Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 3, 2024 is: diligent • DIL-uh-junt • adjective Someone or something described as diligent is characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic effort. // After many hours of diligent research, the students were ready to compile their results. See the entry > Examples: “Scott had a reputation for being diligent and hardworking, maybe a tad arrogant, but not the type to make rousing speeches in the locker room at halftime.” — Robert Samuels, The New Yorker, 1 Nov. 2023 Did you know? You're more likely to be diligent about something if you love doing it. The etymology of diligent reflects the fact that devotion can lead to energetic effort. The word, which entered English in the 14th century by way of Anglo-French, comes from the Latin verb diligere, meaning “to value or esteem highly” or “to love.” Diligere was formed by combining the di- prefix (from dis-, meaning “apart”) with the verb legere, meaning “to gather, select” or “to read.” Legere has itself proved to be a diligent contributor to English; its offspring include collect, lecture, legend, intelligent, and legume.

Author Barbara Legere lost her 29 year old son Kevin to suicide in 2020. Kevin had been fighting a drug addition and his mental health for 13 years and Barbara did everything she knew how to do to help him recover and just love him. His life and the lessons Barbara learned from it inspired her to write a book called, Kevin's Choice, A Mother's Journey Through her Son's Mental Illness, Addiction and Suicide. Her hope is that the book will help other parents and teens who are suffering, shine a light on the warning signs (for those who think everything is fine), and prevent further loss. In 2021, there were over 100,000 lives that were taken from us who were just like Kevin. Her book and this interview are filled with tips and guidance for parents that might be dealing with similar issues. You can also learn more at www.barbaralegere.com/ and read about her latest book Talk to Me I'm Grieving: Supportive Ways to Help Someone Through Grief.  Barbara would have done anything to save her son and his choice will never be easy to accept. But she often feels his presence, love and encouragement and that fuels Barbara to keep sharing, writing and speaking about ways she can help. She also lost another dear soul in her life named Anthony to a drug overdose and he also is part of her drive to be a source of strength and wisdom for anyone who will listen. Tune in for her candid interview with Matt. You listen to the audio version or view the interview on youtube.

Barbara Legeere faced one of the greatest tragedies any parent can go through the loss of a child. After a long of battle with drug addiction, he ended his life. After falling into the wrong crowd in high school who introduced him to drugs and then he was introduced to harder drugs like heroin. Barbara tried to help him as much as possible through many rehab programs but nothing helped. After he died she had to deal with her grief and the feeling that she could have done more but she did her best. She wrote a book to help other parents going through the same journey. Her story is unfortunately not unique but reminds us even though it never ends we can find purpose through grief and help others.

Barbara Legere's story of addiction and mental health is a cautionary tale for all parents. As she journeyed alongside her son, Keven through his struggles with substance abuse and depression-which ultimately led to suicide - Barbara learned so much about love in its purest form: caring enough to ask questions; listening without judgment or giving advice when it wasn't wanted  The risk we take by loving someone who needs more care than they can get from themselves brings us full circle back once again...to where we started. Except this time, with a new understanding: that love - in all its forms - is always worth the risk. Her story is one of love, hope, and ultimately tragedy. As a mother, she did everything she could to help her son, but in the end, she was forced to accept that there was nothing more she could do. In the process, she shines a light on the hidden anguish of countless parents who are taking care of children that society tells them to abandon.  For those parents who have borne witness to overdose, arrests, addiction, treatment, incarceration, and even death, "Keven's Choice" is a raw and intimate memoir of a mother's grief that shows it's possible and necessary to go on, even amidst the unimaginable. Available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Apple Books, or through your favorite bookstore. Ep 067: The abuse of prescription opioids is a serious national crisis. While the opioid epidemic has been declared a national public health emergency, in Maine the situation is particularly alarming: Our state's rate of opioid-related overdose deaths is among the highest in the country. As you may know from listening to our show, we attempt to find experts that look to provide solutions to real problems that our clients face or may face in retirement. So what do we do when our child, grandchild, spouse, or loved one becomes addicted to substances? How do we live with ourselves when a loved one commits suicide?  When our next guest's son Keven begged her for permission to die, she refused. Keven had spent half his life struggling with addiction while his single mom battled courts, health care companies, rehab facilities, and mental health professionals in an effort to protect him. As their relationship strained and his drug use progressed, she was forced to accept and love Keven as he was in their limited time together—two years before his suicide. In her book, "Keven's Choice: A Mother's Journey Through Her Son's Mental Illness, Addiction and Suicide," she tells the story of trying to navigate the dark worlds of her son's substance use and depression while also addressing her complicated guilt and regret over how she handled it. In the process, she shines a light on the hidden anguish of countless parents taking care of children that society tells them to abandon. Please welcome Barbara Legere to the Retirement Success in Maine Podcast! Chapters: Welcome, Barbara Legere! [3:24] When did Barbara start to see signs of mental illness in Keven? [10:12] Does tough love work in a situation like Keven's? [19:39] How do you manage money in a situation like Keven's? Does the money help or cause more harm?
