Former Florida State President John Thrasher argues that the exclusion of the Seminoles from the College Football Playoff highlights the necessity for the school to depart from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He contends that the CFP committee yielded to pressure from ESPN and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) when unveiling the four playoff teams, leaving undefeated ACC Champion FSU (13-0) on the sidelines in favor of unbeatens Michigan and Washington, along with one-loss teams Texas and Alabama. The controversial omission of the Seminoles has reverberated across college football, casting doubt on the integrity of the system and the hierarchical structure of Power Five Conferences. Thrasher sees this as an opportunity for FSU's leadership to explore alternative affiliations, emphasizing a perception of the ACC as a secondary-level conference. Last August, FSU hinted at the possibility of leaving the ACC unless there were changes to revenue distribution. The ACC's expansion to 18 members in September, including Stanford, Cal, and SMU, further fueled concerns. Thrasher, who retired from FSU in 2021 after nearly seven years as president, underscores the influence that ESPN and the SEC wield in the realm of college football. Welcome to a special episode of the podcast. I am joined by Brad Geiger and Neil Langland, and we discuss CU's decision to rejoin the Big 12. We address the criticisms of the move, including leaving the AAU-rich “better fit” of the Pac-12 for the “Truck stop conference” of the Big 12, and CU's audacity to make the move before the Pac-12 media contracts were announced. We then respond to the pundits, including Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, who have taken their shots at the Buffs as they abandon the ship which is the floundering S.S. Pac-Whatever.We then, armed with at least an outline of what the Pac-12 media contracts will look like going forward, take a look at the future of the two conferences. Did Colorado make the right move, choosing the stability of the Big 12 media deals over what appears to be the Pac-12's streaming-centric deal with Apple-Plus? Will the Buffs' move incite a stampede of realignment? How will the CU programs – including its basketball teams – fare in the newly configured Big 12?Let's find out …

Before college football became all about Power Five Conferences, football on the East Coast was some of the most competitive and led by several Hall of Fame coaches. While it may seem complicated to believe today, there was a time when Syracuse versus Penn State was for bragging rights in the Eastern part of the country. My college coach, Ben Schwartzwalder, battled Nittany Lion coaches Rip Engle and Joe Paterno during his long coaching career in some epic battles. Before arriving on the Syracuse campus, Franco Harris was on the campus of Penn State, making plays for Paterno and the Nittany Lions. Because of the old NCAA rules when first-year students didn't play, I'd seen Harris make plays and would compete against his Nittany Lions squad my sophomore year, which was his senior year. This was the start of a longtime rivalry between our teams. Harris would become a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1972 NFL Draft, and a few years later, Paul Brown and the Cincinnati Bengals drafted me in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft. For my ten seasons with the Bengals, we played the Steelers 20 times, with the Bengals earning eight wins against a Steelers squad that would win four Super Bowls, with many Steelers feeling Franco was the glue to their success. After the 1983 season, the Steelers felt Franco had seen his better days and allowed him to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, where he ended his career in 1984.  I left the Bengals after the 1983 season, where I would play two years in the USFL for the New Jersey Generals before ending my playing career. Shortly after, started a career in broadcasting as a color analyst with the Bengals in 1986. While Franco Harris was a longtime rival, he was also a great man off the field who touched many by giving his time and energy for the betterment of all.  Harris was more than just part of one of the greatest plays in NFL history, the "Immaculate Reception," and I wanted to take time on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to pay tribute to one of football's all-time greats, Franco Harris.

Payne's size, athleticism, and quickness speak for itself, but just how high is his ceiling when he arrives in Tuscaloosa? Could he become the next great Crimson Tide defensive tackle? Major decisions are looming for the SEC, ACC, Big 12 this week in regards to what schedule model these conferences will turn to as we near the end of July and on-field practices set to begin Aug 7. With the NCAA now allowing teams to move games up to Aug. 29 to provide flexibility if any COVID-19 outbreak happens, could we see Alabama do that possibility?
