The Insecurity Trap with Emeritus Professor Paul Rogers

Paul Rogers is Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University and an Honorary Fellow of the Joint Service Command and Staff College (JSCSC). Paul lectures on changing drivers of international conflict with particular interests in the Middle East and paramilitary violence, and also has a long-term research interest in the interaction between socioeconomic marginalisation, climate disruption and security. Paul has written/edited 30 books and over 150 papers and book chapters. Paul is a regular broadcaster on radio and TV networks worldwide. He also writes a weekly column on international affairs for Open Democracy. In this conversation, I speak with Professor Rogers about his latest book, The Insecurity Trap, which explores the intersection of ecological, economic, and military issues and their collective impact on global security. The discussion spans topics including climate breakdown, military-industrial complexes, socio-economic inequalities, and practical actions individuals can take to foster positive change. Questions covered: 1. How do ecological, economic and security issues combine to create the insecurity trap? 2. What is 'liddism', and why do Western governments prefer it to dealing with the root causes of insecurity? 3. Why is it so hard for conventional military commanders to see ecological collapse as a spur to conflict, and what do those that do suggest to address it? 4. What impact do you think the new Trump administration could have on ecological issues as a source of insecurity? 5. Could you envisage a perfect storm, so to speak, of ecological, economic and security issues coming together to create a new conflict; such as rising sea levels causing mass migration from Bangladesh into India, destabilizing the whole subcontinent and leading to a regional war with Pakistan? 6. What would be your most optimistic hope for how the intertwining threads of the insecurity trap might play out as we move past the first quarter of the 21st Century?

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Melvin Rogers, professor of political science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, & Economics at Brown University, to discuss his recent book The Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, and Freedom in African American Political Thought. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's second would-be assassin, JD Vance's unbridled racism (and the related shutdowns in Springfield, Ohio), the Harris campaign, Boeing's labor strike, Israel's continuing murder of its own citizens, Yemen-Israel conflict, Boar's Head's fiasco, Eric Adam's absurd corruption, and Laura Loomer's budding relationship with Donald Trump, before parsing through JD Vance's claim to have “created” the insane anti-migrant conspiracy around Haitians in Springfield (incidentally, it was actually created by Nazis). Professor Melvin Rogers then joins, first outlining the importance of intellectual history in helping to contextualize the institutions and structures that materially shape our world within the ideas and strains of thought that inspired them, before stepping back to examine the two often contradictory strains of black intellectual thought that dominated how African American intellectual leaders saw the American project's relationship to Black people, be it as a something that is, at its core, about degrading and dominating Black identity, or something that, like all of humanity, is unfinished, malleable, and subject to growth. Professor Rogers then walks Sam through the pre-Civil War evolution of these beliefs, exploring the stories and works of folks like David Walker and Martin Delaney to demonstrate how central the question of the American project was to the push for abolition and Black liberation, with the former presenting a challenge and a disruption to the project while the latter saw it as immutable, best to be abandoned altogether. After reflecting on the model of the American project in the pre-war North, Professor Rogers moves to the post-Reconstruction era, tackling the retrenchment of White Supremacy in the US political system as the resilience of the underlying cultural anti-Black beliefs that the era had failed to address, examining how this issue – one that abolitionists had very much acknowledged – was then addressed by Black intellectuals moving into the 20th century, with folks like Billie Holiday and James Baldwin bringing the contradictions and horrors of American racism to the fore to, once again, challenge the idea of the American project itself, and push white Americans to acknowledge the lingering impact of the ideas that shaped our society. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma quickly parse through the pervasiveness of Eric Adams' corruption and corrosion of New York politics just since he ran for Mayor, before diving deep into the growing controversy around Donald Trump's relationship to far-right activist Laura Loomer, the anti-DEI bigot's refusal to DTR with DJT, and her public beef with MTG where everyone (other than them) won. Trump makes a beautiful snafu, JD Vance tries to address Trump's concept of a healthcare plan by demonstrating his inability to grasp concepts of healthcare itself, and the MR Team discusses Ilhan Omar's reflections on the rhetorical, but materially unsubstantial, divide between Democrats and Republicans over Israel's genocide of Gaza, plus, your IMs! On today's episode of Catalysts for Change, we talk to Todd Rogers. A behavioral scientist and professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. He has dedicated his career to studying the gap between intention and action, helping families effectively support student success, and improving democracy. Our conversation with professor Rogers explores the ins and outs of behavioral science, cost-effective strategies to reduce absenteeism in schools, and the power of persuasion in voting. Behavioral science explains the drivers of behavior, and professor Rogers’ work analyzes how we use what we learn from those drivers to help people follow through on their virtuous intentions.  As referenced in professor Rogers’ Reducing Student Absences at Scale by Targeting Parents’ Misbeliefs paper, 10% of U.S. public school students are chronically absent each year. In a large-scale randomized experiment to reduce absenteeism, professor Rogers tested repeated rounds of mail-based messaging targeting parents of at-risk students. This experiment reduced total absences by 6% and chronically absent students by 10%. Professor Rogers’ Harvard EdCast: Reducing Absences, Capturing Days, highlights that motivating and empowering parents with useful information plays a significant role in student success.  Professor Rogers is a leader in improving democracy. His work focuses on translating insights into voter mobilization. A Pew Research Center analysis showed that millennials continue to have the lowest voter turnout of any age group, where approximately 46% voted in the last presidential election. Through research, he’s discovered that peer pressure can be a motivational tool and yield a better voter turnout.  Professor Rogers reminds us all that being silent is complicit, and creating plans to shift from intention to action is so important. We appreciate his forward-thinking work around why family engagement to improve student attendance, and exercising your right to vote is essential. As mentioned in our conversation, learn more about professor Rogers' company, InClass Today, now, EveryDay Labs, his paper, Poison Parasite, and New York Times bestseller, Nudge.
