The official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema in London! Consider this an audio guide to the programme of your favourite independent cinema, as told by the people who help run the place.
It's the final episode of The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, and our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas have been hit with the dreaded writer's block. Tasked with coming up a worthy denouement to the show after nearly six years of antics, Jon and Fil find themselves truly stuck. How can you possibly do a big blow-off meta episode about the fifth and final instalment in the Die Hard franchise, 2013's A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD? Will the boys defeat the burnout in time to deliver an episode worthy enough for our beloved fans? Will they be taunted by familiar voices of the past? Will this be the most meta of meta episodes? And lastly, the question everyone wants to know, will Jon and Fil finally get their coveted Nakatomi Podcast Award? All will be revealed in this epic Series Finale of The Pod Charles Cinceast! Thank you all for listening. Thank you for all your love and support over the years. We love you! Be Kind To Each Other! Farewell.
Before the big finale episode next week, take a look back on a classic Christmas episode of The Pod Charles Cinecast, where hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas fly to Los Angeles for the Nakatomi International Podcast Festival to present a live episode on the 1988 Bruce Willis holiday classic DIE HARD!"WELCOME TO THE PARTY, PAL!" Only one thing can stop them... A group of armed terrorists take over the festival and cause a ton of chaos! Can Jon and Fil stop the terrorists from interrupting the show and record this episode that will surely save Christmas? Tune in to find out.... Expect gunfire, explosions, Hans Gruber impressions, quotes, jokes and plenty of love for this Christmas classic (it is totally a Christmas Movie btw)! It's basically like an old school radioplay mixed with a film podcast!
In this penultimate episode of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are back with a Brucie Bonus, as we see the return of BRUCE WILLS US – the bonus series where we occasionally dip into the films of Bruce Willis. With Christmas nearly here, we'd figure we'd dip into one of Bruno's most magical movies, that would be a sure-fire holiday classic had it been set in December, DISNEY'S THE KID (2000). Bruce Willis plays a self-absorbed 40-year-old image consultant who is mysteriously confronted by the eight-year-old version of himself (Spencer Breslin), and is forced to confront the traumas of his past to become a better man. The film features a nice supporting cast of Emily Mortimer, Lily Tomlin, Chi McBride and Jean Smart. It's a pretty wholesome family film, that shows a really sweet side to Bruce, but there is a bit of a "time travel" twist that if you think about too much, makes absolutely no sense. Also, deep inside the film contains a pretty strong man going through therapy and confronting his inner child theme; something that didn't get much play back in those days. So of course we loved it. So, even though it's not a Christmas movie, we think it has enough magic to play this time of year. Give it a spin, and meet us on the airwaves for one last normal episode... Next Week is the end, and it will be a doozy. "Aww, somebody call the waahmbulance!"For full listings and tickets visit: princecharlescinema.com If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! They say the truth is out there, but what happens when the truth finds you? Curiosity killed the cat. Be careful with your butts, the aliens are in the water now. But some people at some big tech company don't want you to know about that. They made sure of it this time. Enjoy our final broadcast. In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we reach the end game of our two ongoing side ventures – BRUCE WILLS US: A Pod Charles Cinecast Brucie Bonus, where we've been looking at some of our favourite films from Bruce Willis every once in a while on the main timeline, and SHYAMALAMANIA, where we've been charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusives.Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they head back to Philadelphia to see how their favourite a former football player turn invincible security guard, David Dunn, is doing, after spending the last near 20 years honing his real-life superhero powers. But first, the boys must meet the Beast! That's because in 2016, M. Night delivered, probably, the first ever "stealth sequel" and first ever supervillain origin story in one package with SPLIT. James McAvoy stars as Kevin, a man with dissociative identity disorder who kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls (one of which is Anya Taylor-Joy) in an isolated underground facility. The film might have pissed off some people in the mental health community, but it marked a true return to form for M. Night, where he captivated audiences with a truly gripping story, featuring McAvoy in one of his career best performances. Then, M. Night shattered our brains by placing a Bruce Willis as David Dunn cameo at the end of this what felt like a standalone story, making it part two in the Unbreakable Universe aka the Eastrail 177 Trilogy. M. Night would follow up with GLASS in 2019, bringing back David Dunn (Willis), who is on the lookout for a super strong man known as the Beast (McAvoy). After their initial encounter, both men are arrested and sent to a psychiatric hospital, where a doctor (Sarah Paulson) attempts to convince them their "powers" are just in their heads. However, Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass, the returning Samuel L. Jackson, is also a patient in this facility, and has other plans for his superhero brethren. We end where we began with this double episode, and as always there is some clunky writing, bad acting, a few silly twists, with a pinch of Biblical references and potential allusions to M. Night's career – all the ingredients that make an M. Night film great. "This was an origin story the whole time." If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are back with PCC Barman, PR team member, and San Francisco aficionado Robbie, to talk about one of the most insane action-thrillers from the 90s, RICOCHET! Starring Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, and Ice T, written by Steven E. de Souza, produced by Joel Silver and directed by Highlander director Russell Mulcahy, there couldn't be a better recipe for a hit, right? Right?!! Denzel stars as Nick Styles, a rookie cop, who sends Earl Blake (Lithgow), a psychotic hitman, to prison. Years later, Blake escapes prison with a well-calculated plan to seek revenge on Styles. This plan includes framing Styles with embezzlement of public funds, theft of pledge drive donations, and CP — before pumping him full of heroin and cocaine, giving him the clap, and framing him for murder. Seriously! What else can we say? It's a bat shit insane movie, that is only believed by seeing! And you should definitely see it! "I'm gonna do something far worse than kill you. I'm gonna let you live." For full listings and tickets visit: princecharlescinema.com If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! The heat is on. We are too close to the truth. Maybe it's the UFO Universe Magazines we've been reading, but we are pretty sure we are being followed. The truth is out there, and someone doesn't want us to find it. Be careful with who may be following you. And for the love of god, if an alien gives you a gift, make sure it's an ashtray. That's the only way you'll be believed... Follow the BREADCRUMBS...

Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusive episodes. Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they skip past a couple of the dregs of M. Night's career and into what is widely regarded as the beginning of the comeback of the director's storied career, with the 2015 found footage horror/thriller THE VISIT.The film following two kids who travel to the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania to visit their grandparents for the first time, and things start to get a bit weird. With a super low budget, a production partner in Jason Blum's Blumhouse Pictures and an interesting idea, M. Night somehow squeaks out a fun little found footage film that doesn't have too many of his tropes we have come to know and love. Sit back and think of those glory days of visiting your grandparents and one of them shoved their dirty nappy into your face. What happened to M. Night as a kid???? This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas present a special spooky treat in celebration of HorrOctober at The PCC, with Neil Jordan's adaptation of Anne Rice's queer-coded vampire novel, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Join us, as we dive into vampire lore, powers, and the homoeroticism of Rice's Vampire Chronicles, as well as how weird the casting of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are in this film. Plus, there is lots of love to the insanely talented Kirsten Dunst, who at the age of 10 knocked it out of the park with her role as an ageing vampire trapped in a child's body. And for an added HorrOctober bonus, Jonathan took to the field, risking life and limb, to have an Interview with a Real Life Vampire. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas finally complete their epic journey through the epic trilogy that is Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY! After assembling a fellowship, a few grand battles, and a hell of a lot of walking, it all comes to a climax, as we cover THE RETURN OF THE KING. We're treated to the original endgame, with all the hallmarks of a modern blockbuster – a huge battle that brings together all the key players, a girl power sequence, lesser than characters getting their moment in the sun, friendships being tested, treachery, the main hero overcoming his biggest test and the big baddie being defeated. And there are 8 million endings! Is this the greatest trilogy of all time? Sound off in the comments on Spotify or leave a review on Apple Podcast to let us know your favourite Trilogy, and join us as we return with The Return of the King in September. "Come on, Mr. Frodo. In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we once again enter SHYAMALAMANIA, where we are charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusive episodes. Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they embark on a brand-new journey with M. Night, as he takes us to a pop concert where a father must do all he can to escape the show. Not because the music is terrible (I mean it's M. Night's daughter, so it's good right?). No, it's because he is secretly a serial killer and the police have the venue surrounded in hopes to catch him. That's not a twist or spoiler. M. Night have that away in the trailer. Shyamalan's latest feature, TRAP? Tune in to find out. It's a super silly time, with a whole lot of nepotism, and not enough Kid Cudi. But it's M. Night's world, and we are just trapped in it! "You know the Butcher? That freakin' nutjob that goes around just chopping people up? Well, the feds or whatever heard that he's gonna be here today, so they set up a trap for him. This whole concert? It's a trap."
What does it take to be a Master Shredder? We ain't talking about the villain from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles either. We're talking the likes of guitar wizards Steven Seagal and Corey Feldman, who continue to shock the world with Reddit AMAs and mind-shattering guitar solos that can only be verified for authenticity by Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst. Hide your dogs, because with these shredders are on the loose, no pup is safe! Follow the BREADCRUMBS...

Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusive episodes. Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they follow M. Night into the world of B-Movies, supposedly. Inspired by such classics as The Birds and The Blob, M. Night subverted audience expectations to bring them a film about a whole new kind of terror... nothing at all! So, what really happened in M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 sci-fi / thriller, THE HAPPENING? With a cast that boasts Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, and Succession's Jeremy Strong and Alan Ruck, it was a murderers row of actors who can go either way on the "are they bad or good" scale forced to compete with one of the worst scripts yet. Not much may have been happening, but it surely was fun watching it happen. Even more fun when you have a look at M. Night fans seriously trying to defend it. To think this isn't even as bad as it gets... "An act of nature, and we'll never fully understand it."

There was more to Billy Bob Thornton's phobias than we could even imagine. The man is a freak, who believes that mythical dragons existed, and are still roaming the world in the form of the Komodo dragon. Then, we get into a film series near and dear to Fil's heart, as we chat KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. We dive into the highs and the lows of the film, the greater franchise as a whole, and what we could see from future instalments.Of course, as with most of these episodes about new films, we start complaining about the state of Hollywood and how we are stuck in sequel, reboot, prequel, legacy sequel hell. But, what are you gonna do? Hollywood gives you big ape movies. You go see them!"Are you familiar with the concept of evolution? In their time, humans were capable of many great things. They could fly, like eagles fly. They could speak across oceans. But now, it is our time... and it is my kingdom. We will learn. Apes will learn. I will learn. And I... will conquer."
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the final episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we have been pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. We skip ahead to the year 2003 for the final bout, where the Coen Brothers took a crack at directing a writer-for-hire script, the rom-com INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, and the Farrelly Brothers got stuck on brotherhood with the conjoined twin comedy STUCK ON YOU. With Intolerable Cruelty the Coens teamed back up with George Clooney, who plays hot shot divorce attorney Miles Massey. Massey is known for his patented pre-nuptial agreement, that is known to be impenetrable. After assisting a cheating husband, millionaire Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), in preventing his wife Marilynn (Catherine Zeta Jones) from getting any of her husband's wealth in their divorce, Miles finds himself a victim of a sophisticated revenge plot orchestrated by Marilynn. The only problem is, Miles falls for Marilynn, clouding his vision, and opening him up to her wrath. It's not quite the cutting film that we're used to from the Coens, but it has some sweet moments, great chemistry from the leads, and some really great and shocking moments. Is it enough to take down the Farrellys? It's a tough order this month, as the Farrellys churned out one of their low-key best films in 2003 with Stuck On You. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as conjoined twins Bob and Walt Tenor, who live in Martha's Vineyard. Bob is into sports and loves the simple life of cooking food at their restaurant in Massachusetts. Walt on the other hand is hoping to become a big time actor. The brothers venture out to Hollywood to allow Walt a chance at fame, when they are discovered by Cher (you know, Cher), who casts Walt to be the co-star in her new TV show – hoping that the network will pull the plug on the show. However, Walt turns out to be a huge hit, causing the brothers to consider their future stuck together. The film is riddled with cameos, such as Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Luke Wilson Frankie Muniz and even JESSE VENTURA!!! You may think we are joking when saying it's one of their best films, but this truly is a sweet, funny, and underrated film from the Farrellys. Give it a go if you don't believe us. We're back to pondering what the alien agenda really is, and it appears we may be closer to cracking the code. According to Whitley Strieber, they appear to just be looking out for our health; making sure we aren't eating too many chocolates and getting the diabetes. Now that chocolate is off the menu, how will we fill the massive void in our hearts and stomachs? Just when you think we're down for the count, we hear there is a new M. Night Shyamalan trailer making the rounds...Follow the BREADCRUMBS...

And this time, we are joined by special guest, cinema Duty Manager and Filmmaker, and Bruce Willis fanboy Chevy Mclaren – talking Richard Donner's 2006 action thriller, 16 BLOCKS, starring Bruce Willis and Mos Def.Bruce Willis plays ageing alcoholic cop, Jack Mosley, who is assigned the task of escorting a witness, Mos Def as Eddie Bunker, from police custody to a courthouse 16 blocks away. There are, however, chaotic forces at work, aka stupid Cops man, that prevent them from making it in one piece. It's like a Die Hard movie, where a very normal cop has to go above and beyond to save the day, but it is even more compounded by this being the most broken down Bruce Willis you've ever seen. It's probably the Die Hard movie we should have got instead of Die Hard 4.0, but c'est la vie – we had to see Bruce jump off the wing of a jet plane. So, get your alcoholic beverage of choice at the ready, and get prepared to travel 16 blocks with us, and this underrated gem of the mid-2000s."Days change, seasons change, people don't change."You can find Chevy Mclaren's filmmaking exploits at https://www.chevymclaren.com/For full listings and tickets visit: princecharlescinema.com If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the penultimate episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we hit the road in the year 2000, with two films featuring people looking to clear their name. It's Joel & Ethan Coen's folk musical comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's dark comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, a criminal who convinces two fellow convicts (Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro) to break out of prison to seek treasure he left buried from a previous job. Turns out he really just wants to stop his wife (Holly Hunter) from getting remarried. Along their journey, they meet a young black musician who sold his soul to the devil, and cut a hit record together. They also meet a cyclops, sirens, and countless others in this unique adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. With more brilliant cinematography from Roger Deakins, a tremendous soundtrack featuring loads of old folk, gospel, and bluegrass standards, and quality performances all around, this is another winner for Joel and Ethan Coen. Can they ever be stopped? The Farrelly Brothers can attempt to do so with their road comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey in his first film with the Farrelly's since Dumb and Dumber. Carrey, who was just coming off starring in back-to-back serious roles (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) returned to the gross-out comedy as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper who develops a split personality. Charlie must escort Irene (Renée Zellweger) to New York, where she is wanted for hit-and-run. The pair are then forced to go on the lam to avoid Irene's mafia-connected ex-boyfriend, whilst Charlie is also trying to suppress his new alter-ego, Hank. Some of this one holds up, but it is pretty much relying on a very wrongfully depicted mental illness – so take that for what you will. Is it enough to topple the sweet tunes of O Brother? We'll let you decide...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! What's the worst date you've ever been on? Nothing can be worse than a date that never ends, and turns into a series of terrible dates, much like the fortunes of Griffin Dunne in Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS. If you'd like to hear this episode in its entirety and more episodes like it, subscribe for as little as $1 per month over at patreon.com/thepccpodcastIn this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas step back into the territory of new film releases to talk about two spooky new films out in cinemas! One is genuinely spooky, and the other is spooky on account of how bad it is...First up, we dive into the hit new film from Shudder, Colin and Cameron Caire's LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. The film follows cinema journeyman David Dastmalchian as late night talk show host Jack Delroy. On Halloween Night 1977, hoping to get a much-needed ratings boost, Jack invites a parapsychologist and a young girl possessed by a demon on to his show. Soon, all hell breaks loose, and it is all captured in this found footage film.We dive into all angles of this one, what we liked, what we didn't, what we thought could have made it pop, and even the much maligned AI element of the film, that has turned away some viewers. Did it still deliver enough scares to be spooky delight? Tune in...Then, we turn our attentions to the most recent outing from the Ghostbusters franchise, GHOSTBUSTERS : FROZEN EMPIRE. The Ghostbusters are back from the Afterlife to deliver another film that pretty much rehashes the original Ghostbusters again. Be prepared, we (mostly Fil) go off on this one. So, if you like hearing us complain, this episode is for you.Silver lining? Are we turning around Finn Wolfhard (despite him doing nooooothing in this movie?) He is a fan of the Prince Charles Cinema, so he gets bonus points for that. Tune in for all this, and who knows, maybe even a fashion update..."The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!"
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. I mean, Deakins, man...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This is a sample clip from our Patreon feed. If you'd like to hear this episode in its entirety and more episodes like it, subscribe for as little as $1 per month over at patreon.com/thepccpodcastIn this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas try something a little different, where we are talking about a book that one of us has actually read that has been made into a movie that we then watched, and how the two compare. For the first instalment of this Book Club series, we tackle Whitley Strieber's 1987 non-fiction bestseller, COMMUNION, which was made into the 1989 sci-fi horror of the same name, starring Christopher Walken. In December 1985, renowned sci-fi/horror novelist Whitley Strieber (The Wolfen, The Hunger) had an unexplainable experience; a shattering assault from the unknown. Experiences in which he "lost time" and has terrifying flashbacks, which hypnosis undertaken by Dr. Donald F. Klein and ufologist Budd Hopkins later links to an alleged encounter with aliens. To all appearances, he and his family have had a series of elaborate personal encounters with intelligent non-human beings in his isolated cabin in upstate New York. At first, he thought he was losing his mind. Unconcerned with the whole phenomenon of UFOs and extraterrestrials, he viewed them as a false unknown, easily explainable as misperceptions or hallucinations. But the visitors marched right into the middle of the life of this indifferent sceptic.Who are these visitors? Where do they come from? Do they represent some as-yet-unidentified aspect of the human mind - incredible, almost beyond comprehension, but essentially human - or are they what they seem to be, visitors of unknown origin? If this happened to you, and you wrote a bestselling novel about it, and decided to make a movie based on your experiences, would you let Christopher Walken come in and improvise a bunch of stuff, dance with puppets, and make you look like a lunatic? I would hope not. We were inspired to dive into this book and its wacky adaptation from our I Want To Believe Arc over last Halloween, where we were discussing Alien Movies. During this arc, we kept asking ourselves, "What really is the alien agenda?" Now, we don't know if we are any closer to the truth after witnessing Christopher Walken dance around with aliens and make the writer of this book look like a complete ass hat, but maybe... just maybe... the truth is still out there!"I am you. And you are me. And we are here. I am the dreamer and you are the dream."
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's Week 2 of the new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we'll be looking at two of the biggest films from each brother duo, with Joel and Ethan Coen's Academy Award-winning film from 1996, FARGO, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's smash hit from 1998, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (we decided to jump ahead to 1998 for Farrelly's so we could pit 1996's Kingpin vs 1998's The Big Lebowski – you know... bowling, dude!)In Fargo, Frances McDormand shines as a pregnant police officer attempting to solve three murders in her jurisdiction, that all lead back to William H. Macy – a car salesman who hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife for ransom money. It stands as the Coen Brothers' signature film, that inspired a television, and introduced the world to the endearing Minnesota accent. With a stellar cast, incredible performances, top-notch writing and direction, and brilliant cinematography, it'd be hard for most films to beat it.So, how did There's Something About Mary compare? Ben Stiller plays a guy who's looking for the girl that got away – the simply perfect, Mary, played by Cameron Diaz in her breakthrough role. When he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillion) to track her down, the investigator also falls for Mary, leading to a silly love triangle. We've got balls being zipped up in trousers, dogs being drugged, NFL Superstars getting tackled by normal men playing intellectually challenged men, and old lady boobs. It's a Farrelly Brothers film... At least there is the wonderful Jonathan Richman to sing us through the film.Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? If you'd like to hear this episode in its entirety and more episodes like it, subscribe for as little as $1 per month over at patreon.com/thepccpodcastIn this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we are back in the world of SHYAMALAMANIA, where we are charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusive episodes.Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they dive into the murky waters of a film that some describe as a religious experience. The story centres around a broken man working as a property manager of an apartment complex in Philadelphia. One night he discovers a naked woman in the swimming pool and soon gets dragged into a bedtime story that must see him return this woman (a narf) to her home of the water world. But first, she must clear the mind of an author and inspire him, so that he can write the book that will inspire the person that will change the world. And that author is none other than M. Night himself.... What a twist!Of course, we are talking about M. Night Shyamalan's 2006 fantasy thriller, LADY IN THE WATER, starring Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, M. Night Shyamalan and features Jeffrey Wright and Bob Balaban. Enter a world where M. Night is totally losing his mind over criticism, burning bridges with Disney, snapping back at critics, trying to pass off a bedtime story as a real Hollywood movie and dishing out the hot goss in a tell-all book. No, seriously... "They Try To Help Man, But Man May Have Forgotten How To Listen."
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, we present a brand-new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. Both sets of brothers saw some of their best films come out between 1994 - 2003, and we'll be taking a look into this small window of time to see who is the best of the brother filmmakers (I mean, we know who it is... it's just for fun. You know... for kids?)In the debut episode, we'll be looking at two films from 1994, with Joel and Ethan Coen's first big budget studio film, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's debut feature, DUMB & DUMBER.Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman lead the Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy, about a mailroom clerk who is plucked from obscurity to be the president of a major corporation in order for the scheming board to take over full control of the company's stock. A throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, the film failed at the box office, but became a big cult hit. But, is the fast-talking comedy enough to take on the Farrelly's breakout first feature? In Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are two moronic buddies who take a briefcase across the country to return it to a woman they think lost it, getting mixed up in a kidnapping plot and a whole load of other shenanigans. It's incredibly dumb, but still packs in plenty of laughs 30 years later. The film was the crowning achievement in Jim Carrey's massive run of 1994 (which also saw him star in Ace Ventura and The Mask) that would see him become one of the biggest stars of the 90s.
