What if the real power lies not in choosing a side—but in mastering both? We explore how blending agile and traditional project management is redefining success across industries. In this thought-provoking episode, I'm joined by Lenka Pinka, Chief of Staff to the CEO at Project Management Institute, and Sandy Mamoli, Agile Coach, former Olympian, and Agile Alliance board member, to unpack one of the most persistent tensions in the world of work: agile vs. traditional project management. But what if this debate is outdated—and even unhelpful?Together, Lenka and Sandy challenge the false binary and advocate for a more nuanced, collaborative approach. Drawing from their global experience across industries and methodologies, they explain how today's most successful organizations don't choose sides—they blend practices fluidly based on context, outcomes, and evolving needs. This conversation is full of compelling insights for both project professionals and agile practitioners. From fears of “agile dilution” to misconceptions about governance, we explore how shared values and a focus on delivery can bridge methodological divides. As Sandy puts it, the new PMI–Agile Alliance partnership is like "two fully whole, independent people who together create something magical."Whether you see yourself as a traditional project manager, a scrum master, or somewhere in between, this episode will reshape how you think about frameworks, governance, and the future of work. If you're ready to move past methodology wars and start focusing on what really drives success, this is your episode. Remember when letting people choose their own teams seemed completely radical? (I sure do!) A decade ago, Sandy Mamoli and David Mole pioneered "self-selection" at Trade Me in New Zealand, sparking a movement that would challenge conventional wisdom about team formation. In this reunion episode, we dive deep into their journey from initial experiment to proven practice. Drawing on a decade of experience across industries, cultures, and continents, Sandy and David share how self-selection has evolved to meet modern workplace challenges. What you'll learn: Why trust, ownership, and vision are the three rivers that power successful self-selection How the practice adapted from in-person to remote/hybrid environments What traditional banks and cutting-edge startups have in common when it comes to team formation Where self-selection is headed in an era of AI and fluid team structures Practical steps to start your own self-selection journey Whether you're a seasoned agilist or new to the concept, this episode offers fresh insights into how organizations thrive when people choose their teams. (And yes, we'll answer that burning question: "But what if people make the wrong choice?") Learn More About , a restless group of passionate people with complementary skills and a shared belief in continuous improvement. I was just following the Agile Australia conference hashtag (#agileaus) on Twitter when Sandy's name came up. When I read about her conference talk is saw words like self-organizing teams. OK. I know that one. That's what scrum teams do well. But then I saw the term self-selection. Self-selection? Does than mean I can put myself on my team at work I want? Mostly, yes, according to Sandy Mamoli. And Sandy knows about self-selection. She wrote the book on it, "Creating Great Teams: How Self-Selection Lets People Excel." Obviously, I had to get her on the show to talk about it. Sandy Mamoli is an Agile coach and founder of Nomad8, a small but perfectly formed Agile consultancy in Auckland, New Zealand. In this podcast recorded after the JAFAC 2018 conference Shane Hastie, Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, spoke Miki Szikszai and Sandy Mamoli about Snapper’s adoption of holacracy. Why listen to this podcast: • Clarity of purpose is key for an organisation looking to improve their ways of working • The sign of a good coach is when they realise they need to step away so the client can stand on their own • The most important skills are around collaboration, teamwork, innovation and empathy, not technologies and tools • Holacracy is a system to create a self-organising organisation where decisions are made at the right level with a hierarchy of purpose rather than a hierarchy of people • Holacracy amplifies the culture you already have – so get the culture right first More on this: Quick scan our curated show notes on InfoQ https://bit.ly/2zLL7cx You can also subscribe to the InfoQ newsletter to receive weekly updates on the hottest topics from professional software development. bit.ly/24x3IVq Subscribe: www.youtube.com/infoq Like InfoQ on Facebook: bit.ly/2jmlyG8 Follow on Twitter: twitter.com/InfoQ Follow on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/infoq Check the landing page on InfoQ: https://bit.ly/2zLL7cx
