    Ivy Insights

The Wheel Talk podcast is an absolute gem for anyone interested in pottery. Hosted by Ryan and Becca, this podcast is a delightful blend of informative discussions, helpful tips, and entertaining banter. As someone who has recently discovered the world of pottery, I am hooked on their conversations and find myself eagerly awaiting each new episode. Their passion for pottery shines through in every discussion, making it incredibly enjoyable to listen to.

One of the best aspects of The Wheel Talk podcast is the wealth of knowledge that Ryan and Becca share with their listeners. They provide valuable insights into various aspects of pottery, including techniques, business strategies, selling tips, and much more. Their willingness to openly discuss their own experiences and failures makes the podcast relatable and inspiring. I have learned so much from their episodes on selling at art shows, pricing pottery, and even the chemistry of clay. It's like having two experienced potters as friends who are always ready to offer guidance.

Another highlight of The Wheel Talk podcast is the chemistry between Ryan and Becca. They have a natural rapport that makes their conversations engaging and entertaining. Their friendly banter adds a lighthearted touch to each episode, making it feel like you're listening to a conversation between friends. Not only do they share information about pottery, but they also discuss their own lives and experiences in a way that makes you feel connected to them.

If there is one downside to The Wheel Talk podcast, it would be that occasionally the episodes can be quite long. While this might not be an issue for everyone, some listeners may prefer shorter episodes or find it challenging to dedicate a lot of time to each episode. However, I personally enjoy the longer format as it allows for more in-depth discussions and covers a wide range of topics.

In conclusion, The Wheel Talk podcast is an incredible resource for both experienced potters and beginners like myself. Ryan and Becca's genuine passion for pottery, combined with their generosity in sharing their knowledge, makes this podcast a must-listen for anyone interested in the craft. Their relatable and entertaining conversations make it feel like you're part of a community of potters, and I can't recommend it enough. Whether you're looking for tips, inspiration, or simply some company while working in the studio, The Wheel Talk podcast is the perfect companion.

Thanks for your continued contribution to the podcast!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- I have a show in December and I'm thinking of backing out because they want me to donate 50% of my proceeds to a charity. The show is for the social action committee of a local church. That seems like a pretty steep request from an artist who doesn't really make that much to begin with. What are your thoughts on this? @jelo.designs- Hey Becca & Ryan, I love the podcast & have learned so much from you guys and your guests! Question: While I have two clay suppliers nearby, I haven't found a local clay that I am absolutely in love with or that fits my glazes without sounding like wind chimes when opening the kiln. After hearing your interviews with Link from KY Mudworks I decided to give some of their clays a try and of course fell in love with them. Those pieces happen to be the pieces that are selling at local markets as well. My question is, do you learn to work with the local clay you have available, or do you just suck it up and pay for the clay to be shipped in? Price reference: Local clay is about $14 per 25#bag and shipping the KY Mudworks is about $36 per 25# + hatred from my mail delivery person. @lucy.s.ceramicsSponsorsL&L Kilns - The durable kiln that potters trust to fire evenly & consistently. The discussion ensues and provides some context to how both Ryan & Becca manage their businesses, relationships, and the world around them from this perspective. Enjoy! Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- Wholesale question? Is there a typical time range ur stores send u payment after you send them ur goods? We have a couple we really need to hound. We find it so counter to what they preach, “look at us, we are a store that supports artists.” But then don't pay us promptly. We do depend on their orders though and don't want to loose their business. @the_justuscollective- When you deliver to your wholesale/ consignment customers, do you charge shipping and if you do, at what rate? #263 - Cohesion vs. creativity in your pottery

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2024 108:39

Ryan & Becca tackle a listener question today about the importance of having a cohesive style in pottery. Two Sisters Pottery includes a sibling duo creating work in varying styles today. We discuss the balance between creative freedom and branding, offering insights on how diverse styles can coexist within a single pottery business. Thanks for listening!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- I've been doing pottery for several years now, but just got into doing it full time and making larger scale works (8lb+). I noticed when I have days I'm throwing all day that my lower back is just completely spent. Even just bending over the sink is really difficult to maintain balance at the end of a throwing day. I have very, very, very minor scoliosis which might also be contributing to this. I don't really notice this on days I'm throwing small pots, but only when I'm centering larger amounts. Do you have any tips, tricks, or even certain exercises to minimize physical issues like this? I know Becca has mentioned she has carpel tunnel. I do wrist stretches but am not sure how to position myself so I don't have that much back pain (other than configuring a standing wheel). I'm only in my mid twenties and want to continue doing this for a long time @Hannahsceramicstudio- I'm wanting to know your opinion on having a cohesive look throughout your work. I've been doing pottery for over 3 years now and still in love with all the techniques that are possible. Maybe there is more cohesiveness than I think but how important is that for a business do you think? This is my sister and my page as she also does pottery. Her style is much more whimsical and there's also not many of her works as she doesn't do this nearly as much as I do. Thanks for answering!
