On episode 96, Micah and Brian talk with Eric the Mapmaker about his receint trip to Italy on a new airline, Neon. Well, a new airline to us even though they have been in business for a while. But first, we hear from Listener Mike who joins us from the Airplane Geeks podcast. Mike writes in and wants to know about Premium Economy seating and how they differ between airlines. (Check out this article for more information. https://www.businesstraveller.com/features/which-airlines-have-the-best-premium-economy/)  Listener subway Mark writes in about taking public transportation to the airport. Micah and I agree that it's a good idea, just not very convenient in most US cities.  Listener Lu wants to know our thoughts on people who stand up as soon as the plane lands and the flight attendant turns off the seatbelt sign.  For the main segment, Brian and Micah talk with Mapmaker Eric about his trip on Neos to Italy.  Well, there was so much to talk about, we had to break this up into two episodes... so check out the second part of the conversation on episode 97. The opening and closing music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome song and their Good By song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. And if you would like to hear them sing live, get in touch with us at Brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.ORG to learn about the group trip we are planning in late September or October, 2025. We hope you enjoy the show!

On episode 85, Micah and I finally wrap up my trip to Australia. But first, we hear from Listener Bill who wants to know why Micah loves his cash back instead of going for points. Had Micah spent on the right cards, he would have had enough miles for a free business class ticket to Australia. Instead, he only received $240 in cash. We also had the opportunity to share our thoughts on Listener Lu's question about Southwest charging for seats. Both Micah and I believe this will not work out well for Southwest. During the main segment, we get to play the episode that was recorded in Australia at the PCDU home studio of Steve, and was supposed to be played when I was still in country. We then get to hear Steve do a Pacific Airshow Gold Coast radio promo. The Oz Desk, episode 813, which is played on the Airplane Geeks, was played next. Then we get to hear the recording from the meetup with Grant, ATC Ben, Evan and Leighton. A great time was had by all. Special thanks once again to Steve, Grant, their wives, the guys at the meetup, and all the guests we had on the show.  I wouldn't have been able to do it without them… and you too Micah!!! And if anyone is interested in joining me on a trip to Africa in September or October, 2025, please let me know so I can get you more information. Opening and closing music for The Journey Is The Reward podcast is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir, recorded live in the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

Nimrod XV250 is based at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington near York. She was dedicated by the Archbishop of York to stand as a permanent tribute to the 14 British servicemen killed in Afghanistan when Nimrod XV230 crashed near Kandahar in September 2006. Her team of volunteers keep her in a ground running condition to remember all Aircrew and Groundcrew who served on "The Kipper Fleet". Ken Bannister joins me today to talk about The Maid of Moray, his RAF career with the Nimrod and to help us better understand the Nimrods capabilities as an Anti-Submarine Warfare, Search and Rescue and surveillance platform. At the end of World War Two RAF Coastal Command faced the same challenges of all the British military services, one of reduction, cutbacks and a return to a peaceful world. The threat from the axis powers had been effectively squashed but there was a new threat emerging, in the form of the Soviet Union.  Coastal Command had to start learning about new adversaries once again, adapting and performing immediately, to protect British interests initially in the northern Atlantic, but rapidly elsewhere.  For almost 60 Cold War years, the RAF relied heavily on two aircraft types, through various models, enhancements and sheer longevity. The Avro Shackleton and the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. Chris Gibson author of the brilliant book ‘Nimrod's Genesis', joins us to help understand the new threat and explain to process the UK took to replace its old aircraft with new more sophisticated platforms.   Recorded 19th June 2024   Contact Us: GetInvolved@aviation-Xtended.co.uk   You can buy a copy of Nimrod's Genesis from the Aviation Xtended Bookshop helping Xtended and local bookshops in the process here https://uk.bookshop.org/a/11161/9781902109473   Chris Gibson ·         Nimrod's Genesis: RAF Maritime Patrol Projects and Weapons Since 1945 https://www.crecy.co.uk/nimrod-s-genesis Costal Command Series ·         EP.132: COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 9 – RAF THORNEY ISLAND ·         EP.131:COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 8 – THE FLEET AIR ARM ·         EP.130: COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 7 – AUSTRALIAN AND ALLIED AIRCREWS ·         EP.129:COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 6 – THE ADVERSARIES ·      EP.128:COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 5 – KIWI CREWS ·      EP.127 – COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 4: STRIKE WINGS ·         EP.124 –COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 3: BATTLE FOR THE ATLANTIC ·         EP.123 –COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 2: THE AIRCRAFT ·         EP.122 –COASTAL COMMAND CHAPTER 1: ‘CONSTANT ENDEAVOUR (THE OVERVIEW)' Please leave us a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or your podcast playing app. Here is a link to all the pod players https://pod.link/1611149544    Aviation Xtended Partners ·         Royal Aeronautical Society https://www.aerosociety.com/ ·         GlobalAviation Resource http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v2/ ·         XTPMedia https://www.xtpmedia.co.uk/ ·         Ellie Carter https://twitter.com/dragongirl94   Show Supporters ·         The Aviation Historian http://www.theaviationhistorian.com/ ·         Aviation Enthusiasts Book Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/359410134220076 ·         Aircrew Book Review https://aircrewbookreview.blogspot.com/   Xtended Podcast family ·         AeroSociety https://www.aerosociety.com/events/catch-up-on-events/video-audio-archive/ ·         Airplane Geeks http://www.airplanegeeks.com/ ·         PCDU https://www.planecrazydownunder.com/ ·         Wings Over New Zealand Show http://cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZ_Show.html You can shop through this Amazon link (No cost to you but a small benefit to us: ·         https://www.amazon.co.uk/?tag=xtenaeroradi-21&linkCode=ur1

Listener Lu sent in a recording because she wants to know about us being pilots, our RC and or drone experiences. We than play a recording Micah and I made for the Airplane Geeks. Some of these items one might not consider but our conversation, hopefully, explains the various parts of a superior Wi-Fi experience at 35,000 feet. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international (Non-US) listeners.  Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen.  We love hearing from you!!! The Museum calls itself “the world's largest and most significant collection of aviation and space artifacts, encompassing all aspects of human flight, as well as related works of art and archival materials.” It's typically the most visited museum in the United States. The museum occupies two locations: The original location is in Washington, DC and the newer Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the annex, located outside DC next to Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia. That facility was made possible by a $65 million donation by Steven F. Udvar-Házy, a co-founder of the aircraft leasing firm International Lease Finance Corporation, or ILFC. In this episode, we look at the DC facility. It was established in 1946 as the National Air Museum and the main building opened on the National Mall in 1976. In 2018 the Museum started a $250 million seven-year renovation project. When the renovation is completed, all of the museum's 23 galleries and presentation spaces will be updated or completely redone. On Oct. 14, 2022, the downtown museum reopened with eight new and renovated galleries in the west wing. Our Hillel Glazer was present representing the Airplane Geeks podcast at the press preview day, and he recorded some interviews. Christopher Browne Hillel recorded the opening video and the remarks from Christopher Browne, the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. Browne joined the museum as deputy director in 2017 and served as acting director from 2021 to 2022 when he was named director. Next, Hillel speaks with Dr. Jermery Kinner, the Associate Director of Research and Curatorial Affairs at the National Air and Space Museum. He leads the Museum's three research and curatorial departments (Aeronautics, the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies or CEPS, and Space History). Kinner also provides counsel and advice on curatorial and museum affairs to the Director and the Senior Leadership Team. Finally, we'll hear from Beth Wilson. She's been an educator at the Museum since 2004. Video: Space For Everyone | The Reimagined National Air and Space Museum Open October 14 https://youtu.be/Ds6ILAlNUPU Hosts this Episode Max Flight and Hillel Glazer.

On episode 16, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listeners Marc-Alexandre and Lisa. Marc-Alexandre asks about not always flying on United and the environmental impact of my flying. Lisa can't believe I don't remember Land Shark from Saturday Nite Live. Micah and I then talk about the devaluation of frequent traveler programs and the democratization of Lounges. Then we discuss the 'Houston we have a podcast' show where they talk about women in STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. I add my 2 pennies on how I always promoted women when I was Associate Producer on the Airplane Geeks podcast. I strongly feel as though it's everyones responsibility to highlight woman and show girls they can do anything. Aviation doesn't have to be a male only industry! Sometimes girls just need to see someone doing a STEM related job and then they can envision themselves doing the same job. We finish the show talking about the courier services I am offering and the two people who have chosen to fly with me to Africa and Zambia on upcoming trips. It will be lots of fun being their tour guide! But first, next up for me are two quick trips to Hawaii and then a courier trip to Singapore. Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

Returning all-star guest Max Flight helps me cover 17 ways to re-evaluate your podcast this summer, and we also discuss Max's latest podcast production workflow, equipment, software and more. Max has been producing aviation podcasts since 2008: Airplane Geeks (now over 700 episodes!) The UAV Digest (looking at unmanned aircraft or drones) Check out his main site — http://thirtythousandfeet.com/ He was previously on episodes 20 and 39 of this show Check out his equipment, software, services and more below... We discuss these 17 ways in which you can re-evaluate and improve your show this summer: Update your goals Change the format Start using chapters Personal focus on eliminating verbal crutches. (A short duration of intense focus will provide years of good results) Change and/or add equipment Sell old equipment Treat yourself to that mic you've always wanted Sound absorption and diffusers Add a new segment Cover new yet pertinent subject matter topics Publish in video format as well Publish better shownotes Revamp your marketing Evaluate the shows overall effectiveness Hire a VA Bring on a cohost Decide to end your show??? Perhaps decide you want to become a professional podcast engineer/producer and earn a great living producing podcasts for clients - from home?! And here's a lot more detail on Max's production: Big changes since PES 20 and PES 39 mostly involve a simplification of the signal path: Skype and cohost multi-enders replaced by Riverside.fm Behringer mixer (still going strong since 2009!) replaced with MixPre The MixPre handles all mic pre-amplification Sound clips and pre-recorded segments played through Riverside, replacing an iOS soundboard Backup recording is handled by the MixPre Current equipment: Sound Devices MixPre-6 Also use a MixPre-3 Gen 2 for field recordings Zoom H5 for field recordings, too Heil PR40 Sennheiser MD46 interview mic Dell XPS 16 and MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018 model, 2.9GHz i9 32 GB laptops Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones Yamaha HS5 monitors Software: Riverside.fm (was Skype then Squadcast) Hindenburg Journalist Pro Audacity (yep!) iZotope RX 8 Advanced ID3 Editor for tagging Services: Media hosting: Blubrry and Libsyn Website hosting: Bluehost and SiteGround Notes from Max: I'm retired and traveling more which makes weekly podcast production a bit more difficult. Biggest current problem: At the home studio I mix/master with my Yamaha monitors, which I love. I can't master properly with the Audio Technica headphones when traveling. Other Notes: If you ever have questions please reach out! You can sign up to receive Daily Goody's in your email a few times per week or a weekly roundup. Sign up here. The start date for the next PES semester is Sep. 13, 2022! (fyi, the course is delivered once per quarter) If you'd like to share this show with any of your podcaster friends, feel free to send them a message saying, “Btw, here's a show about podcast audio production you may find helpful” with this link: https://podcastengineeringschool.com/subscribe/) Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with anything, ~Chris

Today on the Show. What happens when a couple of guys with a double sided long view get together and start talking shop about something important to them? So, a little about Rob. As if you didn't know, he's the senior editor at Flying Magazine. You've all heard him for years on Airplane Geeks, and on his own JetWhine production at Jetwhine.com.  He's a journalism Alum @Northwestern University, and this is where our story takes a fun turn. I don't think either one of us knew how much we had in common!  My Wife went to Northwestern. And I went to Purdue. I flew up there a lot to visit, and I always flew into PWK airport. Now “Chicago Executive” whatever.  A lot of people don't know this, but Rob used to be a Controller too. His office is something I've probably driven past 100 times in Evanston. It looks like our careers are following a strikingly similar path so far.  Him and I have gone back and forth before, and he's even recorded a piece for this show called “the scariest takeoff I ever made” (Episode 023).  Cool. But there's still the matter of this whole “chat” thing. It's probably time we get that sorted out…

ATC Privatization On June 22, 2017, the U.S. House of Representatives released H.R. 2997, the AIRR Act, calling for the privatization of Air Traffic Control in the U.S. Later, both EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and NBAA, the National Business Aviation Association, issued an urgent call for members to contact their representatives in Congress to oppose ATC privatization. AOPA, the Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association, also sent a call for their members to contact their representations just before we published this show, which is why we weren't able to mention them in the podcast. Please take action by going to govt.eaa.org to generate a letter to your representatives in Congress. UAV activity disrupts Dubai Airport operations Operations at Dubai International Airport were disrupted for almost an hour due to unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicle activity. This wasn't the first time, either. United Arab Emirates (UAE) state Abu Dhabi has banned drone sales to the public because of the potential threat they pose to civil aviation. First Underwater Unmanned Aircraft Launch from an AUV In a cross-domain command and control event hosted by the U.S. Navy, a small Vector Hawk UAV was launched from a Marlin autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). At the same time, the Submaran unmanned surface vehicle (USV) developed by Ocean Aero provided surface reconnaissance and surveillance. Introducing the Tesla Drone The Tesla Drone is a concept from U.K. based designer, Fraser Leid. Dual propellers can operate horizontally or vertically and provide enough stability that a gimbal is not required. We talk with a Part 61 pilot who has successfully completed the FAA UAS online training course. We also look at consumer drone vulnerabilities, the threats that drones represent to aviation, using big data to develop a contextual route-plan for autonomous drones, a globe-trotting drone racer, and flying drones in public parks. Flock flight planning tool Part 107 The new small drone rule for non-hobbyists (also known as Part 107) becomes effective August 29, 2016. The person flying a drone must have a remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating, or be directly supervised by someone with that certificate. To qualify for the certificate, you must either pass an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center or have an existing non-student Part 61 pilot certificate. Those with a Part 61 pilot certificate must have completed a flight review in the previous 24 months and take an FAA UAS online training course. Guest Max Trescott is a certified flight instructor and co-host on the Airplane Geeks podcast. Max completed the ALC-451, Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) online course and tells us about his experience. At the FAA Safety Team website, pilots can start by clicking the Part 107 image at the top of the page. After completing the course, print the completion certificate or email to yourself. Then, on or after August 29, 2016, sign into IACRA.faa.gov and fill out the application for a Part 107 license. Flight Instructors, pilot examiners, and FAA inspectors can then approve pilot as a commercial drone operator. The materials can be reviewed by clicking the “Part 107 Knowledge Test Prep” button at www.faa,gov/uas. News Why Are Engineers Intentionally Crashing Drones? Researchers at Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering have been testing consumer drones for vulnerabilities. They found they could overload the drone's CPU with wireless connection requests and cause an uncontrolled landing, they could crash the drone by sending it a large data packet and causing a buffer overflow, and the drone made an emergency landing when researchers confused the controller with false data packets. Lanier A. Watkins, the cybersecurity researcher who supervised the recent drone research, said, "You see it with a lot of new technology. Security is often an afterthought. The value of our work is in showing that the technology in these drones is highly vulnerable to hackers." Johns Hopkins Research Finds Drones Vulnerable to Attack http://youtu.be/0Ihin_9wVuA Drones, lasers seen as key aviation terrorism threats A report by the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism titled, Trends in Aviation Terrorism identified three threats: lasers, radicalized airport employees, and drones. With respect to drone threats, the report notes: Proximity of drones to airliners and airports and the possibility of taking one down Terrorist websites advocating drones with explosives to take down airplanes Reports of terrorists using drones for intelligence gathering in Syria, Iraq and other countries. New AI program could help drones avoid flying over big crowds Artificial intelligence company Flock uses “Big Data” to drive a contextual route-planner for drones. Their AI platform “tracks in real time the position of people, vehicles, structures, weather systems and more, calculating the safest possible flight-paths for drones to fly through congested urban environments.” The algorithm “visualises population density and traffic statistics using real-time data streams.” Canadian drone racer says sport better version of Formula One racing 26-year old Andrew "MayMayDay" Meyer is traveling the world competing in drone races. Places like Canada, the United States, Dubai, and South Korea. This is an overview of what Max's engineering in his own words from an email he sent me: I'm involved with 3 podcasts, all aviation-related:   Airplane Geeks: Co-founder (2008), host, and producer (since 2009). The UAV Digest: A spinoff from Airplane Geeks. I co-host and produce. The PaxEx Podcast: Co-host and I produce it up to the MP3, after which I hand it off. All shows are over Skype with co-host(s) and guest. Mix-minus, 2 laptops, record into both hardware and software, soundboard on iPad. I record in my home studio, in hotel rooms, at conferences and public events (annually at the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum). So depending on the situation, I use the Heil PR40, Sennheiser e835, AudioTechnica ATR2100, and a Sennheiser MD 46 interview mic.   Other gear: TritonAudio FetHead, Marantz PMD620 and Zoom H4n recorders, Focusrite Scarlett Solo, a bunch of Behringer UCA-2xx audio interfaces, Sennheiser A380 and Sony MDR V6 headphones, Monster Cable 3500, Yamaha HS5 monitor. I've used a Presonus Tube-pre in the past, but not lately.   For software I use Audacity and Hindenburg Journalist Pro. I love Hindy. It's really a different model for a DAW. I like to record clean at proper levels with no effects (and little to no noise floor). Each person on their own track, EQ by track, global compression, loudness at -16 LUFS.    Thank you for being a wonderful guest, Max! Anti-drone systems and shooting down drones, more legislation from California, the authority to control the airspace, the FAA clamps down on R/C and drone clubs in Washington, D.C., formation flying, drones in television and film, stealth UAVs, and the B4UFLY app. And now, for something completely different… Instead of recording this episode over Skype for an audio program, we tried a bit of an experiment and recorded a video show live on Blab.im with an audience participating. Blab is a service where you schedule a video show on the topic of your choice. Up to four people at a time with webcams can participate in the video portion. Those watching can communicate in a chat session that runs alongside the video. The audience can jump into the video when one of the four seats opens up. We were joined in the video by flight instructor and Airplane Geeks co-host Max Trescott. Mike Wilkerson from the 2GuysTalking Podcast Network also talked with us. Thanks to them and all the others who joined us live on Blab! News Counter-UAV Camera System Revealed According to Ubergizmo, Airbus have developed a "Counter UAV" system that uses sensors to detect drones around aircraft. The system then spoofs the drone's control frequencies and takes over command. Or the frequencies can be jammed to disable the drone. The technology comes from Airbus Defence and Space. Drone wars: new UAV interceptor billed as net-firing solution to rogue flying Michigan Technological University has developed an octocopter that fires a net up to 12 meters to capture rogue drones. The MTU drone can grab another drone with its net and carry it away, either autonomously or under human control. Robotic Falconry - Drone Catcher System for Removing the Intruding Drones A video of the Drone Catcher in action: Proof of concept prototype of a drone catcher system to intercept and physically remove the intruding multi-rotor drones from the protected areas (patent pending). This system offers a viable solution when force-landing or shooting the drones would jeopardize the safety. A patent has been filed. Net Gun Drone - Excipio | Flite Test In this video from Flite Test, a DJI Flamewheel F550 equipped with the Excipio Net Gun captures another drone in mid-air. Drone Legislation Would Require Owners To Buy Insurance, Get UAV ‘License Plates' California Assemblyman Mike Gatto introduced the Drone Registration/Omnibus Negligence-prevention Enactment (DRONE) Act of 2016. If enacted, this would require that drone owners obtain insurance policies, register their drones, and obtain physical or electronic “license plates” for drones. Gatto's logic is, “If cars have license plates and insurance, drones should have the equivalent, so they can be properly identified, and owners can be held financially responsible, whenever injuries, interference, or property damage occurs.” Assemblyman Mike Gatto Announces The DRONE Act of 2016 According to the press release, the “DRONE Act” would: Require registration of, and tiny physical or electronic license plates for, drones.  All efforts to hold owners responsible (for example, for interfering with firefighting efforts) require this. Require inexpensive ($1, or so) insurance policies sold at the point-of-sale, much like CRV is collected for bottles and cans.  This will ensure that if a drone hurts someone or damages property, the victim can be compensated, and is akin to the auto-insurance requirements under existing law. Mandate that drones of a certain size, and equipped with GPS capability, feature automatic shut-off technology that would activate if approaching an airport.  This technology already exists, and is critical to protecting commercial passenger flights. Implement various other provisions designed to enhance responsibility and mitigate risk. Feds to Washington, D.C., Drone Enthusiasts: You're Grounded Under a new special flight rules area (SFRA),

We look back at the first 100 episodes, and ahead to the next 100. We also talk with Curator Roger Connor from the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum. The First 100 Episodes The UAV Digest was started as a spinoff of the Airplane Geeks podcast, with Episode #1 published on August 16, 2013. David and Max wanted to explore the exploding unmanned aircraft industry and communicate the positive uses for “drones.” Early conversation topics included the desire of many to begin commercial operations in areas such as real estate, precision agriculture, search and rescue, disasters and humanitarian relief, package delivery, and many more. The slow regulatory process in the U.S. came up over and over, but so did examples of unsafe use of UAVs by operators who didn't know any better. We did see the FAA step up with the launch of the UAS test centers, an exemption process, and finally the proposed regulations in the form of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). The Next 100 Episodes David and Max then mention some of the topics that we'll likely be talking about in the future. These include the next steps in the rulemaking process, creating awareness about safe operation, advancements in technology such as sense and avoid, and exciting applications for unmanned aircraft. Guest   Roger Connor is curator for Vertical Flight at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum. We spoke with Roger at the Innovations in Flight Family Day and Outdoor Aviation Display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. He tells us about some new additions to the unmanned aircraft collection, and those that were turned down. Roger also gives us a peek at some of the future acquisitions, including an Insitu ScanEagle and the Draganflyer X6 that was the first police UAV in the U.S. Video of the Week A drone just hit my plane this morning This video purports to show a multicopter striking an airliner and breaking off a winglet. News from the 2015 AUVSI Conference, including the Pathfinder Program where the FAA partners with industry to develop commercial UAS technology. AUVSI Unmanned Systems 2015 Conference The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) held its Unmanned Systems 2015 Conference May 4-7 in Atlanta, Georgia. At the Conference, the FAA announced the “Pathfinder Program” which it called “a partnership with industry to explore the next steps in unmanned aircraft operations beyond the type of operations the agency proposed in the draft small unmanned aircraft systems rule it published in February.” Speech – "UAS Pathfinder Program Announcement Press Conference" Press Release – FAA-Industry Initiative Will Expand Small UAS Horizons In his speech, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said, “We're partnering with three leading U.S. companies who have committed extensive resources to perform research that will help us determine if and how we can safely expand unmanned aircraft operations in the United States. These companies reached out to the FAA to work with us on exploring three key types of unmanned operations.” The industry partners and three focus areas are: Visual line-of-sight operations in urban areas. CNN will look at how UAS might be safely used for newsgathering in populated areas. Extended visual line-of-sight operations in rural areas. This concept involves UAS flights outside the pilot's direct vision. UAS manufacturer PrecisionHawk will explore how this might allow greater UAS use for crop monitoring in precision agriculture operations. Beyond visual line-of-sight in rural/isolated areas. BNSF Railway will explore command-and-control challenges of using UAS to inspect rail system infrastructure. Huerta said, “We anticipate receiving valuable data from each of these trials that could result in FAA-approved operations in the next few years. They will also give insight into how unmanned aircraft can be used to transform the way certain industries do business – whether that means making sure trains run on time, checking on the health of crops, or reporting on a natural disaster.” On the NPRM, Huerta commented on the number of public comments received, noting that it will take time to address them and finalize the rule. The Pathfinder Program is designed to expand expand the use of unmanned aircraft in the meantime. PrecisionHawk to work with FAA on UAV extended line-of-sight safety PrecisionHawk will formulate a framework for fixed wing and multirotor UAVs for missions in agriculture, forestry, and other rural industries. PrecisionHawk will also test its LATAS (Low Altitude Tracking & Avoidance System) traffic management system. I talk about some cool WordPress themes and some great insights into podcast promotion from Max Flight. Podcast Success Story I have been doing the Logical Weight Loss podcast for three years. I did some podcast consulting for David Greenwalt who turned out to be a fitness guru. He was nice enough to let me check out his Lifestyle University and  I liked what he was doing. He just launched his once a year class Lifestyle 180, and I decide to join and have Dave on my show. It wasn’t a giant commercial, but instead we just provided some facts and let the audience decide if they wanted to join me. The good news is a listener heard my podcast, and immediately signed up (and I earned $56 commission). Cool WordPress Themes (One if Free) In the past, I’ve used Thesis until they updated to version 2 (and I feel they ruined it). I purchased iThemes Builder (which I used in the past) only to find their “Style Manager” had a problem. So I went in search of a drag and drop WordPress theme and I found Pagelines. This at is a free WordPress theme that is free (do a search in your WordPress install for pagelines). The free version has a ton of easy to customize features. The pro version is $139. The Builder Theme is $80 and it allows you to customize the colors, fonts, etc in their Style Manager. Then you can drag and drop your layout. It makes it super easy to design your website. Their are TONS of “Child Themes” that you can get access to and add to your website (A Child Theme is a premade layout and style that can save you time). Max Flight on Podcast Promotion Max flight produces the Airplane Geeks and Podcasting Passion podcasts. Today we talk about how new podcasters learn that creating the podcast is only part of the process. You need to get the word out about your podcast. Everyone always says, “Great Content” is the best tool for growing your audience. I always have said that you need to figure out who your audience is, figure out where they are, and go there and make friends. Then tell them about your podcast. Today Max provides some tips on how you can get your audience involved with helping to spread the word. We hear how he is using Facebook, Questions, and regular segments from his audience into his Airplane Geeks. Max also produces the Podcasting Passion podcast Speaking of podcast promotion, booktourradio.com and refocuspodcast.com to the podcastclicks.com website (a banner exchange program for podcasts only). We had over 14,837,913 impressions last year and we delivered 182,923 clicks to their websites. We ask the question “What is a better use of your time, creating great content or going out and telling people about your show?” Leave your answer in a comment

If you are like me you listen to a plethora of aviation podcasts. I think some of the best aviation news comes from them and they stay on the topic I most care about most... aviation. A few months back I was listening to an episode of the Airplane Geeks Podcast and they were talking about the airplane of the week. One of the choices was the Aeronca Champ. If you didn't know back in the fall of 2008 I received my tailwheel endorsement in a red 1942 7AC Aeronca Champ. I don't think I've loved and airplane more then the Champ. I think it's a smilier experience to a first car or girl friend you never seem to forget it. Flying the Champ is real stick and rudder flying. Like any tail dragger you have to be quick on the rudder peddles but not hard I can still hear my instructor saying toe pressur that's all you need to control the rudder, sometimes not even that much just thinking about adding left or right rudder would do the trick. There is a real finesse in flying that I think so lost flying heavy more stable aircraft like a Cessna 172 or Piper Warrior. Just before my tailwheel endorsement I had just earned my private from Arizona State University's Pilot Development Program. A great program that gave me a great base of knowadge of aviation and my future certificates. But it was also very airline cockpit and Crew Resource Management (CRM) oriented.  The company procedures were many and the Pilot Operating Hand Book (POH) for each plane were hundreds of pages along with the other supplement guides that the school required to fly with. In contrast the Champs POH was barley 50 pages. The equipment on board was a radio, transponder, altimeter,  airspeed indicator  and an oil temp gauge. Flying the Champ was like riding a bicycle  Once I got the hang of it and in coordinated flight you could just feel everything in balance and it felt good. The visibility in the plane was amazing. It had large windows all around you and tandem seating so there was no one next to you to block your view. With a stick between your legs in place of a yoke it made the Champ more my kind of flying. After receiving my endorsement the Champ was my first choice for the airplane I wanted to take up as offen as I could when going around the patch or for short trips. It was fun and cheap then only $62 an hour wet!The airplane geeks did featured the Champ as the airplane of the week and David Vanderhoof did a great history segment on it followed by a story I told about flying back from Payson AZ to Mesa AZ  and the experience I had of almost running out of fuel, I thought. hope you enjoy.Download the podcast here. This is the day I got my endorsementMy favorite picture in Champ coming in short final in to Falcon Field AZ (FFZ)

Hello Everybody. This episode is my recollections and imperessions of my first trip to Oshkosh. We spent 3 days at AirVenture, camping at Camp Scholler. I participated in Podapalooza on Friday night along with other aviation podcasters. This trip was very special for me since I was able to share my passion of aviation and my first trip to AirVenture with my sons. This was our first "boys" trip together and what a trip it was. The one thing that I will take from this trip is how social media is helping to bring people together, especially the aviation community. I met many of my "social media" friends for the first time in person at Oshkosh. We have all become friendly through Twitter, forums and listening to each other's podcasts. Even before I arrived at Oshkosh I already had meetups scheduled with my friends. So instead of not knowing anyone there, I had parties and meetups to go to. This is what our small community is all about. Strangers coming together with a single, common interest and hanging out like we knew each other for years. You can see my pictures from Oshkosh at http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcigliano/sets/72157624676352535/Some housekeeping,The URL for the web site has changed to be less of a mouthful, TheNewPilotPodBlog.com (removing blogspot from the name). The old URL will still work.I am using new equipment, a Behringer XM8500 microphone and Behringer Xenyx802 mixer. I hope the audio quality has improved. I plan to make some more equipment purchases. Please let me know if you hear any improvements.I also have finally created a logo.
