Bengals Enter Dog Days of Training Camp | In The Trenches with Dave Lapham

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2025 19:44

Welcome back to "In The Trenches with Dave Lapham," presented by First Star Logistics! As the Cincinnati Bengals push deeper into their 2025 training camp, the initial excitement gives way to the grueling reality of the NFL grind. Dave Lapham was on hand for the weekend's practices and provides his expert analysis as the team enters what is notoriously known as the "dog days" of training camp. In this episode, Lapham joins Dave Berk to break down the key takeaways from the practice field. Right off the bat, Lapham is incredibly impressed with the readiness of the Bengals' primary offensive weapons. He asserts that Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown look like they could play a regular-season game tomorrow. Their sharpness, understanding of the offense, and phenomenal physical condition are on full display, signaling that the core of this high-powered attack is primed for a big year. Lapham goes as far as to say he believes this 2025 Bengals roster, from top to bottom, has the potential to be the best in the entire National Football League. A major focus of any Bengals discussion is the offensive line, a unit that has been under scrutiny in recent seasons. Lapham provides a nuanced perspective on their progress. He discusses the coaching staff's strategy of moving players around to different positions, emphasizing the critical importance of versatility. In the modern NFL, the ability for a lineman to play multiple spots—like guard and tackle, or on both the left and right sides—is invaluable. This not only creates depth but also forces players to elevate their technical understanding of the game. Lapham draws on his own extensive career to explain how mastering different positions is a hallmark of a long-term, successful player. He gives a special mention to younger players like Jalen Rivers, highlighting how this cross-training is essential for them to secure a roster spot. On the defensive side of the ball, Lapham identifies a couple of position groups that have pleasantly surprised him with their depth and talent: the defensive ends and the secondary. He notes that the Bengals have a significantly larger number of athletes ready to compete at an NFL level in these areas than in recent years. This abundance of capable players is creating a fiercely competitive environment, pushing everyone to elevate their game. Lapham is particularly impressed with the mindset of these players, who are not just physically gifted but are mentally prepared for the fight, day in and day out. The conversation also turns to the topic of injuries. While minor injuries are an unavoidable part of any training camp across the league, Lapham reports that the Bengals appear to be managing them well. He suggests that the current ailments are minor and shouldn't cost any key players significant time once the regular season begins. The medical and training staff are being cautious, ensuring that minor issues don't escalate into major problems, a testament to their proactive approach to player health. A spotlight is shone on safety Tycen Anderson, who is taking advantage of increased reps to prove he's more than just a special teams ace. Lapham describes Anderson as a highly intelligent and competitive player who is "thirsting for more." His desire to understand the intricacies of the defense and his constant questioning of the coaches' schemes showcase a player with a high football IQ and a drive to become a significant contributor on defense. Finally, Lapham offers a deep dive into the psychology of surviving the dog days of training camp. He explains that this is the period where mental fortitude is just as important as physical conditioning. The long days, the repetition, and the physical toll require a professional mindset focused on recovery, proper nutrition, and rest. With a Monday Night Football preseason game on the horizon, the Bengals face a long week of work, providing a perfect opportunity to instill game plans and test the team's focus before they face a short week leading into their final preseason contest.

Lapham Breaks Down Bengals' Preseason Loss to Eagles: Burrow's Brilliance & Defensive Woes

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2025 26:33

Join Dave Lapham and Dave Berk for an in-depth analysis of the Cincinnati Bengals' 34-27 preseason-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. In this episode of "In The Trenches," presented by First Star Logistics, Lapham breaks down the highs and lows of the Bengals' first game action of the 2025 season. The story of the night was the tale of two quarterbacks for the Bengals. Joe Burrow was in mid-season form, delivering a spectacular performance that had the hosts buzzing. Burrow finished his night an impressive 9-of-10 for 123 yards and two touchdowns, earning a stellar 157.5 quarterback rating. Lapham notes that Burrow's excellence in practice has clearly carried over, stating he's "preparing and bracing himself for a phenomenal season." His accuracy was on full display, with Lapham remarking, "he is so accurate, he puts the ball in the tightest spots." The connection between Burrow and his star receivers was electric. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were running "unbelievably precise routes," and the chemistry they've built with their quarterback was evident. Lapham emphasizes the trust Burrow has in his targets, particularly highlighting the performance of tight end Tanner Hudson, who caught two touchdown passes, one from Burrow and the other from Desmond Ridder. However, the narrative shifted dramatically once the first-team offense left the field. The backup quarterbacks, Jake Browning and Desmond Ridder, struggled to find a consistent rhythm. Browning went 6-of-14 for 62 yards with an interception, while Ridder was 7-of-16 for 91 yards and a touchdown. Lapham points out the stark difference in performance, acknowledging the significant drop-off from a quarterback of Burrow's caliber. On the defensive side of the ball, there were notable concerns. The Eagles' offense found success on the ground, rushing for 132 yards and averaging over four and a half yards per carry. Lapham notes that the Bengals' defense, under the direction of Al Golden, had trouble containing the Eagles' rushing attack, allowing for some "big gaps to run the football in." He did, however, see some positive flashes from the rookie class, including defensive lineman Shemar Stewart, who he believes "has star power." The special teams unit had a mixed bag of results. Evan McPherson was a perfect two-for-two on field goals, including a long of 51 yards, a positive sign for the veteran kicker. The return game also showed promise, with Jermaine Burton and Gary Brightwell providing some exciting returns. In this comprehensive breakdown, Dave Lapham provides his expert insights on individual player performances, offensive and defensive schemes, and what the Bengals need to work on as they continue through the preseason.  This is a must-listen for any Bengals fan looking for a detailed and knowledgeable perspective on the team's first outing of 2025.

In The Trenches: Bengals vs. Eagles 2025 Preseason Preview with Dave Lapham

Welcome to "In The Trenches with Dave Lapham," presented by First Star Logistics.[1] As the Cincinnati Bengals prepare to kick off their 2025 preseason, legendary Bengals offensive lineman and longtime broadcaster Dave Lapham joins Dave Berk to provide an in-depth preview of the first matchup against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. This episode is packed with expert analysis on key players, crucial position battles, and what fans should be watching for as the team begins its journey. Joe Burrow: A Talent Aging Like 'Fine Wine' A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to the exceptional talent of quarterback Joe Burrow. Berk, who has watched Burrow since his high school days, offers unparalleled insight into his development. Lapham describes Burrow's continuous improvement as being "like a fine wine," noting that every year he gets better. This isn't just about natural talent; it's about a relentless work ethic and a profound understanding of the game. Lapham breaks down the nuances of Burrow's mechanics, his pinpoint accuracy, and his flawless footwork.  He emphasizes that Burrow's ability to process defenses, both pre- and post-snap, is what truly sets him apart. According to Lapham, Burrow was "born and bred to throw a football," and his ability to place the ball exactly where it needs to be, with velocity, is a sight to behold. Berk and Lapham agree that the difference between Burrow and any other quarterback in camp is immediately obvious, highlighting his status as a truly elite, once-in-a-generation player. The Trenches: A 'Huge Battle' on the Offensive Line The conversation naturally shifts to the men tasked with protecting the franchise quarterback. Lapham identifies the interior offensive line, specifically the guard positions, as the most critical area to watch this preseason. He calls it a "huge battle" that could very well determine the success of the Bengals' entire season. The guards were a weak link last year, and the team has made a concerted effort to address this through the draft and free agency. A major focus is on rookie offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild from Georgia. Lapham is incredibly high on Fairchild, calling him one of the most "finished products" he's seen coming out of college in a long time. He praises Fairchild's technical skill, his powerful feet, and his hand usage. Having played in the highly competitive SEC and for a national championship-winning program, Fairchild has been tested against the best and understands what it takes to win. Lapham believes he is destined for an "outstanding career" and will likely start at guard for the Bengals. The development of depth at offensive tackle behind starters Orlando Brown Jr. and Amarius Mims is also a key storyline, as the long NFL season always tests a team's resilience. New-Look Defense and Key Players to Watch Under new defensive coordinator Al Golden, the Bengals' defense is another area of intense focus. While the preseason schemes will be "pretty vanilla," Lapham explains that the coaches will be evaluating individual performances, consistency, and accountability. Golden is instilling a culture of meticulous detail, ensuring every player understands not just their assignment, but how it fits into the broader defensive concept. The goal is to build a unit where teammates can trust each other to execute on every snap. The hosts also highlight specific players fans should keep an eye on, including Desmond Ritter, who is competing for a backup quarterback role, and the new, young linebackers who are expected to bring speed and energy to the field. Conversely, several key players are not expected to play in the first preseason game, including Dax Hill, B.J. Hill, Cam Taylor-Britt, and Mike Gesicki. Dive deep into the Cincinnati Bengals' philosophy and strategy heading into the crucial 2025 NFL Draft. As April arrives, so does the anticipation for how the Bengals will build upon their foundation. This video explores the enduring principle established by team founder Paul Brown: Draft, Develop, Retain. This core tenet remains the bedrock of the Bengals' approach to team building, aiming for sustained success rather than quick fixes. We examine recent proof of this philosophy in action, highlighting the extensions and mega-deals for cornerstone players like Joe Burrow (2020 1st pick), Tee Higgins (2020 2nd round pick), and Ja'Marr Chase (2021 1st pick). These moves underscore the commitment to identifying talent in the draft, nurturing its growth within the Bengals' system, and ultimately securing those players for the long term. The discussion extends to the Bengals' recent free agency moves, where 13 out of 17 initial signings were their own players they opted to retain. This further emphasizes their dedication to keeping homegrown talent like Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, Tanner Hudson, Joseph Ossai, and Cam Sample while strategically adding external pieces. This strategy has not only built continuity but also contributed to making Cincinnati an increasingly attractive destination for free agents seeking a successful and stable environment. A significant portion of the video delves into the unique structure of the Bengals' draft evaluation process, another legacy of Paul Brown. Learn how the coaching staff is deeply integrated, acting as extensions of the scouting department. Position coaches meticulously break down film and study tape, project players' fits into the Bengals' specific offensive and defensive schemes, and actively participate in interviews and visits. Discover the potential "secret weapon" the Bengals possess this year with Defensive Coordinator Al Golden. His recent experience coaching at Notre Dame provides invaluable insight into Fighting Irish prospects like Howard Cross, Jack Kiser, Xavier Watts, and Benjamin Morrison. Beyond just Notre Dame players, Golden's recent immersion in the college game means he's prepared defensive game plans against a wide array of top college offenses and prospects nationwide, giving the Bengals an extra layer of evaluation depth. This insight, combined with the college coaching backgrounds of other staff members (OL, DL, LB coaches), creates a robust evaluation team. The video emphasizes why this draft aligns perfectly with the Bengals' pressing needs. Experts widely regard the 2025 draft class as exceptionally deep along the interior offensive and defensive lines – precisely where Cincinnati needs reinforcement to compete effectively, especially within the physical AFC North. We identify and analyze several potential draft targets who could bolster the trenches: Offensive Line: Names like Kelvin Banks (Texas), Will Campbell (LSU), Josh Conerly (Oregon), Marcus Minor (Purdue), Jonah Savaiinaea (Arizona), and Gray Zabel (NDSU) are discussed, with a strong emphasis on the crucial trait of position versatility. The ability of a lineman to play both tackle and guard or multiple interior spots is highly valued in today's NFL. Defensive Line: Explore prospects suited for the interior, like Notre Dame's Howard Cross, Michigan's powerful duo of Mason Graham and the exceptionally athletic Kenneth Grant, Oklahoma's long-armed Derek Harmon, Kentucky's massive Deone Walker, and Ohio State's Tyleik Williams. The need for stout run defenders and interior pass rush is paramount. Edge Rushers: This section briefly touches upon high-upside edge players like Abdul Carter (Penn State), James Pearce Jr. (Tennessee), and Shemar Stewart (Texas A&M), acknowledging the Bengals' potential interest if top talent slides. Ultimately, the Bengals' draft strategy involves identifying the best available athlete who fits their culture and scheme, particularly when top talent unexpectedly falls. While needs on the offensive and defensive lines are clear, the Bengals won't hesitate to add value at other positions. This draft presents a massive opportunity to solidify the lines, protect Joe Burrow, improve the run defense, and maximize their championship window by adhering to their time-tested "Draft, Develop, Retain" philosophy. Inside The Bengals: Part Two Mike Potts & Dave Lapham

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 28:50

Dive back into the fascinating world of NFL scouting in Part 2 of Dave Lapham's insightful conversation with Cincinnati Bengals Scouting Director Mike Potts.  Following up on their initial discussion, Lapham and Potts delve deeper into the intricate process of evaluating talent for the NFL Draft, offering Bengals fans and draft enthusiasts a rare glimpse behind the curtain. This segment tackles the crucial balance between on-field performance ("the tape") and athletic testing metrics from events like the NFL Combine. Potts emphasizes that while game film remains the ultimate arbiter ("the biggest deal is put on the tape and what do you see, right?"), athletic testing provides valuable context and potential indicators. They discuss the challenge of projecting players whose testing numbers might not align perfectly with their college production, exploring how scheme, coaching, or usage might influence what's seen on film. Can a player with "freakish" athletic traits but modest college stats be unlocked in the Bengals' system? Potts explains how the scouting department works to answer these complex questions. A significant portion of the discussion revolves around gathering comprehensive player intelligence. Potts details how the Bengals leverage every available resource – from internal coaching staff insights (mentioning new additions like Al Golden and Jerry Montgomery, who bring fresh perspectives from college and other pro teams) to extensive networks of college contacts. He explains the value of coaches who have either game-planned against a prospect or coached them directly, providing nuanced understanding beyond the raw film. The conversation highlights the importance of the player interview process. It's not just about football knowledge; it's about understanding the person, their character, work ethic, and how they might fit into the Bengals' locker room culture. Potts shares how they assess football IQ – can the player articulate concepts, understand schemes, and "talk football" intelligently when breaking down film? Interestingly, he notes that sometimes the most impressive prospects aren't the most polished interviewees, and vice-versa, requiring scouts to look deeper. Lapham probes Potts to see whether players ever ask insightful questions back, revealing another layer of the evaluation. Potts, a former quarterback himself (William & Mary, brief pro stints), shares his perspective on how having played the game informs his scouting approach. He discusses how that experience helps him understand locker room dynamics, recognize subtle on-field traits, evaluate positional nuances, and relate to the pressures players face. This lived experience adds a crucial dimension to interpreting player profiles. They touch upon the current state of the Bengals' roster-building philosophy, acknowledging the "good problem" of having drafted exceptionally well with stars like Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins. The discussion implicitly covers the challenges of retaining top talent under the salary cap, referencing the franchise tag on Higgins and Chase's potential market-setting value. The ongoing situation with Trey Hendrickson is also alluded to, illustrating the constant evaluation involved in managing the roster and cap, weighing player value against compensation and team needs. Potts reinforces the goal isn't to get rid of good players, but to continuously find ways to improve the team through all avenues – draft, free agency, and trades – while maintaining financial flexibility and avoiding burdensome "dead money." Specific position groups from the recent Combine are discussed, acknowledging the remarkable athleticism on display, particularly along the defensive and offensive lines and in the secondary. Potts notes the trend of players getting bigger, stronger, and faster each year, presenting exciting but challenging evaluations. They discuss the depth present in this year's draft across various positions, emphasizing that while some spots might be more "top-heavy," there's talent to be found throughout the draft. Ultimately, Potts paints a picture of a meticulous, multi-layered evaluation process that goes far beyond just watching highlights. It involves synthesizing film, athletic data, medical information, character assessments, scheme fit projections, and input from coaches and contacts to build a comprehensive draft board. He stresses the collaborative nature of the process and the goal of finding players who not only possess talent but also align with the Bengals' culture and vision for sustained success. This Part 2 discussion is essential viewing for anyone wanting to understand the modern NFL scouting landscape and the Cincinnati Bengals' specific approach to building a championship-caliber roster.

Get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Cincinnati Bengals' roster-building strategy with Mike Potts, a key Bengals' personnel and scouting department member. In this insightful interview, Mike pulls back the curtain on the chaotic yet crucial off-season processes that shape the future of an NFL franchise. The off-season in the National Football League is a whirlwind of activity, and Mike Potts navigates through it all. His area of focus is college scouting, a vital ingredient in the modern NFL, where roster turnover is constant. No roster is the same from one year to the next, and the draft and college free agency are often the lifeblood of franchises looking to rebuild or maintain their competitive edge. Mike begins by vividly describing the current landscape, describing it as a "crazy time of the year" due to the simultaneous whirlwind of free agency, the NFL Combine, and the looming draft. He emphasizes that maintaining a consistent dialogue between the personnel staff, coaching staff, and ownership is crucial for aligning player evaluations and setting clear team goals. He dives into the Bengals' free agency strategy, highlighting the team's priority of re-signing their own players. He underlines the importance of understanding "scheme fit" and "culture fit," ensuring players align with the Bengals' values and locker room dynamics. While acknowledging the large sums of money thrown around in free agency, he stresses the importance of cap management. The Bengals are known for remaining responsible with their cap, and he discusses how the team balances retaining key players with adding talent from other organizations. The interview transitions into discussing the "secondary market" of free agency and finding opportunities beyond the initial bidding frenzy. Mike acknowledges that some players overshot the market, and being patient for the price to come down can present an opportunity. Samaje Perine is discussed, as is his importance to the Bengals organization. Sam Hubbard's departure from the team after an impressive career is also discussed. The discussion moves to the college draft, a central theme of Mike Potts' expertise. He emphasizes the value of players with positional versatility, as NFL rosters are limited in size, and players who can contribute in multiple roles are particularly valuable. He highlights BJ Hill, Mike Gesicki, and Cody Ford as players who can perform at numerous positions. Potts explains why his team is so important to him and the direction of the team. According to him, the team's job is to scout each player and understand everything from their college careers to more personal details. Transitioning to the upcoming NFL Draft, Potts assesses the overall depth and quality of the available talent. He explains that there may not be any first-ballot hall of farmers, but there is still a good amount of depth at various positions. As the interview wraps up, Potts emphasizes the ongoing nature of roster evaluation and improvement. He notes that the Bengals will continue to monitor the free-agent market, assess draft prospects, and identify players who can contribute to the team's success.
