Decades before the 1997 sci-fi comedy "Men In Black" launched a multibillion dollar film franchise, a young folklorist, UFO promoter Gray Barker helped to spread the original MIB concept in a book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. The details about Barker's colorful life is told in Gabriel Mckee's book, The Saucerian: The Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker (MIT Press). It's the strange, but true biography of a central purveyor and promoter of flying saucer and conspiracist knowledge in the mid-twentieth century. Known mostly to people in the UFO field, Barker (who died in 1984) was an eccentric literary outsider, filled with ideas that were out of step with the world. An author and unreliable narrator of implausible stories, Barker founded and operated Saucerian Books, an independent publisher of books about flying saucers and other ideas at the fringes of popular discourse. In The Saucerian, Gabriel Mckee tells the fascinating story of Barker's West Virginia–based press, the unique corpus of materials it published, and how office-copying and self-publishing techniques influenced the spread of paranormal beliefs and conspiratorial worldviews over the last century. In 1979, forestry worker Bob Taylor was attacked by two spiked objects that exited a strange craft that was hovering in a clearing. Taylor, who was 61 at the time and has since passed away, was knocked unconscious during the attack, but when he awoke, he found himself bruised and delirious, and discovered that his pants had been ripped open by the spiked objects. He has been fascinated all his life with cryptozoology, and in particular, Bigfoot, because of his work in films and with real apes. The most famous single piece of filmed material purported to be a Bigfoot is the Patterson-Gimlin film taken in 1967, and in the last 40 years, there has been an ongoing and still unresolved debate about whether the female figure seen in the film is a real primate of unknown species, or an ordinary human being wearing a fur suit. William put his research into a 2014 book called "When Roger Met Patty," which details his analysis of the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film, addressing the question of hoax or fraud from the perspective of a professional makeup and creature effects designer, as well as the perspective of a vintage filmmaker. He started as a movie makeup artist when he was 20, and quickly gravitated toward the "creature" side of the field, doing prosthetics, masks, and makeup effects. William perfected doing film makeup and creatures were exacting in their nature, the kind of skills necessary for very realistic figures. Bertram is also a filmmaker and film festival programmer. Over 75 years after the modern UFO era began, Bertram, an Australian expatriate and UFO historian, found himself living in central Wisconsin: In a neighboring county to the one Palmer called home, and just a short, back-road, commute to the rural property where Palmer ran his UFO publishing company.
