This month, we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the “shot heard round the world” that ignited the Revolutionary War. But before those battles, and before the Revolution became a war for independence, it was a movement—a fight to secure more local control over government. And no one worked harder to transform that movement into a revolution than Samuel Adams. To help us investigate, we're revisiting our conversation from Episode 350 with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Stacy Schiff, author of The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams. She discusses Adams' background, religion, and intellectual development, including the influences that Greco-Roman history, the Bible, and Enlightenment thinkers had upon his life and political thought. Schiff discusses Adams' rise to prominence in the 1760s and ‘70s, how he and his fellow American revolutionaries viewed the British Crown's policies, and how they transformed themselves from subjects of Great Britain to independent citizens of an American republic. Schiff touches on Adams' ideas about republicanism and slavery, and notes what K-12 schoolchildren today should remember about a man who was a paragon of austere republican self-government based on principled civic virtue. Ms. Schiff closes the interview with a reading from her book, The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams.

December 16, 1773. Samuel Adams sits in a crowded meeting of American colonists at Boston's Old South Meeting House. He's watching small groups of men slip quietly out the door. Once outside, the men don disguises and make their way toward three ships moored in the harbor – each weighted down with chests of valuable British East India tea. The men climb aboard, tear open the chests and dump the tea in the water. Cheers fill the winter night. Back at the meeting, Samuel Adams waits. There's nothing directly tying him to this radical act of rebellion … but few doubt he's behind it. How did a chronic underachiever help light the fuse of the American revolution? And why has this important Founding Father largely been forgotten? Special thanks to our guest, Stacy Schiff, author of The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams. Hosted on Acast. Stacy Schiff dazzles us again, this time with the forgotten story of an American original. In her distinctive voice, Schiff restores Samuel Adams to the pantheon of the most influential Founding Fathers on the 300th anniversary of his birth—and at a time when democracy appears especially fragile. Thomas Jefferson once asserted that if there was one leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man.” Without him, his cousin John said, “the true history of the American Revolution can never be written.” A humble hero, a man of sterling integrity and deep faith yet a failed businessman who was adrift for the first act of his life, Samuel Adams stands among the most successful revolutionaries of all time. But despite his celebrated status among his contemporaries, he has largely vanished from the record. Convinced that liberty and self-determination were essential rights, he led an ingenious, egalitarian campaign of civil resistance against England. Organizing boycotts and massaging the news, churning out propaganda under an army of pseudonyms—some of them newly uncovered by Schiff—Adams arguably did more to bring about independence than any other Founder. Stacy Schiff is the author of Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov), winner of the Pulitzer Prize; Saint-Exupéry, a Pulitzer Prize finalist; A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, winner of the George Washington Book Prize and the Ambassador Book Award; Cleopatra: A Life, a New York Times Top Ten Book of the Year and winner of the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography; and, most recently, The Witches: Salem, 1692. Schiff has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. A NYPL Library Lion, a recipient of an Arts and Letters Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, she has contributed to the New York Times, The New Yorker, and the New York Review of Books, among other publications. What do you call a veterinarian that can only take care of one species? A physician.  As you just heard from our guest today, Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, who is a physician, who'll share how a species-spanning approach to health can improve medical care of the human animal — particularly when it comes to mental health.  Dr. Natterson-Horowitz is co-author of the amazing book and creator of the TV series, Zoobiquity, Zoobiquity explored how animal and human commonality can be used to diagnose, treat, and heal patients of all species.  Infertility, lung cancer, anxiety, obesity, eating disorders, heart attacks, and PTSD are common in humans, but they are not uniquely human disorders. Concerns about the diseases associated with animals have encouraged researchers around the world to try to bridge the gap between animal and human medicine. Drawing on the latest in medical and veterinary science—as well as evolutionary and molecular biology—it's now understood that animals and humans suffer from many of the same health problems. Practitioners and researchers are actively comparing the human and veterinary approaches to shared ailments and transforming medical practices and research in the process. Through observation and research studying animals in natural settings, cardiologist and evolutionary biologist and Smithsonian Associate Barbara Natterson-Horowitz has uncovered evolved adaptations for some of these conditions. She explores how our vulnerability to illnesses has its roots in our ancient evolutionary past and how understanding physical and mental illness in wild animals—from depression and self-harm to cardiac disease—has the potential to make us physically and mentally healthier humans.  Barbara Natterson-Horowitz will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates via zoom very soon, but we've got Dr. Natterson-Horowitz today to answer our questions and give you a glimpse into her upcoming presentation at Smithsonian Associates, titled:  "It's Possible to Be Sick as a Dog: Linking Human and Animal Health" My thanks to Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz.  Dr. Natterson-Horowitz will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates via Zoom coming up, and the title of Dr. Natterson-Horowitz's presentation at Smithsonian Associates is  "It's Possible to Be Sick as a Dog: Linking Human and Animal Health"   Please check our website for more details.   My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show.  My thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience on radio and podcast.  Please be well, and be safe, which I'm telling you each show, followed by my message to eliminate assault rifles. And I was looking for someone who had the courage of his convictions, to stand up and take an unpopular stand, which is something that takes a very long time for anyone to do in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1692, when it was very dangerous to take that stand. As it is dangerous again in the 1760s. And Adams very much fit that description. The more time I spent with him, the more time I was convinced and remain convinced that he teaches you that one person can actually make a difference and that ideas actually matter.” This week on the podcast, Lewis H. The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams - Stacy Schiff The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates author interview series on radio and podcast.   I'm Paul Vogelzang, and for all of us in The Not Old Better Show audience who love American Revolutionary War history, today's Smithsonian Associates author interview is just for you. Thank you so much for listening.  We've got a great guest today, whom I'll introduce in just a moment…But, quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 669th episode, and I spoke to comedian and host of the popular podcast “Carson Podcast,” funny man himself, Mark Malkoff.   Two weeks ago, in another great interview, I spoke to  Smithsonian Associate and author, researcher and scientist, Dr. Sian Harding, who's written the new book, The Exquisite Machine, The New Science of the Heart.   Wonderful stuff…If you missed those shows, you can go back and check them out along with my entire back-catalog of shows, all free for you there on our website, NotOld-Better.com…and if you leave a review, we will read it at the end of each show…leave reviews on Apple Podcasts for us. Thomas Jefferson once asserted that "for depth of purpose, zeal, and sagacity, no man in Congress exceeded, if any equaled Sam Adams." John Adams called him "the most elegant writer, the most sagacious politician, and celebrated patriot perhaps of all." But in spite of his celebrated status among America's Founding Fathers as a revolutionary leader, Samuel Adams' life and achievements have been largely overshadowed in the history books. In a spirited conversation today with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff who'll be appearing at Smithsonian Associates with show favorite Rebecca Boggs Roberts, we will examine this often-overlooked US Constitution founder, Samuel Adams, following his transformation from the listless, failing son of a wealthy family into the tireless, silver-tongued revolutionary who rallied the likes of John Hancock and John Adams behind him. Including a wonderful reading by Stacy Schiff, from chapter 2 in her new book:  ‘The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams.' And ‘A Voice in the Darkness…A Knock on the Door.'   That, of course, is our guest today, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff, reading from her new book, ‘The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams.'  Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associate Stacy Schiff.   We have another 5***** Review from: Deborah J. Evans 5*****  10/16/2022 Addictive all episodes "I have heard this show many times...Every time something new, I've learned much, some old unforgettable moments. Always wrapped in a new way...
