Well im back! I found it fitting to interview one man who inspires me and his work is therputic. Richard Thieme is a Defcon speaker, former clergy, but above all he delivers the messages people need to hear. Sitting in treatment with other veterans and sharing Mobious a Memoir with close friend Randy we had something to share, something to talk about to lift bandaids. I spent numerous nights laying in bed wondering whats next in life while reading Mobious. I left it behind to hopefully help other people through their journey through the veil.

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a thought-provoking episode featuring Richard Thieme. He is an author/professional speaker who addresses challenges posed by new technologies, how to redesign ourselves to meet these challenges, and creativity in response to radical change. His speaking addresses “the human in the machine,” technology-related security and intelligence issues as they come home to our humanity. For the past 30 years, his speaking, writing and consulting has focused on security, intelligence, IT, and empowering people who live on the sharper edges of life and work. His books include: "UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry" (2013). When a senior at the NSA told him, "the only way you can tell the truth is through fiction," he heeded his advice, and four novels and dozens of stories later, he completed his magnum opus, the Mobius Trilogy: "Mobius: A Memoir," a novel about an intelligence professional that is receiving great reviews, "The Mobius Vector: The Long Road Home," and the third book in the trilogy, "Mobius: Out of Time."

Hacking the Human Body/brain: Identity Shift, the Shape of a New Self, and Humanity 2.0 Richard Thieme Author and Professional Speaker, ThiemeWorks This presentation is beyond fiction. Current research in neuroscience and the extension and augmentation of senses is proceeding in directions that might sound to a twentieth century mind like science fiction. Progress is rapid but unevenly distributed: Some is directed by military, intelligence and corporate interests but beyond their concerns, we can discern the future shape of human identity itself in nascent forms. The human body/brain is being hacked to explore radical applications for helping, healing, and harming this and future generations. Some can be done in garage-hacking style. The presenter, in fact, recently had lenses in both eyes removed and replaced with artificial ones engineered for the vision he wanted, a now-trivial surgery. The reach of new technologies promises an even more radical transformation in what it means to be human. One area of research is the recovery of memories, the deletion of emotional charges from memories, the removal of specific memories, the alteration of the content of memories, and the implantation of new memories. Another seeks to read the mind at a distance and extract information. Another explores the use of genomes to understand and replicate thinking, feeling, and behavior patterns. Another implements mind-to-mind communication, using neuroscience to understand brains best suited for remote viewing as well as implants and non-invasive technologies that control the electromagnetic energies of the brain to enable psychokinesis, clairvoyance and telepathy. Augmentation of human abilities is being achieved by splicing information from sensors integrated with existing neurological channels. To feel the magnetic field of the earth, see the infrared and ultraviolet parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, discern the yaw and pitch of airplanes, see and hear by going around our eyes and ears -- all this means we will experience the “self” in new ways. Thieme concludes with quotes from remote viewer Joe McMoneagle, astronaut Edgar Mitchell, and his new novel FOAM to suggest the shape of the mind of the future. If you're 20 years old, you have at least a century of productive life ahead of you, so you had better be on board with the shape of your future selves. :-) Richard Thieme is an author and professional speaker focused on the challenges posed by new technologies and the future, how to redesign ourselves to meet these challenges, and creativity in response to radical change and identify shift. He has explored issues raised in this DEF CON 23 presentation for 20 years but raises his game to outline the shape of the future self, defining it as a system open to modification and hacking, giving the term “biohacking” new and compelling meaning. His column, "Islands in the Clickstream," was distributed to subscribers in sixty countries before collection as a book in 2004. When a friend at the NSA said after they worked together on intelligence issues, "The only way you can tell the truth is through fiction," he returned to writing short stories, 19 of which are collected in “Mind Games.” He is co-author of the critically extolled “UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry,” a 5-year research project using material exclusively from government documents and other primary sources, now in 50 university libraries. A recently completed novel FOAM explores the existential challenges of what it means to be human in the 21st century. “The UFO History Group” is exploring a second volume and Thieme is selecting “the best of” his diverse writings for “A Richard Thieme Reader” and writing more fiction. Thieme's work has been taught at universities in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States, and he has guest lectured at numerous universities, including Purdue University (CERIAS), the Technology, Literacy and Culture Distinguished Speakers Series of the University of Texas, and the “Design Matters” lecture series at the University of Calgary. He keynoted a conference on metadata this spring for the U of Texas-San Antonio. He addressed the reinvention of “Europe” as a “cognitive artifact” for curators and artists at Museum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland and keynoted “The Real Truth: A World’s Fair” at Raven Row Gallery, London. He has spoken for the National Security Agency, the FBI, the Secret Service, the US Department of the Treasury, Los Alamos National Labs and has keynoted “hacker” and security conferences around the world. "It's the only way you can tell the truth," he said. Three dozen published short stories and one novel-in-progress (FOAM) later, one result is "Mind Games," published in 2010 by Duncan Long Publishing, a collection of stories that illuminates “non-consensual realities:” the world of hackers; the worlds of intelligence professionals; encounters with other intelligent life forms; and deeper states of consciousness. A recent scholarly study of “The Covert Sphere” by Timothy Melley documents the way the growth and influence of the intelligence community since World War 2 has created precisely the reality to which that NSA veteran pointed. The source of much of what “outsiders” believe is communicated through novels, movies, and television programs. But even IC “insiders” rely on those sources as compartmentalization prevents the big picture from coming together because few inside have a “need to know.” Thieme asked a historian at the NSA what historical events they could discuss with a reasonable expectation that their words denoted the same details. “Anything up to 1945,” the historian said with a laugh – but he wasn’t kidding. Point taken. This fascinating presentation illuminates the mobius strip on which all of us walk as we make our way through the labyrinth of security and intelligence worlds we inhabit of necessity, all of us some of the time and some of us all of the time. It discloses why “post-modernism” is not an affectation but a necessary condition of modern life. It addresses the words of an NSA intelligence analyst who responded to one of Thieme’s stories by saying, “most of this isn’t fiction, but you have to know which part to have the key to the code.” This talk does not provide that key, but it does provide the key to the key. It also throws into relief everything else you hear – whether from the platform or in the hallways – inside this conference. And out there in the “real world.” “Nothing is what it seems.” Richard Thieme is an author and professional speaker focused on the challenges posed by new technologies and the future, how to redesign ourselves to meet these challenges, and creativity in response to radical change and identify shift. His column, "Islands in the Clickstream," was distributed to subscribers in sixty countries before collection as a book in 2004. When a friend at the NSA said, "The only way you can tell the truth is through fiction," he returned to writing stories, 19 of which are collected in “Mind Games.” He is co-author of the critically acclaimed “UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry,” a 5-year research project using material exclusively from government documents and other primary sources, now in 50 university libraries. Speeches based on the book have been given for HITB-KL, an FBI/Infragard “superconference,” the Ryerson Astronomical Society at the University of Chicago, the Chicago Astronomical Society at Adler Planetarium, and dozens of libraries. A novel, FOAM, is in progress and “A Richard Thieme Reader” will be published soon. His work has been taught at universities in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States, and he has guest lectured at numerous universities, including Purdue University (CERIAS), the Technology, Literacy and Culture Distinguished Speakers Series of the University of Texas, the “Design Matters” lecture series at the University of Calgary, “The Real Truth: A World’s Fair” at Raven Row Gallery, London, and as a Distinguished Lecturer in Telecommunications Systems Management at Murray State University. Non-state and state intelligence are converging in a context of fluid boundaries. It is increasingly difficult to know who is inside and who is not. Creating a trusted network does not resolve the most critical security problems because those problems begin at the interface of the network and the human user. The identity and intention of that human user is critical, but that is often what is most difficult to discern. This emergent world of ambiguous boundaries and multiple identities challenges our models and descriptions of the playing field. Even with a program, we can't always tell the players, because both players and program are morphing. And it's worse than that: the ethical guidelines of the past, rooted in religious systems thousand of years old, are going through the looking-glass, too, along with the structures of spirituality and religion. Identity-shift applies to God and Self as well as the social and cultural structures in which they are embedded. This speech confronts the transformation of the structures in which we live, identifies some consequences of identity-shift, and distinguishes the business of security from the myths of the security business. It points to new ways to organize our lives that complement rather than replace traditional methods of defending electronic and human networks. About the speaker: "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." - Frederick Nietzsche*Richard Thieme has been hearing the music for a long time. His track record includes hundreds of published articles, dozens of published short stories, one published book with more coming, several thousand speeches, and – in a former incarnation - hundreds of sermons, all original, all unique. In the nineteen eighties, Thieme began writing about the impact of new technologies on religious systems and images, on spirituality, on identity. He was an Episcopal priest, and it made sense to begin where he was. What he wrote sounds obvious now. But it didn't, then.He realized that his insights applied to other aspects of society and culture too. What was happening to religions was happening to everything else, a sea change of global transformation driven by new technologies of information and communication. He left the professional ministry to write and speak full time in 1993.Security and intelligence professionals often value his insights because he sees into the heart of complex issues. He takes nothing at face value and links insights to the mixed motives of the human heart, trying to amplify the unheard music playing at the edges of our lives.Mostly he delivers keynotes and closing speeches that unite the diverse themes of a conference. He has spoken in lots of venues - Sydney and Brisbane, Dublin and Amsterdam and Oslo, Israel (for Microsoft), and all around the States, including many hacker cons. Def Con is his favorite, where he spoke in 2007 for the twelfth straight year.
