Tommy talks with David Schultz, Professor of Political Science at Hamline University, about President Trump refusing to rule out a third term and why supposed possibilities like the "vice presidential loophole" don't legally exist.

The federal government appeared likely to win a high-stakes appeal over a multibillion-dollar telecommunications fund while securing a win on Biden-era regulations on build-at-home "ghost guns." Several justices during arguments March 26 in FCC v. Consumers' Research, appeared hesitant to reinvigorate the so-called nondelegation doctrine to strike down the Universal Service Fund. The fund is intended to increase broadband access to rural and low income areas. Hosts Greg Stohr and Kimberly Robinson also discuss the court's 7-2 'ghost gun' ruling where liberal justices were joined in the majority by Chief Justice John Roberts and conservatives Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. The hosts also highlight the upcoming argument in Medina v. Planned Parenthood, a case about South Carolina's decision to remove Planned Parenthood from its Medicaid program. - Produced by David Schultz

Millions of US companies are off the hook when it comes to disclosing their beneficial owners' identities to the federal government, after the Trump administration announced it wouldn't enforce penalties for domestic entities under the Corporate Transparency Act. The Treasury Department's previous regulations had required about 30 million businesses operating in the US to disclose who directly or indirectly controlled them in reports to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. But in a pivot from the previous administration, the Treasury now says all US entities are exempt from reporting requirements. The move was the latest twist in a wave of litigation against the law, which some companies argue oversteps Congress's authority to regulate interstate commerce. Following a nationwide injunction blocking the CTA's enforcement in December 2024, businesses across the country faced whiplash as the law and the previous version of its implementing regulations were successively enjoined past the original January 2025 compliance deadline. But now, facing a narrower scope of which companies are obliged to comply under new rules, appeals courts must now grapple with whether newly exempt domestic companies retain their standing to sue. In the presidential race, 270 is the magic number — 270 Electoral College votes to win the presidency. A states' allocation of electors, such as Minnesota's ten electors, is based on population. There are 538 members of the Electoral College — which means a presidential candidate must secure the backing of 270 electors to win. This election cycle, a lot of attention has been paid to the importance of seven battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Each campaign needs to win those state's electoral college votes for victory.A number of organizations have created models to predict the result based on some combination of recent polling, demographic information and other data. It's complicated. To parse it out, Hamline University political science and law professor David Schultz joins MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to chat about how each candidate could get to those 270 votes.
