All the links - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISONThis is a podcast about taking five minutes to be present.May is National Meditation Month so check out my YouTube channel and look for the meditation playlist. There are over 31 meditations out there and you can give meditation a try.I would say we are back into the business of the” busyness” of life after the pandemic. Time is a premium for most of us and we all have the ability to make choices about where and how we spend our time. When I say that I use my voice to heal, educate and inspire as a voice talent, meditation guide and trainer, I usually get a few responses like:“I could never meditate, I can't stop my mind.”“Meditation is so hard.”“I don't have time to meditate.”“People tell me I have a great voice.”“I've always wanted to be a voice actor.”“I want to learn to meditate, I just don't know where to start.”Meditation is a practice. Think about a snow globe. When you shake it up, eventually the snow settles to the bottom, that's what meditation feels like. The thoughts in your mind begin to settle more and more with practice. There are still days my mind has thoughts swirling around and around, and other days I feel very settled. It's still practice.I really tried to do the 30 minute meditation practice. It didn't work for me. I started doing 10 - 15 minute meditations where I would sit on my own and that worked much better.Sometimes we just need a place to start. Let's start where you are. Breathing is the foundation for a meditation practice. Enjoy this five minute breathing practice that can be done anytime and help with calming your nervous system and focusing on the present moment. It's a series of breaths. This is audio only it can help you focus more without having your eyes open.

"Take Five and Breathe" is a dharma talk on the unique timing signature of life. We want life to be in 4/4 time, but life is a jazz musician, and will throw in 5/4 time whenever it gets the urge. Luckily the Buddha taught us to flow with whatever quirky timing life threw at us. This talk invokes everything from Dave Brubeck to Sleep Token, from Tron Legacy to The Little John Beecher Orchestra and more, all in the name of helping us handle the vicissitudes of life a little better. I hope you enjoy this talk in honor of International Jazz Day and Dave Brubeck Day! Also, I included a Spotify Playlist of a few jazz songs that inspired tonights topic.

Xmas time is here! So we're bringing our annual Yuletide gifts to you in the form of rockin' and poppin' tunes. The first present under the tree is "I Want a Beatle For Christmas" by Patty Surbey & The Canadian VIPs. Requests for people put Santa Claus in an awkward position. The next gift is "Deck Five" by Saturday's Children. We think this one should be more well-known: it joins "Deck The Halls" with Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take Five" and ... it works? Sometimes you get an inappropriate gift, and Bey Ireland's "All I Want For Christmas is a Go-Go Girl" is this year's example. It's a weird fusion of Northern Soul and lounge crooning ... Let's forget about all that and get back to the real Goofy Greats - "The Wildest Christmas" by The Rumbles Ltd. Santa makes an appearance in this one, and he sounds like Classy Freddie Blassie! And there's even a final stocking stuffer, so tune in to hear what it is - jing a linga, jing jing a linga!

Pianist/composer Dave Brubeck and Alto Saxophonist Paul Desmond are enshrined in jazz history as the most prominent voices of the popular Dave Brubeck quartet. This group cast an outsized shadow over the jazz scene of the 1950's and 1960's, Desmond's composition "Take Five" is one of the most beloved jazz compositions of all time and was the biggest hit the quartet ever had. Brubeck incorporated diverse musical influences, including that of French composer Darius Milhaud to fashion a style that incorporated odd rhythmic meters and polytonality into a fusion that predated the “third stream” movement. Desmond is perhaps the most influential voice on his instrument since Charlie Parker, he was famously quoted as saying his lyrical, pure sound on the instrument was a result of his wanting to sound like a “dry martini". His series of recordings with guitarist Jim Hall are masterpieces of melodic inventiveness, a testament to his spare, beautiful voice as both composer and performer. Enjoying the show? On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Jamie's next pick, The Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out". Released in 1959, it was the thirteenth album released by the Quartet, and was their most successful album. After taking a trip with the US State Department on a trip of Eurasia, Dave Brubeck discovered the street music of Turkey and their use of time signatures that would be unusual in jazz. "Time Out" features 7 songs with odd time signatures, including Take Five, the best selling jazz single of all time. But what will the boys think of the album? Come along and find out! And also listen to Adam get increasingly frustrated with Bell and Jamie.

The sonically innovative harpist, Brandee Younger, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy® Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award and later, the winner of the 2024 NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Jazz Album for her latest album Brand New Life. Ever-expanding as an artist, she has worked with cultural icons including Common, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Pharoah Sanders and Christian McBride. Her original composition “Hortense” was featured in the Netflix Concert-Documentary, Beyoncé: Homecoming and in 2019, Brandee was selected to perform her original music as a featured performer for Quincy Jones and Steve McQueens' “Soundtrack of America”. Brandee is often noted for standing on the shoulders of the very women who ushered in the harp as a clear and distinct voice in jazz & popular styles - particularly Detroit natives Dorothy Ashby & Alice Coltrane. Her new album, Brand New Life, builds on her already rich oeuvre, and cements the harp's place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic, personal, political, and spiritual. Younger's music is imbued with a sense of purpose and respect of legacy, creating a larger platform for the harp to reach newer and wider audiences than ever before. In addition to teaching at Steinhardt, Younger holds leadership positions as a board member of The Coltrane Home and New Music USA.Maggie speaks with Brandee at the 67 Monterey Jazz Festival about her band and her association with Alice Coltrane and The Year of Alice.“No harpist thus far has been more capable of combining all of the modern harp traditions — from Salzedo, through Dorothy Ashby, through Alice Coltrane — with such strength, grace and commitment.” - The New York TimesFollow: @harpistaSource: https://brandeeyounger.com/Source:https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/people/brandee-youngerSource: https://thecoltranehome.org/2024/03/16/let-the-year-of-alice-begin/Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. If you want a clear look at the way Michael Bates grew up, just turn on the famous documentary “Meth Storm” on Netflix. This is the town he grew up in, and the people he knew as his community. I met Bates as my husband's Sgt. in the Marine Corps. Immediately he was intimidating to me, but as we grew to know each other, I quickly realized how much more to his story I had to learn. In this episode, you'll hear how Bates (that's what we call him) went from living in an abandoned school bus, to owning a plane that he flies his family and friends around in. It wasn't easy, and it took work, but his perspective on life will leave you both inspired AND motivated to take a look at all of those opportunities around you and ask yourself…why not?Connect with us:Follow Kaity on Instagram @thebrand.5Learn More about the Brand5 and Take Five.
