Some Thrift Savings Plan participants are taking advantage of a new option for Roth in-plan conversions. The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board reports that roughly 30,000 TSP participants have converted some of their contributions since the feature launched earlier this year. I went to Vṛndāvana for Puruṣottama-māsa. It was right after 9/11 and the plane was empty; there were only a couple of people on there. When we landed in Delhi, it was really hot because it was 2001—imagine that. It was very hot because it was still September when I got there. Everybody wanted to know about what was going to happen to America, what was going to happen to the world, because of that attack. But once I got into Vṛndāvana, there were so many millions of people coming there. I've never seen Vṛndāvana more crowded. I was staying at Govardhana, and people were coming for Govardhana-parikramā 24 hours a day. There was not a lull. In fact, on at least one night, I waited to see if the crowd abated at any time. I was with Mādhava Mahārāja, my godbrother; we stayed at Rādhā-kuṇḍa that night at Bhakti Svarūpa Dāmodara Mahārāja's ashram, and we'd wake up—each of us, every hour—to look out of the bars on the ashram window to see if the crowds going around had slowed down. And they never did for the whole month. People came from all over India to come to Vṛndāvana during that time. I completely forgot about the world and what was happening in America. It was a time in which people were just so absorbed in taking advantage of the mercy of the Lord that they had no other care in the world. So, all of us can take advantage at any time, but this is the great excuse we have: that we're offered a time in which we can fully absorb ourselves. We have to keep taking advantage of every opportunity to go deeper, because it's the ultimate goal of life. When we have these time periods in which the śāstras say there's extra, then we should use it as an excuse to go deeper into our own practice and see what it feels like to have no other concern in the world except for remembering Kṛṣṇa, chanting Kṛṣṇa's names, and distributing them to other people. Summer is not that far off, and for many families, the kids are already dreaming about vacation. But parents may be asking a different question: How can we make great family memories without breaking the budget? A family vacation can be a wonderful gift, but it doesn't have to create financial pressure that follows you home. With a little planning, creativity, and communication, you can enjoy meaningful time together while staying within your means. Crystal Paine, creator of MoneySavingMom.com, joined us on today's show to share practical ways families can plan a memorable, budget-friendly vacation. Start Planning Early The first step is to plan ahead. The earlier you begin, the more options you'll have for lodging, travel, and activities. Crystal recommends considering destinations that are a little off the beaten path. These places often have fewer crowds and lower prices while still offering plenty of opportunities for rest and fun. If you're flying, she suggests using Google Flights to search flexible destinations. You can enter your travel dates and explore lower-cost flight options across the country. Just as important, set a clear budget for the entire trip before you go. Decide what matters most to your family. Maybe staying near the beach is a priority, but eating out every meal is not. Knowing those priorities ahead of time helps you spend intentionally rather than react in the moment. Take Advantage of Free Activities Some of the best vacation memories don't cost anything. Crystal encourages families to search for free things to do in their destination. Try looking up phrases like “best free things to do” along with the name of the city or area you'll be visiting. You may find hiking trails, local parks, self-guided walking tours, free museums, art exhibits, festivals, or concerts. These activities are often overlooked, but they can become the hidden gems of a trip. And they remind us that meaningful experiences don't always require a high price tag. Get the Whole Family Involved A vacation is more enjoyable when everyone feels included. Ask your children what they would enjoy doing. You may not be able to do everything, but letting each person choose one activity can help the trip reflect the whole family's interests. Crystal also suggests giving each family member a set budget and allowing them to plan a few hours of the vacation within that amount. This can be a fun way to teach kids practical money skills. They learn how much things cost, how to make tradeoffs, and how to enjoy the responsibility of planning. Be Strategic About Meals Food can quickly become one of the most expensive parts of a trip, especially if you eat out for every meal. One way to save is to stay somewhere that offers free breakfast. Then, bring snacks or simple meal items from home. If you're flying and can't pack much food, visit a grocery store when you arrive. A loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly, fruit, carrots, chips, or sandwich supplies can cost far less than several restaurant meals. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy a special meal out. Part of a vacation can be the fun of eating at a memorable place. The key is to be strategic. Choose the meals you want to splurge on, and save on the rest. Set a Daily Spending Limit Before the trip begins, decide how much you can spend each day. Then, make it a family challenge to stay under that amount. This can turn budgeting into a game rather than a burden. It helps children think carefully about purchases and gives everyone a shared goal. Instead of saying yes to everything in the moment, your family can work together to decide what is truly worth the cost. Come Home With Memories, Not Debt The best vacation is not the one with the biggest price tag. It's the one that gives your family time together, creates lasting memories, and allows you to come home without financial regret. A budget-friendly vacation doesn't mean settling for less. It means choosing what matters most, planning wisely, and remembering that joy is not found in how much we spend, but in the people we share life with. Doug Sosnik — the veteran Democratic strategist, former Clinton White House political director, and one of the sharpest big-picture thinkers in American politics — joins the Chuck Toddcast for a sweeping conversation about where the country is headed and whether either party is prepared to meet the moment. Sosnik argues that every election cycle has a defining event that sets the political weather, and for 2026 it's unambiguously the Iran war — but with early voting expanding the calendar, the window for Republicans to fix their problems is razor thin. He breaks the American electorate into three buckets and notes that the critical 15% of swing voters who tend to align culturally with Trump have now turned against him, that the Republican brand actually outperforms both the Democratic brand and the MAGA brand in polling, and that the Democratic brand stubbornly refuses to improve despite Trump's failures — meaning the 2028 nominee, not the party label, will determine who wins. They identify a potential 60% majority that's fed up with the system itself, arguing that America has moved away from meritocracy toward family wealth in ways that demand creating a new ladder to middle-class life for non-college voters, and delivers a blunt generational verdict: real change won't happen until the boomers exit the stage, and 2028 will be like 1960 — the election that defines post-Trump America. The conversation turns to the future of both parties, and Sosnik's analysis is bracingly unsentimental. He notes that more Republicans now identify with the GOP brand than with MAGA, that Vance lacks the charisma to inherit Trump's movement, and that the Trump family has been testing Don Jr.'s name in polling. They warn that the country doesn't want to vote Republican in 2028 but lacks confidence in Democrats, and point to the UK where both major parties are in danger of being replaced by insurgent movements. He closes with a candid assessment of the 2028 Democratic field — the weakest since 2004, with Rahm Emmanuel as the only candidate putting out real policy.The winner in 2028, Sosnik predicts, will be on the side of breaking things rather than defending the status quo, because the animating force in American politics on both the left and the right is now unmistakably populist. Moving troops is the hardest part of a Yātrā because this world is called Durgā, which means durga-gati—difficult to go. Vṛndāvana adds an extra challenge because roads and infrastructure, in general, are the same as they ever were, but the number of cars and people has increased exponentially over time due to Śrīla Prabhupāda introducing Vṛndāvana to the world. So, we just have to be patient.
