Feeling frustrated after a competition because your dancer didn't place how you expected? Or maybe you've found yourself wondering, “How is that trick allowed in novice?”—then this episode is for you. This week, Brittany dives deep into one of the most debated (and misunderstood) aspects of dance competitions: skills vs. levels. ✨ Just because a dancer throws a back tuck or an aerial doesn't mean they belong in the advanced category. ✨ Not every trick is executed with advanced technique—even if it's flashy. ✨ Not all studios structure their teams the same way, and that impacts levels too. ✨ Most importantly: trust that competitions handle things behind the scenes. Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen. What You'll Learn:Why it's not always "cheating" when a high-skill trick shows up in a novice or intermediate routineWhat judges really look for: execution, not just tricksThe problem with comparison and how it damages your child's experienceWhat integrity and maturity at competition really look like (hint: it's not ranting on Facebook)Support the showGot a question or story you'd like to share? In this episode, professor and choreographer Silvana Cardell contextualizes the work of the Mimulus Dance Company through the lens of adjacent histories and influences: Cardell from Argentina and Mimulus from Brazil.Watch a clip of Por Um Fio:https://danceinteractive.jacobspillow.org/mimulus-dance-company/por-um-fio/Insights and influences, Silvana Cardell:In Buenos Aires, Cardell learned under the mentorship of Chilean choreographer Ana Itelman and grew up attending Oscar Araiz's performances. From them, she understood what it took to become an artist. Their work was influenced by German expressionism's emotional depth and American dance's physicality. Iteman and Araiz were former students of German soloist dancer Dore Hoyer and American choreographer Miriam Winslow, who was strongly connected to Jacob Pillow, first as a Denishwan student in 1932 and later returning in the 1940s to perform her own work. These influences, along with a strong foundation in contemporary dance forms, ballet training, and traditional Argentinean dance forms, determined the quality of Cardell's early work, which connects to the Mimulus Dance Company's style. Pursuing artistic growth, influenced by teacher Ana, who had been faculty at Bard College, Cardell moved between Buenos Aires and the U.S. throughout the late 1980s, first as a student at The University of the Arts, finally settling in the U.S. in 2004 after graduating with an MFA at Temple University. Her educational journey in Philadelphia led to work with key figures in the dance community, such as Manfred Fishbeck and Merian Soto, mentors and collaborators who fostered a creative dialogue that extends into her creative work, today.

What does it take to stand out as a podcaster anyways? Is the craze for this new medium truly justified for the world of dance? Like in every other sector, the field of dance-related podcasts is now beyond saturated. Yet, that didn't discourage me from starting a show, completing a full season and then embarking on a whole new one right after! It starts with your message and the value it brings to listeners who are looking to learn something from you which they cannot do elsewhere - which I did through one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, The Dance Podcast.Lauren Ritchie is the host and one of the earliest pioneers of dance podcasting, starting as far back as 2016. After a highly competitive career as a dancer, having trained in ballet, jazz, tap and lyrical styles, she transitioned into a coach, educator, writer and adjudicator for part two of her glittering career. Recognizing the lack of mental skills training in dance, Lauren created programs dedicated to educating and empowering dancers' mental health as well as fitness to optimize their training, subsequently transforming her experiences into 5 seasons totaling 160 episodes on her podcast. Continuing a brand new season and month of Dance Media, this episode explores the role of podcasts as performing arts media and what it takes to excel as a dance podcaster.
