That's right, folks. The ride is sadly over, as your gracious hosts bid you adieu after three years of episodes covering the best of Knoxville soccer.Over that time, we've chronicled the birth and rise of One Knoxville SC and spoken to some legends of the local game, including youth coach Junior Santos, former Lady Vol and broadcaster Tori Beeler-Watson, eventual NCAA D1 national champions Taylor Huff and Brian Pensky, Maryville College head coach Pepe Fernandez (3x!), and current USL Championship professional Tyler Gibson. We covered Bearden girls' soccer's run to a second consecutive state title, powered by the current Florida Gator Brinley Murphy. We tried time after time to devise new ways to engage our listeners, including a merch store that, unfortunately, went nowhere. After a solid run, the revenue was simply not there to continue moving forward. But the door is not fully closed. Who knows what's next? For now, listen in as we take you back through our favorite moments of the podcast and predict what's to come as we, for the last time, attempt to answer the fateful question: is Knoxville really a soccer town?Listen to our full archive of episodes.Thank you, as always, to Markman's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry.Markman's is a proud sponsor of the Knox Soccer Podcast and One Knoxville SC. A professor at Maryville College in Tennessee, Dr. Locklin shares the incredible journey behind her collaborative project exploring the unsolved case of the Night Marauder, a serial killer who terrorized East Tennessee in the 1920s. From engaging her students in deep research to uncovering long-forgotten community stories, Dr. Locklin's work sheds light on how the absence of modern conveniences like air conditioning, internet, and advanced forensics shaped life—and crime—in early 20th-century Appalachia. (Learn more about her work and connect at TheNightMarauderProject.com/ Dr. Locklin also delves into her broader academic journey, including her work on an 18th-century French murder trial, and how her training in historical violence informed her sensitivity to survivor stories. You Will Learn: Engaged Learning Brings History to Life: Dr. Laughlin empowered her students to lead research efforts, building not only their academic skills but also their connection to local history. This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Lea Mulligan. Lea' s trail running results read like a highly successful 40 year old runner except she is 25 years old. Lea was born and raised in Chattanooga and has enjoyed exploring the woods since she was a little kid. She ran cross country since she was 8 years old and got introduced to the Ultra-Running world when she was in high school. Since she was young, Lea was inspired by her mom's running career and loved sweeping events with her as a teenager. Lea completed her first 50K, Run Amok, her senior year in highschool, and she has been hooked on trail running since then. After running cross country at Maryville College and exploring the Smokies for 4 years, She decided she wanted to be more competitive with trail running. Lea signed up for Pinhoti 100 in 2021 and loved every piece of the 100 distance ranging from the snacks to the wonderful community. Working as an elementary school teacher has allowed her to explore trails all over the US in the summertime, and she spent this last summer living out of a minivan in Colorado training for CCC 100K in France. Frank Murphy is joined by Eden Carnes, who designed wigs and face paint for an upcoming production of Cats by the Primary Players Children's Theater Group. Eoin Faller as Bill Bailey Zee Carnes as Admetus Tristan Hall as Munkustrap Gianna Lombardo as Etcetera Eden first met Frank at an improv workshop in Pigeon Forge. Frank thought he went there to take the class but ended up as the assistant instructor. Frank was surprised when Eden was in the cast of The Nutcracker in Oak Ridge and was a contestant on East Tennessee PBS Scholars' Bowl. Frank once interviewed Eden when she received a congressional medal for community service. Eden plans to attend school for naval architecture and marine engineering on Long Island, New York. Frank surmises that Eden wants to be close to the theaters on Broadway. Frank urges Eden to avoid watching Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera. In it, the Phantom has moved to Coney Island and tricks Christine into coming to New York. Tristan sings an excerpt of “The Old Gumbie Cat.” Frank thinks he resembles Peter Criss of KISS. Frank's friend Kristen Detrow wants to see a photo of Eden putting cat make-up on Frank. Kristen responded, “Rawr.” Frank was once an honorary Hogette. The Hogettes were super-fans of the offensive line of the Washington Redskins in the 1980s. In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Spencer Clancy, the System Director for Talent Development and Culture for CHRISTUS Health. Spencer talks about the impact mentors have had on his career trajectory. Watch to learn how important mentors are to creating the next generation of leaders. Spencer has had many mentors throughout his life both spiritual and professional. He met his first mentor during graduate school who helped him land an internship. This opportunity allowed him to pursue what he wanted to do later in his career. Through the amazing mentoring of this individual, he went into his first leadership position at The Vincit Group. From there, he met an individual working as a leader at CHRISTUS Health, and they talked about their career paths. It was because of this conversation that he was offered an opportunity at CHRISTUS HEALTH. Even though he couldn't commit to the job at the time he was still amazed at the organization's leaders. When he was given another chance to join the company he didn't hesitate to accept. It was at CHRISTUS HEALTH that he met his two new mentors, Lisa Reynolds and Karen Hale. These two leaders showed Spencer what true leadership was through example. They taught Spencer that his initial thoughts on leadership were completely different from true leadership. These leaders always put their teams first and were consistently there for their teams. Spencer used the insights he learned from his mentors for his first formal leadership position at CHRISTUS HEALTH. Spencer found that this leadership style applied to more than just leaders in the professional world. He eventually saw faith as more than just something he learned at school. This was possible through the help of his spiritual mentor, Josh. He helped Spencer look deeply into his faith and to read scripture solely because he wanted to know more. Spencer hopes to do the same for other individuals who are in the same situation. Now, he joins us on the Virtuous Heroes Podcast to talk with us. His insights will allow viewers to become true leaders by learning the importance of mentoring.More about our guest: Spencer leads a team of learning & development professionals focused on creating moments that matter for their Leaders and Associates.Specialties: leadership development strategy, performance management strategy, design and implementation of employee development programs, project management, education design, and program facilitation.Spencer received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Maryville College. Spencer then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------https://www.linkedin.com/in/spencerclancy/https://www.christushealth.org/

On social media after the announcement that One Knoxville would play the majority of its home games in Maryville, some folks questioned why the team would venture a 20-minute ride down the road in Blount County. What I (Brian) knew from my year of covering Maryville College men’s and women’s soccer in 2014 for The Daily Times was that Pepe Fernandez had been one of the sport’s familiar faces in East Tennessee for more than three decades. In 2015, when I wrote a magazine story about the culture and history of indoor soccer in Knoxville, we sat down for the first time, in his office, and talked about his time as both a coach at Maryville and for the Knoxville Force as well as a player for the Knoxville Impact, a semi-pro indoor soccer team from the ‘90s.In 33 seasons at the helm of Maryville College, Fernandez has won four USA South Tournament titles and led the men and women to 16 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. He is ranked in the Top 10 for wins all-time in men’s DIII soccer. In this interview, we discuss:Why Pepe’s first name is not pronounced how you expect it to beHis history of playing soccer for Father Ryan High School, in the defunct Dixie Amateur Soccer League, and for Tennessee WesleyanWhat brought him and has kept him at Maryville College for more than three decadesHis and his current and former players’ contributions to soccer in the communityHis favorite coaching memoriesWhat makes soccer such a special sportWhether or not Knoxville is a soccer townEnjoy!Fernandez’s Maryville College bioOne Knoxville’s game scheduleThanks for listening! Reverend Joshua Noah is a child of God, a father of 3 amazing kids, a partner to Lawrence, a son, a brother, a friend, a spiritual listener, and an ordained pastor in the PCUSA (Presbyterian Church of the USA). He currently works as a full-time bartender and part-time pastor along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Josh grew up in north Alabama where he attended conservative, evangelical/fundamentalist Southern Baptist Churches. When he was a teenager, his disillusionment with the hypocrisy of people in the church led him to declare himself an atheist. While attending Maryville College (a PCUSA affiliated school in East Tennessee) Josh discovered his faith again and at 26, was baptized into the PCUSA church. Following a 11 year teaching career, Josh answered the Spirit's call to ministry and attended Princeton Theological Seminary where he earned his M.Div. and M.A. in Christian Education (emphasis in Ministry with Young People). This episode of the Ground Shots Podcast features a conversation with craftsfolk Brien Beidler and Mary Sullivan at the off-grid rural Idaho homestead of Jim Croft and Melody Eckroft during their summer 2019 ‘Old Ways of Making Books' class. Brien, Mary and I sat down at the end of a three week workshop period where we all had different roles as both teachers and students during Jim and Melody's yearly or bi-yearly ‘Old Ways of Making Books' class. Brien and Mary are highly skilled bookbinders who came to assist Jim Croft and also continue to learn and be mentored by him. I've mentioned the old ways class on the podcast several times and posted about it on the blog over the years. Alyssa Sacora and I talk about the Old Ways class on the podcast, here. I posted a photo diary three years ago of my time at Jim and Melody's homestead, here. I posted a recent photo diary documenting the hide tanning portion of the class from this summer, here. ********************************************* From the beginning, Brien Beidler has been inspired by historic bindings, and is consistently delighted by their ability to harmonize fine craftsmanship, quirky but elegant aesthetics, and evidence of the hands that made them. Though traditionally structured and bound with integrity, Brien's bindings seek ways to create new compositions and juxtapositions of these historic precedents. Naturally, a healthy love of the tools of the trade followed suit, and with the generosity and encouragement of toolmaking legends Jim Croft and Shanna Leino, Brien also creates a limited assortment of specialized hand tools for bookbinding and its related trades. Over the last nine years Brien has taken and taught a variety of bookbinding and toolmaking workshops, and is an active member of the Guild of Book Workers. In the fall of 2016, he and his wife upped their roots in Charleston, South Carolina and set up shop in Bloomington, Indiana, where Brien works from his home studio with Wren, his curmudgeonly Brittany. ***************************************** Mary Sullivan grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and was one of those children who always seemed to be making something. After completing her BA in Fine Art from Maryville College in 2006 she worked as a designer and printer at the legendary Hatch Show Print, one of the country's oldest continually operating letterpress poster shops in Nashville, TN. After several years absorbing the history, materials, and tools of the trade she left Nashville temporarily to pursue an MFA in book arts at the renowned University of Iowa Center for the Book in Iowa City, Iowa. Over the next 3 years she studied bookbinding, paper-making, printmaking, calligraphy, and book repair and was taught by some of the most respected practitioners in my field. Upon completing her MFA in Book Arts in 2014, she moved back to her hometown in Nashville and founded Crowing Hens Bindery, where she designs, makes, and sells everything from blank books to letterpress printed stationery, decorative papers, art prints, and tools; all made by hand, one at a time. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: how Brien and Mary met the bookbinder and papermaker Jim Croft and how he affected their relationships to bookbinding, printmaking, papermaking, and craft in general. how learning about bookbinding and craft processes at Jim and Melody's homestead in northern Idaho is unique because of their land-based lifestyle how Jim Croft's books are modeled after medieval era books, but are unique to him and the landscape of northern Idaho the scavenge nature of Jim Croft's craft process Brien talks about his focus on bookbinding, toolmaking etc. and his preference for making his books and tools accessible Mary speaks on her work of bookbinding, printing, and art making; as well as her graduate school research on paper-making production how industrialization affects the slow craft of bookbinding especially when using materials from the land and doing the process by hand and with the focus of quality books in mind the effects industrialization has on the consumer's expectations of perfectionism, something that didn't always exist in bookbinding and paper-making historically some bookbinding history the responsibility of carrying on the trade of bookbinding and not losing the knowledge of how to make different styles of books how capitalism affects our understanding and treatment of books some talk on the value of art vs. craft in our culture Links: Jim and Melody's website, where you can contact them about future classes out in Idaho (calling or writing letters is best): https://cargocollective.com/oldway Brien's website: https://www.beidlermade.com/ Brien's instagram: @bhbeidler http://www.instagram.com/bhbeidler Mary's website: https://www.crowinghensbindery.com/ Mary's instagram: @crowinghensbindery http://www.instagram.com/crowinghensbindery Penland School of Craft: https://penland.org/ Friends of Dard Hunter paper-making conference: https://friendsofdardhunter.org/conference University of Iowa Center for the Book: https://www.iowacenterforthebook.org Support the podcast on Patreon to contribute to our grassroots self-funding of this project.
