Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, FOX News Bill Hemmer has stayed true to his roots, cheering for his hometown teams, the Elder Panthers, Reds, and Bengals, no matter where he's gone in the world. Hemmer, who was in Kansas City last Sunday for the Bengals AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs, got In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss the outcome, quality of officiating, his work in journalism that goes back to when he was working sports at WLWT-TV and WCPO-TV with John Popovich and Dennis Janson. Football is a passion for the FOX News co-anchor, who teams with Dana Perino on America's Newsroom on weekday mornings and has since his days at Our Lady of Victory and Elder High School, where he followed older brother Andy Hemmer (played at Boston College) earning honorable mention all-city as a defensive back his senior year. Not only do Hemmer and Lap talk about the success of the Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow, but they also dig into Hemmer's work as a reporter for both CNN and FOX News and stories and interviews that have stayed with him over the years. Who would be his dream interview? Hemmer also turns the table of Lapham looking to start early talks about the Bengals' draft needs in the next NFL Draft to be held this spring.

It's hard to believe we're doing our final Postgame Thoughts here on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics. However, the Cincinnati Bengals went down fighting after a slow start against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday night, 23-20. Like many games during an entire season, plays were made, plays were missed, and there are always questions on calls from officials that seem to go against your team. That is no different from what happened to Zac Taylor and his exciting squad of talented players, who aimed to capture a second consecutive AFC Championship crown and a return trip to the Super Bowl. While the Bengals made enough plays to take the game down to the final seconds, this season had no magical ending. The future is bright with a roster full of young and talented players, but as with any new season, there will undoubtedly be some changes along the way with the NFL Draft coming this spring and other roster moves. While we'll leave the latter part for another In The Trenches, the future is bright and exciting for those who cheer on Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and company in the stands, at home, or across the world. We hope you've enjoyed our coverage of the Bengals this season on In The Trenches, and we can't thank First Star Logistics enough for their tremendous support in allowing us to do something we love.

Do you believe it...  The Cincinnati Bengals, after an 0-2 start, are in their second consecutive AFC Championship Game. Now looking for their eleventh straight victory of the season, Zac Taylor, Joe Burrow, and the rest of the Bengals are coming off their most complete game of the season and look poised to make a return visit to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs and Bengals have played it close in the three previous meetings over the past thirteen months. However, this one has a lot of drama heading into it, with questions about Patrick Mahomes after he injured his ankle last weekend and late Friday talk of star tight end Travis Kelce coming up with a back issue, making him questionable for Sunday's game. While we know this will be another significant test for the Bengals, the way they've been playing has many feeling comfortable to foresee the Bengals playing on the final weekend of the NFL season. However, we know the game must still be played on the field, and anything can happen.

The Bengals are looking for their tenth straight victory of the season. While the NFL decided to go ahead and sell tickets for a Bills vs. Chiefs Championship Game, the Bengals know the first order of business is stopping Bills quarterback Josh Allen and protecting Joe Burrow with their revamped offensive line missing three starters. This match-up was to happen at the beginning of the month, with the Bengals jumping to a quick score and their defense holding Allen and the Bills' offense to a field goal. The second drive went as well as the first before play was stopped, with Damar Hamlin suffering cardiac arrest and shocking both teams to the core. While nothing from the first meeting was counted, this time, the game has a significant reward as the winner will take on the winner of the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. the Kansas City Chiefs match-up in the AFC Championship Game. This week on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, we've had some great guests leading up to the game. So be sure to check out any you might have missed.

The Bengals finished with the No. 3 seed and will welcome back John Harbaugh and the Ravens for their Wild Card game on Sunday night at 8:15 pm on NBC and the First Star Logistics Bengals Radio Network. Joe Burrow and the offense were not sharp, only posting 257 total yards of offense as Burrow went 25 of 42 for 215 yards and one touchdown to Ja'Marr Chase. Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine combined for 17 carries for 45 yards and a Mixon touchdown. The Bengals' defense gave up 386 yards but posted four sacks and two interceptions while also recovering two fumbles, including a Joseph Ossai touchdown after Trey Hendrickson stripped Ravens quarterback Anthony Brown. One primary concern is the injury to Bengals right guard Alex Cappa who might be out for the rest of the season. Before college football became all about Power Five Conferences, football on the East Coast was some of the most competitive and led by several Hall of Fame coaches. While it may seem complicated to believe today, there was a time when Syracuse versus Penn State was for bragging rights in the Eastern part of the country. My college coach, Ben Schwartzwalder, battled Nittany Lion coaches Rip Engle and Joe Paterno during his long coaching career in some epic battles. Before arriving on the Syracuse campus, Franco Harris was on the campus of Penn State, making plays for Paterno and the Nittany Lions. Because of the old NCAA rules when first-year students didn't play, I'd seen Harris make plays and would compete against his Nittany Lions squad my sophomore year, which was his senior year. This was the start of a longtime rivalry between our teams. Harris would become a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1972 NFL Draft, and a few years later, Paul Brown and the Cincinnati Bengals drafted me in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft. For my ten seasons with the Bengals, we played the Steelers 20 times, with the Bengals earning eight wins against a Steelers squad that would win four Super Bowls, with many Steelers feeling Franco was the glue to their success. After the 1983 season, the Steelers felt Franco had seen his better days and allowed him to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, where he ended his career in 1984.  I left the Bengals after the 1983 season, where I would play two years in the USFL for the New Jersey Generals before ending my playing career. Shortly after, started a career in broadcasting as a color analyst with the Bengals in 1986. While Franco Harris was a longtime rival, he was also a great man off the field who touched many by giving his time and energy for the betterment of all.  Harris was more than just part of one of the greatest plays in NFL history, the "Immaculate Reception," and I wanted to take time on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to pay tribute to one of football's all-time greats, Franco Harris.

Another big week on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, as the Cincinnati Bengals earned their spot in the AFC playoffs while looking to extend their winning streak to seven games by taking on another "Goat" Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Unlike last weekend, Joe Burrow and the Bengals' offense was firing on all cylinders in the first half of the game, putting up 22 points, while Lou Anarumo had the defense dialed in, shutting out Mac Jones and the Patriots' offense for a 22-0 lead at the half. But as good as Burrow and the Bengals' offense was at the start, things stalled as Belichick sprinkled his special magic dust as his defense posted the first Patriots points in the third quarter on a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown and then saw Jones throw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to trail the Bengals 22-18. The Bengals' offense placed the defense on the ropes. Still, Anarumo saw D.J. Reader, Vonn Bell, and B.J. Hill working to force and recover a fumble when it looked like Belichick was about to add another career win over the Bengals in the closing seconds of the game. While the offense continued to struggle, the Bengals' defense made one more stand after a great directional punt by Drue Chrisman to close the door on the Patriots, post their seventh consecutive win, and move to 11-4 with two weeks left in the regular season against the AFC leading Buffalo Bills and AFC North rival the Baltimore Ravens.

Week 16 of the NFL season is here, along with the holidays. The Cincinnati Bengals (10-4) have now clinched a spot in the playoffs but look to keep their winning streak going against the New England Patriots (7-7) and another "GOAT" in Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on Saturday. With goals of winning the AFC North and still with a chance to earn the top overall seed in the AFC, Zac Taylor and the Bengals will look to #RuleTheJungle at Gillette Stadium. Belichick brings a team smarting after their stunning loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in a very un-Belichick way. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow knows despite their 7-7 record, Belichick and the Patriots are not a team to take lightly and will look to keep the offense humming as they did against Tampa Bay last Sunday. However, injuries continue to mount, especially on the defensive side, with defensive end, Sam Hubbard already ruled out for the game and Cam Taylor-Britt and others with question marks beside their names leading up to the NFL scheduled kickoff of 1:00 p.m. eastern. This week on our YouTube channel on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, we've heard from Coach Taylor ( https://youtu.be/ZADHICjHjYo ) - Burrow ( https://youtu.be/ZtpFriwBi_0 ) - and his father, Jimmy Burrow ( https://youtu.be/o4Z63vKSVK8 ) along with a Livestream from the First Star Logistics studio on Tuesday (  https://youtu.be/Hz4PwyeZWPw ) leading up to the game. For Jimmy Burrow, watching his son play at the game's highest level is a treat. The former college football defensive coordinator understands the game differently than most parents of pro football players but knows when a team has something special. The 2022 Cincinnati Bengals, with his son, Joe Burrow, at quarterback, is one such team as they've taken a poor start of the season and turned it into the hottest team in the NFL with three regular-season games remaining. The coach in him also knows that while the Bengals offense gets a lot of the praise and credit for the team's success, defense is a significant component to winning championships, and with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo at the helm, this Bengals squad is resilient in all phases of the game. We welcome back to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, Jimmy Burrow, as he and Lap breakdown the Bengals' field success despite critical injuries to D.J. It was another big week on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, as the Bengals looked to extend their winning streak to six games taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and "The Goat," Tom Brady, on the road. After a rough start, Zac Taylor watched his defense step forward, forcing Brady into two interceptions and two fumbles, with In The Trenches favorite D.J. Reader showing why he's a Pro Bowl performer. Down17-3 to Brady at the half, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took advantage of the Buccaneers miscues finishing the game going 27 of 39 for 200 yards, four touchdowns with one interception off another tipped pass. Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase led all Bengals' receivers with seven receptions for 60 yards and one score. In comparison, Tyler Boyd showed his toughness playing with a surgically repaired finger last weekend with five receptions for 35 yards and a score. The 34-23 victory was won using all phases of the game as special teams also came up big on a Buccaneers punting miscue recovered by Markus Bailey, coffin corner punting by Drue Chrisman, and kickoff coverage keeping Tampa Bay in poor field position. The win keeps the Bengals sitting at the top of the AFC North standings, one full game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens and third overall in the AFC playoff standings heading into their Week 16 match-up against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve at 1:00 p.m. est. on the road. After a rough start to the season, the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line had come together, becoming the group offensive line coach Frank Pollack expected when he stressed he was looking for an offensive line full of "Glass Eaters" after the signing of center Ted Karras, right guard Alex Cappa, and right tackle La'el Collins in free agency and the drafting of rookie left guard of Cordell Volson when teamed with left tackle Jonah Williams. The Bengals are currently on a five-game winning streak, and while several players have stepped forward during the streak to help secure wins, the play of the offensive line can be credited to giving quarterback Joe Burrow more time to scan the field and find open receivers and for opening running lanes for Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon to have big games. Next for the Bengals is the 6-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming off an unimpressive 35-7 beatdown by the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. However, the team that always seemed to have Joe Burrow's and the Bengals number, the Cleveland Browns, was up next in another must-win for the Bengals to keep pace in their chase for the AFC North title and AFC Playoffs. Burrow and company came away with a big 23-10 win over the hated Browns, but it was, as Burrow said during his postgame press conference, "An Ugly Team Win," to say the least. Burrow was good enough, and Joe Mixon's return was perfect as the Bengals played without Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. Ja'Marr Chase came up big with 10 receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown, and In The Trenches, favorite Trenton Irwin posted another touchdown on a flea-flicker. But give credit where it's due, as Lou Anarumo and the Bengals defense, especially D.J. Reader, Vonn Bell, Logan Wilson, and rookie Cam Taylor-Britt played significant roles in the win. Coming off a big win over the Pittsburgh Steelers a week ago, the Tennessee Titans (7-3) are looking to answer for last year's playoff loss to the Bengals by keeping Joe Burrow and company from coming to Nashville and taking back another big win. The Bengals know they'll be without running back Joe Mixon in this game and will look towards last week's star, Samaje Perine, Trayveon Williams, and Chris Evans, to carry the load. Questions remain despite talk early in the week that Ja'Marr Chase could return to the field in this game. Burrow and the offense showed they're not a one-man offense against the Steelers and will need to see a repeat performance against the Titans.
