Trinity is definitely a dancer to watch, she's going places!Trinity Santoro began her formal training in classical ballet and contemporary dance in Hanover Park, Illinois, at the Faubourg School of Ballet in 2013 under the direction of Watmora Casey. She then spent five years with A&A Ballet under the direction of Alexei Kremnev and Ana Reznik. Santoro also trained at The Royal Ballet School's Summer Intensive in 2018.In May 2022, she performed in Guatemala with A&A Ballet as the title role in Firebird. In September 2022, Santoro joined Kansas City Ballet as a member of KCBII. In 2023 and 2024, she appeared as a guest artist with Southold Dance Theatre, performing the title role in Giselle.Santoro has won numerous awards during her dance career, including winning Gold at the World Ballet Competition in 2017. She is a four-time Youth America Grand Prix Finalist, winning the Grand Prix award in 2022.Santoro joined ABT Studio Company in January 2024, where her repertoire included Amy Hall Garner's Within the Sunset, “Country Gardens” from Twyla Tharp's Brief Fling, and the Diana and Acteon pas de deux. Studying ballet in Chicago and training on scholarship throughout high school at the National Academy of Arts, led her to American Ballet Theatre where she also became a member of the faculty and assistant to Director Patricia Wilde. Ms. Campbell danced at Radio City Music Hall, choreographed for Chicago's “Light Opera Works” and served on the faculty for Lou Conte and the Hubbard Street Dance Company.Ms. Campbell's career spans hundreds of ballets, operas, night club acts, and industrials.In 1998, Ms. Campbell founded Rocky Mountain Ballet Theatre in Missoula, Montana. 2008, prior to the Olympic Games, Ms. Campbell led the RMBT delegation to Beijing, Guilin, Yangshou, Shanghai, and Suzhou China. The tour was a diplomatic and artistic success, returning to China October 2008 to participate in the Beijing Dance Academy International Ballet Competition as a master teacher and coach.RMBT began a tradition of offering performances in Montana for former Senator Max Baucus, visiting Ambassadors and diplomats. RMBT has toured Europe and participated in an official Trade Mission with Senator Max Baucus to both Brazil and Colombia in 2011. Ms. Campbell continues to create ballets with topics relevant to Montana, showcasing and informing the community about the facts of Ebola, Polio, HPV, Dengue Fever , West Nile , and Influenza. The Gates Foundation utilized the Polio Ballet as an educational tool internationally.RMBT was thrilled to represent the USA & Montana in Gala performances and opening ceremony events for the prestigious Salzburg Music Festival & in collaboration with the Salzburg Ballet in Austria. In 2014, RMBT embarked to China on an official USA State Department tour of the Henan and Guangxi Provinces. RMBT was presented in Beijing by the National Ballet of China at the Tianquio Theater and participated in cultural exchanges throughout the three week tour including a memorable day with the Chinese Disabled Performance Troupe as facilitated by USA Ambassador to China Max Baucus and accompanied by his wife Melodee Hanes Baucus.RMBT currently has an active, unprecedented and successful partnership with Lizt Alfonso in Havana, Cuba. Both USA & Cuba arts organizations are working in harmony via the arts and people to people global understanding projects. The next BBB Festival will be in Cuba January 2025 . Alison is a passionate Horton teacher and an avid tap and rhythm dancer and advocate. She discovered her love for the Horton technique as a scholarship student at Jacob's Pillow, working with the great Milton Myers, and has continued studying with mentors Mr. Myers, Kristina Berger, Karen Gayle and other lauded Horton Teachers through the years. She taught the technique on Faculty at The Yard each summer, and as a guest teaching artist at NYU Steinhardt School, Wesleyan Univeristy, Peridance Capezio Center, and STEPS on Broadway. In addition to teaching, Alison dances and performs with The Bang Group and has worked for The Peggy Spina Tap Company, Xodus Dance Collective, Kinodance company among others. She is the current President of the Marymount Manhattan College Dance Advisory Board as well as a member of the Adjunct Faculty. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from said institution with a BFA in Modern Dance and a Minor in Art History. The conversation highlights the challenges and triumphs of a career in dance, emphasizing the value of connection and community in the arts.Robert Battle's journey to the top of the modern dance world began in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Florida where he showed artistic talent early and studied dance at a high school arts magnet program. From there he attended Miami's New World School of the Arts and then the dance program at The Juilliard School where he met his mentor Carolyn Adams. He danced with Parsons Dance from 1994 to 2001, and set his choreography on that company starting in 1998. Mr. Battle founded his own Battleworks Dance Company in 2002 which performed extensively at venues including The Joyce Theater, American Dance Festival, and Jacob's Pillow. A frequent choreographer and artist in residence at Ailey Ailey American Dance Theater since 1999, he set many of his works on the Ailey Company and Ailey II. In July 2011 he was personally selected by Judith Jamison to become Artistic Director of Ailey, making him only the third person to head the Company since it was founded in 1958. During his 12 years as Artistic Director he expanded the Ailey repertory with works by artists as diverse as Kyle Abraham, Mauro Bigonzetti, Ronald K. Brown, Rennie Harris, and Paul Taylor. He also instituted the New Directions Choreography Lab to help develop the next generation of choreographers. In addition to her work in these areas, she leads ContempoCaribe, an ongoing choreography and performance project and is the founder of Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE, an organisational platform for Caribbean dance in the diaspora that spearheads the New Traditions Festival in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Adelphi University's BFA program for Dance, and has presented, performed and taught at major venues including: Queen's Hall (T&T), John F. Kennedy Center, New York Live Arts, Brooklyn Museum, and The Ohio State University. She was an inaugural member of the Dancing While Black Fellowship Cohort 2015/2016, was an awardee of Adelphi University's 2017 - 10 Under 10 program, and a Dixon Place Artist-in-Residence for fall 2017. As a cultural producer and strategist, Candace has worked with the Dance and Performance Institute of Trinidad and Tobago, WIADCA (NY), Sydnie L. Mosley Dances, Renegade Performance Group, and curator Claire Tancons, for the 2019 Sharjah Biennial. Ms. Thompson-Zachery holds an M.A. in Performance Curation from the ICCP program at Wesleyan University and a certificate from the Executive Program in Arts & Culture Strategy at UPenn. with National Arts Strategies. Paloma Herrera was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began her training at the age of seven. In January 1991, having just turned 15 years old, she moved to New York and continued her studies at the School of American Ballet. After only six months, she joined the American Ballet Theatre and, in 1995, became the youngest Principal Dancer in American Ballet Theatre history at age 19. She has appeared in ballets ranging from Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and Swan Lake, to Apollo, The Prodigal Son, and Stepping Stones. She has appeared as Guest Artist with great ballet companies around the world, including New York City Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, Teatro Colon, and National Ballet of Cuba, to name a few. She retired from American Ballet Theatre at the end of November 2015, right before turning 40. Since that, she moved back to her home, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and continued to teach all over the world. In 2016, she wrote her autobiography that was presented at Feria del Libro in 2017. That same year, she also launched her own perfume Paloma Herrera, in 2019 her second fragrance Paloma Herrera Passion, and in 2022 her third fragrance Paloma Herrera Fantasy. In Argentina she received the award: Konex de Platino, Maria Ruanova and distinctions by the Honorable Camara de Diputados de La Nación, Medalla del Bicentenario by the government of the Buenos Aires city, among many others, and since 2012 she is a member of the gallery of popular idols of the Argentine Government House. In 2017, she became the artistic director of Ballet Estable del Teatro Colon, where the company has grown immensely since she arrived. She resigned in 2022. Samantha Géracht performed with Anna Sokolow's Players' Project for eleven years and is a founding member of the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble. In 2017 Ms. Géracht was appointed the ensemble's artistic director. She has toured and taught Sokolow's repertory nationally and internationally, setting Ms. Sokolow's works on professional companies, university dance programs, and solo dance artists, including the Centre de Danse Nationale de Paris, the Boston Conservatory, Williams College, The Ailey School/Fordham University, Loyola Chicago, Franklin and Marshall College, Barnard College, Clarence Brooks, Jennifer Conely, Sandra Kaufman, Kanopy Dance Company and Academy, Ellen Robbins Dance, and Christine Dakin. Ms. Géracht studied technique and composition with Alwin Nikolais and Murry Louis, Humphrey/Limon with Jim May, Betty Jones, Fritz Luden, and Gail Corbin, and Weidman with Deborah Carr. She has taught in the Professional Studies program at the Limon Institute, the Herbert Berghoff (‘HB') Studio, and is on the faculty of the Hoboken Charter School. Ms. Geracht performed the Humphrey/Weidman repertory with Deborah Carr Theater Dance Ensemble and Gail Corbin. She received additional training at the Chautauqua Institution and Pacific Northwest Ballet summer programs. Ms. LaFreniere became an apprentice with NYCB in August 2013 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2014. Jody Sperling is A New York City-based dancer-choreographer,who has created more than 50 works. She is considered the world's leading exponent of the style of early modern dancer and performance technologist Loïe Fuller (1862-1928). Sperling has expanded Fuller's genre into the 21st century, deploying it in the context of contemporary and environmental performance forms. She is currently Eco-Artist-in-Residence at The New York Society for Ethical Culture. Years of working in Fuller's idiom has influenced Sperling's awareness of the body's relationship with the larger environment. In 2014, she participated in a polar science mission—as the first choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker—and danced on Arctic sea ice. Her short film Ice Floe, shot during the expedition, won a Creative Climate Award. Following her Arctic experience, her artistic focus has been on engaging with climate creatively. Sperling earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature film “The Dancer” (Dir. Stephanie Di Giusto, 2016 Cannes Film Festival). She is also featured and created a new work for the Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light (Dirs. Sabine Krayenbuehl and Zeva Oelbaum, premiere 2023 Rome Film Fest). Sperling and company have performed or taught throughout the US and in Bahrain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, and Scotland. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University in Dance and Italian Studies, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and an MFA in Dance from Montclair State University. Sperling and Time Lapse Dance have received commissions from the Vermont Performance Lab with Marlboro College, The University of Wyoming through the NEA American Masterpieces Program, and the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics. Works have been featured in the repertory of The Netherlands' Introdans ensemble and performed by Ice Theatre of New York. Sperling, also a dance writer and scholar, has served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Dance History Scholars (SDHS). Mr. Baca graduated from St. Mary's College of California with a BA, cum laude, in the Performing Arts and was awarded a Fulbright to the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK where he completed his MFA with Merit in Choreography. Mr. Baca's practice-based research produced his thesis titled Choreographing Soldier's Stories to Provoke Empathy in Audiences winning major awards. He has also served as a Junior Research Scientist and data manager for several military research studies. Mr. Baca has worked with the Soldiers' Arts Academy C.I.C and also served on the leadership team that delivered the first UK Veterans Art Festival alongside the 2019 UK Invictus Trials in Sheffield, UK. He has also served as a panelist reviewing awards for Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, US-UK Fulbright candidates, and has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts Dance Panel 2020. Mr. Baca is a 2024 Fellow with the George W. Bush Institute's Stand-To Veteran Leadership Program and has served as a fellow with Veterans in Global Leadership, The Mission Continues, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Román Baca is the Artistic Director of Exit12 Dance Company and a PhD Candidate investigating the military human through the arts at York St. John University in the UK. Román Baca is also the Deputy Project Manager for Bravo 22, a Royal British Legion Funded Recovery Through the Arts Programme and the Project Manager for an arts and recovery pilot project with the Ministry of Defense. Working through the arts with the military Mr. Baca has developed major partnerships and projects with world-class institutions including the Intrepid Museum, The British Museum, the Ministry of Defense, CreatiVets, The Metropolitan Museum of Art among others. Mr. Baca is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer. He has danced in the US for the New Mexico Ballet Company, Connecticut Ballet, the Nutmeg Ballet, Ballet Theatre Company. He has served as movement director for several off-Broadway plays and has taught ballet in London and NYC at Pineapple, Alvin Ailey, Peridance, City Academy, and the United Nations. In 2001 he took a hiatus from dance and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a machine-gunner and fire-team leader in Fallujah, Iraq during the US-led Iraq War. Sonja Kostich brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Through a unique and successful professional trajectory, she now merges her artistic and business experience as an arts leader. Ms. Kostich was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 17 to join American Ballet Theatre from The School of Classical Ballet, the training school for ABT created by Mr. Baryshnikov, consisting of only seven female students and five male students. She later danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the Zurich Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, and in multiple collaborations with opera/theater director Peter Sellars, before co-founding OtherShore, which she co-directed for six years. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. Kostich returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Business Communication from Zicklin School of Business, CUNY Baruch College, where she graduated Salutatorian at the age of 42. Following, she began a full-time position at Goldman Sachs in the Finance Division with a focus on regulatory capital requirements. Simultaneously she obtained an MA in Arts Administration, eventually returning to the dance world, first as the finance manager at Mark Morris Dance Group and then as program manager at New York City Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the 30+ year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley. In October 2022, Ms. Kostich joined Baryshnikov Arts as its new Executive Director. Flink was a member of the Jose Limón Dance Company from 1992 to 1998, among other NYC based dance companies including Creach/Koester Men Dancing, Janis Brenner & Dancers and Nina Winthrop & Dancers. He has been a frequent guest artist with Shapiro & Smith Dance. Flink's work is focused in choreography, theatrical movement direction, contemporary dance and partnering technique, and dance/science collaborations. His work as a dancer, choreographer and director has been featured in the media numerous times. Flink's TED talk in 2011 entitled Dance v. PowerPoint has received media recognition. He has been named to the University of Minnesota Theatre Arts & Dance Department Wall of Note and was featured in Dance Magazine in an article entitled "Flying through Space." Flink graduated in Political Science and Women's Studies from University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts in 1990. He then earned his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in 2001, where he was a Public Interest Law Fellow and a Skadden Fellowship Alternate. Through Black Label, he has created commissions for MADCO (St. Louis, MO), the American Dance Festival Footprints Series (Durham, NC), Same Planet Different World (Chicago, IL) and Company C (San Francisco, CA). He has also created presentations for the 2011 TEDx Brussels, 2012 TED: Full Spectrum (Long Beach, CA), 2013 TEDMED (Washington D.C. and the 2020 TEDx Minneapolis). During Shumka's 50th Anniversary celebrations, he received a Membership with Distinction award from Shumka for his ongoing dedication to the company. Some of her featured roles included Rum and Coca Cola in Paul Taylor's Company B, Eve in Margo Sappington's Rodin, Mis En Vie the Cowgirl in Agnes DeMille's Rodeo, and principal female roles in Jerome Robbins' Fancy Free and The Concert. During this time, Cox served for ten years as the rehearsal assistant of the children's corp for Pennsylvania Ballet's annual production of Balanchine's The Nutcracker. Prior to joining the Pennsylvania Ballet, she danced with BalletMet (Columbus, OH), as a guest artist with Ballet Hispanico (New York, NY), and with the American Repertory Ballet (Princeton, NJ). In this episode of Dance Talk with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Diana Byer, as she shares her life in dance which began from a suggestion made by her pediatrician to exercise. That first class lead to a lifetime career in dance, an art form on which she continues to leave her imprint and is creating a profound and exemplary legacy. Diana discusses her commitment to developing dance artists and her outreach program for homeless and at-risk children. Diana Byer received her principal dance training from Margaret Craske and Antony Tudor. She is the founder of New York Theater Ballet that stages works that are intimate in scale and able to touch audiences in deeply personal ways. Hailed by Dance Magazine as “a miniature American treasure,” NYTB is known for its theatrical inventiveness, high production quality, excellent technique, and accessibility to its audiences. She has been a guest instructor of the Cecchetti Society of America, the Cecchetti Society of Canada (Toronto), Cornell and New York Universities, State University of New York at Purchase, Martha Graham School, and other centers of dance. Ms. Byer conducts master classes in schools and performance settings across the USA and Europe. Ms. Byer received extensive media attention for her ongoing work with homeless and at-risk children, winning special citations from President George Bush, First Lady Hillary Clinton, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the President's Committee on the Arts & the Humanities. The LIFT Community Service program, which provides dance classes, performance opportunities, scholarships, and services for homeless and at-risk children in New York, was initiated at NYTB through her vision and commitment. In 1988, 1990, and 1993, Ms. Byer received the Helen Wieselberg Award of the National Arts Club in recognition for her ongoing work with LIFT. In 1992, Lincoln Center produced, at Alice Tully Hall, a one-hour presentation for children called Dreams On A Shoestring, featuring an original script based on Ms. Byer and LIFT. She received a Humanitarian Hero recognition from Good Housekeeping Magazine for her ongoing work with LIFT and was the 2023 Martha Hill Dance Fund Lifetime Achievement Awardee. The feature-length film LIFT, documenting Ms. Byer's journey of LIFT, was featured in the 2022 Tribeca Festival and recognized with a “Children's Resilience in Film Award” by Shine Global. In December 1996, she was again spotlighted in two features in Dance Magazine. Ms. Byer coached the principals in the Columbia Pictures film, Center Stage. She was a member of the Antony Tudor Centennial Celebration Committee and in 2008 staged Tudor's Judgment of Paris for the American Ballet Theatre Gala at The Metropolitan Opera House. She is a repetiteur for the Antony Tudor Trust and a member of the Board of Directors of the Dance Notation Bureau and The Clive and Valerie Barnes Foundation. In 2010 she assisted Kevin McKenzie in ABT's restaging of Antony Tudor's Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) and staged Agnes de Mille's Three Virgins and a Devil for the Alabama Ballet. In 2011 Ms. Byer restaged Antony Tudor's Soiree Musicale and the dances from Agnes de Mille's Carousel, Oklahoma, and Brigadoon for American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company. Eduardo Vilaro is the Artistic Director & CEO of Ballet Hispánico (BH). He was named BH's Artistic Director in 2009, becoming only the second person to head the company since its founding in 1970, and in 2015 was also named Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Vilaro has infused Ballet Hispánico's legacy with a bold brand of contemporary dance that reflects America's changing cultural landscape. Mr. Vilaro's philosophy of dance stems from a basic belief in the power of the arts to change lives, reflect and impact culture, and strengthen community. He considers dance to be a liberating, non-verbal language through which students, dancers, and audiences of all walks of life and diverse backgrounds, can initiate ongoing conversations about the arts, expression, identity, and the meaning of community. Born in Cuba and raised in New York from the age of six, Mr. Vilaro's own choreography is devoted to capturing the Latin American experience in its totality and diversity, and through its intersectionality with other diasporas. A Ballet Hispánico dancer and educator from 1988 to 1996, he left New York, earned a master's in interdisciplinary arts at Columbia College Chicago and then embarked on his own act of advocacy with a ten-year record of achievement as Founder and Artistic Director of Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Mr. Vilaro received the Ruth Page Award for choreography in 2001; was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2016; and was awarded HOMBRE Magazine's 2017 Arts & Culture Trailblazer of the Year. In 2019, he received the West Side Spirit's WESTY Award, was honored by WNET for his contributions to the arts, and was the recipient of the James W. Dodge Foreign Language Advocate Award. Mr. Angelov is considered by many of his colleagues a key international expert in choreography, especially in philosophy and theory of choreography, as well as traditional and experimental approaches to creative practices. Vladimir Angelov (choreographer, author, lecturer, and executive director) graduated from the National School for Dance Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. He studied philosophy at the University of Sofia and completed his master's degree in dance and choreography at American University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Angelov served as a choreographer at the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., under the artistic direction of Placido Domingo. He also has choreographed for diverse musical, theater, film, and television productions. Mr. Angelov has created original contemporary ballets for companies such as Arizona Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Indianapolis Ballet, Richmond Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Washington Ballet in the United States, as well as Alberta Ballet in Canada, National Ballet of Finland, Ballet, National Ballet of Mexico, Ballet Manila in the Philippines, Tokyo City Ballet in Japan, Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, among others. She offers words of advice for dancers going through difficult times and emphasizes the fulfillment that comes from pursuing a career in dance. Jordan-Elizabeth Long was born in Blacksburg, Va. She began her ballet training with Carol Crawford Smith and continued with Terri Post at the Southwest Virginia Ballet. In high school, she trained in South Florida with Magaly Suarez. Upon completion of high school, she was invited to join the Dutch National Ballet as a demi-soloist. In 2010 she joined the Royal Swedish Ballet, where she was promoted to soloist. During her time in Europe, her repertoire included leading roles in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Sleeping Beauty. Long has been awarded the Gold Medal at the World Ballet Competition USA, been a finalist at the Shanghai International Ballet Competition, and was awarded the Louis Gallodier Prize at the Royal Swedish Ballet. She has appeared in galas and festivals in the USA, Dominican Republic, Russia, Romania, and Hong Kong. Jodee Nimerichter is an arts administrator and film producer and currently serves as the executive director of the American dance Festival. In 2003 she became the festival's associate director, managing dance festivals in South Korea and Russia and building dance exchange programs in South Africa, Poland, Argentina, and the Philippines. Nimerichter was appointed as the director of the American Dance Festival in 2012 and became executive director in 2016. Since 1934, the American Dance Festival has been a recognized leader in modern dance presenting dance performances, and offering educational opportunities and community programs, while maintaining an international reach. She is an artist, painter, sculptor, and now new author. Betti joins me on her very first podcast interview where we talk about her lifelong love of ballet, dance, and art. A life-long stutterer, Betti talks about her constant search for grace in all things she does. She candidly shares that stuttering is seen as a lack of grace, but let me assure you- this beautiful lady is FILLED with grace and exudes it! Betti Franceschi is an artist who has done a double major in school and in life: fine art and ballet. Born in 1934 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she studied ballet with Marguerite de Anguera at Indiana University, Bloomington, fine art with Roger Anliker at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon), and art history with Rosalind Krauss at Hunter College. Her Still Point drawings—vertical-hatched, tightly realistic nude close-ups of dancers' centers—were published in London as a book (The Still Point, 1987) designed by Simon Rendall, which won six nominations to the National Trust Show in London and Frankfurt, and were exhibited at Sadlers Wells in London, the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, New York, and the Philharmonic Center in Naples, Florida, among other venues. Her explosive, almost abstract, zen-calligraphic Signature Drawings (1983–1986) of dancers in motion, have been exhibited in several venues, including the New York State Theater, home of the New York City Ballet. Her early work was mostly portraits, then turned to focus on movement, with figure drawings and paintings, and later sculptures of dancers. In 2016 her interest in gesture brought her to photography for her Ageless Dancers project, a series of elegant, joyous portraits of dancers in the latter years of life. Her work has been reviewed in the London Evening Standard, The New York Times, the Saratogian, the New York City Ballet Playbill, and Dance Magazine. Franceschi lives in New York City. She candidly shares her experience as a teacher and choreographer along with the challenges and rewards of aging in the dance world. Megan shares about her upcoming show, 'Smile Though Your Heart is Aching' taking place at the Mark Morris Dance Center in April 2024. Megan Williams is an independent dance artist, choreographer, teacher and repetiteur, with a BFA from the Juilliard School, and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. Her choreography has been produced by 10 Hairy Legs, DANCE NOW NYC at Joe's Pub and Dance Theater Workshop, and by the Rivertown Artist's Workshop, Barnspace, MIXT Co., Purchase College, Marymount Manhattan College, Connecticut College, and Interlochen Arts Academy. In addition to performing her own work, she can be seen dancing with choreographer Rebecca Stenn and in Netta Yerushalmy's Paramodernities project. She performed and toured internationally in the 1980's with the companies of Laura Glenn, Ohad Naharin, and Mark Haim, among many others. In 1988, she joined the Mark Morris Dance Group, dancing for 10 years, touring worldwide, teaching, and appearing in several films, including Falling Down Stairs (with YoYo Ma), The Hidden Soul of Harmony, The Hard Nut, and Dido and Aeneas. Ms. Williams continues her affiliation with Morris as guest performer, creating the role of Lady Capulet in Morris' 2009 Romeo and Juliet: On Motifs of Shakespeare and dancing in Bijoux at the 2014 Bessie Awards, guest rehearsal director, and guest faculty at the Mark Morris Dance Center. She has staged Morris' work on the Purchase Dance Company, Vassar Repertory Company, Fieldston Dance Company, the Boston Ballet, and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and on students at the Juilliard School, George Mason University, Les Etes de la Danse (Paris), Interlochen Arts Academy, and Cal State Long Beach among others. Ms. Williams has been Morris' assistant in a variety of settings including ballet, Broadway and television. From 2000-2013 she served on the modern dance faculty of the Conservatory of Dance at Purchase College, State University of New York and taught as a guest lecturer at Connecticut College in 2017. She was featured in Dance Teacher Magazine in 2010, 2014, and 2019. She teaches Dance for Parkinson's Disease in Rye, NY, and is on the renowned Dance for PD flagship teaching team. She has recently served on the faculties of Marymount Manhattan College and Hunter College teaching Anatomy for Dancers. She has served on the board of directors of the Martha Hill Dance Fund since 2011 and is proud to have a producing credit on the documentary film Martha Hill: Making Dance Matter. In 2007, Smithsonian Magazine named her American Innovator of the ARTS and Sciences. She is the recipient of the Columbia University Medal of Excellence, an award given each year an alumnus who has demonstrated excellence in their field of work. In 2008, she delivered the keynote address to the graduates of Columbia University's School of General Studies. As a dance educator, Graf Mack most recently taught as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Houston and was a visiting assistant professor at Webster University. She is co-founder of D(n)A Arts Collective, an initiative created to enrich the lives of young dancers through master classes and intensives. Joan Myers Brown (affectionately known as “Aunt Joan” or “JB”) is the founder of The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts in 1960 and The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) in 1970. She serves as honorary chairperson for the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), established in 1991, an organization that she laid the groundwork for in 1988 with the founding of the International Conference of Black Dance Companies. She is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, which bestowed upon her an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts; is a member of the dance faculty at Howard University in Washington, DC; and awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. In May 2015, she received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from The University of Pennsylvania. Listed in Who's Who in America and described as an “innovator and communicator,” Ms. Brown has made significant contributions to arts communities locally, regionally, nationally and throughout the world. Joan Myers Brown's undisputed status as a leader in the national and international arts communities were acknowledged when she was selected to receive the 2012 National Medal of the Arts, the nation's highest civic honor for excellence in the arts. President Barack Obama presented the prestigious honor at a ceremony that took place in July 2013 at the White House. President Obama cited Ms. Brown for carving out “an artistic haven for African American dancers and choreographers to innovate, create, and share their unique visions with the national and global dance communities.” In May 2020, Ms. Brown celebrated two landmark achievements – PHILADANCO!'s 50th year and the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts' 60th year. Join us as we chat about Liz's career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher and the legacy of Martha Hill "whose influence in the world of dance education and performance knew no bounds." Liz Gerring is the Executive Director of Liz Gerring Dance and the chair of the 2024 Martha Hill Awards Gala. Liz was born in San Francisco in 1965 and grew up in Los Angeles where she began studying dance at age 13. Ms. Gerring studied at the Cornish Institute in Seattle, and in 1987 she received a BFA from the Juilliard School. She formed the Liz Gerring Dance Company in 1998 and has been presenting her work in New York City and abroad continuously since that time. Ms. Gerring was awarded the Jacob's Pillow prize in June 2015 and a Joyce Theater Residency the same year. Between 2013-18, Ms. Gerring was commissioned for three works in collaboration with composer Michael J. Schumacher for Peak Performances at the Kasser Theater in Montclair NJ. In 2017/18 she was awarded a City Center Choreographic Fellowship and in 2019 Ms. Gerring was one of five artists to receive the Cage - Cunningham Fellowship from the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Ms. Gerring has been on the faculty of Groove With Me, an after school dance program for girls, since 2018. She lives in New York City and upstate NY with her husband Kirk Radke, her three children, a dog and a cat. “For most of my life I have been engaged in the pursuit of movement for its own sake. THPAC's Black History Month FREE program Saturday, February 24, 4 p.m. Alex Smith Jr. was born in Montgomery, AL. His parents, both veterans of the Montgomery bus boycott, migrated to Brooklyn, NY when he was 3 years old. He has resided in Brooklyn ever since that time. Smith is the Executive Chairman of Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center (THPAC). This association began in 1988, when it's then executive director, Melvin Davis hired Smith to assist in re-branding the image of THPAC. It turned into a long term business relationship with THPAC which continued until the untimely death of Melvin Davis in May of 1995. At this point Smith was asked by the THPAC board to consider becoming the executive director. He accepted the position along with choreographer Marshall Swiney, who became artistic director of THPAC. Under Smith's continuing tenure at THPAC as Executive Chairman, over 300 artists have been presented in performance including: Ron Brown, Camille Brown, George Faison, Louis Johnson, Marlies Yearby, Fred Benjamin, Urban Bush Women, Dance Theater of Harlem and Philadanco, among many others; seven new programming formats have been added; THPAC's Life Time Achievement Awards were established; new relationships with performance venues at Long Island University and the Actors Fund Arts Center were formed; a development dept. for THPAC was established; new in-house works for THPAC entitled Audre Lorde In Motion, Ramp to Paradise and The Gospel According to THPAC were produced; the administrative staff and THPAC boards were restructured; the relocation of THPAC's headquarters was accomplished. Smith is spearheading the production of a documentary on THPAC's 42 years on the dance scene as well as laying out a digital archival structure for THPAC in association with the NYPL at Lincoln Center. On October 18, 2016 Smith was the recipient of the Bessie Award for outstanding service to the field of dance. Smith is a Brooklyn College graduate with advance graphics design/photography studies from the School of Visual Arts. He is a graphics designer and a visual fine artist. Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center (THPAC), the oldest presenting organization in Brooklyn, and Central Baptist Church of NYC will present its FREE Black History Month program on Saturday, February 24, 4 p.m. for the community celebrating Black contributions through music, dance and spoken word in observance with Black History Month. The performance features three bible-themed works by choreographer Walter Rutledge, featuring dancers Amina Konate and Tevin Johnson and narration by James Earl Jones. THPAC and Central Baptist Church of NYC are committed to the remembrance of Black history and to uplifting of African Americans. By reaching back through this program, we can envision and grasp a healing future for our community and all of humanity. Audiences, the church congregation and larger community will experience a performance about faith, perseverance and the collective strength communities have when joined together. Jamel has appeared on Public Television's American Talent in which he was presented The Teacher Recognition Award, during the Presidential Scholars in the Arts Committee at The Kennedy Center, and has been featured in publications such as Essence Magazine, The New York Times, The Seattle Times and The Daily News. His work has been staged by the Actors Theater Workshop, The NYC Department of Parks, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, the Paramount Theatre and The Martha Graham School. Mr. Gaines serves as the director of St. Paul's Eldad Medad Danced Ministry. His work at St. Paul's includes “He Got Up”, the commemoration of the African Holocaust and the acclaimed “Black Nativity” for which he won an Obie Award. She is the recipient of a Dance Teacher Magazine 2021 Dance Teacher Award and a 2023 Women of Distinction Award Recipient. Her work has been featured on Netflix, Lifetime, BET, MTV, NBC, and VH1. In 2013, Karisma joined STOMP. In 2016, Family Circle magazine coined her a “Local Hero,” and Lifetime TV called her “a Female Entrepreneur to Watch.” In 2017, she won the “Power Women in Business” award for her work as Artistic Director/Founder of AbunDance Academy. A recent Summa Cum Laude Dance MFA graduate of Hunter College, she also Guest Teaches Dance/Culture at Hunter. A Guest Teaching Artist at The Juilliard School, LaGuardia High School, Hunter College, Ballet Tech, and Broadway Dance Center, she was also the choreographic apprentice of David Byrne's American Utopia and choreographer for COMMON's Music Video, "When We Move." Jay is dedicated to providing affordable classes and opportunities to perform for young aspiring dancers of color. She conceived, co-wrote, and co-directed the 2022 short film C.R.O.W.N., which tells the story of a young Brown ballerina who has to tame her hair into submission for the biggest audition of her life. The film was inspired by Jay's own attempts to fit into a ballet world with her thick, curly hair and Afro-Latina curves. Crown sparked an important conversation around embracing one's differences and loving one's hair texture and skin tone in ballet. Jay also directed the 2021 short film Just Like YOU to inspire young people to love themselves regardless of their skin color, hair texture, body shape, or background. Gabriel's work has been featured at Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music, the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C., Alice Tully Hall, the Clark Theater at Lincoln Center, MMAC, and the Lambs Theater. Gabriel is also the Artistic Director for TranscenDanceGroup, whose TDG Holocaust Awareness performance has reached school students throughout the tri-state area.
