Two-time canoe slalom Olympian, Mike Dawson, spent a lot of time outdoors as a child and has a deep love for whitewater. While kayaking expeditions are within his comfort zone, Mike takes on a new challenge, journeying to the South Pole on a fifty day ski expedition inspired by Messner's 1989 epic Antarctic crossing. We discuss the logistics of a journey in such harsh conditions, operating camera gear, pulling a "too heavy" sled, and eventually reaching the South Pole base. Mike reflects on how this experience forced him to slow down and the challenges he experienced returning to normal life. Matt Butler says he was born with an innate desire to fish, although his family wasn't outdoorsy. He started fishing in local Waikato rivers at age twelve and it took Matt three years to catch his first fish. After moving to Wanaka to pursue his passion for fly-fishing, he decided to spend his 20s doing what he loved. Matt would spend a few months each year as a fly fishing guide, then travel around the world and fish for the rest of the year. In 2020, that season of life came to an abrupt halt and Matt pivoted into starting an outdoor brand, KEA Outdoors, launching off a kickstarter campaign. He shares about his business journey and the unique investment opportunity currently open to the public. In this episode, hear from Elisha Watson, founder of Coralus Venture Nisa, in a conversation with Development Guide MJ Ryan. Nisa was founded by Elisha in 2017, and up until July 2023, Nisa had provided employment to 29 women from refugee and migrant backgrounds. In December 2022, Elisha put Nisa up for sale and in June 2023, they announced they were closing. "In the final 5 weeks of business, it became really clear that Nisa's loyal customers valued the products that Nisa's staff made in their Wellington workshop. This response inspired Production Manager Pam Lowe to make a last-ditch effort to save Nisa; the jobs Nisa provides; and to keep making the clothing you love into the future.Together with other members of the Nisa team, a new plan emerged, and a hugely successful PledgeMe campaign launched. After funding their campaign goal in the first 24 hours, they ended the campaign with double the original goal. This made it possible for Nisa to re-start, re-stock and begin to create new employment opportunities to women from refugee and migrant backgrounds." They also discuss: Elisha's vision behind starting Nisa, which was to create job opportunities for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. How Nisa grew and expanded its product range to include bras, socks, bathing suits, and activewear. Elisha's next steps and the pathway to selling the business. The community's overwhelming support, which led to allowing the business to continue operating. Nisa's new team members, including those from refugee and migrant backgrounds. While we haven't heard as much about gamestop and memestocks this year, the fallout continues, with one of the hedge funds most impacted by GameStop's surge in value telling investors it's shutting down. Rebecca also talks to Kathryn about New Zealand's crowdfunding platform Pledgeme.

Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he’s joined by Nada Piatek, co-founder and MD of Again Again.Every year, New Zealanders throw out 300 million takeaway coffee cups. Even the ones that are compostable, most often aren’t composted – only one in 400 compostable coffee cups make it to the compost, in fact. Many people have Keep Cups, but not everyone always has their Keep Cup on them at all times. And then there aren’t many choices. But one New Zealand company is out to change that.Again Again offers a service where users can pay $3 to borrow a reusable stainless steel cup with a lid. Bring it back, and you will get your $3 back, with the cafe washing it for future use. It saves cafes money on takeaway cups, and it reduces waste. So far it’s helped remove 840,000 cups from the waste stream each year, and it’s only just getting started.Again Again began in Wellington, has 160 plus cafes around the country in the program, and is now looking to expand their impact and mission. They’re currently equity crowdfunding through PledgeMe – where they’re looking to raise at least $300k to help them expand to tackle other takeaway waste problems, including an exciting new project with Garage Project around their flagons. The company co-founder and MD, Nada Piatek joined us by Zoom, for a chat about how 20 years of entrepreneurship and sustainability initiatives led to this concept, the raise and the goals of the company. Wellington blogger Lucy Revill is crowd funding to publish a book about the city she loves and some of its dynamic and interesting residents. She founded the blog The Residents five years ago featuring interviews and photographs of Wellingtonians, some celebrities, others not so well known but just as interesting. She gained thousands of followers on social media, then decided to pull together some of them in a book celebrating the Capital. After being knocked back by publishers, she started PledgeMe page and raised her initial goal of $ 22 thousand in 13 hours.
Updated to fix audio issues. They say cats have nine lives. Breccan tells us about 10 cities, 10 schools and 10 lives. Underneath his bland title of CEO of a software services company is a young man with an unconventional upbringing and a company determined to deliver “do good” tech-focussed on ethics, fairness and sustainability. Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he talks to Jade Tang-Taylor and Anna Guenther from Cheese Cartel. This week on the podcast we have something a bit different: our first returning guests. It's very cool to have someone come back to the podcast on a second mission, and today that's happening twice. Two people from two different previous podcasts have created a kind of entrepreneur supergroup.Cheese Cartel was the outcome of a bunch of friends who know how make things happen coming together for a higher purpose (cheese).A self-described slow startup, Cheese Cartel is an antidote to the kind of businesses that are out to take over the world at any and all costs. Instead, it is a cool meditation on growing a company with the best people possible to get the best results. Two of the Cheese Cartel’s five (and a half) founders join Business is Boring today, Jade Tang-Taylor - who was on the podcast previously as a co-founder of Curative and now consults to bring design for social impact and diversity to projects large and small and Anna Guenther, founder and chief bubble blower at PledgeMe.Listen to the chat to learn about their philosophy, how they launched a successful cheese service business and the journey of making a business with friends. I first heard speak at a TED talk in Wellington back in 2012. She introduced the idea that crowdfunding was going to change the world and, as I’d never heard of crowdfunding, I was intrigued as to how she was going to do this. Anna was then, and still is, a powerhouse of energy and passion to do what she thinks is right. We often don’t agree and that's cool (well for me anyway!), but I have immense respect for her. She was one of Collective Intelligence’s first recipients and used this opportunity to great effect, her team helping her mould into the success it is today. Anna’s wine choice is on standby for her to enjoy with us when she’s next back across the ditch from her base in Brisbane.

Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand, with the interview available as both audio and a transcribed excerpt. Last year a medicinal cannabis producer called Hikurangi Cannabis Company came out of seemingly nowhere and broke the internet, crashing PledgeMe’s servers as it became the fastest local company to crowdfund into the millions - doing 2 million odd in less than ten minutes. But as with most overnight successes it was on the back of years of work. It’s a long journey to change an illegal activity well connected with an area to a legal one. Locals from the Ruatoria area and around Ngati Porou and the East Coast, of which Hikurangi is a significant Maunga to local Iwi, were given first dibs, and invested ahead of the public raise. And the company, that inked deals overseas that could stretch into the hundreds of millions has gained first low THC and very recently higher THC trial and growth rights. And this is while not compromising on trying to create access and jobs for people that have fallen foul of the prohibition laws. While other companies have gone out with a very medical company type branded approach, Hikurangi proudly showed their dreadlocked and rasta hatted workers. This is about honesty, integrity and most importantly actually following through, the 20 plus local jobs and big milestones hit have Hikurangi as a leader in the industry, a founding member of the industry council and a beacon to many companies looking to take a community-led approach to the legal cannabis industry, To talk the journey, where we are and where we go from here, founder CEO Manu Caddie joins us now. Listen about the PledgeMe project ... and then GO PLEDGE: https://pledgeme.co.nz/projects/5701-sensors-that-tell-you-when-your-home-is-making-you-sickWe need your help to take the next step and run trials in key communities, so we’re asking you to pledge to buy a kit, and for each kit you buy we’ll give one to a family in need. Each kit comes with 4 sensors, a gateway and a free app that helps you measure the health of your home.We believe every home in New Zealand should have sensors, and that they should be government funded for our most vulnerable communities - just like the flu jab. But until we can make that a reality, we need our community to help us reach those who need us the most.Join our mission We want an Aotearoa where our homes don’t make us us sick. We want every home to have a sensor kit within the next 5 years.By pledging your support, you’ll help empower communities to understand how their homes can affect their health. You’ll also help us gather secure, non-personal data that helps paint a picture of what’s needed in New Zealand building standards.https://pledgeme.co.nz/projects/5701-sensors-that-tell-you-when-your-home-is-making-you-sick------------------------------------------------------The Whare Hauora update is brought to you by Hiria Te Rangi and Access Granted NZ.All the updates: https://www.accessgranted.nz/whare-hauora/ Get all the Whare Hauora updates:- http://www.wharehauora.nz/ - https://www.facebook.com/wharehauora/ - https://twitter.com/WhareHauora Access Granted is the leading New Zealand tech, media, & startup podcast hosted by Mike Riversdale, Raj Khushal, and others. Recently I spoke with Anna Guenther, CEO and chief bubble blower of PledgeMe, a New Zealand based crowdfunding platform “helping Kiwis fund the things they care about”. I'd been wanting to chat with Anna for quite a while, her name was on the “potential awesome podcast guests” list that I keep for myself. I'd been reluctant about reaching out as I'd heard she was super busy and had thought, “Why would a CEO give up their time to chat with me if I'm just reaching out to them cold?” Thankfully one day I managed the courage to reach out to ask if she'd be interested in coming on the show. The reply I received back the next day was awesome “Ha! I'm pretty used to being uncomfortable! I could catch up early next week if you'd like?” We caught up down at Creative HQ in Wellington and sat down to find out a bit more about each other over a cup of peppermint tea before the meeting room we were going to chat in freed up. I don't know what I'd felt so uncomfortable about as we discussed favourite podcasts, why we liked them and why we didn't, as well as what we were going to try at “Wellington on a Plate”. When we got stuck into the podcast conversation we talked a bit about Anna's background, her accent belies the fact she is from Dunedin. Then we got into the origin story of PledgeMe, it's an interesting story and you can listen to it here. But as you know it's the uncomfortable stuff around it that I find interesting. Anna discussed heaps of great ideas, but these ones are popping up for me at the moment with where I am at. “That felt like the validation point where we could really start telling people about it” There came a time in the development of PledgeMe that Anna and her co-founder were convinced that this was something that could really work. The idea was validated in their minds and they could really start to push it. It's a tipping point that I'm sure a lot of us face when we come up with an interesting idea. I know it was when I started up podcasting. I had all sorts of thoughts going through my head; Who is going to want to talk with me on the show? Who is going to want to listen to me? Do I have the technical skills to pull this off? Do I have enough interesting things to talk about to pull this off? The easiest things to measure were, if I could get people to come and have a conversation with me, and how many people were downloading the episodes. For some reason I set myself the target of getting 10 people to speak with me before putting out any episodes. I figured that if I could convince 10 people that I might be interesting to chat with, then I could probably go on convincing people. Looking back, I've put out over 70 episodes to date and have spoken with over 60 guests. I'd also set myself the target of trying to get 50 downloads for each episode, I have no idea why I chose that as my validation number (although I do have a big family, so maybe I thought that if I had that many at least someone that wasn't related to me was probably listening). The first few episodes hit that number quickly and all of the others have surpassed it, some by quite a significant amount. Hitting these validation targets is important as it helps with our confidence levels and keeps us engaged and the momentum going on our ideas. The challenging thing is where this validation target lies? Set it too close and it may be an idea that you keep pushing towards that you should let go. Set it too far away and if you don't hit it early then you might find yourself getting disheartened and drifting away from a great idea. I don't have any earthshattering advice about this, instead focus on a target that is a decent challenge for you to hit, but still well below where you want to end up “There is healthy stress which makes you think differently and push harder” We talk about stress often, and I don't know about you but for me the word often brings up negative connotations. The concept of stress is often frame in a way that it is bad to experience. This isn't always the case as having some stress is often a good thing when we are working towards something. Think about a deadline of something you have been working on, this deadline creates a sense of stress around time for us. Being in this state of stress will often increase my effectiveness and my creativity. It forces me to focus my energy and concentration on the topic at hand, getting the job done. Having this pressure on me often forces me to come up with slightly different ways of doing things to the way that I would normally just plod through a task, sometimes this new way increases my efficiency or output in the future. If I didn't have this stress on myself then I find my concentration wandering off and getting distracted with a whole lot of sparkly things. As a bit of a test I've set myself a time deadline to write this post by to see if I can train my focus by putting myself under some stress. It seems to be working so far. I'm perceiving this stress as a beneficial stress for me. I know it's not damaging and I can use it for my advantage to get something productive done. The problem is when I don't manage my stress levels well. This healthy stress that use to my advantage, called Eustress, can turn into distress. The stress is the same in this instance, I have a deadline coming up. However my response to it differs. I perceive the stress as negative, that it is problematic to me. When I do this I find myself getting flustered, my ability to perform drops away and I get distracted easily. My ability to manage my stress levels depends on a lot of things, what I've been eating, how well I've slept, what else is going on in my life, if I've moved my body recently. But the largest influence on how I manage is my perception of the stress as either positive or negative. If I can ship my perspective so that this stress is a positive thing for me, then I can harness it to improve my performance. It's not good to be under stress all the time, even if it is the healthy kind. It's important to have time when not stressed to relax, but also to reflect and take away learnings about how I handled the situation and what I might do differently next time. Each time I am under stress it's an opportunity to train myself to get better at dealing with it. “We should be having robust conversations about everything, diversity of perspective is so important” BOOM! Not so long ago it was thought everything that was known was all that there was. How things have changed, the earth is no longer flat, the sun does not revolve around the earth, and women are capable of making at least as informed choice about who to vote for as men are. I used to be very guilty of adhering to just one perspective. In my early to mid-twenties I was stuck in a very fixed mindset and thought that the way I was doing things was the way I was supposed to be doing things. It didn't serve me well, and I ended up being a pretty boring, unhealthy person, some may even argue a bit of a dickhead! Over the years since then, my perspective has gradually changed. It's changed through conversations, whether this being through having robust discussions with people, or listening to differing viewpoints. This is the way the world has changed over time, through having these discussions. The things I mentioned before have all been proven, but when the concept was first floated they hadn't been and it was only though robust conversation that the world was convinced. Now I try my best to jump into robust discussion about topics. I may not always change my perspective as a result of having these discussions, but at least I'm at a point now where I recognise the importance of taking the time to listen and engage. Anna is a vivacious, fun and the perfect guest to kick off Executive Stories for 2018. She has experience in events, finance, project management and startups and has completed her Masters in Entrepreneurship through the University of Otago where she wrote her thesis all about crowdfunding and her startup, PledgeMe Her official title is PledgeMe's 'chief bubble blower.' Anna is clever and energetic. She knows what’s going on in the world and business and keeps her finger on the pulse in the face of changing technology. In this interview we decided to have a little bit of fun chatting about Anna’s biggest f*ck ups. Yes, there’s some expletives that could be beeped out but I decided to run with it in its raw form – maybe skip this episode if this might not be your thing. But do tune in if you want front row seats as we discuss some of Anna’s biggest mistakes, what she learnt from them and how we can learn from our mistakes as well. We also delve into the world of crowd-sourced fund raising and its benefits. There is certainly a little tongue and cheek to Anna’s personality but when we delve a little deeper into the conversation you see she is a super smart business woman who takes a very honest and open approach to life and business - and was willing to share her f*ck ups for us all to learn from. I hope you like it!

This week I have Stephen Grant-Jones in the studio to talk about the relaunch of the www.GreenplanetFM.com website & the merging with www.Ourplanet.org into a dynamic, far-reaching local to global web presence. GreenplanetFM is upping it game, it’s jumping its codes to a whole new platform by extending its outreach to as many people as we can who we share breath with. In doing this, it is merging with Tim’s flagship website Ourplanet.org - which first went up on the world wide web as one of the pioneers of html coding and art work - 20 years ago in 1996. When first put up it collected a number of awards for both content and aesthetics as well as gleaning hundreds of hits a week every year, whilst sitting ‘in suspense’ waiting to be truly activated - well, this time to accelerate our expansion is now! Stephen Grant-Jones started building websites many years ago after being inspired by an interview he heard by David Bowie and was the person who took the GreenplanetFM audios and turned them into podcasts in 2008 with the streaming of the show via our website and iTunes. What he has learnt during his tenure running a web design agency is an understanding of the different areas of digital marketing and how all the disparate threads can be joined together and optimised, this includes how websites are built incorporating SEO (search engine optimisation), writing copy, email marketing, video, social media, analytics and paid advertising. They all interlink together, into a complete strategy. In this interview he talks about building a “strong web” and providing value first, educating, inspiring and entertaining, making sure that a website has many interlinking parts with other parts of the web, which is what we’re doing with the relaunch of the two websites into one. Stephen explains how we’ve built the website using ‘Agile’ and ‘Scrum’ methodology to build the site in ‘Sprints’ or increments. We talk about the direction that the new site is taking, going ‘mobile-friendly’, some of the functionality to expect and how you can help and be a part of the unfolding platform we’re creating. By leveraging social media feeds (Facebook and Twitter for example) to draw people’s attention to our website, we can educate, inspire and entertain them with webinars, localised video, podcasts, blogs and news, plus articles - from unique planetary movers and shakers and others on the leading edge of positive change. Also, every week GreenplanetFM will be on air - broadcasting from Auckland’s sky tower so that anyone who is intuitive to empowering and inspiring their life, can tune into 104.6FM from 8-9am every Thursday. We’ve spent over a year on this project so far, with having to organise and coordinate getting 330+ one-hour podcasts from one server to another, and making sure we pay attention to detail to make sure we don’t lose any data and our place in the search engines. Not to mention the actual design and development of the new website platform, all the specialised coding and building of ‘Web Apps’ that we’ve had to create. As GreenplanetFM is a voluntary radio program and I don’t have any ‘products’ as such, we’ve had to ‘bootstrap’ or fund it ourselves with our own time, energy and money, so it’s taken some time to pull all the threads together. We’re down to the last final push to get the site launched and have decided to do some crowdfunding to get it over the line. Stephen and I will be holding a Webinar (or online presentation) to take you on a journey through what we’re creating and why. You can sign up for it here; www.ourplanet.org/webinar. We’ve setup a page on PledgeMe http://pldg.me/ourplanet where we’re not just wanting to accept donations, we have some ‘rewards’ that people can choose from. Join us as we release the first details and the launch date of the new version of our website, ourplanet.org Stephen has just completed 6 digital marketing courses that cover Website Funnel Conversion, Email Marketing, Content Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Search Engine Marketing and Paid Traffic Mastery. He is about to complete the Testing & Optimisation and Data & Analytics courses. He can be contacted through his LinkedIn profile; https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephengrantjones
