Send us Fan MailThis week on the podcast, the fashion designer who is known as the “King of Pants,” Alvin Valley, stops by the show. We talk about where he picked up the moniker, how his first runway show came with a little help from Kathy Hilton, and so much more.*****Named the “King of Pants” by The New York Times, designer Alvin Valley's journey revolves around Miami and, of course, pants. Born in New York City, and educated at the University of Miami, where he studied architecture, Valley's designer roots are firmly planted with Miami fashionistas. Back in 1995, Valley dressed Miami's social scene with his eponymous label, which was sold at his Coconut Grove boutique nestled on Commodore Plaza. Best-known for crafting the best-fitting pants for women, New York socialites beckoned him to the Big Apple to open a SoHo atelier. “In 2000, I packed my bags and left for New York to pursue a wider audience,” Valley says of his move. And a great decision. Valley showed regularly during New York Fashion Week with a presence in over 250 stores worldwide. His doors included well-established retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix, and Fred Segal.Hollywood embraced him, too. “I've always interacted directly with consumers,” Valley says of his business technique. He forged close relationships with his clients, including Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Saldana, Penelope Cruz, Eva Longoria, Cindy Crawford, Madonna, Cher, Cameron Diaz, Celine Dion, Jennifer Garner, and more.In 2007, the Moret Group acquired the Alvin Valley brand, expanding its distribution to Nordstroms, Macy's, Bloomingdale's and even QVC. “I'm going back to the basics and bringing back my amazing pants. I'll be making visits around the U.S. to reconnect with my customers and I can't wait to visit Miami — because my career started there,” Valley says. “I feel like my life is coming full circle.”Check out his designs here: https://alvinvalley.com/Follow him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/alvinvalley/*****If you would like to contact the show Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom©2026 Better To...Podcast with D. Prime Minister Mark Carney announces plans to open up Canada's four largest airports to private investment, and our guest says that will only mean turbulence for passengers and workers. As police raid several 2SLGBTQ+ businesses in Turkey and detain dozens of people, the editor-in-chief of a gay rights magazine there tells us the government is declaring his very existence to be obscene. The NDP candidate who won an unexpected victory in a provincial byelection yesterday says it proves the debate over Alberta sovereignty is hurting the UCP. Mark Carney is talking about a "unique alliance" between Canada and Europe; we'll ask one researcher why she's spent two decades urging the EU to embrace our bit of North America. A 15-year-old boy is pulled from Alaska's frigid Bering Sea after a fishing trip turns fatal. The captain who saved him describes the miracle rescue. When Lillith Caisse heard of an effort to remove public benches in Saskatoon because of cleanliness concerns, she got to work and cleaned them. But she doesn't believe that was the true crux of the argument. The late Bob Mackie spent a long career costuming the stars. Singer Janet Lennon tells us about sharing the stage with Cher in his custom, glittering, show-stopping gowns.

It is a privilege to welcome the fantastic Kara Alloway back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast!  Kara began her media career after graduating from McGill University and landed at Allure in Los Angeles, where she worked as the Assistant West Coast Editor, reporting to editor Linda Wells. Her early work focused on beauty and fashion through a journalistic lens, pairing rigorous cultural reporting with a clear point of view.   She later returned to Canada to become Editor-in-Chief of Ingenue magazine, where the publication experienced record growth in circulation within the Canadian teen market. Alongside my editorial work, I hosted a daily fashion and beauty radio show, interviewing industry leaders including Stella McCartney, Laura Mercier, Phoebe Philo, Zac Posen, Diane von Fürstenberg, Bob Mackie, and Oscar de la Renta.  Reality TV fans first met Kara Alloway on The Real Housewives of Toronto before competing on The Traitors Canada: Season Three. These experiences deepened her understanding of unscripted storytelling, both in front of and behind the camera, and sharpened her interest in how narrative, performance, and public perception intersect.Following her work on camera, Kara moved into unscripted development and production, signing with Electus in Los Angeles and later joining Hangar 56 Media, where I worked in executive production. Her debut novel, MOST HATED, draws from these intersecting worlds of media, performance, and public judgment, marking a shift toward long-form, character-driven storytelling. Across platforms, Kara's work reflects a sustained interest in how stories are shaped, controlled, and contested, particularly for women navigating highly visible public spaces. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kara Alloway gave an in-depth rundown on her experience on The Traitors Canada.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Blues to headlining her own million-dollar Vegas residency, Big Juliet redefined what it meant to be a female entertainer in a male-dominated era. Little Juliet takes listeners behind the scenes of her research journey — discovering a red suitcase of letters, interviewing former collaborators, and piecing together the life of a woman who never waited for permission to shine. The discussion unpacks the discipline, athleticism, and business savvy that made Juliet Prowse one of the highest-paid performers of the 1970s, plus stories of her engagements to Sinatra, her friendship with Elvis, and her unstoppable work ethic that kept her dancing until her final days. This episode is perfect for dancers, musical-theatre artists, and history-minded creatives who want to learn from one of the greats — and be reminded that success is built on grit, artistry, and courage to create your own opportunities.Shownotes:(0:00) – Welcome & introduction to Juliet Prowse interview(3:00) – Little Juliet shares the story behind her famous name(13:18) – Discovering a red suitcase & inspiration to write Born to Dance(16:00) – Big Juliet's early Hollywood years & Vegas debut(21:03) – Athleticism, costuming, and Bob Mackie's extravagant designs(25:39) – Breaking barriers: creating her own Las Vegas show(31:22) – The million-dollar Desert Inn contract & Vegas legacy(36:29) – Life, love & rumors — Sinatra, Elvis, and beyond(41:23) – Performing through illness & leaving a lasting impact(1:03:00) – Lessons for today's dancers: hard work, creativity, & legacyBiography:Juliet Prowse never intended on becoming an author, but when she spotted a little red suitcase in her parents' attic, filled to the brim with articles about her famous aunt, the dancer/entertainer Juliet Prowse, she felt she just had to tell this story. As a seasoned communications professional, Juliet was used to writing, but to ensure the authenticity of her first book, Juliet waded through over 1 000 newspaper articles and letters, largely written by her dancing aunt to her mother (the author's grandmother), and spoke to over 20 people who had performed with Juliet. Known as Big Juliet and Little Juliet in the Prowse household, Little Juliet inherited her aunt's athleticism and became a South African runner, but she was never as graceful as her famous aunt who was born to dance.Juliet has an MBA from the University of Cape Town and a science degree from the University of Nebraska. The Star Wars Holiday Special. Today, on the 46th anniversary of it's airing and Life Day, we're revising the classic, and we've brought along the incredibly talented and lovely hosts of The Mixed Reviews, Gavin and Louie, to help us celebrate this incredibly camp, often absurd, and this surprisingly queer piece of art! Leading up to our return in September, we are doing summer reruns, which is our way of repurposing episodes that with a little configuring (and retitling) might get more listens than they got back in the day. First up: Mama's Family! And next week, you'll be getting a full-fledged new episode about Saved by the Bell! Enjoy! “There Is Nothing Like the Dames” (February 17, 1990) Believe it or not, Mama's Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can't relate to his family back home. It's all the stranger to consider that Mama's Family never did an explicitly queer episode, even with all those Bob Mackie costumes. Read the article in which Bubba actor Allan Kayser talks about his famously tight jeans. Vicki Lawrence sings the original, non-instrumental version of the Mama's Family theme song. But also listen to her disco banger “Don't Stop the Music” and the no. 1 murder mystery pop hit “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Watch the brilliant 1982 TV movie adaptation of the Harper family saga, Eunice. Also watch The Carol Burnett Show's famous “Went With the Wind” sketch. But most importantly watch the original sketch version that led to Mama's Family, when it was just called “The Family.” It made Drew way more sad than sketch comedy usually does.
