On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Jory Avner! Jory describes his music as lyrical, narrative, sentimental with transitions into angry, expressive rock music. Jory speaks about how he uses music and performing as a form of therapy and how he tends to escape from everything going on around him when he begins performing for a live audience. Pipeman and Jory talk about how if the artist can get lost in their own music, the audience will never be able to. Jory share how he writes for himself and he always makes music that he wants to hear as opposed to aiming to create big hits that he doesn't even enjoy performing. By blending highly stylized lyricism and guitar with synth/rock soundscapes he strives to create an atmosphere that is deeply textured, thought-provoking, introspective, and yet succinct in terms of narratives that make you want to dance. Jory's latest single ‘Plaything' is a departure from his traditionally faster-paced tunes: it showcases his contemplative style as well as reflects the collective challenges of the last few years. Beautiful, honest and powerfully emotional, ‘Plaything' wastes no time getting right to the heart with immediately relatable lyrics and ballad-esque instrumentals to support. “Plaything” was mixed, recorded and produced by Dean Dichoso.Watch the official lyric video for “Plaything” on YouTube: PLAYTHING FULL BANDhttps://youtu.be/-7KIk0wEiwUPLAYTHING Acoustichttps://youtu.be/QaVF_3iy0Gw"Working on this new single and upcoming EP has really been a transformative journey,” Jory says. “The last few years have really thrown a lot at me, and at us all really, and the evolution of my song writing has followed suit in a lot of unexpected ways that I'm feeling really excited about." Dean, his producer, has been vital to bringing about Jory's new vision for his music and his work. “He's been a mentor, and even more so, a friend to me during these wild times and I'm truly ecstatic for what we've been cooking up together." Dean agrees that working with Jory has been inspirational. “After listening to Jory for 2 years before I got to produce this single - it was nice to be able to unlock a lot of new types of creativity and song writing within him and watch it materialize. We had a great time expanding his sound into the realm of ambient sounds and finding ways to still bridge high production and the spirit of indie folk into the song.” Fans would describe his work as patient, moody but at times high energy. “The stories he tells,” says one fan on Discord, “are amongst some of the most heartfelt and honest ever written. His voice exudes the passion in which his art form has blessed many fans and friends." Another fan hits the mail on the head describing Jory's music: "Whether I'm enjoying a summer road trip or need something to cry to, Jory's music always brings strong emotions that suit the occasion." Another fan echoes those sentiments: “Jory's singing and song writing has a way of finding that one spot in your heart you didn't know needed some attention. In just a few words he can grab your attention and hold it forever.”“Jory Avner is a true songwriter in every sense of the word – a craftsman of dynamic, intricate narratives and soothing soundscapes, delivered with smoky vocals that lie somewhere between Bob Dylan, Spoon, and Passenger,” says Adela Skowronski of TheUnderbelly Hours. Jory's influences indeed include Bob Dylan, as well as Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Conor Oberst, Jason Isbell, Gillian, Welch, Iron and Wine and Wilco. “By far the words are what I focus on the most when it comes to writing or listening to a song,” Jory says. “I guess I hope people walk away from my songs with their mind sort of activated, and in the best case scenario maybe feel a little moved. I always love when songs do that for me.”About Jory:Jory Avner is a solo singer-songwriter based out of Chicago, Illinois. By blending highly stylized lyrical storytelling that's often confessional in nature, and guitar with harmonica and synth/rock soundscapes, he strives to create an atmosphere that is deeply textured, thought-provoking, introspective, and yet succinct in terms of narratives. Originally born in Ohio, Jory's music is a moving combination of melancholic and bittersweet, with soft-spoken but hard-hitting lyrics that will grab your soul and never let go. "It's kinda of a cliche thing to be like, 'oh I started goin' and it wasn't as good'-but ever since then, I feel it's gotten more and more to like the general pop, EDM, hip-hop genre." says General Manager of Radio DePaul, Marty O'Connell. Lollapalooza has a history of selling out passes in under 10 minutes. However, the past two years have sturggled with ticket sales. Last years fest had tickets avaliable day of. This year they haven't even sold out-nearly two months after the line-up announcement. So what's Lolla doing wrong? Or it could be we as music fiends are too overwhelmed by the plethora of music festivals to choose from. Beyond the Music founder Connor Skelly says, "This is both a good and bad thing about Lollapalooza, and Bonaroo and Coachella. All these large festivals that appeal to a wide range of audiences," he begins, "It's great that they do that, it gets a lot of people together to appreciate music, but I think it also works to their detriment." So, what's the future for music festivals like Lolla? Tune-in to find out! We also are doing our VERY FIRST TICKET GIVEAWAY! Thanks to our friends at Out of Context/Get2TheGig!
