The tenth installment of Fresh Immigrants, Rotten Fascists introduces us to the Gangoli family - first generation Indian immigrants to America. Familiar faces Irrfan Khan and Tabu play the parents, but the big marketing angle was Kal Penn's dramatic turn as their son, he of the multiple names throughout the movie. THE NAMESAKE, based on a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri, directed by Mira Nair, was certainly an important step in Penn branching out from his Harold and Kumar persona, but it's also a gentle, heartfelt portrayal of what it's like to have two homelands.Thank you for checking this new project out, whether you are a long-time Contrarians fan or someone who's just trying to listen to people talking positively about immigrants and negatively about fascism. Namesake has its West Coast premiere at the Doxa Festival this month. The film documents an ongoing conversation between the Tla'amin Nation and the city commonly known as Powell River over a proposal to reclaim the city's name, which is derived from a recent colonial official. We speak with Dr. Evan Adams, co-director of Namesake.

Ruth's grandmother's full name was Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson. When the US Post Office rejected "Half Moon" for the post office there circa 1890, Jotham Goodell came up with an alternate: Lebam, which was his three or four-year-old daughter Mabel's name spelled backward. In this conversation, Ruth Leonard brings her grandmother to life through memories of Mabel and of the community of Lebam. Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson, who gets no more than a sentence or two in Washington state placename books as Lebam's namesake, is rendered by her granddaughter as a three-dimensional human being. This is an encore presentation of a program first broadcast in 2023.  In 2000, Jhumpa Lahiri's debut short story collection, The Interpreter of Maladies, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Lahiri has gone on to write other critically acclaimed books, including The Namesake, Unaccustomed Earth, and The Lowland. Her collection Roman Stories centers around Rome, not as a setting, but as a protagonist. Translated from Italian, the stories capture Rome as both a metropolis and a monument, multi-faceted and metaphysical, suspended between past and future – and prove that Lahiri is now master of form in her adopted language. On October 13, 2023, Jhumpa Lahiri came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco for an onstage conversation with filmmaker Peter Stein.
