Take a virtual coffee break today with the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment as we chat with Jeff Karst, PhD, pediatric psychologist in the MACC Fund Center at Children's Wisconsin and associate professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin about the new cautionary effects of social media on young people.
To the uninitiated, interoperability may sound like a surgical term, but it actually refers to how IT systems and other technologies communicate with each other. The goal, of course, is seamless communication to improve efficiency and quality of care, but that's obviously a big challenge. Today on Raise the Line, we dive into this important issue with two people who come at it from different professional perspectives, but who share that goal. Oh, and they also happen to be brothers! Jake Engle is a Senior Director at Oracle Cerner, a supplier of health information technology used at thousands of facilities worldwide. His brother, Dr. Sam Engle, is a pediatric endocrinologist at Children's Wisconsin. On the patient care side, Dr. Engle talks about the value of having a complete patient history in hand prior to appointments to maximize the efficiency of the time spent, but also to avoid doing duplicate tests. “Especially with kids, you never want to have to repeat labs if you don't need to. I feel very strongly about that.” From the tech side, Jake Engle addresses the challenge of trying to synthesize data from multiple sources such as EHRs, insurance records, public health databases or commercial products focused on one niche of healthcare. “I think the healthcare systems are a bit late to the game and it's much a more complicated game.” You'll also learn about efforts to make it easier for patients to access their health data, the need for data standards in the industry and how their personal relationship contributes to this work.

This week on the Faculty Factory podcast, we welcome back Jennifer Apps, PhD, as she shares her insights on the topic of "mental load" and offers practical strategies for effectively navigating it. Dr. Apps explains that mental load refers to the cognitive effort involved in managing and organizing tasks, both in personal and professional life. The discussion is prompted by Dr. Apps' realization of her own mental load. Recognizing the gender-based aspect of mental load, she delves deeper into understanding its impact on households and workplaces. The episode explores the concept of mental load, its effects, and ways to address it in different contexts. Dr. Apps is a pediatric neuropsychologist at Children's Wisconsin, a pediatric acute care children's hospital in Milwaukee. She also serves as a professor and vice chair of faculty development in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Department. In addition, she is the associate provost of Faculty Affairs at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). She previously joined us for an episode titled 'How Faculty Can Succeed While Avoiding Overcommitment,' and you can listen to it here: https://facultyfactory.org/jennifer-apps/ When it comes to mental load, Dr. Apps describes the cognitive effort that goes into this as constant, never ending, and exhausting. “I'm a big believer in gratitude and I believe that gratitude is a cognitive methodology that unlocks new ways of being able to look at situations,” she told us.
At some point in our academic medicine careers, we will all overcommit ourselves to an overwhelming number of responsibilities. Jennifer Apps, PhD, joins the Faculty Factory Podcast this week to chat about reconnecting to our values to reclaim some balance. Dr. Apps is a pediatric neuropsychologist at Children's Wisconsin, a pediatric acute care children's hospital in Milwaukee. She also serves as associate professor and the vice chair of faculty development in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Department. No one wants to miss a potentially great opportunity and many of us have a hard time saying no, but without clearly defining our values it is difficult to prioritize what matters most. “The worst feeling comes when you get into these positions and you feel like you're not doing any of them because you're just managing them all instead of really being able to excel,” she said. As we enter a new year and Season 5 of the Faculty Factory Podcast, this interview will hopefully serve as an inspiration to many. “We've all gone into these fields where we've demonstrated the ability to persevere towards a long-term goal, but in order to do that, you have to have these values that have been guiding you,” Dr. Apps said. Believe it or not, your baby is starting to bond with you right from birth, and those early months are full of real-time evidence that your baby is developing a strong attachment and actually learning to love you. In this episode, Children's Wisconsin pediatrician Dr. Schreiber shares ways your baby shows attachment and love, from first smiles to separation anxiety. You'll also hear from Children's Wisconsin child and family therapist Becky Verdin about what to do if your baby ISN'T showing some of those signs, and other ways you can help bond with your baby through the first year and beyond.
Feeding your baby may seem simple, but from what formula to choose to how and when to start solids, there are a lot of decisions to make! In the second episode of our "feeding your baby" series, we talk with Children's Wisconsin pediatrician Dr. Daniel Dorrington to demystify bottle-feeding and starting solids. This episode will help you feed your baby with more confidence, whether you're thinking about introducing a bottle or want to know the best way and time to start solids.

To put our struggles in perspective: this week in 1970, Apollo 13 safely returned to Earth after a close brush with disaster and the potential death of all three astronauts. Following the NASA Director's comment: “This could be the worst disaster NASA's ever experienced,” Gene Kranz replied, “With all due respect, sir, I believe this is gonna be our finest hour.” This is our fifth program on COVID-19, and we will explain why this will also be our finest hour in the battle against this disease. You will hear an important update from our infectious disease experts - everything you need to know, without the drama and political commentary. We will also hear from the CEO's of MCW, Froedtert Health and Children's Wisconsin on how academic medical centers are dealing with this pandemic – information you will not find elsewhere. We have also arranged a special visit from Mr. Baseball, Hall of Famer Bob Uecker, connecting with us from Arizona. Bob can put any challenge in perspective! The Word on Medicine was the first to bring you accurate scientific information on testing, treatment and the impact of COVID-19 on Wisconsin, and you will hear the latest updates this week.
