Why does Rashi describe Egyptian unity as "one heart like one man" but flip the order for Jewish unity at Sinai - "one man with one heart"? This small textual reversal reveals something profound about what makes Jewish connection fundamentally different from any other group. In this week's Parshas Beshalach, we explore a Gemara that uses three dream symbols - a pot, birds, and a river - to illuminate three distinct levels of unity. The Egyptians shared a goal. The Jewish people share a soul.Through a powerful true story of a kiruv trip where a Canadian and a Mexican Jew discovered their grandmothers were neighbors in Lodz, Poland - and a transcendent Shabbos moment singing Ani Maamin with a Chassidishe Rebbe in Meah Shearim - discover why Jewish unity isn't something we create. It's something we remember.Join Rabbi Asaf Aharon Prisman for this week's Torah wisdom on connection, family, and what it really means to be Subscribe for weekly Torah inspiration and share with someone who needs to hear this.#Torah #Parsha #Beshalach #JewishPodcast #WeeklyInspiration #JewishUnity #Achdus

By the spring of 1945, the Soviet Army was closing in on Berlin from the east, the Allies had entered Germany from the west, and Adolf Hitler committed suicide on 30 April. From the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, some 20 million military personnel had been killed along with 40 million civilians. Of those, 6 million were Jews and that included 1.5 million children. This podcast season takes you into the personal stories of nine elderly Jews we interviewed between 2001 and 2010. In the first episode three Ukrainian Jews will tell you about fighting their way into Berlin. In episode two, we'll hear from a young Jewish man freed from a German work camp, a teenager in Budapest who went to the train station hoping her father would be coming back, and from someone who stumbled back in Lodz, hoping to find someone in her family might still be alive. The third episode is all about starting over: in Vilnius in Lithuania, in Bitola in today's North Macedonia, and in Targu Mures in Romania. All these stories were told to us by Jews who had been born in Europe—and who remained in Europe. Their stories were recorded in each of their languages. We have translated and edited them and they are read for us by actors in London. This podcast season was co-funded by the European Union.

Emotions in Yiddish Ghetto Diaries: Encountering Persecutors and Questioning Humanity (Routledge, 2024) uses an empathic reading of Yiddish diarists' feelings, evaluations, and assessments about persecutors in the Warsaw, Lodz, and Vilna ghettos to present an emotional history of persecution in the Nazi ghettos. It re-centers the daily experiences of psychological and physical violence that made up ghetto life and that ultimately led victims to use their diaries as a place of agency to question and attempt to maintain their own beliefs in pre-war Jewish and Enlightenment ethics and morality. Holocaust scholars and students, as well as people interested in personal narratives, interpersonal relations, and the problem of dehumanization during the Holocaust will find this study particularly thought-provoking. Essentially, this book highlights the benefits of reading with empathy and paying attention to emotions for understanding the experiences of people in the past, especially those facing tragedy and trauma. About the Lecture It has been fifteen years since the Smolensk air disaster. On April 10, 2010, a Polish presidential plane crashed near the Smolensk military airport on Russian territory. Among the victims were President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Maria. The causes of the crash remain unknown and controversial. How has this event impacted politics in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe? What lessons can we learn from this tragic event? Professor Zurawski vel Grajewski will answer these and other questions. "My beloved mother had the zechut of living in Israel, my beloved grandmother, who I never knew, died of typhus in the Lodz ghetto. May their memories be a blessing." Today's daf is dedicated in memory of Ariel and Kfir Bibas, and Oded Lifshitz, and pray for the safe return of Ariel and Kfir's mother, Shiri. Our hearts are with the families.  One who desecrates Shabbat gets stoned. What exceptions to the rule are there? One who curses one's father and mother gets stoned. However, this is limited to one who cursed them using the name of God. There is a debate about whether it is only if one uses the name of God and not a nickname. The verse regarding the punishment for this is extrapolated. The warning for this is derived from the verse in Shmot 22:27 from the prohibition to curse Elohim (either judges or God) and a Nasi. How is it derived from this verse? One who engages in sexual relations with a betrothed young woman receives the punishment of stoning. To receive this specific punishment, the woman must be a naara (the stage between a ketana and a bogeret), virgin, betrothed, and still in her father's domain. If two men engage in relations with her, only the first is stoned, the second receives the typical punishment for adultery of strangulation. All these details are derived from verses in the Torah. The Mishna corresponds to the opinion of Rabbi Meir, as the rabbis disagree and obligate one even if the woman is younger, a ketana. There is a tannaitic debate between Rabbi Yonatan and Rabbi Yoshea about whether according to Rabbi Meir there is a punishment of strangulation for the man if the girl is under the age of a naara or if there would be no punishment at all. Each establishes his position using a verse from the Torah. What does each one derive from the verse supporting the other's opinion?

In the summer of 1939 there was a little girl living in Lodz, Poland who was looking forward to the first grade. It was while on the family summer vacation that Eva Unterman heard her family members quietly talking about Germany and war. They cut short their vacation and went home to Lodz and soon little Eva was looking at black, shiny boots. The German invasion of Poland was underway. Eva's family was forced into the Lodz Ghetto. After four years in the ghetto they were deported to Auschwitz, Stutthof and a labor camp in Dresden and then marched to Theresienstadt. This march is referred to as the Death March. It was May 1945 when Eva and her parents were liberated. The German Third Reich took the lives of three million Polish Jews in World War II. Only a small number survived or managed to escape. And today, survivor Eva Unterman, now an Oklahoman, tells her story to honor the millions of children whose lives were cut short by the Nazis, and to be sure the Holocaust shall never happen again!Eva's granddaughter Phoebe has written a children's book Through Eva's Eyes about her grandmother's early life in Poland.
