I was just following the Agile Australia conference hashtag (#agileaus) on Twitter when Sandy's name came up. When I read about her conference talk is saw words like self-organizing teams. OK. I know that one. That's what scrum teams do well. But then I saw the term self-selection. Self-selection? Does than mean I can put myself on my team at work I want? Mostly, yes, according to Sandy Mamoli. And Sandy knows about self-selection. She wrote the book on it, "Creating Great Teams: How Self-Selection Lets People Excel." Obviously, I had to get her on the show to talk about it. Sandy Mamoli is an Agile coach and founder of Nomad8, a small but perfectly formed Agile consultancy in Auckland, New Zealand. She's a former Olympian, a geek, a gadget junkie, international keynote speaker. She has a masters degree in artificial intelligence and knows quite a lot about Agile. As you can tell from the interview, I didn't know anything. This interview truly was about me asking Sandy a bunch of questions to learn how self-selection is creating organizations of the future.  Learn more about Sandy:  About her session at Agile Australia: http://agileaustralia.com.au/2019/speakers/sandy-mamoli/ Her company, Nomad8: https://nomad8.com Her slides on Holacracy: https://nomad8.com/articles/holacracy-slides/ Sandy actually implemented this stuff: https://www.slideshare.net/smamol/how-i-tried-holacracy-and-lived-to-tell-the-tale-151317408 A more detailed write up on Holacracy: https://nomad8.com/uploads/pdf/Holocracy_How_I_survived_to_Tell_The_Tale_article.pdf   We write about all of our podcasts! 060 Pamela Meyer Agility is Responding to Unplanned Situations in an Organized Way

The majority of executives say that agility is a critical organizational capability, says Pamela Meyer, author of Agility Shift: Creating Agile and Effective Leaders, Teams, and Organizations. The irony is that most organizations aren't agile. They aren't doing it. If they are doing it, it's coming from a mindset that isn't agile. That's a hard pill to swallow. Leaders know they have to be more agile, responsive, and nimble. But there is still a belief that agility is risky. "What if we make bad decisions?" This is the wrong mindset because actually agility is about minimizing risk while delivering value faster to customers. We talk to Pamela about how organizations can shift their collective mindsets and become more agile.  Learn more about Pamela: Pamela's Website: https://pamela-meyer.com/ Her Book: https://www.amazon.com/Agility-Shift-Creating-Effective-Organizations/dp/1629560707/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431653481&sr=8-1&keywords=the+agility+shift The Agility Shift Inventory: https://pamela-meyer.com/agility-shift-inventory/ On Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamelameyerphd/   We write about all of our podcasts! 058 Fred Fowler Scrum Is for Figuring It Out

Fred Fowler changed the way I think about agile. And specifically how I think about scrum. He helped me realize that scrum is for projects that require you to figure it out. That's why scrum works so well for software projects because the speed and frequency at which software needs to be shipped, we are always figuring it out. Waterfall methods of work are for work that you've already figured out. You may use scrum to figure out how to build a house. When you are ready to take that house and build 50 of them, you wouldn't use scrum anymore. Software projects aren't the only type of work that requires a continuous process of figuring it out.  Fred Fowler is scrum certified. He has is Profession Scrum Masters (PSM I and PSM II). He is also only one of 50 people or show with his PSM III. He also offers enterprise coaching services and training classes to help people become PSM certified. Fred is also author of, "Navigating Hybrid Scrum Environments: Understanding the Essentials, Avoiding the Pitfalls." To say that Fred is an agile coach is understating his career in a big way. He has had an extensive career in the public sector serving on the city council for the city of Sunnyvale in the heart of Silicon Valley and is the former mayor of Sunnyvale. Fred is currently working on a project in East Palo Alto, CA called Project WeHope, helping people become healthy, employed, and housed.    We write about all of our podcasts! Keith Mattes, senior program manager / Gainsight administrator at Pearson, joins Nice Work to talk about how reduce support case resolution connecting Jira and Salesforce. Along the way, he also broke down silos by connecting development teams with customer support teams. He did this in the face of organizational resistance. As in most organizations, there are barriers to trying new things, especially connecting systems and integrating data across them. On the journey to overcome this resistance, Keith asked a lot of questions, questioned the status quo (politely, we might add), and got Jira and Salesforce connected. There is a lesson here in challenging the status quo with questions...it helped that Keith was new to the teach and could ask the "Huh" and "Why" questions that most people, who have been on a team a long time, can be afraid to ask. But this is how change is done.  Keith used ServiceRocket's Connector for Salesforce & Jira to do this, you can learn more about one the Atlassian Marketplace.  Learn more about Keith: On Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/keithmattes/   We write about all of our podcasts! Help desks are not the only teams that take and fulfill requests from employees in organizations. Marketing teams are asked to approve copy. Facilities teams are asked to fix broken doors. Legal teams are asked to review contracts. The difference is that help desk teams do not have a reputation of being a black hole. Everyone knows that they can fill out a form and get help. Even if it is "eventually." This is not the same for business teams. Most of the time, we need to know who in marketing or facilities or legal, we need to ask. Then we send an email. Here's the problem, with that approach, there is no way to count the requests, track how long requests take, know what to do when someone goes on vacation. In other words, there is no transparency. Kate Caldecott, Chief Operating Officer at ThinkTilt and Simon Herd, Founder and CEO of ThinkTilt join Nice Work! to help us understand why business teams need to adopt principles of ITSM and why they should do it with Jira Service Desk. They even wrote a white paper about it called, "From ITSM to ESM: Enterprise Service Management with Jira Service Desk."  Learn more about Kate and Simon: That ThinkTilt White Paper: http://info.thinktilt.com/itsm-to-esm-white-paper ThinkTilt Website: http://www.thinktilt.com Kate on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kate-caldecott-01762312/ Simon on ThinkTilt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simonherd/ Thanks so much for listening! We met Kimberly Deal at Atlassian Summit 2019. Actually, we met her in the conference app a week before Summit. We planned to meet in person, but we both got so busy it never happen. So we met up with her after Summit and pressed record. We had a fun conversation. Kimberly is a 2X certified Atlassian professional and is working on her third. She is also an Atlassian User Group (AUG) Leader for Columbus, Ohio. One of the interesting things we talked about is why Kimberly liked the Training Theater at Summit so much. "You are already certified. Why would you go to training?" Kimberly replied wisely: "There might be tidbits and tricks I might not know." Ah. Refreshing. Beginners mind. Even though she is certified, she finds herself in her work in Jira, for example, taking the long way to do some action. She knows there is a better way, but she just never took the time to discover and learn what it might be. That's why she goes to training. This was especially true for her with Confluence. She uses Confluence regularly, and thought she knew it well. Until she started one of the classes at Summit. She learned all kind of simple and useful functions she didn't know existed. That's the power of continuous learning. Learn more about Kimberly: Atlassian User Group Columus: https://aug.atlassian.com/columbus/ On Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberlydeal/

Gillian Rourke is an avid user of both Confluence and Jira. In fact, her role at KPMG UK is in part to translate client project business requirements into Jira projects and Confluence space and then onboard and training both KPMG engagement teams and the clients they will invite into the Jira project and Confluence space for the project. Most of us think that the main us of Jira and Confluence is to bring teams together around their work, but there are many companies that invite external users into Jira and Confluence to collaborate better. This could mean inviting clients into a Jira project. For that matter it could mean inviting vendors and other outside service providers into both Jira and Confluence to get work done. We talked to Gillian about how she does that in her work.  We also talked to Gillian about her experience at Atlassian Summit 2019. Joanna Thurmann, Atlassian Certified Professional and ServiceRocket technical trainer, joins Nice Work! to recap her Atlassian Summit 2019 experience. We talked about three things. First, we talked about gratitude at work. Shawn Achor gave a keynote talk about happiness and one of the things we can all do at work (one thing we actually have control over at work) is have and/or express gratitude. It is such a simple and powerful idea.  Here is a link to Shawn Achor giving a TED talk on this topic: https://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work?language=en You can see all the Atlassian Summit 2019 Keynote presentation here: https://www.atlassian.com/company/events/summit-us/watch We also talked to Joanna about Atlassian University training offerings at Summit. Joanna taught two pre-conference courses for Jira Project Administration and also delivered mini-education sessions during the conference in these theater sessions. Which were so popular that people were standing in the aisle. It was inspiring to see so many people get certified at Summit. They were very proud to wear their certification hoodies...as they should be.  Link to Atlassian Certifications: https://www.atlassian.com/university/certification Even Bill might consider the project administrator and agile certifications.  Finally we talked to Joanna about higher purpose and give back. Joanna is passionate about this topic and spend time building homes (among other things, which she talks about) in Tijuana through the Tijuana Ministry. Atlassian participates in the Pledge 1% program as do many of the Summit Sponsors, who proudly displayed their membership on their booth. Joanna was impressed with one of the Summit sponsors, Praecipio, that gave booth visitors a choice to receiving a t-shirt or opting in to have Praecipio donate an equivalent amount of the shirt to a charity. For people who want to give back and have enough t-shirts already, which is a lot of people, this made a positive impression.  Link to Tijuana Ministry: http://www.tijuanaministry.org/ Link to Pledge 1%: https://pledge1percent.org/ Tell us what you think of Nice Work! I have to admit, I love having a native mobile app on my phone that makes it easy for me to work on my Jira issues when I'm on the go. The Jira instance I use every day is Server, so there is no mobile app, which isn't such a big deal mostly. I work in the office, sitting in a desk, and frankly, I don't feel a burning desire to work on my projects using my phone. But once Marc Verstaen, founder and CEO of Anaxi introduced me to his mobile app and I connected it to my Jira instance, I found it liberating. The simple fact that I can scroll through my filters, check in on tasks I am working on and also comment and assign, makes me more responsive to my colleagues without feeling like I am sitting down to work.  On this episode of Nice Work! we talk to Marc about the interface he is building for Jira (and Github), why he is doing it, and what it means for working more effectively.  Yes! Zach Boerner is a senior technical consultant at ServiceRocket. He joins Nice Work! to talk about Jira Portfolio and how to use it right. Lacey asked the right question, "How long does it take to see Jira Portfolio's real value?" Zach's answer was comforting and frightening. "If you are doing everything right, your return on investment in Jira Portfolio is instantaneous," says Zach. Doing everything right means you have a well-groomed backlog and your stories are estimated out for a reasonable amount of time. In other words, your data has to be good. Of course. If you get that part right, then Jira Portfolio will show you where your work stands. Zach explains that you will know 1) we have a full year of work for this team ahead of us, and we are in big trouble with our current deadlines; OR 2) our backlog ends in only three months and then what are we going to work on. In either case, we can use the output from Jira Portfolio to make decisions, ask for resources, or let the business know they can make that new product announcement at the conference in the spring.  This is the kind of visibility into our projects most companies would love to have. Zach helps us get our mind straight about what we need to have in place for us to realize the value of it.  Learn more about Zach: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zacharyboerner/ ServiceRocket: http://atlassian.servicerocket.com Connect with your host, Lacey Carlyle: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lacey-carlyle/ All other social media @LaceyTalksTech

You are a Jira administrator. Colleagues come to you for help setting up their projects, their issue types, their workflows, and maybe even their permission schemes. Here's the thing. Your colleagues know what they want AND they don't know what they want. They know they want an issue type that matches how they work. They don't know that of they over-customize it, it will eventually go unused. One of the skills you need to hone, as a Jira Administrator, is listening skills. It is a required micro skill and one that will help you give your colleagues the Jira that they want. In this episode of Nice Work! Think about this for a moment. When we talk about the difference between managers and individual contributors, someone inevitably says (even if they are half kidding), "Well, you know, the team members are the ones actually doing the work." The implication here is that the managers are not doing any work; at least not work of any value value. Obviously, this is not actually true because both are doing work. They are just doing different work and depend on each other equally to get all the work done. Joseph Flahiff, agile coach and author of The New Agile Manager, describes it as a symmetrical relationship between managers and team members. The new agile manager understands this and works with teams to ensure we are all working as effectively as possible. And guess what, Lacey Carlyle, a new managers, gets some free agile manager coaching.  Learn more about Joseph: The New Agile Manager: https://www.amazon.com/NEW-AGILE-MANAGER-Joseph-Flahiff/dp/1978418825 Joseph on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephflahiff/

025 Anne Janzer Jira Administrators are Writers

Few of us consider ourselves writers. Yet. All day long. All we do at work is write emails, write Confluence pages, write comments on Jira issues. Write. Write. Write. Doesn't that make us writers? Anne Janzer says it does. "If writing is any part of your job and you are paid to put thoughts into words, you are a writer." Janzer wrote this in her book, "The Workplace Writer's Process: A Guide to Getting the Job Done." Did you notice that? Writing is a process. You Jira Administrators will appreciate that. So embrace it. You are a writer.  Think of it this way. You just finished creating a custom workflow, and you are about to buckle down and document how the workflow works, what issue type schemes it is associated with, and which projects it should be used in. That is writing. And I bet most of you Jira Administrators out there, faced with this task, procrastinate writing that documentation. We talked to Janzer about how to use process to improve our writing and communicate our ideas. So put on your ear buds, create a new Confluence page and start taking notes.  Here is a challenge for you: We will send a ServiceRocket T-Shirt to the first five people who create a Confluence template applying the six step process from Janzer's book, which is also the process we talk about in the show. Once you create it, take a screen shot of the template and tweet it to Lacey (@LaceyTalksTech) and Bill (@billcush) using the hashtag #NiceWork! Seriously. Do it.

024 Rob Castaneda Founder/CEOs on Scheduling a Meeting Before the Meeting

Rob Castaneda, founder and CEO of ServiceRocket, told Lacey Carlyle that he started scheduling time on the executive team's calendar before and after the core meeting. He almost breezed by it. Lacey didn't let him. Thank goodness. Because the idea is quit smart and practical. Exec meetings are usually long, and execs don't exactly have a lot of time, so blocking off more time on people's calendar seems counterintuitive. Until you see the the behavior. During the 30 minutes of blocked calendar time before the meeting, people come into the meeting room and start preparing for the meeting. Updating reports and responding to action items from the prior meeting. This makes for a much more productive meeting. Participants prep before the meeting and not during the first 30 minutes of the meeting, while they are not talking, and not paying attention to the meeting. In other words, not being present in the meeting. This pre-meeting blocked time allows people to be present during the meeting because they are prepped.

A group of software developers created it on a mission to improve the value software development teams deliver to customers. Did you know there is an agile marketing manifesto? Well, there is. Google it. It's real. Listeners will learn a fun fact on the show that Nick Muldoon of Easy Agile, and two-time guest on Nice Work (Episodes 19 and 8) is one of the original signers of the agile marketing manifesto. So, agile marketing is a thing, and marketing teams are running agile methodologies like kanban and scrum. Some are even using Jira to do it. "The Art of Agile Marketing" is a story about how one team runs scrum on Jira, how they set it up, and how they have evolved over time from lessons learned doing it.
