Moments after their first performance together in over a decade, Philly's own Silvertide gathered at the broadcast booth at MMRBQ 2024, basking in the glow of what had just transpired. Nick Perri, Walt Lafty, Brian Weaver, Mark Melchiorre, and Kevin Frank shared their excitement on air with Brent Porche, and traced the moments that led them to the MMRBQ stage. After a long hiatus, when they began tossing around the idea of a reunion, the important stipulation was that it had to be fun. That philosophy, along with sharpening the songs that Philly knows and loves, resonated from the pit to the lawn at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. Seeing the band back in action made it feel like we'd turned the clock back to their early 2000s heyday, but with all the experience and soul that comes with many years spent in the industry. What made this reunion even more special was how the band member's kids were part of the experience for the first time, pointing out that their children barely know that this music was huge a huge part of our lives 20 years ago. It's a full-circle moment for Silvertide, who not only celebrated their epic past and their debut album Show & Tell, but are also brewing up new projects, including a holiday show at the TLA and potentially new music on the horizon. “And these words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk to them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and write them on the doorpost of your house.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-8) According to God's Word God wants parents to be the primary disciple maker for their children. How do parents learn to disciple their children? How should congregations and leaders support parents in this important work? Mainly consisting of a reading of Appendix 1 of the Final Committee Report, which gives a very perfunctory depiction of "intelligence failures" in the runup to January 6th. Also an interview with artist and illustrator Brian Michael Weaver, whose careful research and satirical style are both evident in his "Insurrection Maze!" artwork, a work of comic art that would be the perfect gift for anyone interested in the January 6th attack. We will also review the developments in the invesyigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith, including a selection of readings from the Committee transcript of Mike Roman, a key organizer of the fake elector plot who has been reported as accepting a cooperation deal. Roman is uniquely situated to offer evidence regarding a wide range of potential targets, and also on how the fake elector scheme morphed into a conspiracy to obstruct the certification of electoral votes. https://www.brianmichaelweaver.com/ https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/national/capitol-riots/doj-asks-to-dismiss-charges-against-magalumberjack-dillon-herrington-mobile-alabama-speedy-trial-lucas-denney-christopher-kelly-january-6/65-6ed270cc-1187-4d00-9de2-c1aa1f0d329b https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/67503040/united-states-v-herrington/ https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.256518/gov.uscourts.dcd.256518.7.0.pdf https://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-classified-documents-case-special-counsel-requests-december-trial/ https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/26/politics/trump-documents-cannon-hearing-july/index.html https://sos.ga.gov/sites/default/files/2023-06/SEB2020-059%20ROI%20redacted.pdf https://news.yahoo.com/giuliani-ordered-pay-georgia-election-205815524.html https://www.chron.com/news/article/trump-lawyer-rudy-giuliani-interviewed-in-jan-6-18174184.php https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/exclusive-special-counsel-trades-immunity-for-fake-elector-testimony-as-jan-6-probe-heats-up/ar-AA1cWPyn https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2022/11/29/hyvy-n29.html https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-capitol-agent-idUSKCN2AV2XC https://lawandcrime.com/u-s-capitol-riot/ex-fbi-supervisor-assaulted-officers-on-jan-6-shouted-kill-em-as-rioters-attacked-police-line-feds/ https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/defendants/ibrahim-mark-sami https://wtop.com/dc/2023/05/wtop-interview-dc-police-chief-robert-contee-shares-why-hes-leaving-after-33-years/ https://www.bloomberg.com/press-releases/2023-01-05/lynx-software-technologies-appoints-ryan-d-mccarthy-former-secretary-of-the-u-s-army-to-its-board-of-directors-lcj6y5vk https://t.co/vjAKJjLXuN https://news.yahoo.com/capitol-police-said-jan-6-151811832.html

Brian Weaver was the IT Director for the City of Gahanna in Gahanna, Ohio. He ran the IT systems for the city, the city's police department, and the school district. He was bullied, discriminated against and ultimately fired for uncovering mountains of corruption and incompetence within their city's government. Brian lays out that corruption, the intimidation tacts that were used against him, his termination, and how the Ohio Department of Education has connections with suspicious groups that could be involved with child trafficking, as Ohio is the fourth largest state in the nation for child trafficking. [13:14] The point of AI is to provide more flexibility and improve the cost-effectiveness of some time of technology application. AI should be flexible and adaptable to a specific environment. [14:08] Right now there is not a lot of successful application of AI because the IT side has so many problems dealing with enterprise information. [15:17] The purpose of AI is to create an automated rule to improve an outcome and make use of data on a scale that a human being just can’t do. Unless we solve all these other huge issues, it is not possible to do that at scale. [17:51] The remote working phenomenon gives the CIO a massive opportunity to go back and look at the fundamental underpinnings of the organization. [18:09] Companies should be paying attention to the framework that underpins all the information in the enterprise. [19:21] Many companies are focusing on the application layer that makes use of the data, but if they can’t get the data into their fancy analytic application there isn’t a point. [21:21] Right now if we develop an AI model and we want to deploy it we have to wrap it in code and we end up having a stand-alone application. When that changes across the landscape, you will see an easier adoption. [22:22] The CIO that does the best job will get the rest of the C-suite just as passionate about dealing with the challenges with messy data as they are the pretty pictures. [24:46] Agriculture is ahead of manufacturing in AI. Agriculture has a set of standardized data that is friendly with advanced technology. [26:43] Brian shares his advice for his younger self including trying to be self-aware. [27:11] Be honest with yourself and others about what you are good at and not good at. Understand where you get your energy, how you make decisions, and what other personality types you need around you.[28:36] At the end of the day, if you’re a good person, you mean well, and try to treat others well you will make a good decision. You make the best decision you can based on the information you have.[29:24] His last piece of advice is to enjoy the journey. [30:42] Brian shares his best worst boss story. [31:06] Lighten up a little. He shares about a fun work culture that he enjoyed being a part of. [32:26] The CIO has a very challenging set of circumstances ahead. The most successful seek to understand the foundational components first and the fancy applications second. They are happier in their job, inspire those around them, and are the best at their job. One of the most common hesitations to hiring a doula is the concern that she will replace dad's role in the birth of his child. Will he be relegated to sitting in the corner, while the doula supports his wife through birth? The answer is a resounding NO! In this episode, Sally and Melissa interview Brian Weaver about his experience in working with a doula in the birth of his second child. Brian and his wife, Rebecca, didn't have a doula for their first child, so he pinpoints specific ways the experiences differed. Listen to this episode to find out why Brian thinks doulas help dads put their focus where it's needed and be more present in the moment. Meet Brian Weaver Brian serves as the Co-Founder and CEO of Torch.AI, an augmented intelligence platform. Brian also ranks among the top amateur Ironman athletes in the world. He has achieved all-world gold athlete status five times and the US AT All-American six times. How would you define AI? You could go as far down the rabbit hole as Elon Musk goes where you've got completely automated decision making by a machine that ultimately would achieve what a human being is capable of. But the reality is you’re looking for a machine to help inform and make some decision that a human might not be able to contemplate. The bottom line is the system itself needs to learn and have continuous improvement. That’s what the “L” in machine learning means. It doesn’t mean applying to a static model. At the end of the day, what you’re really looking for and what the real companies that are really working in the space are this notion of what we call common editorial analysis, where you’ve got machines teaching machines. You’ve got the idea that you’ve got a system learning from itself. If I’ve got 12 months trying to understand AI or training for an Ironman, which would you recommend being easier? I think the approach is the same. I have some of the most brilliant minds around me at Torch.AI, but the bottom line is that you need to enlist the help of others. This goes for Ironmans too. If I was serious about it, I needed to get the best people around me that I could. Fortunately for me, I’ve had the ability to work with some of those folks. As you have success, even as an employer, it’s hard to sustain. I had a couple of coaches that had this great network around them and really helped me polish my racing up. Then, I did the same thing when I built Torch.AI. I knew that I needed to have certain people that knew how to deliver to customers in a technology environment. I knew I needed to have some really advanced brains working on the applications and I knew I needed to have the same ideas around the technology. I did the same with racing - a bike coach, triathlon coach and a nutritionist. So I would say pick your poison - and I don’t race today because I got injured, but if you had that choice, I would say pick which one intellectually stimulates you - and I found both of those intellectually stimulating for me. How did you begin the process of building your various teams? What type of culture and characteristics were you looking for out of the people you had join your teams? The first part is be aware of yourself. I know that I’m super disciplined. I grew up with a father who worked in Army intelligence so it was a very structured household because of that. Even though I have this proclivity toward chaos and doing things differently, I’m still a very disciplined person because of that. I need to have someone around me that is more that defender type. If I’m out there I need to have some defender persona to make sure I don’t kill myself at what I’m doing or hurt the company. You have to be aware of that balance. It’s almost a mathematical approach. You need to take inventory of yourself and what you are and realize what else you need to succeed. Then you need to have the guts to reach out to those types of people. How I got my bike coach, Matt Dixon, who really only trained professionals and wanted nothing to do with amateurs, I asked Hunter Allen, who develops the math behind these intense bike workouts for Tour de France type athletes, and he said Matt Dixon is the guy, if you can get him. So I reached out to Matt and he kind of blew me off. But eventually he took me and it worked out. So really some of that is cold calling and just trying to see what you can get done. I also had to do this a lot with my work because it mixes with the political sphere so I was calling senators, getting blown off and then calling staffers and just working my way up the food chain until I could get to them. How would you approach those types of calls you had with some important people? I think about how I’d want to be approached. I try to contribute something meaningful. I think that at the end of the day when you’re planning on talking to somebody you should think about their world and find something that means something to them. What I’ve enjoyed is my relationships with these people are genuine and lifelong and that’s because these calls are coming from a good place. I don’t go into them thinking about what I’m going to get out of them, I’m almost thinking about what I can contribute to them. If you go into it with a good heart and you’re not trying to get something out of somebody and really thinking about it like an ecosystem, then they’ll feel something and be more receptive to you. How do you view failure? How is it an integral part of your eventual success? I remember talking to one of my first customers at an event and he just said, “with age comes wisdom.” And what I think he meant by that was, as you get older and wiser you gain a different perspective. I’m still a young guy but I’ve had 10 lifetime's worth of experience. I've done a lot of crazy things, but at the end of it all, resilience is a key thing. The setbacks you sometimes don’t feel in the moment. I’ve been through some dark little moments thinking that I was about to lose everything and what you realize coming out of those is it’s never as bad as you thought. It’s like training. I’m going to lift weight, I’m going to do a sprint workout or I’m going to do a threshold workout on a bike. If that’s stress, it builds muscle. What I’ve found is most of the CEOs that haven’t lived through the gauntlet, they’re ill-equipped. It’s like the situation we’re in now, but I'm sort of excited to have some of the wisdom that I have because I’ve lived through some tough times and I know how to adapt. It’s all about stress and recovery, and it’s that cycle that’s critical. As a CEO, do you encourage your employees to take time away and clear their minds while getting out of the office? I’ve often thought about doing running clubs and things like that at work. I think there are some times where it can be a little oppressive with a company, but what I’ve found is that I need to be supportive of those that have a curiosity and want help. I’ve done a bunch of couch to 5k programs for people who find that fun. But I think what’s better as a CEO is not getting too into it. Again, there needs to be some balance for employees. What I have been focused on is realizing and making sure that others realize that work habits can change and be flexible. There are family things that are more important, especially now. The best thing I can do as a leader is to make sure that the culture around the organization supports a balanced approach to life. I’m not a big fan of the whole work-life balance thing. I think you should have a kick ass job as much as you love your life. As an employer I really think about how I’d want to be treated if I were an employee. I did one of my biggest sales I’ve ever done in my career while I was sitting in my bed with my kids jumping all around, and I remember distinctly, writing on a pad of paper, “enable people to work from anywhere.” I think that you’ve got to have accountability. What are your tasks and stick to them and you’ve got to be committed. You launched your own company in 2001 where you focused on using data to influence customer behavior at NASCAR events, what was that first project like? To this day, it’s pretty profound. It’s the equivalent to a Super Bowl for some types of people, so it’s really a fascinating business. As an employee of a company, I did a program for one of the speedways and the program worked incredibly well and the speedway was very excited and wanted to keep doing it but my employer didn’t see value in that audience. I actually got reprimanded for differing from their opinion. I had this idea to go in and do it for the company for all these speedways and they didn’t hire me as an employee and so I put a program together to start a company and build this marketing and information services around race fan retention and ticket sales and it just took off like wildfire.

Today Torch.AI supports clients like H&R Block with fraud detection and mitigation. And the US Department of Defense with machine learning enabled background investigations for all federal employees, supporting the determination of an individual's trustworthiness and security credentialing. So how did you end up starting your first company? So I was sort of a serial entrepreneur even an employee. I got out of college and I conned to this guy to hire me, no experience, I was the youngest employee that they'd hired a company called the Kansas City Star. I had a normal day job and I've always considered myself someone that really enjoyed working with others and trying to solve problems for others and in a business development or sales capacity as a 21 year old kid, but I always had kind of this curiosity and this bit of a creative spark. And so I then left that job and actually followed the guy that had hired me right out of college. And I was a manager over a whole group of people. But the way my first business started, I actually got in trouble at that job. I NASCAR came to Kansas City. We did a great job on NASCAR’s project. And it went very well. But my employer didn’t like it and I was written up for the project. So I went actually went to the NASCAR guys that had had the project and asked would you guys be willing to hire me? And I'll start my own company, and you can be customer number one, and they agreed. What has been one of your biggest lessons that you've learned as an entrepreneur? So in order to grow and actually in order to build a real business that’s financially viable where you can have resources and innovation as a function of the business and actually solve problems for big companies and even maybe make a difference in your community, you have to have a little bit of a different attitude because it's a living, breathing thing. And you ultimately need to figure out very quickly how to put to build teams. And you might be as a business owner or an entrepreneur, you might be like the hero CEO type, where you've got a lot of charisma, you can make a sale and you can kind of keep the thing going. But the real measure of success is can you build an organization that is sort of independent from you and that skill set or character trait? Can you share it with our listeners, one of your most successful or favorite networking experiences that you've had? I think the way most people network is like a complete waste of time. So I think I'm a good I'm a good candidate to help share some information. I think your relationships and your reputation are everything. I find that the way I do it is maybe a little different. I don't like going to a networking type of events. I've never been wanting to join a chamber of commerce or another organization. I always approach it is that I am looking for opportunity. I have a desperate need to solve a problem. So I'd say number one, I'm self-aware of what I need as a human being. And believe it or not, I think that that's directly applicable to your success. I think the more you know who you are and are comfortable in your own skin, the easier this whole thing will be because you won't be asking yourself to do something that you're just not naturally inclined to do. If you could go back to your 20 year old self, what would you tell yourself to do more of, less of, or differently with regards to your professional career? I think it would be don't stress so much. It's easy to say and I just think I'm wired to sort of be hyper motivated and sort of driven by fear. The wisdom that I found doing this for over two decades and having failures and great successes and the whole bit is that actually the journey is super fun if you can just be open and relaxed. The bad times aren't as bad as you think they are. And you don't realize it and you can't even understand it until you're way past it. And you can kind of reflect on it. I found that meditation is really helpful with that. Have you done any of that? I totally have. And the problem for me is my brain is always on and it is a curse. I am a frustrated creative type. My brain is on overdrive all the time and that's my challenge with meditation. And I think what I figured out is how I can slow down and be contemplated is to garden. Any final word or advice for our listeners with regards to growing and supporting your network? Just be brave and try and do something big with your life and with your company. We have purpose. Our company has purpose and I can live my life with that purpose. And I think the more you find that whether it's a mission for your customer, whether it's a mission for your family, whether it's whether it's just being deliberate about how you live your life. Whether that's eating, sleeping, exercising, you know, whatever it happens to be how that manifests feel for you. Absolutely try and find it. Brian Weaver is chief executive officer of Torch.AI, a Leawood, Kansas company that helps organizations leverage artificial intelligence through a proprietary enterprise data management software solution. With nearly 20 years of business experience, leading mission-driven, high-growth technology enabled organizations, his companies have earned recognition as Kansas City Small Business of the Year and by Forbes magazine. Weaver recalls starting his career, frustrated with a lower salary than his peers, and increasing his pay as a top performer in his sales division. After being passed over for a big promotion, he took a job with another company, managing a staff twice his age. He turned failure into success again when, after being reprimanded by his employer for accepting a prolific marketing project with the Kansas Speedway, he launched his own company and made the Kansas Speedway his first client, thus beginning his career as an entrepreneur. Today, as the founder and leader of a company that provides artificial intelligence to the U.S. Department of Defense, he relies on the problem-solving skills he has honed throughout his career. An avid endurance sports athlete, Brian has ranked among the top amateur Ironman athletes in the world, has achieved "All World Gold" athlete status since 2013, USAT All-American every year since 2011, Ironman XC's 2011 and 2012 Athlete of the Year for the 70.3 distance and in 2011 for the 140.6 distance taking class wins at both the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii and has qualified for and raced the Boston Marathon. NPH S4E21: Nikki and Brian Weaver of Portland Playhouse and Bianca McCarthy of ECHO Theatre by Media Institute for Social Change
War Cartoonist Joe Sacco on How Portland's Housing Crisis Is Like a Refugee CrisisYou might find and unusual comic stuffed in your mailbox or slipped under the door in the coming weeks. Titled "Rent Crisis," it's by the award-winning Portland journalist and artist Joe Sacco. He’s spent his life creating wry black-and-white comics about people who live in war zones like Palestine, Bosnia, and Chechnya, but his latest project focuses on a conflict closer to home. Sacco’s friends with Chloe Eudaly, who owns the independent bookstore Reading Frenzy and is running for a seat on Portland’s city council, and this six-page comic came from a day they spent traveling around Portland interviewing people who are struggling to pay the rent.Physical Education Works Up a Sweat - 6:46Some issues have to be worked out on the dance floor. Which is one reason four Portland performers — keyon gaskin, Allie Hankins, Lu Yim, and Takahiro Yamamoto — came together to form Physical Education. What began as four friends getting together for a meal evolved into a published reading list, open meetups, workshops, performances, and now a year-long residency at the Pacific Northwest College of Art's Center for Contemporary Art and Culture. Comic Bri Pruett - 14:21Portland comic Bri Pruett is a tireless performer. She has made a name for herself for taking on everything from her Clackamas childhood to her own body with fearlessness and wit. August Wilson's Widow on Portland Playhouse's Staging of His Autobiography - 22:41The late August Wilson was hugely influential in shaping the narratives of black life in theaters. His “American Century Cycle” is a series of ten plays about African-American life over the course of the 20th century — one per decade. Portland Playhouse, under the direction of Brian Weaver, is methodically working its way through the Cycle, creating a whole new audience for Wilson in Portland. And this fall, Portland Playhouse is offering another sample of Wilson’s work that few audiences nationwide have seen: his one-man, autobiographical show “How I Learned What I Learned,” through Nov. 6. Think Out Loud spoke with Wilson's widow, Constanza Romero, a Seattle-based, Tony-nominated costume designer, about the life and work of her late husband. Aunt Jemima, Buckwheat, and Don’t Shoot — Painter Arvie Smith on Why None of This Is New - 30:26When you see Pacific Northwest College of Art Professor Emeritus Arvie Smith’s vivid, explosive paintings at the Portland Art Museum later this month, you might think they were created last week. But to know Smith’s decades-spanning work is to realize that there’s nothing new about what happened in Minneapolis and Baton Rouge this month. He tells us about his art and life, which is book-ended on one end by the Jim Crow South and on the other by smart phone videos capturing the shooting of black Americans by police.Filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky Chases Slenderman to the Internet's Darkest Corners - 37:02In 2014, two Wisconsin girls attacked one of their friends with a knife. They said they did it to please Slenderman, an internet boogeyman often depicted as a tall, faceless villain in a dark suit. Slenderman is a work of fiction — he was invented as part of a web contest to create a new horror figure — but that hasn’t stopped him from capturing the minds of children across the country. The award-winning Portland filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky spent 18 months following the trial of the two girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier. The result is the documentary “Beware the Slenderman.” opbmusic Session: Okkervil River - 42:03For almost two decades, Okkervil River has been the main artistic outlet for songwriter Will Sheff. The band had some critical success, but Sheff became unhappy with the creative direction of the past few years. Instead of dissolving the band and starting over from scratch, though, he made an unconventional decision. He kept the band name, but made a hard reset.
What has four fingers, a yellow face, and is totally evil?Montgomery Burns, of course. But after twenty-six excellent years as America's most laughably despicable super villain, Mr. Burns' character is facing a big shakeup. Harry Shearer, the voice of Mr. Burns (as well as Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and others) announced this week that he's leaving "The Simpsons."It's a sad day for Simpsons' fans – but the ripples go far beyond TV. Shearer's portrayal of Mr. Burns was so iconic that it even played a role in the development of a play. It's called “Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play,” and you can find it onstage at Portland Playhouse this spring. Though the play draws its title from "The Simpsons," the show's comedic namesake is outweighed by the attention it gives to darker subject matter. The show starts with a group of friends around a campfire. They're hanging out, drinking beers, and trying to remember the details of a Simpsons episode called Cape Feare. It's utterly pedestrian – until an unexpected noise in the background prompts the cast to draw guns and knives.“The conceit of the play,” says director Brian Weaver, “is that it's a post-electric world.”Post-electric and post-apocalyptic. Somehow, and the playwright leaves it to her audience to fill in the blanks, 99% of the human population has died off. With no one left to man the nuclear power plants, they've all melted down, making electricity a thing of the past. So humanity – or what's left of it anyway – is back to good old-fashioned flint and tinder (and not the ‘swipe right' kind). They make fires, and they do what humans have pretty much always done around the fire: they tell stories.“It's a play about how we use stories,” says playwright Anne Washburn, “how we use stories to divert us, how we use stories to comfort us, how we use stories to explain things to us, how we use stories to talk about things which it's too frightening to speak about directly.”Read our full story: www.opb.org/radio/programs/state-of-wonder/article/portland-playhouse-takes-on-the-simpsons-and-the-apocalypse/
