Columbia's CALE school on West Nifong was founded by Dr. Susan Deakins and Dr. Jill Brown three years ago, starting with ten students. Dr. Deakins and Dr. Brown joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. They say the school now has 81 students, because parents know there is a need. CALE is officially called Columbia Academy for Learning and Enrichment, and it's open five days a week. Dr. Deakins and Dr. Brown describe it as a microschool, noting the school takes a multi-age approach. Dr. Deakins grew up in Columbia and earned her undergraduate and master's degrees at Central Methodist in Fayette. She graduated from Mizzou with a specialty and earned her doctorate at William Woods in Fulton. Dr. Brown grew up in mid-Missouri's Fulton, and graduated from Westminster in Fulton. She earned her doctorate from Mizzou. Dr. Brown has taught in Jefferson City and in rural Prairie Home and has been a principal at Russell Boulevard elementary school in Columbia and at South Callaway. She's also worked as a broker at Edward Jones in St. Louis. Mr. Parry, a former Boone County commissioner, describes the school as an excellent educational opportunity in our community. Dr. Deakins and Dr. Brown tell listeners they have an excellent faculty. They also say one of the main challenges Columbia Public Schools (CPS) faces in size. CPS' Michelle Baumstark says CPS's August first-day enrollment was 19,157. CPS is currently Missouri's fourth-largest school district, with enrollment skyrocketing by more than 2,000 students in the past 12 years:

It's Die Hard in a desert! This week on the show, Phil and Liam discuss John Woo's 1996 action bonanza BROKEN ARROW starring John Travolta and Christian Slater! This is a film that Phil deeply loves and is fiercely protective of, which makes for an interesting conversation when Liam poses the thesis question: can a film be both “dumb” and transcendent at the same time? Together, the boys aim to find the answer! While flying a stealth bomber over the Utah desert as part of a secret military exercise, Air Force Major Vic Deakins (Travolta) attacks his friend and co-pilot Captain Riley Hale (Slater), causing the aircraft to crash. Hale survives, and with the help of intrepid park ranger Terry Carmichael (Samantha Mathis), he comes to realize that the psychotic Deakins is involved in an elaborate plan to steal the plane's nuclear missiles and ransom them back to the US government.Although it may not seem like it on face value, this film is actually full to the brim with ‘DIE HARD DNA'. It also has a number of notable connections to DIE HARD 2, as well as other iconic 90s movies such as UNDER SIEGE, SPEED and even PULP FICTION. The guys unpack all of this, while gushing over their mutual love for John Woo - the great choreographer of chaos - and musing on the notion that BROKEN ARROW might actually be a musical in disguise. They also discuss Travolta's outlandish performance, Hans Zimmer's striking score, and the stellar supporting cast, among many other topics. The show culminates with a hard-fought edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', followed by a challenging edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! Prepare to go ballistic! BROKEN ARROW trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-C4rJM-9QU At the time of release, BROKEN ARROW is streaming on Fubo and FXNow and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango, Spectrum, AMC On Demand and all the usual platforms. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. I mean, Deakins, man...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! "And this guy peed on it." We wrap our mini series of looking at the iconic cinematographer, Roger Deakins, with the cult classic from 1998, "The Big Lebowski." In accordance with the tenets of his duderness, this episode is chill AF. We talk about how non-traditionally this flick reached cult status, and how John Goodman's Walter Sobchak is the MVP. Of course, we discuss the lived-in warmth this movie has visually, and how obviously that is thanks in part to Deakins' masterful handiwork. Stay tuned, because next month we're mixing things up a bit! We're bringing back co-host Ryan to discuss our first ever book-into-movie discussion, starting with "Marley & Me." "If you fail, it will be a massacre." The Uncultured Universe continues to look at the people who bring a film to life, with this month's focus being on the cinematographer synonymous with the profession: Roger Deakins. To kick off the series, we watched the 2019 war epic, "1917." The boys pore over the realities of war, the neurodivergent tendencies of reacting emotionally to powerful and sweeping scores and cinematic moments, and the sheer awesomeness that this limited-cut/seemingly one-take masterpiece accomplishes. And of course, massive gushing over how damn good this flick looks, of course thanks in part to Deakins himself. Be sure to stay tuned for our next episode, where we go in the complete opposite direction of war, and look at another Deakin's classic "The Big Lebowski."--We are Uncultured Universe - the podcast where two friends show each other movies, tv, music, or anything else to get a little more cultured. Charlotte Sometimes and George Wood (freelance film writers) join Flixwatcher to review Charlotte's choice Sicario. Sicario (2015) is the seventh feature film from director Denis Villeneuve. It stars Emily Blunt as Kate Macer, an FBI Special Agent recruited by Josh Brolin's Matt Graver, a CIA officer, as a technical necessity so the CIA can operate in Mexico, outside the US border. Benicio del Toro plays Alejandro Gillick, a former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin with a specialism in torture. Also starring in an early role is Daniel Kaluuya as Reggie Wayne, a rookie FBI Special Agent and Kate's partner. Sicario, Spanish for ‘hitman', features strong performances and some incredible but tense set pieces. It is not an easy watch, due to the content and the unrelenting bleakness. The cinematography by Roger Deakins and score by Jóhann Jóhannsson are highlights in the darkness of the content. Scores for recommendability reflected the harsh subject matter, it is a technical achievement but lacking in emotion and human connection. The love for Deakins and Jóhannsson also reflected the small screen scores and Sicario scores 3.63 overall. I begin by talking about writing the second draft of my fantasy script and the first draft of my 2nd non fiction book (a filmmaking how to book). There's specifics I share about each process, but the similarity between both is the idea of testing ideas in the early stages where it's cheap to try things. After, I talk about fostering a sweet pup named Diamond (she is available for adoption), seeing the new Indiana Jones movie on Screen X and some of the incredible stories from director Matt Reeves on making Cloverfield (shared during his appearance on Team Deakins: https://teamdeakins.libsyn.com/matt-reeves-director). On this PPN Camera and Inspiration episode, Marco invited the inspiring photographer, author, and YouTuber Sean Tucker who has been on Marco's interview wishlist the longest and who has been requested to be a guest the most by PPN listeners. Sean was invited to this show because Marco had the feeling, that we all could use an inspirational jump-start right now, to get our creativity going and to either level up on current projects or to get inspired to start new photo projects. This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Sean picked Canadian-born photographer Joey Lawrence (Joey L.). Sean is impressed by how tasteful Joey creates his portraits and how meaningful his work is. Joey has some personal projects like the tribes of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia, the guerrilla fighters of Kurdistan, and Holy Men in India, where he mixes natural light and strobes to create very striking images. You can find out more about Joey L.'s work by visiting his website: http://joeyl.com Here are some behind-the-scenes videos of the three photo projects:: http://joeyl.com/onset/videos Motivation to pick up your camera and start new photo projects: In the main segment of this show, Sean shared different approaches to get in the right mindset to think about new projects or to level up on existing projects. Making friends with change and “embracing the suck” is part of the process, that helps us to explore and expand our mental, creative, and technical mindset for future photo projects. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Sean's pick: “BYWAYS” Photographs by Roger A. Deakins. Sean is inspired by Rager A. Deakins as he is one of his favorite cinematographers who has done some of the most beautiful films of the last 20 years. Deakins' photos in this book are from rural North Devon and the neighboring seaside dating back as far as 1971. Sean likes the way Deakins frames his images with the same eye that he has when he composes his movies - but without the famous actors and lighting setup. So it is like the purest version of his vision to Sean. The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 160 pages Amazon US: amzn.to/43eROAq Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/43DNURv Marco's pick: “The Meaning in the Making (A Philosophy - for the Creative Life)” by Sean Tucker. Known for his camera work on films like "The Shawshank Redemption," "No Country for Old Men," "Blade Runner 2049," and "1917," Deakins is also, as his book "Byways" makes clear, a brilliant and perceptive B&W photographer.
Sicario: Day Of The Soldado holds a 62% score on RottenTomatoes (vs. the first film at 92%). Roger Deakins and Josh Brolin agreed in a podcast interview that it was more action-based than character-driven. My perhaps controversial opinion is that Sicario: Day of the Soldado is to the first Sicario as The Godfather Part II is to The Godfather (bolder, darker, requires repeat viewings to access, but might be even better). I make the case in this episode. Come back to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for the best film recommendations. This episode offers a career-spanning chat with Oscar-winning cinematographer, Sir Roger Deakins, and his wife/longtime collaborator, James Deakins. Known for his collaborations with Coen brothers (Fargo), Sam Mendes (1917), and Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), Deakins began his life in film as a still photographer. He published his first-ever book of photographs, "Byways," in late 2021. The EEOC is denying employers' FOIA requests for the EEOC's charge investigation files when resulting employment claims are proceeding in arbitration rather than litigation. Our panel will discuss whether the EEOC's justifications for denying such FOIA requests are consistent with FOIA and other governing federal statutes. We will consider a number of related issues. What is the EEOC's basis for treating litigation and arbitration differently in responding to employers' FOIA requests? How long has the EEOC been making this distinction between litigation and arbitration? In light of the increasing prevalence of employment arbitration, should employers challenge the EEOC's FOIA practices and, if so, how?Featuring:-- Janet Dhillon, Commissioner, EEOC-- Eric Dreiband, Partner, Jones Day-- Moderator: Christopher C. Excellent narration from a bevy of capable narrators enhances Maggie Shipstead's incisive collection of 10 short stories. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss the collection that showcases Shipstead's work and breadth of characters from stories written over the past decade. Alex McKenna's rendition of an actor breaking away from a cult is especially memorable. Shipstead's complex, flawed characters aren't altogether likable, but the author has pulled together a sharp and likable collection indeed. The “Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act” amended the Federal Arbitration Act to bar mandatory employment arbitration agreements covering sexual harassment and sexual assault claims. This program will feature Prof. Alexander J.S. Colvin and G. Roger King who testified before Congress as the legislation was being considered (see here and here respectively, for their written testimony). The panel will discuss the new statute, its intended purposes, and its impact more broadly on mandatory employment arbitration. The program will also cover why sexual harassment and assault claims, in particular, have been excluded from mandatory arbitration. Will this exclusion for such claims remain unique under the FAA or will it lead towards a ban on mandatory arbitration for employment claims generally? How does the Act connect to the more general issue of class, collective, and joint action waivers in predispute arbitration, and will the Act impact the mass filing strategy that plaintiff side firms are increasingly using?Featuring:Prof. Alexander J.S. Isaac and Cameron continue their conversation about Roger Deakins with this modern military classic staring Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is a perfect representation of Deakins mastery, with painting-like framing, staging, and lighting. Jamie Fox has a standout performance, but still, the film is surprisingly forgotten with all of its influence. Plus, Cameron talks about documentaries he has watched while Isaac brings up how he is exploring Game of Thrones Season 2. In this episode of Career Can Do, Mary Ann Faremouth chats with Merritt Chastain, who is Director of the National Association of Pipe Coating Applicators, the organization responsible for promoting a higher standard of pipeline coating quality. He is also a shareholder at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. NAPCA was founded out of concern for the integrity of pipelines, because an insecure pipeline could result in large explosions and potentially billions of dollars in losses. They focused on standardizing the industry: they educated pipeline companies and contractors about the benefits of having a plan applied coating and how much better it could protect their investment. Due to NAPCA's dedication to ensuring premium quality and their approach to training, their employees are always in alignment with all the policies and procedures that prevent safety and quality issues. Being a member of NAPCA gives you an advantage, whether you are a company or candidate. Relationships have always been important in every industry, but the current pandemic has revealed to organizations the importance of prioritizing them, both internally and externally. NAPCA has been ahead of the game in this regard for decades. Resources Faremouth.com Merritt Chastain on LinkedIn NAPCA.com

“I can't afford to be here, but I can't afford not to be here.” I've reflected on that statement since I heard it from my office neighbor. Fast forward more than 27 years and there's a discussion in the Rosen Institute premium member section about real estate. (We talk 24/7 on Slack about everything. It's useful at many levels and always comforting to know that we're not alone when we need help). One member asked how much others are spending (as a percentage of their budget) on work accommodations – whether they rent an office, own a building, work remotely, etc. Some members reported spending as little as three percent. Some are spending more. I was struck by the low numbers. For some members, the low percentage could reflect soaring revenues. In fact, one member told me that was the case. For others, the low percentage could just mean cheap space. Can't Afford Not to be Here? I heard the quote above from Dave, my office neighbor, the day I moved into our beautiful space back in 1990. He later became my accountant and friend. He sold his very successful practice some years back. I had just moved into the office building and it was expensive. My buddy was in a big suite next door and he was spending even more. We started talking about the rent. It was high, but this building was nice. It was brand new, Class A space, built with the finest materials. Some very high-end national law firm (Ogletree, Deakins), consulting (McKinsey & Company), and banking executives consumed most of the building. Dave said, “I can't afford to be here, and I can't afford not to be here.” I was young and naïve, and I had to get my dad to personally guarantee the lease. So I wasn't really sure what Dave meant. He pontificated - as he was wont to do - and made three points: 1. The space is expensive. It's more expensive than most spaces in the city. Having a premier address in a high-end building doesn't come cheaply. 2. The expensive location sends a message. The message gets broadcast by others. It tells clients that you're successful. It tells them that you have other clients supporting the business and they can trust you because others trust you. We all know lawyers who whistle out loud when they hear that a particular firm has moved into a particular building. It gets people talking. 3. The physical space builds trust because it projects power. When clients show up in a nice building, they sense they've come to the right place to see the right people. It's not an accident that throughout history the rich and powerful have sequestered themselves in massive, impressive structures (before and after death). They use physical space to take and keep power. Office space, while not the only way to build trust, is one quick way to do it. It may not be logical, but humans love a good building. Recently, I stood on the sidewalk with a lawyer, in front of her office. Her space was built out nicely and took up a corner of a pleasant two-story building in a pleasant area. The space was great, but it's not a building people talk about, think about, or notice. She pointed down the street to a towering office building in the center of the downtown area. She commented that lawyers in those buildings charged twice as much as she did for the “exact same service.” She couldn't understand why clients were willing to pay more for the same thing. What if it's the Building? What if spending six or twelve percent on rent, instead of three percent, means doubling your revenue? Unless you're bad at math, you should be able to see that leasing pricier space is sometimes a smart move. That's what Dave meant when he said, “I can't afford to be here, but I can't afford not to be here.” Every firm has a different position in the market. That position is driven by the vision of the owner and the execution of a strategic plan. Every firm approaches the market differently. High-end space isn't useful for many firms. Expensive space could actually damage a firm's strategic position. Office space has a marketing impact and needs to be consistent with the overall objective of the business. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to office space. There are as many approaches to office space as there are lawyers and clients. Personally, I've modified my approach over the years. I've shifted as we've changed our ideal client and marketing message. We still pay for some Class A space, but we use far less of it by… Outsourcing the majority of our work Shifting the team members to remote work styles Encouraging everyone to distribute geographically. We've found that in today's market, a combination of physical space with modern technology and remote work sends the right message to our target clients. Notice that today's most valuable companies balance their amazing physical spaces (think Apple) with their existence in the ether (think Google). Things change, but they also stay the same. Our approach is right for us. That doesn't mean it's the right approach for you. You need to find the right match between your vision, objectives, clients, messaging, and budget. You need to think about what your space says. Your Space Sends a Message Make sure it's the right message for you and your clients. Your office space will be considered, discussed, and experienced by your clients. It'll either build trust or diminish trust. It is never neutral. Discussing the percentage a firm spends on office space, without context and an understanding of how the space serves the business's objectives, isn't particularly useful. Office space is more than a place to gather your team or meet clients. Office space is a message, a feeling, a conversation, and a factor in building and sustaining trust.
