Send us a textBefore the World Premiere of his very first play, Judson Jones streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight. We discussed his background in theatre, film, and television and his journey to writing his first play and any challenges he overcame. We dove into hitting the flow state, introducing new ideas, the appreciation of new works, storytelling through Post-It notes, working with deadlines, collaborating with designers and the benefits of simplicity and justification as well as eliminating and having an outside eye. We wrap with delving into devices vs dialogue, working with sensitive subject matter, writing out of order, and observing the loss of grace in society. It's a very heartwarming conversation. Enjoy! His play Canaan Unremembered opened March 24th at the Court Square Theater in Long Island City, New York and runs through April 19th, 2025. In Part 7 of the David Michael Crawford Serial Arson Case, we address the final name on Crawford's "target list" found by investigators in his phone. The entry simply read "Evelyn 2" which sounds as benign as a dinner reservation. However, this entry represents a living nightmare for one Howard County family. Crawford was charged with attempting to kill them in their home by burning it down while they slept. He was convicted of attempted murder but his case is currently pending appeal in Maryland. This week we continue the saga of the David Michael Crawford serial arson case. Today we dig deep into family drama that allegedly resulted in three separate fires targeting a single family. The most shocking part is that the family targeted was that of David Crawford's own stepson. But the drama doesn't end here. Crawford's own daughter has some really insane allegations to lob at her father that have nothing to do with the serial arson case. This already unbelievable case is about to go completely off the rails. In a lively discussion, E. David Crawford, MD (University of Colorado), explains the controversy around prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test screening. The National Cancer Institute describes the PSA controversy as follows: “Using the PSA test to screen men for prostate cancer is controversial because it is not yet known for certain whether this test actually saves lives.”Also, regular contributor Dr. MedLaw addresses how to handle when you find yourself at odds with an insurance company over the decision to settle a malpractice lawsuit. While many doctors may express a desire to go to trial in the face of a malpractice lawsuit, seeking vindication and clearing their name, the reality is that the majority of these cases settle out of court. On the other hand, a doctor who is eager to put the matter behind them may feel pressured into settling. So, how does a doctor navigate the situation when they find themselves at odds with their insurance company over the decision to settle?Enjoy listening!PS: Stay tuned for next week! Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee. David says that the music chose him because he has the type of voice that can sing opera and fill a 4,000 seat theater without a microphone. Frank's parents went to operas and Broadway shows. Frank and his wife saw a notice on the Roku screensaver to click and watch the musical Heathers. He was confused by the character Veronica and was waiting for the mean girls who say “fetch” and sing “Santa Baby.” When the mean Heathers came into the cafeteria, he realized his mistake. David recommends watching Shrek the Musical starring Sutton Foster. David's daughter has been in several local productions, taking after her parents. David's wife is actress Laura Beth Wells. Frank was driving behind a school bus on Middlebrook Pike and was surprised when the bus stopped in front of Food City. Two kids got out and walked to cars in the Food City parking lot. Frank and his wife Jere buy gift cards at the supermarket to get extra gas points. They pass the nozzle to fill both cars on the same discount. They were supposed to meet at the gas station. Frank's GPS said he would get there two minutes before the gas station closed at 10:00 p.m. Shortly after he pulled up alongside Jere's car, the gas station attendant turned out the lights at 9:58 p.m. David and his daughter Lily went to the library shortly before closing. Lily asked the librarians for recommendations as the staff was starting to turn out the lights. Frank and his wife used to make back-to-back appointments at the optometrist. When Frank called to make appointments, he was told the doctor had a new policy prohibiting family members from having adjacent appointments. Frank is convinced that he is the cause for the new policy. David thinks that Frank and Jere might need to have their eyes dilated. Frank accidentally spilled rubbing alcohol on his leg while cleaning Jere's Fitbit. He assumed it would evaporate but he should have washed it off. The next day he had a rash from the chemical burn caused by the alcohol. It was almost as bad as the time he went to the bathroom after chopping jalapeno peppers. David is wearing a Darth Vader t-shirt. Frank mentions the meme comparing Darth Vader without his helmet to Billy Joel playing a harmonica. Frank often looks for Billy Joel news to mention on 104.9 LakeFM. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee. Frank tells David about Taylor Swift's cover of “September.” She sings “Do you remember the 28th night of September.” Earth, Wind & Fire sing about the 21st of September, which is nine months before Frank's birthday. Frank enjoyed watching David in the Metropolitan Opera production of Rigoletto, set in Rat-Pack era Las Vegas. David wore a custom-made jacket. HBO's Behind the Candelabra also wanted the fabric. David played Angelotti in Marble City Opera's production of Tosca. Marble City Opera's upcoming shows are Heartbreak Express, The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace, and Susannah. David has a full-time job as a lecturer and coach in vocal performance at UT. He hints about an appearance in an opera this season. Frank has a theory that WCBS-FM in New York plays extra Billy Joel songs because he is local to the area. He also thinks that other classic hits stations around the country base their playlists on the Joel-heavy playlist of WCBS. Frank and his wife Jere went to a late dinner at a restaurant with a popular bar. They thought they heard a terrible karaoke singer but it turned out to be an entertainer playing his keyboard and singing Billy Joel and Elton John songs. David likes to sing “Baby Got Back” when doing karaoke. David likes watching Emmanuel the Emu on YouTube. The videos originally appeared on TikTok. Frank thinks he gets more than enough emu on YouTube because of Liberty Mutual's commercials. Frank associates LMU with Lincoln Memorial University. Their team name is the Railsplitters and their mascot is Abe, as in Lincoln. The team name at David's high school was the Fighting Quakers, which was changed to the Hustling Quakers. His college's team was the Battling Bishops. He then went to a university with a team named the Terriers. Frank's theory is that team mascots should be predators like the Hawks but not the Doves. David suggests a team named the Vultures. David saw a dove with a smaller bird in its talons. Frank was the emcee for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge at the Tennessee Valley Fair. There seemed to be an unusually large number of volunteers eager to help with the doughnuts. He thought he was being recognized by a viewer or listener but it turned out to be his backyard neighbor. Several teenagers have started cutting through Frank's yard from the neighboring subdivision. A homeowner from the other subdivision came up the hill to ask if they were Frank's kids because they also cut through his yard. This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Re:Hope West End - Week 3 of our mini-series on the ‘Lessons from Paul'. David Crawford, Elder at Re:Hope, speaks to us about sharing faith.
Frank Murphy's friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth and her husband David Crawford like to say “Roadhouse” if someone loses their train of thought. David is an opera singer. Frank appeared with David in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's Clayton Holiday Concerts in December, 2018. David likes to tease Frank whenever he hears a Billy Joel song on the radio. Frank has a theory that radio stations around the country are influenced by the playlist of WCBS-FM in New York City, which might play extra Billy Joel songs because he is a New Yorker. Laura Beth likes Billy Joel music even though her husband does not. David and Laura Beth heard several Billy Joel songs on a Queen-themed online station. Frank asks if she's seen the unflattering meme comparing a picture of Billy Joel to a photo of Darth Vader without his helmet. Frank became an Elvis fan years after Elvis died. He produced a live radio broadcast from Graceland on the tenth anniversary of the death of Elvis. Frank and his wife Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to D&B Hot Dogs to get a “Loaded Elvis Pocket” which was a banana in a hot dog bun with a layer of peanut butter and topped with marshmallow creme, chocolate syrup, and peanuts. Laura Beth and David like to order a crispy-crust pizza from Little Nicky's New York Pizza, two doors down from the hot dog restaurant. Frank met the owners of Little Nicky's several years ago at an ex-New Yorkers meet-up where pizza and Drake's Cakes were served. Laura Beth was in a commercial for Drake's Devil Dogs. Frank likes to buy a box of Devil Dogs when he is close enough to New York to find them. The commercial also featured a guy in a drake costume. A drake is a male duck. Frank tells Laura Beth about visiting Parrot Mountain for an upcoming See More Smokies Insider Edition episode. Frank and Artie and Kathryn Frady each got to hold three birds. A cockatoo named Tydee wanted to stay on Frank's shoulder and lick the sweat off his forehead. After recording two episodes in Pigeon Forge, Frank and Jere needed to take Artie someplace for dinner. They found long waits at The Old Mill Restaurant and at Downtown Flavortown. Laura Beth says the longest she will wait at a restaurant is half an hour. She was baffled by the long lines at the Shake Shack when she was performing on Broadway. Frank remembered that Junction 35 Spirits has a restaurant attached to its distillery. Frank, Jere, and Artie were seated immediately and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The waiter left a serving pitcher of water on their table, which was extremely helpful. Frank promised Artie they could roast Marshmallow Peeps after Jere cooked chicken on the smoker. Artie wanted to make s'mores but they didn't have any candy bars. Frank suggested he could try using chocolate syrup instead. The roasted Peeps have a caramelized sugar shell on the outside and softened marshmallow inside. Laura Beth and her daughter Lily did a taste-test of flavored Marshmallow Peeps, including cinnamon flavor, which they liked. Frank has tried Peeps-flavored things including a Peeps-flavored Slurpee, which tasted terrible. Frank mentions that former news anchor Kristin Farley enjoys Peeps and posts photos of her favorites. Frank saw an online ad for a broadcast of a newer production of Rigoletto set in 1920s Europe. The ad had an incorrect photo, showing a production of Rigoletto set in 1960s Las Vegas from season 40 of Great Performances. Laura Beth's husband David played Ceprano in the Vegas “rat pack” version. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Candi Staton and others celebrate this 1970's disco classic which delivers an optimistic message. Written by David Crawford and released in 1976 this is the kind of song that feels like a carefree celebration, something to lose yourself in on the dancefloor. But its story isn't quite so simple. As Candi tells Soul Music, Young Hearts Run Free was influenced by her own troubled and abusive relationship which she struggled to leave. In fact the creation of the song helped her gain the confidence to finally walk away. Other contributors are: Singer songwriter, Glen Hansard. He performs the song 'as' his mother because it reminds him so much of what the song meant to her. Ziggi Battles , a singer who chose to cover the song as a way of rejoicing in the role it played in recovering from a very difficult time. Jason Gilkison, the Creative Director of Strictly Come Dancing. It will forever remind him of the first time he choreographed a group dance for Strictly at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. His grandfather had danced there himself as a young man, before establishing the first dance school in Perth, Australia, which is where Jason developed his own love of ballroom dancing. Neil Brand, composer and broadcaster, analyses why the piece works musically. He also describes the pure joy of a version by Kym Mazelle and - unlikely as it seems - the actor and opera singer, Paul Sorvino. It was used as the soundtrack to the ballroom scene in Baz Luhrmann's film of Romeo and Juliet. Versions used: Candi Staton; Glen Hansard; Maz O'Connor; Ziggi Battles; Gloria Estefan; Kym Mazelle; Kym Mazelle (Ballroom Version) with Paul Sorvino Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Karen Gregor

Prostate markers continue to make a remarkable impact on the world of prostate cancer by helping to individualize patient care in the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment choices for prostate cancer. In episode six of the Prostate Health Podcast, we had an informative interview with Dr. E. David Crawford about the various scenarios in which prostate markers can get used for providing men with more information to guide them in their decision-making. In that episode, we discussed various scenarios around the early detection of cancer, where prostate cancer biomarkers can help triage patients at risk for prostate cancer by identifying the patients who may truly benefit from a biopsy versus those who may safely avoid it. Given the importance of those markers, we thought it would be beneficial to re-air the interview today. Dr. Crawford remains an international pioneer in the early detection and management of prostate cancer. Dr. Pohlman had the unique opportunity to train with Dr. Crawford during his residency training at the University of Colorado Hospital. Show Highlights: Dr. Crawford talks about tests, other than the PSA, which are now available for patients for the early detection of prostate cancer. The PSA is a great test, and it's our first line of defense against prostate cancer, but it's not perfect. So although it is a way to detect prostate cancer, it still needs to be more refined. Biomarkers have become a game-changer. Dr. Crawford explains where they are playing a big role in the early detection of prostate cancer. Biomarkers can be from the urine, serum, tissue, and other modalities. Urine or tissue-based biomarkers are mainly used to detect prostate cancer. If you have a SelectMDx test and it comes back negative, there's a ninety-eight percent chance that you don't have aggressive prostate cancer. Some of these tests are covered by medical insurance companies. Dr. Crawford talks about biopsies and he explains what the ConfirmMDx test does. Some tests that might help to determine who would be at low risk for cancer and might benefit from some active surveillance, versus someone who would need treatment, after having had a positive biopsy. Dr. Crawford discusses the tests and treatments for patients who have tested positive for low-grade cancers. What the future holds for the testing and treatment of prostate cancer. Genetics is a hot topic right now. Dr. Crawford talks about genetics, genomics, germline mutations, and the treatment of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is still the most common cancer in men.
