Hello and welcome to the ZimmCast. I'm Chuck Zimmerman. The first day of spring started the day after the annual Agri-Pulse Ag & Food Summit and National Ag Day Activities. We have published virtual newsrooms on our AgNewsWire website and story posts on AgWired. So, in this episode I'd like to share a few of the interviews and audio from the events. I'll start out with Agri-Pulse. You can listen to the opening remarks from Ireland's Ambassador to the United States Geraldine Byrne Nason. Next will be Jim Sutter, CEO, USSEC and then Jane Franch, Sr. Director, Climate Impact, Pivot Bio. I'll move to the National Ag Day Activities with a student panel discussion. The students are Taylor Rogers, National Grange Youth Ambassador; Lance Williams, AFA advisor; Caroline Groth, FFA Eastern Region Vice President; and Matias Habib, National 4H. Moderated by Miles Chiotti, Manager, Public & Industry Relations - Agriculture & Turf Division at John Deere. It is Cindy's time to be in Washington, DC this week for the ACE Fly-in. After that the next event coming up soon is the 2025 Agri-Marketing Conference. If you haven't registered, you can still do so. I'll see you there. If you have any ideas for a future ZimmCast podcast just let me know. That's the ZimmCast for now. I hope you enjoy it and thank for listening.

With the calendar turning to September, we are entering the final stretch of the 2024 MLB regular season. And with that, the postseason picture is starting to shape up, but there are still some questions left to be asked about which teams will be playing October baseball for a chance to be crowned world champions.Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman take a look at the current postseason picture and wonder if there will be any exciting races down the stretch within divisions and wild card standings. With teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves seemingly locked in to a postseason spot, will there be a way for the New York Mets to sneak in? Can the Arizona Diamondbacks or San Diego Padres catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the next few weeks to win the NL West crown? Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about the waiver system, how it works and why guys like Taylor Rogers and Tommy Pham could make an impact for a possible playoff team. Jake & Jordan then get into a conversation about an exchange on X with a fan asking Mark Cuban to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as talking about Rhett Lowder making his debut for the Cincinnati Reds. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Opening Day is finally here! The San Francisco Giants take on the Padres today in a game that really counts, and Logan Webb will be on the mound. That's no surprise, but it doesn't mean the SF Giants' official Opening Day roster didn't have a few surprises. Most surprisingly, perhaps, is the fact that Joey Bart made the team. Bart is out of options and can't be sent to the minors, so the Giants elected to carry him, along with their two main catchers Patrick Bailey and Tom Murphy, rather than designating Bart for assignment. Pretty soon the Giants will have to make a move because they can't carry three catchers (and 14 position players) for long.Other noteworthy decisions included the fact that Nick Ahmed made the Giants and was added to the roster. He's in the Opening Day lineup and playing shortstop. Marco Luciano was optioned to Sacramento. Luis Matos was more of a snub, as he was also optioned by the SF Giants with Austin Slater apparently healthy enough to start the season. This move will be unpopular with some fans, but rest assured that Matos and Luciano should get tons of opportunities this year and the Giants are by no means giving up on either one. It's all about protecting inventory in this case, and Slater and Yastrzemski are underrated big leaguers. On the pitching side, a few players will be making their major league debuts if they get into a game. Left-handed reliever Erik Miller joins the Giants' staff as the second lefty in the 'pen after Taylor Rogers. Landen Roupp also made the Giants thanks to a killer breaking ball that could make him a real weapon. Blake Snell is on the roster even though he won't start in the Giants' series against the Padres. And Michael Conforto is starting in left, becoming the SF Giants' 18th consecutive different Opening Day left fielder, with a 19th likely next year.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
“To me, a private equity firm should never look at a healthcare vertical and say, God, there's opportunity there. That means that there's profit exploitation to be had in those areas.” - Taylor Rogers Taylor Rogers, former professional baseball pitcher turned insurance consultant, joined me this week for a podcast focused on profit exploitation in the current healthcare system, and what we need to do as an industry to bring back competition and lower prices. There are a huge number of people in this space who used to be college or professional athletes, so I was excited to hear what led to Taylor's baseball career and what also led him to insurance. Competition is an inherent component of capitalism, one that leads companies to try to lower prices as much as they can to appeal to consumers, but it's incredibly absent from this field. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Jorge Soler would make the San Francisco Giants' lineup better. But at what point does the asking price become too much? For Soler, it's probably not about average annual value. He should get ≥ $12 million a year and ≤ $18 million. So there's not a huge range there, and if the Giants are truly interested, they can likely agree on that front. However, as MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports, teams, including the SF Giants, are balking at Soler's desire for a third guaranteed year. Given Jorge Soler turns 32 on Feb. 25, it's not too surprising that the Giants and other teams are hesitant to hand out that guaranteed third year, and with Spring Training report week finally here, there's pressure on Soler and other free agents to make a decision soon. It's worth pointing out that ESPN, MLB Trade Rumors, and FanGraphs all predicted that Soler would land a three-year deal worth somewhere between $37.5 million and $45 million. However, the FanGraphs readers, with their crowdsourced submissions, had an average contract prediction of around 2.5 years, which sort of exemplifies where we stand now. The SF Giants love their club options, so something like 2/$33 million with a third-year team option could perhaps get a deal done. In other news, the Giants signed hard-throwing lefty Amir Garrett to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Garrett will ear $1.35 million if he makes the major league team. Left handed relief is something of a soft spot on the SF Giants' 40-man roster, and the erratic Garrett will enter camp firmly in the midst of the competition to join Taylor Rogers as another lefty in the major league 'pen. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Where would the 2023 San Francisco Giants be without Wilmer Flores? For the last six weeks, Flores has essentially been the SF Giants' offense. The Giants' decision to extend Wilmer Flores for three years, $16.5M is looking like a stroke of genius. Flores is having a career year in his fourth season with the Giants, so much so that he's essentially already been worth the entirety of the contract. The third year of the deal is actually a $3.5M player option, but if Flores declines it, it becomes an $8.5M team option. But the other moves the SF Giants made between the end of the 2022 season and the start of the 2023 season haven't worked out so well. Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger simply haven't made the impact that was hoped or expected. Conforto has struggled to hit for any kind of impact power, and Haniger was ineffective before breaking his forearm and missing a bunch of time. Other signings like Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea also haven't been great so far. Luke Jackson and Taylor Rogers have mostly been good.AJ Pollock left last night's game with side discomfort. Marco Luciano was then promtly removed from the River Cats game. It is likely that Luciano joins the active roster, but it's not clear if he will get more regular playing time this time around. Another player to keep an eye on going forward is Wade Meckler, who's now hitting at the minors' highest level. Meckler looks like someone who will really contribute with the bat, which is what the Giants need desperately right now.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
It wasn't always pretty, but the San Francisco Giants swept the Pittsburgh Pirates and continued to rise in the standings. The Giants' offense was at times overmatched by inferior pitching—again—but they found a way to win all three games against the Pirates while many of their opponents in the division and wild card races had rough series. Michael Conforto, Patrick Bailey, Alex Cobb, Alex Wood, Tristan Beck, Taylor Rogers, and many others contributed to the Giants' sweep. The SF Giants leapfrogged the D-backs and Marlins, and are now just 1.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. They're also now the No. 1 wild card team, but the race remains tight. The Giants' odds of making the playoffs are close to 75%, according to FanGraphs. The Giants' odds of winning the NL West are over 20%.Are the Giants chasing more, or making contact less? It seems that way, but their chase rate remains solid. They've been making less contact, but their strikeout rate oddly doesn't reflect that. On the season, the Giants' strikeout rate is one of the highest in MLB, but it's actually been significantly lower over the last two weeks, even though it doesn't feel that way. The San Francisco Giants' bats have a big chance to wake up as the team heads to Cincinnati, where the Great American Ballpark is the most homer-prone in the majors. It's a huge series for both the Giants and the Reds, and Logan Webb takes the ball for the Giants tonight.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants entered the season with so many starting pitchers that it wasn't clear how they'd fit them all. At the season's halfway point, however, the Giants really only have two starting pitchers they could truly rely upon. Logan Webb and Alex Cobb put together All-Star-worthy first halves (even though Webb was snubbed from the All-Star game ... again). But newcomers Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling struggled mightily out of the gates, and Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood were inconsistent. The SF Giants' "bullpen" was extremely non-traditional. Camilo Doval was ultra reliable at the back end, and Tyler and Taylor Rogers also provided strong performances in a traditional role, but pretty much everyone else was either inconsistent, injured, or unorthodox. Manaea improved mightily when used out of the 'pen, and is making a strong case to move back into the starting rotation. Tristan Beck was strong in a bulk innings role. Scott Alexander, John Brebbia, and Luke Jackson were good when healthy.Projecting forward, it's anyone's guess as to how things will play out for the Giants. We know Webb and Cobb will anchor the rotation as long as they're healthy, but it's unclear who exactly will claim the remaining spots or whether the SF Giants will continue to rely heavily on bullpen games, which was largely a successful strategy in the first half. It's also worth keeping an eye on young players like Keaton Winn, Kyle Harrison, Carson Whisenhunt, and Mason Black to see if they get an opportunity and make an impact for the Giants in the second half—and hopefully in the playoffs.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The midway point of the 2023 MLB season is just three games away; after this large of a sample size, how should we evaluate the San Francisco Giants' offseason? The Giants' offseason was largely defined by the players they didn't sign, from Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa to Carlos Rodón. The Giants did bring back Joc Pederson and bring in Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, Taylor Rogers, and Luke Jackson. Those players have been a mixed bag. None have truly been great, with the exception of perhaps Rogers, and several have been big disappointments. But speaking of big disappointments, check out Carlos Correa's abysmal numbers or consider the fact that Rodón has yet to throw a pitch for the Yankees due to injuries. The trade deadline is approaching; what are the Giants' needs? It's pretty clear the Giants could use some starting pitching. What would it take to land Marcus Stroman? What about Dylan Cease? Is Shohei Ohtani available, and does he makes sense for the SF Giants? Will the Giants trade Joey Bart? So many questions to consider and we'll have our answers soon enough. Is it sustainable for the Giants to be doing so many bullpen games? First response would be that they aren't really "bullpen games" in the typical sense. Think of these games as being started by an opener, and then the "long reliever" or "bulk guy" who follows is essentially the starting pitcher, but he takes down the middle innings instead of the first many innings. The team is certainly cognizant of how this might affect their staff. Alex Cobb's imminent return to the Giants' rotation helps, and it seems clear that the Giants' biggest need at the trade deadline would be starting pitching.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Although the San Francisco Giants were unable to complete a sweep of the first-place D-backs, there's no taking away from this great stretch of baseball the Giants have played. No team in baseball has a better record than the SF Giants since the start of May. The Giants are in the midst of one of their most daunting portions of the schedule, and they've been absolutely dominant. The Giants swept the Dodgers in LA, they took three of four from the star-studded Padres, and they took two of three against the D-backs, owners of the NL's second best record. This stretch has vaulted the San Francsico Giants into excellent playoff position first first place in the West within their sights. However, for the Giants, the injuries continue to pile up. So much so that they threaten to derail the SF Giants' strong play. Luke Jackson landed on the IL over the weekend with a low back strain, joining key bullpen pieces John Brebbia and Scott Alexander. Suddenly, the back end of the 'pen is just Camilo Doval, Tyler Rogers, and Taylor Rogers. In the rotation, the Giants are without Alex Cobb, but thankfully he should return on this road trip when the Giants play the Mets. Wilmer Flores is on the IL but should return in the Giants' upcoming series. Mike Yastrzemski went on the IL with a hamstring issue, and his presence will be sorely missed. Now the Giants head to Toronto, where they'll see old friends Kevin Gausman and Brandon Belt. Gausman is almost certain to pitch in this series, which will be very interesting to see. He's still a great pitcher, and he probably has some extra motivation facing his old team, to which he wanted to return but apparently he did not receive an offer. Belt had a miserable start to his season but has turned it on in a big way as of late.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Platoon deniers look away. The San Francisco Giants beat the Rockies in dramatic comeback fashion thanks in large part to their platoon system and ability to get favorable matchups in key situations. In the seventh inning, after Michael Conforto walked and Mitch Haniger singled, the Rockies had a choice to make. Let a righty face Mike Yastrzemski and Blake Sabol, or go to a lefty and force the SF Giants to make countermoves. They went to a lefty, and Austin Slater and Wilmer Flores came through with huge hits as pinch hitters, fueling the Giants' 5-4 comeback win.Another key factor in the win was the San Francisco Giants' bullpen. Over the last 30 days, no bullpen has a better ERA than the Giants' bullpen. Pretty much everyone in the 'pen, including players who were heavily criticized for their early season struggles (such as Sean Manaea and Taylor Rogers) has been outstanding over the last month. The Giants' bullpen was key in the win last night, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings after Logan Webb allowed four runs in 5.1 innings.Carson Whisenhunt, who was drafted less than 11 months ago, made his Double-A debut last night and continued to dominate. He's made a meteoric rise through the SF Giants' system and his first start in Richmond was more of the same. Luis Matos, another extremely intriguing prospect who's the youngest player in Triple-A, homered last night to continue to make his case that he belongs in the majors—soon.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
