Rod Rakic, founder of OpenAirplane and FlyOtto, tells the story of a flight he and his companions took from Opa Locka near Miami, FL down to Key West. And yes, there was pie.
In this podcast we talk with Rod Rakic about the fact that recreational drone operators are not bound by Part 107 UAS laws. In fact, they are not bound by much at all.
Rod Rakic returns to visit with the SimpleFlight Crew. But this time, it has nothing to do with his entrepreneurial endeavors with Open Airplane and Fly Otto. Rather this time, we focus on his work with the Civil Air Patrol (www.gocivilairpatrol.com). The C.A.P. has one of the largest single-engine piston aircraft fleets in the world, operating 560 powered planes that fly about 100,000 hours annually in support of search and rescue, disaster relief, air defense, cadet orientation flights and Air Force-assigned missions. Its mission is often misunderstood, so listen in as Rod educates us on it's history and how its 58,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace education and helping shape future leaders through C.A.P.’s cadet program. We know you'll enjoy the show, so take a listen and provide us feedback on what you liked best. =============== We hope you enjoy listening as much as we love talking to others who share our passion for aviation. After a short 4 years, the SimpleFlight crew was pleased to welcome back Rod Rakic, co-founder of OpenAirplane, Inc., a company focused on bringing pilots, planes, and passengers together. The initial premise was to build an organization that operated similar to how auto rental agencies bringing drivers and cars together. Once established, Rod and his team launched a second offering, called FlyOtto, which matches passengers and flights together. The two "products" promise to increase activity within General Aviation, delivering real value to all stakeholders. Listen in and find out how the company has done over the last 4 years and what changes we might see in the future! =============== We hope you enjoy listening as much as we love talking to others who share our passion for aviation. The recent incident with United Airlines dragging their customer off a plane against his will has America in utter shock. When it comes to air travel is customer service even a term for travelers anymore or is this treatment just par for the course of increased air travel? Our guest tonight on Late Night Health tonight is Rod Rakic, a FAA commercial rated pilot, volunteer Civil Air Patrol officer, and co-founder of FlyOtto says the future of air travel is going to get better and passengers do have rights that they may not be aware of that they can use to their benefit. He says a huge factor to why air travel can be so stressful is because most travelers are just told what to do and where to go without much explanation. He says this can cause a lot of unnecessary aggravation that could be easily resolved if passengers had the tools and knowledge to navigate their trips more effectively.Rod Rakic says decoding arduous air travel mysteries can alleviate unnecessary flight frustrations this spring and summer. He share with Late Night Heath how to avert three common airline aggravations to regain a sense of control even if you are not in the cockpit including: 1) oversold situations; 2) flight delays; and 3) shortcuts to gaining better status (for better treatment). As a seasoned pilot and trailblazing aviation entrepreneur, Rod Rakic has spent the last decade developing online tools to help travelers have a positive in-flight experience. His award-winning technology has increased accessibility and ease of flying for pilots and passengers alike, while simultaneously helping save an infrastructure of 5,000 public use airports across the country that are underutilized by commercial airlines. His latest development is www.flyotto.com and he will share with us how this first of its kind online experience for booking on-demand, private flights with departures possible in less than 24 hours may change the way you approach booking future travel.Join host Mark Alyn on Late Night Health Radio with pilot and co-founder of FlyOtto, Rod Rakic to address three of the most common travel aggravations and discover what your rights are as a passenger!air date: 3/10/17

Interview with Rod Rakic, founder of FlyOtto.com, on a creative alternative to United’s current policy of bumping paying passengers to seat airline employees: On demand charter aircraft. This week, United Airlines is in the news for the PR disaster they created on the ground at the Chicago O'Hare Airport when they dragged a passenger off a plane to make room for airline employees who need to get to Louisville to crew a flight the next today. The passenger, Dr. David Dao, screamed as officers pulled him out of his seat. They slammed his face into the armrest and then dragged him, apparently unconscious, by his arms along the aircraft's aisle. In the aftermath, FlyOtto, an on-demand air charter service, made an interesting offer to United Airlines.
Americans like to fly, and as the prices become a bit more affordable, more of us are looking at the sometimes not-so-friendly skies. And corresponding, business travel is on the rise. But the experience can be stressful for a myriad of reasons, from TSA lines to over-sold airplanes. Rod Rakic, a FAA commercial rated pilot, […]

Imagine being able to rent aircraft with ease, almost anywhere in the US. OpenAirplane does just that- and we learn more from the Cofounder on AviatorCast. Imagine how frustrated you'd be if you had to take a driving test every time you rented a car. Well that's what private pilots deal with when they rent a plane outside of their home base or flight school. It takes months of training and thousands of dollars to get a pilot's license, but simply having one doesn't mean anyone will honor it. So pilots pony up more money to demonstrate their skills just to get the right to rent, or simply don't fly. In this episode, host Mike O'Toole chats with Rod Rakic, Co-founder of Open Airplane – a company getting more planes in the air by raising standards for pilots and lowering the barriers for everyone else. The two discuss how Open Airplane managed to woo the insurance industry, even after Lloyd's of London called them crazy — and how society as a whole, not just aviation, is benefiting from their service.
Rod Rakic shares his inspiring pilot journey. Rod Rakic is committed to helping aviation work better. He’s a co-founder at OpenAirplane, which makes renting an airplane as easy as renting a car. In this episode we have a very special guest, Rod Rakic, who joined us to discuss his exciting new venture, OpenAirplane. OpenAirplane is a new service launching soon that will help pilots to rent aircraft easier than ever before. So tune in and learn more about this new service and how OpenAirplane will completely change the way we rent aircraft. More about OpenAirplane, and the form to sign up to receive updates is at www.OpenAirplane.com. You can also follow them on Twitter @OpenAirplane and Facebook at OpenAirplane. Hello everybody. In this episode I have invited special guests to a round table discussion the Civil Air Patrol. I have always been interested in joining and had some questions. So I decided to invite some very special guests, who are all members of the Civil Air Patrol to answer some questions and talk about their experiences in the Civil Air Patrol. I figured if I was interested in joining and had some questions, some of the listeners of this podcast might also have questions and might be interested in hearing about the Civil Air Patrol. We discuss many different subjects including how to join, the different types of squadrons, the commitment level required, the aircraft, the different jobs, the history and the mission of the Civil Air Patrol. The listener who is a pilot will be interested in hearing about what he or she can do with his or her private pilot's license. For the student pilot or a person interested in becoming a pilot, he or she will interested in the discussion of whether he or she can get their Private Pilot's License through the Civil Air Patrol (hint: the cadet member can the senior cannot, but he or she can get advanced ratings).I learned a lot about the Civil Air Patrol and am planning to join (I will keep everyone updated). This is a great organization where young people can gain very important skills that will serve them well for the rest of their life and where anyone can do great work and server their community and country. For anyone interested please go to http://gocivilairpatrol.com/.As a note, everyone who participated in this discussion were speaking as individuals and their comments do not reflect the views of the Civil Air Patrol.Future DiscussionThis is first in a series of discussions I am planning to have on different things that a new pilot, or for that matter any pilot, can do in addition to the $100 hamburger. Hopefully this will get the juices flowing of anyone thinking about getting their PPL or kick-starting a dormant pilot. If anyone would like to hear about a specific subject, please email me. I will try to set up a discussion about it.Shoutouts:I will like to thank my guests for spending 2 hours with me discussing the Civil Air Patrol.Steve Tupper from Airspeed Podcast and Acro CampDavid Allen from The Pilot's Flight PodLog and Other People's AirplanesNate Deuhr from The Mile High Flyers PodcastRod Rakic from myTransponder.comDavid CrawfordPodcast Promos:AirspeedPilot's Flight PodLogBlue skies and tailwinds always. You can reach me at TheNewPilotPodBlog@gmail.comPlease send comments and suggestions. You can follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/NewPilotPodBlogAnd LIPilot on myTransponder.comPlease join the myTransponder.com group Friends of The New Pilot PodBlog. The New Pilot PodBlog is now on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/TheNewPilotPodBlogA Proud Member of the Aviation Media Network: http://TheVoicesInYourHead.comThe intro and closing song is John Mellencamp's My Aeroplane.Direct access to the mp3 is here
I got together with myTransponder.com founder Rod Rakic to talk about accelerated flight training. Rod has done accelerated programs as a part of both his commercial and instrument training. I did my AMEL, ASES, and DC-3 (SIC) training in accelerated programs. And Rod and I are both graduates of the CAP National Emergency Services Academy’s Mission Aircrew School. We talked about the benefits and drawbacks of accelerated and/or concentrated training and how best to take advantage of it.
Hello Everybody. This episode is my recollections and imperessions of my first trip to Oshkosh. We spent 3 days at AirVenture, camping at Camp Scholler. I participated in Podapalooza on Friday night along with other aviation podcasters. This trip was very special for me since I was able to share my passion of aviation and my first trip to AirVenture with my sons. This was our first "boys" trip together and what a trip it was.The one thing that I will take from this trip is how social media is helping to bring people together, especially the aviation community. I met many of my "social media" friends for the first time in person at Oshkosh. We have all become friendly through Twitter, forums and listening to each other's podcasts. Even before I arrived at Oshkosh I already had meetups scheduled with my friends. So instead of not knowing anyone there, I had parties and meetups to go to. This is what our small community is all about. Strangers coming together with a single, common interest and hanging out like we knew each other for years. You can see my pictures from Oshkosh at http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcigliano/sets/72157624676352535/Some housekeeping,The URL for the web site has changed to be less of a mouthful, TheNewPilotPodBlog.com (removing blogspot from the name). The old URL will still work.I am using new equipment, a Behringer XM8500 microphone and Behringer Xenyx802 mixer. I hope the audio quality has improved. I plan to make some more equipment purchases.
