicle handover in coordination with Volkswagen,” the company added. The inclusion of the new online mode of ordering a VW electric vehicle helps customers save money because the manufacturer assumes responsibility for vehicle financing, residual value risk, and inventory costs. Some of these fees are included when buying a car from a dealership, which can add hundreds of extra dollars simply because the dealership is storing the vehicle on the lot."   https://www.teslarati.com/volkswagen-id3-tesla-inspired-online-sales-model/   SVOLT UNVEILED ITS NEW COBALT-FREE BATTERY CELL "In an online presentation SVOLT gave us more information about its NMx cobalt-free battery cell that’ll arrive next year. This long cobalt-free battery cell from SVOLT is specially made to be used in battery packs assembled with the CTP (cell-to-pack) technology. With the CTP technology instead of having battery cells inside modules, then modules inside battery packs, we remove modules altogether. We end up with long prismatic battery cells connected in series that are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as it can be." Says PushEVs: "This high-voltage battery cell has a nominal voltage around 4,7 V and can be charged at 5 V, which makes possible to assemble simpler battery packs with fewer cells. Only 80 cells in series are needed to reach 400 V, or 160 cells in series to reach 800 V."   In the comments, from Dr Max Holland: "The SVolt presentation made good points around need to minimize cobalt, which industry insiders are already well aware of. However, high grade Nickel also needs to ramp up mineral supply volume in the coming 5 years, and sometimes sees disruptive price spikes. Arguably only LFP is truly free from these kinds of mineral supply constraints, but the overall industry will benefit from having wide variety of chemistries / pathways, and some degree of substitutability between minerals, so that no one mineral can become a bottleneck/pain point. I empathize with SVolt – seeing Tesla, CATL, and BYD getting a large share of the battery headlines recently. If SVolt also have an efficient zero-cobalt approach, and innovative CTP designs, that’s good, and I can understand they want to announce it. They are also emphasizing greater thermal stability, which is sometimes a headlining topic in the China NEV market."   https://pushevs.com/2020/05/21/svolt-unveiled-its-new-cobalt-free-battery-cell/   KIA DESIGN BOSS HINTS AT AN ELECTRIC VERSION OF THE STINGER "We return to the much-scrutinized Kia Stinger, the critically acclaimed but slow-selling performance sedan whose future is the subject of intense speculation. Thanks to an interview in Top Gear with the head of Kia design, Karim Habib, we now have not only official confirmation that the four-door fastback is getting a mid-cycle refresh, but also some hints about how the model might stick around by evolving." Reports Autoblog: "In the interview, Habib said he hopes that the “spirit of the Stinger” remains as the Kia brand evolves. “As the technology goes toward EVs and as the world and its appetite for these types of cars changes, the concept probably has to evolve as well,” he said."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/21/kia-stinger-electric-car-hinted/   WORK HAS BEGUN AT MIRAFIORI ON THE FCA-ENGIE EPS VEHICLE-TO-GRID PILOT PROJECT The COVID-19 outbreak has not put a stop to the cooperation between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and ENGIE Eps (Paris:EPS), nor to their commitment to support the deployment of electric mobility.  Since the announcement with Terna in September of the intention to jointly experiment with interactions between electric cars and the power grid, based on a “smart” charging infrastructure, FCA has selected ENGIE Eps as the technology partner for the project, to build that infrastructure.  Work has therefore begun at the FCA plant in Mirafiori, Turin on the first phase of the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) pilot project. Once fully completed, it will be the largest plant of its kind in the world.   https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200520005296/en/Work-Begun-Mirafiori-FCA-ENGIE-EPS-Vehicle-to-grid-Pilot   TESLA CHINA VP: GIGAFACTORY 3 ON TRACK FOR 4,000 CAR PER WEEK IN JUNE "China-based Xinhua News Agency interviewed Tao Lin, Vice President of Tesla China Foreign Affairs. The interview was posted on Xinhuanet in Chinese. We translated it via Google. Lin told reporters that the factory in China is recovering well after the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the situation went so smoothly that Tesla is using it as a model for reopening its U.S. factory in Fremont, CA." According to InsideEVs: "With the first phase of factory construction complete and operational, manufacturing capacity at the plant is estimated at about 150,000 units per year. However, Lin says, in the next few weeks – by June – Model 3 production will hit a target of 4,000 units per week."   https://insideevs.com/news/424555/tesla-china-4000-week-june-model-y-soon/   TESLA’S MODEL 3 INCLUDES V2G CAPABILITY…OR DOES IT? "In a recent filing with the Texas electric utility commission, Tesla seemed to relegate V2G to the list of future projects, implying that EV adoption had not yet reached the necessary scale, and that vehicle owners might not buy in to the technology.      However, Tesla does have a history of building in future-oriented hardware features, and keeping mum about them until it’s ready to implement them. So it sounded plausible when Electrek reported that an electrical engineer had discovered an unannounced bidirectional charging capability in Model 3" reports Charles for Charged EVs: "Phil Sadow (aka Ingineerix), challenged Gaxiola’s conclusions in a video. “I don’t believe that’s the case,” says Sadow. He has identified some components on the circuit board in question as diodes, which of course allow current to flow only in one direction. Electric Revs has spoken with Gaxiola, who now admits that he may have been mistaken."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/are-teslas-models-3-and-y-already-capable-of-bidirectional-charging/   TESLA MODEL 3 LOSES ITS GLASS ROOF IN CONVERTIBLE CONVERSION YOU CAN BUY "Newport Convertible Engineering has the Tesla Model 3 convertible conversion for you." Says Autoblog: " takes the company about 2-3 months to complete the conversion. NCE strips the interior, restructures, reinforces and cuts the body, adds the convertible structure and then finally tests it for water leakage. The basic conversion with a manual-folding top is $29,500, according to information obtained by Motor Trend. If you want a power top, it’ll be $39,500. We've since confirmed both figures. From the looks of it, NCE removes the roof, but keeps the B-pillars in place, connecting them with a roll hoop of sorts."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/21/tesla-model-3-convertible-conversion/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? The School of Rock = The School of Hard Knocks in Western Australia & Quebec in recent weeks. The circumstances at Altura and Nemaska are meaningfully different, but nevertheless a great reminder that mining or brining of any type is hard. A Cost Over Run is No Fun, especially if timed when Mr. Market sentiment is looking glass half empty, and a project has substantial covenant-heavy debt. I Feel Good Altura is a reflection of their "in production" status, relatively uncomplicated SC6 business model, modest working capital need and substantial insider support. Nemaska's USD 280M hole is more complicated, but unlike the Dead Flowers Valentines sentiment expressed by many, there is still a Glass Half Bull prize in battery hydroxide from high grade hard rock in one of world's best sovereign jurisdictions proximate to the very large North America Auto OEM and battery market. Will off-take partner LG Chem step up Gangnam Style? And/or will those holding NMX's 900 m shares be inhaling Softbank Vapors and Turning Japanese? Will other Lithium producers step in? Rodney and I also discuss Livent’s Q4 results, SC6 pricing and the impact on Mineral Resources, Altura, Pilbara and Alliance Minerals. We welcome good news from bellwether Albermarle in Chile and attempt to read the China tea leaves with softer GDP growth amid tight credit, trade and EV subsidy uncertainty & increased local lithium production. From 2009: I love a good tradeshow. There’s something about all the people with common interests, gathered together in one location, eating overpriced, stale concessions while trading information and experiences, attending educational seminars, gossiping about their industry… That’s why I’m hoping that come October 2009, I’ll be one of the thousands in Las Vegas attending BlogWorld & New Media Expo.

In today's Q&A, we are helping Jessica figure out how to find events that will help her as an entrepreneur and her business. Let us know where we should host our live event next! Do you have a question you want answered on our podcast? We would love to help you! Click here to ask your question! Resources Mentioned in this Episode Our last live event we held NMX Social Media Marketing World Podcast Movement Let's dive into this week's question! JOCELYN: Hey y'all. You're listening to Q and A with S and J. SHANE: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us each week as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. JOCELYN: Hey guys, welcome to today's Q and A mini podcast. Today's question is from Jessica. And just a reminder if you would like to include your full name and your domain name we will be glad to read it on the air. If you would rather remain your first name that's totally cool too. SHANE: We also link in our show notes to anyone who writes in. So it's a great way a link from our website back to yours so you can maybe drive some traffic, so we really highly recommend if you want your staff shared to put it in the notes because if we don't have it we can't share it and we love to share all that stuff for you guys and I hope you get some links out there. JOCELYN: Alright, her question is how do you find out about the small live events that you mentioned on your podcast? SHANE: Alright, that's a great question because Jocelyn and I have talked often about how we vastly prefer small intimate live events. Maybe you can say less than 50 people then we go to the big huge events like NMX or our social media marketing where our podcast movement. We don't mind those. We think there is value in those. We don't really like to go to those to see the speakers as much because a lot of that stuff that they talk about in the big, big events is very superficial, top beginner—not like beginner's stuff but it's just like they don't really give away anything in their talks. It's more for networking and meeting people and seeing friends but the small events where you're sitting at a table with people, masterminding with people where you get to go up to the expert who is hosting the event and actually talk to them and ask them question about their online business that's what really going to take you to the next level. The main way that we find out about those probably is we really keep up with the internet marketing industry. We keep an eye out. We search for live events online. We don't really listen to a lot of podcast regularly. We might catch one or two a week. We randomly sample different people's podcast while we are at the gym or something like that. But we keep an ear to the ground, ear to the railroad so to speak to hear about little live events when we catch one or we see 10 to 20 people and it's about a skill that we like, what kind of research, who is hosting it and we'll go and jump on that event. So you kind of got to keep up on what's going on in the internet marketing world. You don't want to be listening to 20 podcast and taking up all your time because you're not going to take any action but when you do hear about a good small live event, maybe 20 to 50 people. Those are great ones to jump onto and also you have got to actively seek them out. Go to Google and search for, if you want to learn how to record YouTube videos better, go type in learn YouTube videos live or something like that and see if you can find an expert that is actually hosting one of those events. JOCELYN: Yeah a lot of ways that we find out about live events, we follow people on Twitter. We get a lot of Facebook and Twitter ads that are targeted to people who like internet marketing related things which we do.

What Is Holding You Back? – PTC Episode 089   At New Media Expo 2015, I met many podcasters that were weeks and months away from launching.   "I'm 30 days away from launching.”   "I'm about 90 days from going live with my podcast.”   "I'm still conducting interviews preparing for my launch this summer.”   What is holding you back?   I know what you feel. I was in your shoes when launching my podcast. Planning. Learning. Researching. Trying to get it just right.   Don't let perfection keep you from launching.   We often let procrastination creep into our lives disguised as “planning” and “researching”. We tell ourselves we will launch right after we complete a few more steps on our “to do” list.   Here is the problem: The “to do” list keeps growing preventing us from launching.   When I was launching, I started with a blog. The blog grew slowly. I finally came to the realization that podcasters would rather listen to podcasts than read.   My podcast planning began.   I started watching videos on podcasting. Podcasts about podcasting filled my iPhone. Newsletter subscriptions hit my e-mail inbox. The NMX virtual ticket was my next purchase. I even bought books about podcasting. I consumed everything I could find.   I kept telling myself I was preparing. Truth is, I was just procrastinating.   Months into my learning and planning stage, Dave Jackson from School of Podcasting reached out. Dave found my blog and wondered why I didn't have a podcast.   Dave, don't you understand? I'm planning. I'm researching. I'm learning. Look at all the work I'm doing.   Dave wasn't buying it. He had seen this movie before and knew how it ended.   During that 90 minute phone call, Dave pushed me. He challenged me. Dave had confidence that I could launch in a week or two. I simply needed to move.   That was the trick.   Start with the first step.   You've heard it before. Every journey begins with the first step.   Your first step may not be in the right direction. However, you make corrections as you go. Eventually, you reach your destination.   People often ask me how I can stand and speak in front of 15,000 people. I started with the first step.   Speaking in front of 20 people in speech class was tough enough.   To earn extra money in college, I began working as a wedding DJ. That job forced me to make announcements to groups of people every weekend.   One weekend it hit me.   People simply are not as interested in my speaking success and failure as I am.   If I mess us while speaking, there is a good chance I will be the only one to remember. People don't care that much.   The same is true with your podcast. If you mess it up, few will notice let alone care.   Dave Jackson always uses a quote from Ryan Parker from FoodCraftsmen.com. “Nobody will punch you in the face.”   Are you letting self doubt keep you from launching? Is the Impostor Syndrome holding you back?   "Why would anyone care what I have to say?”   "What if I fail?”   "What if I make a fool of myself?”   All of the self doubt is natural.   We tend to make more of our mistakes than anyone else.   Don't let the fears hold you back. Find someone to push you and hold you accountable.   We could surely work together where I can help that happen. You could also just find a friend that will push you to launch. Either way, push yourself to make it happen.   Now is the time to launch. Not 90 days from now. Not 30 days from now. Not after you have 8 episodes in the can.   Launch now.   Record an episode and get it out. Set some deadlines and take some baby steps.   Let's make it happen. Pick a date and launch.     I would love to help you with your podcast. E-mail me any time at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com.   You can find my podcast and other tools to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com.     Let's turn your information into engaging entertainment.

Top 12 Takeaways From NMX – Episode 087   Before we jump in this week, can I ask a quick favor? If you have never subscribed to the Podcast Talent Coach Podcast, can you please take two minutes to do so and leave a review? It will help us get exposed to new podcasters and grow our community. Thanks a million. CLICK HERE.   New Media Expo 2015 wrapped up in Las Vegas last week. What an amazing event.   As Director of the Podcasting Track at NMX, Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting put together an amazing line up of talent.   Though the sessions were packed full of great information, the relationships created at these events make it more than just a learning opportunity. I had the chance to connect with great people I have known for a bit. Here are just a few:   Dave Jackson – School of Podcasting Rem Lavictoire – Sci-Fi Movie Podcast Daniel J. Lewis – The Audacity To Podcast Bill Conrad – New Media Gold   I also had the chance to meet a few new people and connect with those I have only known over e-mail. Here are a few of those great people:   Rob Walch – Libsyn Rob Greenlee – Spreaker Nick Seuberling – Inside The Jungle Corey Fineran – Ivy Envy Pat Flynn – Smart Passive Income Seth Resler – SethResler.com   There were many others that I met and created valuable conversations. New Media Expo is such an incredible event for our podcasting community.   After I attend a conference like this, usually on the flight home, I like to review my notes to find the big points I can put to use as soon as I arrive home. This week, I would like to share with you my top 12 takeaways from NMX.   This list isn't nearly exhaustive of the things I learned. Some are not even new, but great reminders. We dig into each one in this episode.   1. Schedule it, so it gets done.   2. If advertising is driving people away from traditional media, why are so many podcasters so anxious to add commercials to their show?   3. From Mignon Fogarty: E-mail newsletter is the #1 way to reach your audience. Make sure it has a personal tone.   4. From Chris Ducker: There seems to be a lack of originality in the online business space. Stop being lazy and come up with your own (stuff).   5. From Rob Walch: iOS usage crushes android devices 6:1 in download ratio. (In this episode, we also discuss a few tips for iTunes search he provided.)   6. From Lou Mongello: Don't forget the importance of face-to-face contact and communication.   7. From Mark Ramsey: Beginnings matter. Radio listeners always come in somewhere in the middle. Podcast listeners always come in at the beginning.   8. From Pat Flynn: I'd rather live a life full of oh wells, than a life full of what ifs.   9. From Dave Jackson: When you wonder why anyone would ever listen to you, remember that you are special (neat). Then, embrace your uniqueness, and understand the bar isn't set very high.   10. From Daniel J. Lewis: The description in iTunes does not help SEO, but does help the PERSON. Make your episode titles appealing, as if they are your portfolio.   11. From David Hooper: People aren't paying you to podcast. They are paying you to help solve their problems.   12. From Cliff Ravenscraft: When growing your audience/community, connect to your existing audience and make the experience great for them. Get word of mouth to spread.   Thanks for spending another week with me. I truly appreciate your time.   I also want to thank Joshua and Mercy for the amazing feedback regarding the last episode about your “why”. Many of you sent feedback, which I greatly appreciate. I had wonderful exchanges with Joshua and Mercy that helped me create a great plan.   Thanks for all you do for me.   If you have never subscribed to the Podcast Talent Coach podcast, please spend two minutes to do so. What Is Your Why? - Episode 086

What Is Your Why? - Episode 086   What is your “why”? Why do you do what you do?   WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS I've been doing a lot of work on my business over the past few weeks. In “The E-Myth Revisited”, author Michael Gerber talks about moving your business forward by spending more time working on your business rather than in it.   That is exactly what I've been doing lately. Am I going down the right path?   I thought you and I could review my progress with the hope that it will help you with your process.   We all face the little voice inside our head telling us we are not good enough. Whether we have been doing this for six months or six years, we all need a little confidence boost every now and then. It is only natural.   I will be speaking at New Media Expo in a week. (Last week to save $100 HERE.) My review of my business was inspired by NMX. I want to be sure things are in place to make the most of the opportunity.   As I have stepped back to look at the big picture, I have been reviewing a few great books like “The E-Myth Revisited”.   START WITH WHY Another book that has helped my review is “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. The book is focused on the theory that people do not buy what you do. They buy why you do it. Turn your customers into fans by making them believe in your mission and purpose.   Have I sufficiently defined my why? I thought I had. Even after refining it a few times, I am not quite sure.   Podcast Talent Coach is just over 18 months old as a podcast. From the limited feedback I have received from you, I am not quite sure my “why” is clear enough to truly inspire you to create great work.   Podcast Talent Coach was launched to help podcasters gain more confidence in their content. When you open the mic, I want you to truly believe that your voice matters. I want to arm you with the confidence you need to beat back the butterflies and excuses in order to create powerful content episode after episode.   With the information I provide every week, you should be able to take your information and turn it into entertainment that is engaging for your audience and unique to you.   MY STORY I have been in radio for 25 years. I have been coaching radio talent for 20 of those years. As I listened to podcasts, I realized so many podcasts could improve with a few tips I have learned and used over those two-and-a-half decades.   The coaching experience I have gained could easily be used to help podcasters create amazing content that could replace other entertainment sources if I could only reach those podcasters.   Eighteen months in, I have only connected with a handful of podcasters interested in making that amazing entertainment a reality.   As I step back and examine the progress, I come up with four possible explanations.   ALREADY GETTING IT One reason could be you get all you need from this podcast and the free worksheets I offer. You don't feel one-on-one coaching is necessary.   If this was the reason, I would see more downloads of both.   SPREAD THE WORD Another explanation could be I haven't done a good job spreading the word about the show.   When I launched, the show got a solid start. I hit a few hundred downloads quickly. Things slowed down quite a bit after that. A few hundred downloads is about average and nothing to sneeze at. I am grateful for each person that joins me every week.   Thank you for being here.   As I continue to produce content for you each week, I am not seeing further growth. That concerns me.   PROBLEM SOLVING A third reason I may not be seeing continued growth could be the market. Maybe I have not done a good job creating a solution to a problem my audience knows they have.   This is a likely reason. Most podcasters who have the confidence and ego to open the mic and create content every week believe they are good enough the way they are. They may not realize that there are steps they could take to create more powerful content.   It is also possible the problem I am trying to solve does not exist. As I help radio broadcasters improve their shows, many of them fear the critique, then love the feedback and growth after the fact.   THE "WHY" The final reason may be my “why”. It is very possible that I have not sold my “why” well enough.   I have defined what I do quite a bit. But have I really defined why I do it for you? Maybe not.   My love for great radio and creative podcasts drive me to do this show every week. I love being able to create great audio that people look forward to every week.   More importantly, I love sharing my knowledge of that process with others. You can create amazing visual images in the theater of the mind to inspire your listener with your podcasts. Inspire them in such a way that they cannot wait for the next episode.   That incredible anticipation of future episodes is what makes this medium so wonderful. Holding the attention of a listener to the point where they cannot get enough of you is an amazing feeling.   FIND THE GOOD Dave Jackson and I do a show together called “The Podcast Review Show”. Each episode, we invite a podcaster on the show to have his or her podcast reviewed by the two of us. It takes a great deal of confidence to have two coaches review your show right in front of you.   Every guest is a little nervous coming on the show. They are not quite sure what we will say. They fear we are going to tear their podcast apart and affirm their belief that they are not good enough.   During the show, Dave and I look for areas of the episode that are really good. Our goal is to help podcasters do more of the good. In turn, that will replace the stuff that isn't as strong. In the end, the podcast gets better.   Every guest fears coming on the show, but truly appreciates the actionable feedback at the end of the process.   JUMP THE HURDLE Here lies my problem with Podcast Talent Coach. It is not easy to get you over the fear of being critiqued in order to get you the joy of the improvement. That fear at the front door is a pretty big barrier. It is very similar to the fear of getting in the roller coaster line in order to enjoy the exhilaration when you finally get off of the ride.   The anticipation and fear could be preventing Podcast Talent Coach from growing.   Then again, I am not sure what is holding me back. Maybe it is a bit of all four. My gut tells me it is probably the lack of communicating my “why”.   WHAT IS YOUR WHY? Have you communicated your “why” well enough? Have you inspired your fan with the reason you create your content every week?   I haven't come up with the answer to my problem quite yet. I'll continue working on my business until I find the solution.   I would love your input. As a frequent listener to Podcast Talent Coach, what do you hear? What brings you back every week? What has prevented you from getting more involved with coaching?   E-mail me anytime you would like at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. Let me know what you think. How can I better help you?   Thanks for being here. I truly value your attention every week. You mean the world to me. I will help you any way I can.

6 Ways To Land Big Interview Guests - Episode 080

6 Ways To Score The Big Interview - Episode 080   Many podcasters conduct interviews as part of their show. If you fit that category, and you are like most of us, you probably struggle to convince those top shelf names to make an appearance on your show.   What is the trick? How do you land that big guest for your podcast?   Let's face it. Asking a busy, successful entrepreneur to give up an hour of their time to give you an interview is a tough ask. Their time is money. How can your podcast be more valuable than their other options?   Here are six useful tips to help land those big names.     FIND THE INTRODUCTION Find people that know your prospect. See if they will introduce you.   Just the other day, a radio colleague came to me seeking an interview with Taylor Swift. I have interviewed her a couple times. He knew I was able to make an introduction for him.   Use the same process to help yourself.   THE GATEKEEPER'S FRIEND There are times when big names have people that run their schedule. This could be a personal assistant. It might be a booking agent. You need to make friends with these people.   In the music business, I always go through the record label. I need to create a strong relationship with that person in order to be at the top of the list when interview opportunities come about.     WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? To score a guest interview for your podcast, you need to begin by explaining how the interview will benefit your prospective guest. The fact that your audience will love it has no bearing. It really doesn't matter to your guest if your show or your audience will benefit from the guest's appearance.   When your guest makes the decision whether to appear on your show, they will only consider how the appearance will benefit them personally.   We were able to help a very sick young girl meet Taylor Swift … from her hospital bed.   Lolo was a young 11-year-old girl. Her wish was to see Taylor Swift in concert. She was getting tickets for Christmas. However, when Taylor came to town, Lolo was in the hospital fighting for her life. She was in Children's Hospital fighting leukemia.   I passed along Lolo's wish to Taylor's record label. It wasn't only the story that got Taylor. I know she loves giving back in very special ways. The Taylor Swift tour was coming through town for two days. I knew there would be some down time the day of the second show.   I made it as easy as possible for Taylor to make Lolo's dreams come true. That is exactly what happened. You can see the story HERE.   What is in it for your guest? Make it easy.     SHOW THEM WHAT YOU'VE GOT Provide your prospects some examples of your great work. If you have endorsements, share those as well.     SIZE ISN'T THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS Many podcast hosts use their audience size to lure guests. If you have a reasonable audience size, surely use it to your advantage. However, don't stop there. You may be overlooking many other ways you could benefit your guest.   You could offer to give your guest exposure on your website. You may have visitors to your site that do not listen to the show. Promote your guest on the site with a link to their content. This will be an additional benefit.   Mention your guest and interview in your blog. Again, your guest will be reaching additional audience. You are helping them spread their message beyond your podcast.   Offer to promote the interview and your guest's information to your mailing list. You may have many people that receive your newsletter who may never listen to your podcast. By including a link to your guests website in your mailing, your guest will reach additional people. Take credit for that.   Your audience for any one of these avenues may be small. However, when you combine the benefit of each distribution method, your proposal for the interview will be more appealing to your guest. Use every audience you have to your advantage.     DON'T TRIP OVER THE NAMES YOU DROP Play to your guest's ego by dropping a few names. If you have had other notable guests on your show in the past, let your guest know. Tell your prospective guest they will be among good company. They will feel more comfortable saying yes to your request.     If you conduct interviews as part of your podcast, use these six steps to land the bigger names. It will not happen overnight. However, consistent fishing with this better bait will surely land you some larger fish.     I'm speaking at NMX 2015. Get Noticed In The Sea Of Sameness – Episode 062   Being unique is the only way you can make your podcast get noticed in the sea of sameness.  There are so many podcasts in your niche.  Being memorable is critical. There is one file in your listener's mind that you occupy. You can't occupy multiple files. You must pick one. Define that file and do all you can to support that image. That is the essence of your brand. Where does McDonald's fit in your brain file? McDonald's is probably the “Fast Hamburgers” file? Does it also fill the “Milkshake File”? Probably not. Sure, they serve milkshakes. However, that file is probably occupied by your favorite ice cream shop. Where would Cheetos fit in your brain file? It would go in the “Lip Balm” file, right? Of course not. However, Frito-Lay launched Cheetos Lip Balm in 2005. It failed miserably, because Cheetos occupies the “Cheesy Puffed Snack” file in your brain. Your podcast brand can only occupy one file. Pick the one image your brand can own? Define your brand. When we create, we expose our perspective. We open ourselves to criticism. It is natural to want your thoughts, views, art and creation to be accepted by everyone. To avoid being disappointed, we often play it safe. Our creativity lacks creativity. It is risky to be truly creative. However, that is really the only way to get noticed. Safe blends in. Risky stands out. To create engaging content with your podcast, you need to be unique. Your first idea will rarely be a truly unique idea. That first idea will usually be something you have done or seen done in the past. Keep working the idea. Let it lead to other, more creative ideas. The more often you let your mind explore other options, the more often you will develop truly unique ideas. Don't settle. Always attempt to create something unique with your content. Do not settle for your first idea. Push yourself. Brainstorm. Let one idea lead to the next until you have a long list of ideas. Then, select the best idea from the bunch. You will usually find the best and most unique idea further down the list. If you settle for your first idea, you content will become stale. You will continue to use ideas that have been used in the past. There will be nothing to engage your audience. The unexpected creates amusement, delight and a memorable event. Being direct assumes your listener cares about your marketing message. They don't. You need to be unique to be memorable. Be distinct, unusual, and unexpected.   Congratulations to Dave Jackson over at the School of Podcasting. Dave was recently named the new Director of Podcasting for New Media Expo. NMX will be held April 13-16, 2015 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It will also be held in conjunction with the NAB Show. NMX is always a great event and should be even better with Dave at the helm. I'm very excited about the show. Dave and I do a show together called the “Podcast Review Show”. Rem's back from Podcast Movement in Dallas! As you'll see from the title, this isn't a standard episode of the The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast.  This is a quick audio guide talking about the valuable tricks and tips I've gathered by traveling to the national Podcast Movement Conference in Dallas Texas. This episode is really for my fellow podcasters to help them get the most from a conference, which will help them to make better content.  But if you travel regularly, you might find some value here too. Feel free to skip this episode if you're looking for a Sci-Fi Movie review. This Friday, we'll release one of our special Patreon After Show Podcasts. Much of this will be applicable to other conferences, but I'll use the examples I picked up at Podcast Movement 2014 and New Media Expo 2014.   Before The Trip Book early! Get your flights, hotel and PM stuff done Stay in the same hotel as the event, it's worth the extra money Flight tracker Apps (Plane Finder and Flight Aware) Google cards Download the App that the conference sets up Phone Charger Anker Astro E5 15000Ma Digital Audio Recorder? Better to have it and not need it Room and ride share? Subscribe to the Wednesday Webinars (Podcast Movement) Write down your flight info, Itinerary, hotel address and other stuff on a notebook in case you lose network or cellular connectivity or your device packs it in. Bring your own pillows Perfect your elevator pitch Record an extra podcast episode and have it ready to release.  If you typically release on the day you'll be at Podcast Movement, set it to auto publish.  Remember, just because you're away at a conference to make your podcast better, your listener is still expecting your great content.  In Podcasting, consistency is very important. Check to see when friends are arriving/leaving and try to find ways to ride share Try an Uber! Buy the virtual pass.  You won't be able to see all the sessions you want to, so take the stress off trying to make the right decision. Chap stick, Subscribe to the Social media feeds of the event, you might get news about added speakers, changes in the program and discounts Plastic silverware – bring some Get a good should bag for your water bottle, snacks, notebook pens, digital recorder, mints, mouthwash, deodorant, pepper spray (Joking!) Does the hotel have quick checkout? Travel Tips Direct flights are preferred If using connectors (especially from other countries) try to get a bit longer layover time.  Going through security checks can be very time consuming and you might miss a connector. Try to bring carry on luggage if possible.  If you like me, and bringing pillows, you'll have to check your luggage, but it's worth it. Check ahead to see which airline charges for checked luggage.  A little research could save you upward of a hundred bucks round trip. For out of the U.S., exchanged your currency for American before you leave.  This will give you time to find the best exchange rates. For out of the U.S., explore options for data roaming plans for your phone.  There are several options,   During The Conference Drop off some business cards at the Libsyn booth Carry a small water bottle, most hotels will give you one free (Flask) and refill it at the end or start of a session.  They'll have water at all the sessions. Eat! You're going to be busy and rushing around, but remember to keep yourself fed and energized.  Throw some protein bars or nuts in your bag. Get some quiet time.  I'm an introvert typically, and these events, though fun can be really draining, and quiet time helps me get centered and rested.  That can really help your immune system and can mean the difference between getting sick or not Carry Purell hand sanitizer (but don't use it just after shaking someone's hand!) Tweet and Facebook the sessions you're going to (Dave Jackson Picture) and help to promote the speakers your seeing.  They'll appreciate it. If you're having a great conversation in the Hallway, you can skip a session. Get enough sleep!  Sure, we want to get as much from PM as possible, but we're still human and we need our rest.  Getting your rest means you'll be happier, more alert, and you'll make a better impression with your fellow podcasters. Use the event Hashtag for the event in your Tweets and Facebook posts.  Others at the conference will see them and they'll find your extracirricular activities and you'll find theirs. (#PM14) Make notes of areas where the organizers can improve the conference for next year Talk to local people and get the suggestions (going to try Babe's Chicken next time) Do you recon of the area, look for coffee shops and restaurants that you can invite others to later on. When you see people with conference name tags, introduce yourself, invite the to join you.  These are your people! Break the ice with weird Canadian currency! Try to connect with people you want to meet ahead of time and plan an evening or breakfast event.  I personally love breakfast gatherings before the panels start (Try Event brite or even a good old fashioned email) This is how I met Jason Griffin and Darrell Darnell, they both hosted meetups and I met about 15-20 new friends through just those events alone.) Plan some events, but keep ready for the unexpected. (House of Blues, Dealey Plaza) Ask questions at sessions! Great way to promote your podcast! Keep open to people who might be a guest on your show (Evo Terra) Mints and mouthwash Strike up conversation (3 seconds- Pat Flynn talked to Jordan Harbinger – http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/charisma-course-winning-in-person-encounters/) Pace yourself! There's a lot to do, a lot to see, plenty of people to meet, but remember to look after yourself (PM15 was better for me because I remembered to drink water, eat protein and a good meal, get enough sleep, take my Vitamin D)  Keep your healthy habits when you travel. Business Cards Print business cards (Share them when asked offer when appropriate) Receive them with respect, do just ignore it and stuff it in you pocket (Japanese) After the events of the day are done, and you're in your hotel room, go through the cards you've received and make notes on them so you'll remember them.  Where did you meet them? What did they look like? What elements of the conversation do you want to remember or follow up on? Ideally, you want to say, ‘Oh, that's the card for Nick Freeman, I met him in the elevator and introduced him to some other Podcasters and now he's thinking about doing a podcast. You won't form connections with everyone, and even if you know you won't be connecting with that person in the future, be nice, accept their card, be gracious. We can have pleasant and genuine interactions with people we know we'll never see again. That's just being nice. Keep eye contact and pay attention to the person you're talking to, don't give them half your attention and scan the room for people you really want to talk to.   After The Conference When you're traveling, wear your Podcast T-Shirt! Whether it's the one you get from Libsyn or Podcast Movement or Podcaster's Paradise, you might recognize a fellow attendee you haven't met before.  That's how I met Darcy at the Modern Business Guru Podcast (modernbusiness.guru) and now I'm listening to his show! When you're at the airport, on the bus or when you get home, make notes about the conference and make a list of suggestions to help improve next years event.  Go through your business cards, add people to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ if they're people you want to keep in touch with. Do a blog post or short Podcast about the events you attended, the people you met, give them a plug on your podcast, give out their website or Podcast. Go back and listen to the Plug fest I did on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast after NMX at http://sci-fimoviepodcast.com/sci-fi-movie-podcast-contact/ and go to the 56:45 mark. Remember to do this after you've added your new friends, so they'll be alerted to your post conference post or podcast, and they'll likely enjoy that you mentioned them! Connect with the people you met and keep the connection going.  You won't become friends with everyone, but take the time and make the effort to keep in touch with people you click with.  Now, you're starting the process of building friendships and relationships.     Sci Fi Movie Podcast 50 tips Rem learned at Podcast Movement 2014

Stephen King. He is the Charles Dickens of this century. People either love him or hate him. My churchgoing friends are often shocked to learn that I read his work, and admire it. In today's show I share some business lessons I have learned from King. Also on today's episode… Are you a Madman? Or a Madwoman? Copywriters wanted. And the always award-winning, much much more. Announcements: I am updating my copywriting course… I will announce our winners next week. Next week's show will be about what could be the most important topic I have ever covered. Don't miss it. Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: NMX, Jan 4-6, 2014, Las Vegas, NV Strategic Influence Jan 14-16, 2014, Phoenix, AZ NAMS 11 February 7-9, 2014, Atlanta, GA Social Media Marketing World, March 26-28, 2014, San Diego, CA Tip Of The Week – Again! Digital Photography School. A great site for all things photo. Spiritual Foundations 1 John 4:18: "perfect love casts out fear.". Have you ever been told by someone that you should have more of the "fear of the Lord"? The implication is that your Christian walk cannot be correct unless you're constantly afraid that God is going to "whack you" when you screw up. It's true, The Bible talks about the "fear of the Lord". Let's take a look at what it actually says. As believers who live under the new covenant, and followers of Jesus, we should let Jesus himself define what the "fear of the Lord" actually is. When the devil tempted Jesus in the desert, and asked Jesus to worship him, Jesus says, "it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God…". You'll find that in Matthew 4:10. If you have a modern Bible with cross references, you'll notice that Jesus is actually quoting from the Old Testament. He's quoting his favorite book of the Bible (the book he quoted most often), and the passage he's pointing to is Deuteronomy 6:13. That passage says, "you shall fear the Lord your God and serve him. But wait a minute! That's not what Jesus said… He said you shall WORSHIP the Lord your God. What's going on here? While there are plenty of theologians who will argue with me, it seems clear that Jesus is explaining what the passage in Deuteronomy actually means. To fear God is to worship him. I trust the theology of Jesus more than I trust any other earthly theologian. He has interpreted the "fear of the Lord" for me, and that settles the matter. One last point worth noting: every single time the disciples were afraid of Jesus, he said the same thing. "Fear not." Seven Lessons From Stephen King Stephen King is a writing and marketing machine, having accomplished the unusual feat of being successful as a craftsman, and as an entrepreneur. He has sold well over 350 million books, and spawned countless movies and television shows. His latest novel-to-screen adaptation is Under The Dome. How? I have written extensively elsewhere about writing for the purpose of strategic influence. I can point to no better model of how to do this right than King. There are seven key lessons you can learn from Stephen King, and the way he conducts his business (the business of writing). And for those of you who are offended by my saying "the business of writing"… perhaps if you thought about your writing as a business, you wouldn't be so easily offended. Food for thought. Learn your craft. Whether his subject matter is always to your taste or not, you would have to be willfully ignorant to declare Stephen King anything other than a master of the art of writing stories. He has honed his craft to a fine edge, and without this particular weapon in his arsenal, the rest of what you're about to read would not be possible. You must master the craft. Be prolific. King has stated that he writes every day, including his birthday and Christmas day. He has since admitted that this might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. His ethic of working every day is plainly demonstrated by his amazing output. You don't publish 50 novels, five nonfiction works, and over 200 short stories by goofing off. you do it by applying liberal amounts of fingers to keyboard. Be real. One reason people are often uncomfortable with King's writing is that he tends to bring heavy doses of reality into his stories. I'm not talking about the vampires, giant spiders, and ghosts, of course. I'm talking about the sometimes embarrassing, sometimes offensive, sometimes infuriatingly irrational ways that people talk and behave. King unabashedly presents people as they really are. And this makes his detractors uncomfortable… And his fans love him. Have a personality. When King began his career, he decided to be exactly who he is. I have no way of knowing this, but I'm pretty certain this was a conscious decision made in the full knowledge that it might backfire financially. He could have been more "respectable" by writing that vaguely named thing called "literary fiction", but instead he chose to write what fascinated him. Be fearless. Stephen King has never shied away from the potential criticism he might get from atheists, believers, Democrats, Republicans, or the League of Decency. He's written some ugly scenes, and seems that many writers would have shied away from because they didn't want to be associated with that material. For better or worse, that fearlessness has catapulted him from the mass of mediocrity to the pinnacle of literary success. Try new things. King was one of the first to take advantage of the digital publishing medium. He was one of the first to publish a novel in serial form online. He has branched out into music, comic books, and of course films and television. Some of his experiments have fallen flat. Others have been a meteoric success, both critically and financially (remember Stand by Me and The Green Mile?) Do many things simultaneously. One of the ways King manages to stay so prolific is that he is doing many things simultaneously. He's always working on a new book or story, and usually has more than one project cooking in the background (a movie, a TV series, and audiobook, or the radio stations that he owns in Maine). While you may or may not ever be his equal on the bestseller lists (he has a pretty strong head start on most of us), you definitely can learn from the career and methodologies of Stephen King. Question: what have you learned about writing, or the business of writing, from Stephen King… Or any other modern writers? Share below… What To Do Now If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. This helps new people discover the podcast. In the podcast, I give my answers to these questions. Feature Segment: What Worked (and What Didn't) In 2013 I share my most successful… and also my LEAST successful business moves in 2013. Here's where they'll mean to you and your success in 2014… What worked: This podcast. High leverage, high engagement, premium content delivery vehicle. Facebook. Believe it or not, this was my number one source of traffic in 2013. Premium pricing. Over 80% of the revenue we generated came from the most expensive 5% of services and products we offer. What didn't work: Busyness. Over committing led to me making a few poor tactical decisions, and was a severe drain on my mental focus, emotional well-being, and physical health. Complexity. Complexity is the mother frustration, and the father of fatigue. Rugged individualism. It's an American ideal. It's romantic. It feels heroic. The only problem is, it doesn't work. Spiritual Foundations Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything." Proverbs 11:24 In a recent discussion, a couple of my friends brought up the fact that selling things to the Christian market is not a good idea. Christians, they said, are cheap. One brought up a statistic they heard from a retail bookstore owner, who said the number one category of books that are stolen our Christian books. Three questions: Is this true? If it's not true, why is it so widely believed? Either way, what should we do about it? In the podcast, I give my answers to these questions. Feature Segment: 10 Ways to Create More Content The cornerstone of your online business is the creation of great content. But that creation is not always easy, especially if you have a goal of producing a lot of content consistently. Here are 10 ways to produce more content, more consistently, and more easily. Especially when your ideas are running dry. See a movie. This can result in posts like "The Hobbit's Guide to Online Marketing" or even "What Ironman Can Teach You about List Building". Tell a personal story. Make a list of the most exciting, shocking, or embarrassing stories that have happened to you. This list should give you the starting point for many a blog post. Be the interviewer. Pick the people you would most like to learn from, and set up interviews with them. Write a review. You can review a book, a training program, a seminar, software… Anything applicable to your audience. The more detail, the better. Publish a how to. We love tutorials, especially the granular, step-by-step kind. Ask your audience. Just ask what they would most like to hear from you about. Other great ways to phrase the question include: what's your biggest problem? What's holding you back? What your number one question? Curate some content. Simply collect and share links of your 10 favorite blog posts on subject X. Variations: "The 10 Best Posts On…", "Four Distinctly Different Views About…", "Seven Approaches To…" Case studies. They can be your clients, or they can be other companies. Talk about what they're doing right, why you think it's right, and summarize some takeaways. Opposite day. Make a list of your most popular posts, and ask yourself, "what if I took the opposite view on this?" Guest posts. Solicit for guest posts on your blog. Just make sure what they write will be interesting to your audience. But if they come from your audience, they most assuredly will be. What if you could influence people before you even met them? Would that be a valuable skill in business? Not only is it possible, you can engineer it with intention. And you should. In today's episode, you'll discover: The difference between strategic and tactical influence, and when to use each. The three key factors we need whenever we feel we've heard a special calling from God. My very favorite photography app. And the always award-winning, much much more. Announcements: I am updating my copywriting course… win free access with your comments between now and Christmas. Seats available for Strategic & Tactical Influence (STI) — dates January 14-16 in Phoenix, AZ. Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: NMX, Jan 4-6, 2014, Las Vegas, NV Strategic Influence Jan 14-16, 2014, Phoenix, AZ NAMS 11 February 7-9, 2014, Atlanta, GA Social Media Marketing World, March 26-28, 2014, San Diego, CA "Permission to Prosper" April 8-10, 2014, Spokane, WA Tip Of The Week I've recently taken up photography as a hobby. My current cameras are my iPhone 5S, the Canon A1400, and an old Nikon DSLR that I'm borrowing from my son. My dream kit is a Sony NEX-7. But one thing I've learned is long before you need a new camera, you need better skill with the camera you have, and you need some finesse and how you process your photos after you take them. Which leads me to the fact that I own many, many photography apps. But the one that consistently produces the best results for me is snapseed. Even though it gets a lot of complaints, it seems fairly easy to use to me, and I have produced some pretty nice photos using. Above are three examples. Spiritual Foundations The key to taking a word from God in bringing it into manifestation usually lies at the intersection of three circles: Spirit, Soul, and Strategy. The reason people are often disappointed when "God's word" doesn't come true for them might be because they've missed one of these three. Feature Segment: The Unconventional Guide to Influence What is influence? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary: "the power to change or affect someone or something : the power to cause changes without directly forcing them to happen." When you have strategically crafted your influence in a particular sphere, you can affect change without direct communication. Change the atmosphere around people, and you change the atmosphere inside people. Get clarity on what outcomes you seek to achieve. Reverse engineer the required influence to produce the outcome. Discover who you have to become in order to exert such influence. Codify your wisdom in a way to is easy to distribute to other people; the most powerful way is to write a book. Practice and enhance your communication skills so that you are able to transmit your message in an effective, powerful, and memorable way. Become skilled in the science of causing your ideas to spread; in common parlance, we call this "marketing". Develop an intentional process that causes others to want what you have; transform your ideas into cash. What To Do Now The development of the seven steps has both a Strategic and a Tactical component. At our three-day workshop in January, not coincidentally entitled Strategic and Tactical Influence we develop both of those components, and we work through all seven steps in the system, producing a distilled, Big-League Idea born out of your knowledge wisdom and experience… Developing this into a full-fledged outline for your Big-League Book (and even finishing the book, if you choose to opt for the upgrade)… Developing your talking points for media interviews, etc.… And devising a customized, intentional cash flow funnel for transmuting your ideas into income. The investment for this workshop is not cheap, but for the right person this is the bargain of the decade. We have a handful of seats left; if you would like to reserve one, if you are serious and you want to know more, click here to fill out an application. Spiritual Foundations All spiritual growth involves discomfort. It is abnormal for a believer not to have an appetite for the impossible. When we are born again and open the Bible and start reading about Jesus, we all want to do the things that Jesus does. Unfortunately many of us fall prey to disappointment or bad teaching and that appetite goes. This desire that was birthed in us at conversion gets buried by disappointment, by things which didn't happen as we thought they should have, or teaching that said it wasn't supposed to be like that. And yet we don't have the luxury, we don't have the right, to lower the standard of scripture to our level of experience. The responsibility of every believer is to look at what is possible and then in the secret place with God contend until there is breakthrough, until we manifest the very things that Jesus said should be manifested in our lives. That is the privilege of a believer." Bill Johnson, Manifesto For a Normal Christian life Feature Segment: 7 Steps To Your Best Year so Far This is the perfect time to be planning your new year. What if there was a way to cut through the fluff, the chaos, confusion, and just flat out fix your business? Well, there is. By the time were done, you will have discovered: Why you do stuff you don't want to do, and don't do stuff you do want to do. How to stop that. How to use your laptop's power cable to increase your productivity. The key to releasing power into the lives of others. And of course, five specific ways discipline will make you rich. Announcements: Answer the reader's poll, and be blessed in return. I am updating my copywriting course… stay tuned for more details coming soon. In the podcast audio, I reveal this arcane secret… Spiritual Foundations If what you are saying does not impart grace to the people listening, it's better to be silent. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give cgrace to those who hear." Ephesians 4:29 We can do terrible damage with what we say, or we can bring life. Speak only life, and watch what happens. Feature Segment: 5 Ways Discipline Will Make You Rich Wikipedia says "Discipline is a course of actions leading to a greater goal than the satisfaction of the immediate. A disciplined person is one that has established a goal and is willing to achieve that goal at the expense of his or her immediate comfort." Add this book to your list of must-reads: The Ultimate Sales Machine, by Chet Holmes. If you haven't read it, move it to the top of your list. If you have read it and haven't yet implemented every single strategy inside its covers, read it now. Again. Probably my favorite passage from Chet's masterful business work is one that most people read without understanding its import. In the early pages of the book, Chet points out that most people will read his book, agree with its precepts, and still not do them. He says this is the "reverse psychology" section of the book, in which he attempts to prod the reader into doing what needs to be done. In Chet's words, "I'm goading you into applying a powerful force for creating success from what you're going to learn… and that force, my friends, is pigheaded discipline and determination." Pigheaded discipline is the subject of this post for very good, and simple, reason. That reason being the fact that this is the most-lacked skill in over 90% of entrepreneurs. In my experience, what stands in our way, what holds us back from our potential, is usually not some external force (such as competition or marketplace conditions)-it is, rather, our own inability to say no to the things that distract us from our most profitable activities, and our continued inability to say yes only to those activities that produce the results we seek. It is as if the world conspires against us to lead us down this path to destruction. Most of our peers, and certainly most of our employees, are happy to tell us what we should be spending our time on-and almost without fail their advice is dead wrong. It usually doesn't come packaged as advice, by the way – it usually comes packaged as a meeting… a phone call… a personal plea… or some kind of interpersonal conflict. None of which are, perhaps, designed to take us off target- but all of which inevitably do. Guard your heart carefully, eternal entrepreneur, and focus only on the things that expand the kingdom. Employ pigheaded discipline. There are at least five ways cultivating more discipline will make you rich: Discipline measures activity instead of intent. Discipline measures results instead of reasons. Discipline cultivates stewardship. Discipline produces accurate thinking. Discipline practices the Pareto principle. What To Do Now Here's how you put these five points to work right now, starting today. Reverse engineer the daily activities needed to achieve your objectives, schedule them, and then do them. Meticulously track the results you achieve, and continuously adjust your approach until you reach your objective. Carefully examine your finances, your relationships, your health, your spiritual foundations. If there are any areas where you are not being a good steward, you already know what to do. Do it. Today. Evaluate every area of discontent in your life, determine the cause, and decide what is required to fix it. See things as they are, then see them as you want them to be, then make them how you see them. Ruthlessly eliminate activities and relationships that do not move you forward toward your objectives. Begin today, by making a list of at least 10 things to eliminate from your life. If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 Rest does not equal in activity. It means that we are able to be active without fear, doubt, or emotional striving. We become peace inside chaos, we are the call my at the center of the storm. Feature Segment: What I Learned From The Platform Conference Nearly every significant turning point in my life has been marked by attending a conference. which is not to say that every conference I have attended was a life changer; but even at the "poorly produced" conferences, I always learn something of value. This week, I had a life-changing experience at the single best business conference I have ever had the privilege of attending, the Platform Conference in Dallas, Texas. How does this affect you? As always, I seek to learn everything I can and then bring it back here to share with you. While not every one of the ideas I'm going to share is necessarily be applicable to you, I believe many of them will. Here are some (not all) of the most valuable things I learned at this year's platform conference. The absolute imperative of building your own platform. "Platform" is a metaphor for the stage you construct from which you share your ideas, insights, and advice. As Michael Hyatt says in his book Platform, building a platform is how you "get noticed in a noisy world". I write frequently about creating strategic influence; which means to exert influence in the lives of people who have never even met you. The mechanism by which you do this is your platform. Although I have long been a proponent of platform building, after this week's conference I am absolutely convinced it is of paramount importance for anyone who has something important to say, or something useful to sell. The dynamic tension between excellence and procrastination. Michael Hyatt started us off with a powerful presentation that reiterated the five-part framework of his book. (Incidentally, for all my students and coaching clients, that book is required reading.) Michael teaches that we must start every project by "baking in WOW". The key to creating the "wow" experience for our readers and customers is to exceed their expectations. I came home with a long list of things I need to do to bake more "wow" into everything we do at my company. The other side of the coin is, it's easy to use this commitment to excellence as an excuse to never get anything off the ground. Seth Godin makes it clear it's important that we "ship"-that we get a project out the door and into the hands of our audience or tribe. Perfectionism is the mother of procrastination." -Michael Hyatt Ken Davis offered a startling perspective on creating "WOW". Ken is a best-selling author, frequent radio and television guest, and one of the country's most sought-after inspirational and motivational speakers, Ken's premise is that WOW is "found at the intersection of pretty, practical and personal." He shared compelling examples of this from real-life advertising and marketing campaigns. Apple Computer is, of course, the primary example of a company doing this right. Think about it. Every product they introduce has all three of those elements. Yesterday I got my new iPhone 5s. I assure you that it is very pretty, it is extraordinarily practical, and my password is actually my thumb print: you can't get more personal than that. Also, implicit in Ken's brilliant instruction was the importance of being interesting and entertaining. This is something Ken teaches at his SCORRE conference, which I plan to attend next May. Jeff Goins, who writes a frustratingly beautiful blog at GoinsWriter.com (frustrating only because he makes writing brilliantly look incredibly easy), inspired us with his session. I took many notes from Jeff's talk, which was about starting from scratch and building a platform with words, passion and people. My big take away from Jeff's talk was this: the key to succeeding at platform building is not about "who you know", it's about who you can help. This includes not only helping other influential speakers, authors, and bloggers… More importantly, it's about the tribe of readers you help. Focusing on that will eventually bring you the attention your message merits. As I stopped chasing attention, more people began paying attention to what I had to say." -Jeff Goins Cliff Ravenscraft, the founder of the podcast mastermind, has produced over 3100 podcast episodes. He has helped thousands of people and organizations launch successful podcasts. While Michael Hyatt inspired me to start my podcast, Cliff provided me with the practical knowledge, tools, and advice that have allowed me to succeed as a podcaster. Cliff made it clear in his talk that the opportunities and benefits of podcasting can dramatically shift your success as a platform builder. While I am obviously a proponent of podcasting, it was only after watching clips presentation that I realized what an incredibly powerful "secret weapon" podcasting is for building your platform there is no other way to build such an incredibly intimate connection with people. And at this point in time, competition is very thin in podcasting. While I knew in principle this was true, I don't pay much attention to my chart rankings in iTunes. But while listening to Cliff speak, I checked and discovered my own podcast ranks in the top 25 in the world for business and marketing advice on iTunes! Thanks Cliff, for the reminder. Lysa Terkeurst, The New York Times best-selling author and president of Proverbs 31 ministries, knocked me off my feet with her presentation. Lysa is a bona fide celebrity, and yet she is the most humble and approachable person you'll ever meet. I'm a bit of word nerd, so when Lysa started sharing her copywriting techniques for writing value propositions, I swooned. She was inspiring, smart, and entertaining. She was also incredibly generous and although she shared. Amy Porterfield is a friend I only met in the "real world" just this week. Amy and I first met a few years ago, when she was still working for Tony Robbins. She was actually the person in Tony's organization who hired me to write copy for Tony. Since leaving his organization, Amy has built an amazing business, created one of the most successful podcasts on the subject of marketing (click here for the Online Marketing Made Easy podcast), and authored a book called Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies. Amy gave a stunning presentation on her Facebook advertising secrets. I promise you I'm already at work implementing her ideas for my own business. But, that's not the most valuable thing I learned from my friend Amy. I watched her while an audience full of seasoned business professionals was held captive by her stark and transparent admission of how overwork had almost wrecked her life… and how setting a new standard has given her freedom, satisfaction, and even more success. When you worship at the altar of "hustle" you say yes to everything because it never feels like you're doing enough." -Amy Porterfield Amy Porterfield, you did in fact change my life this week. I hereby renounce my worship of the idol called "hustle". Derek Halpern is the creator of the well-known blog Social Triggers. Derek is a brilliant business thinker, and approaches marketing with the attitude of a scientist. He dives deep into scientific research and finds ways to apply it to social media, blogging, and online marketing. He has influenced the marketing approach of thousands of business people, and host one of the top marketing podcast on iTunes. He also dresses like a boss. Derek may have been the most prepared presenter I've ever encountered (well, other than Michael Hyatt!) I was most impacted by a simple statement from Derrick: "Don't sell often, but when you do, so hard." By "selling hard", Derek does not mean to be and of noxious pushy salesperson… he carefully studies the desires of his marketplace, and tailors every nuance of his marketing and selling specifically to the people who need what he has to offer. Powerful stuff. Stu McLaren is the co-founder of WishList member, the membership site solution for WordPress that now powers over 43,000 online communities. Stu is of course a great friend of mine, and we are perfectly aligned when it comes to the moral rightness of prospering in business. I took more notes during Stu's presentation than anyone else's, but without a doubt the single most powerful thing he had to say (at least in my opinion) was this: "The more money you make, the more impact you can have." Amen, Stu McLaren. Michele Cushatt was the MC of the conference, and her bright and cheerful personality said just the right tone for the entire event. But that was only the precursor to what had to be one of the most powerful talks I have ever heard. There was a moment in her speech that had the entire room in total silence, except for an occasional sniffle… because she also had managed to bring tears to the eyes of most of the attendees. Those tears were not generated by some trite emotional device, but by a powerful moment in which she revealed the truth about why many of us struggle with achieving our full potential. I hesitate to say more, because when you get the chance to hear Michele speak (and you will, because her star is rising), I don't want to spoil this special moment for you. Suffice it to say, Michele, if you are reading this… I have promised myself to dive deep into life. Thank you, my new friend, for how you contributed to my experience of life. 3 Powerful Takeaways From The Conference Itself. I know I've already shared quite a few insights, but it's only a fraction of what I took away from the conference this week. When I zoom out another level, I also learned some valuable lessons from the overall conference experience. And for this learning, I have to give credit to Michael Hyatt, Ken Davis, and their amazing team, who crafted a framework that allowed this event to have such impact. Here are three of the many learnings I gleaned from the overall conference experience. WOW is in the details. Michael and Ken pay close attention to every detail of this conference, from the choice of venue (it was beautiful and comfortable), to the way the rooms were set up, to the number of people staffing the event making sure things were happening happening smoothly, to all the printed materials that accompany the event. Every element was high quality, with attention being paid to design and the experience that the attendees had. In fact, from beginning to end, this can conference embodied the intersection of pretty, practical, and personal. For me, the Platform Conference raised the bar on how these things ought to be done, and you will see the results at my upcoming Permission to Prosper event in Spokane next year. Community multiplies the benefits of training. It was not lost on me that connecting people to one another was carefully engineered into the entire conference structure. There was a networking reception the night before any of the conference activities began, there was ample space between sessions for people to connect the network. We took many meals together, there are few things more powerful than breaking bread with other people to connect and bond you to one another. Is it more expensive for the promoter to provide such opportunities? Undoubtedly. Does it provide a deeper more fulfilling experience for attendees? Absolutely. Devotion to your participants is primary in importance. I have never been asked to do more as a speaker at a conference that this one. And I have never been more delighted with my conference experience than at this one. I attended every session, I was present at every networking meal, and made myself available every waking hour to meet with attendees. It was tiring, hard work… but it was so rewarding. I'm sure that sounds noble, but I have to be honest, I feel the person most rewarded was me. I met so many brilliant, loving, powerful, and remarkable people. My life will be forever changed by those I encountered and had the privilege of getting to know. I'm absolutely convinced I made several new lifelong friends at this event. The environment that fostered these kinds of relationships (not just for me, but for everyone who attended) was intentionally produced by Michael and Ken, and will be incorporated into any future events that I myself produce. What To Do Now How can you benefit from my notes? Pick three of my takeaways and use them. Decide exactly how you're going to incorporate them into your business, and then schedule it on your calendar. I look forward to hearing the results you produce.
